Masha.Allah, insightful knowledge into Sufism, and the diffrence between shariah and Sufism. We are very weak, don't think we could withstand the strict spiritual training compared to the spiritual training of today. Allah ta'aala grant us the means, taufeeq, strength and steadfastness to purify our bodies and hearts before we meet him.

An interesting read. Not something I would've otherwise read.

One question, well actually a few!

This thing the Sufi shaykhs do by looking at the person and telling them that they are in a state of impurity or that they have sinned, etc. Is that through a different sort of vision or by the help of Jinn?

Also, there was the mention of the Dervish, I could never understand their act of dancing and will never be able to see them justify their acts either. What is their evidence for such a dance? As I understand, they stand in a way and spin in circles with one hand representing the world and the other representing the sun and themselves in the middle resembling the day and night going through time very quickly. I don't get it. Have I missed something?

Imam Abu Haneefa (rahmatullah 'alayh) was granted by Allah such visions. He could see the peoples sins in the droplets of water that would fall from people performing wudhu. This caused him great discomfort after which he asked Allah to take away this ability.
Based on that and other stories of our pious predecessors, I would say majority are from Allah as a means to help people spiritually. Its a gift from Allah to his pious servants and nothing to do with jinns.

Sufism/Tasawwuf, is the spirit and the state of perfection in Deen, to rid a person of inner diseases of the heart i.e lust, anger, jealousy, love of fame, stinginess, greed, vanity, deceit, calamities of the tongue etc
A sufi is a person who follows the path of tasawwuf, without purification or at least an effort in purification a Muslim cannot be described as a perfect Believer.

Mufti Muhammad Taqi Uthmani has described in his spiritual discourses that tasawwuf, tareeqah, sulook and ihsan are all different names conveying the same sense. The basic aim of tasawwuf is not simply thikr (rememberance or mention of Allah). thikr is not the real objective of tasawwuf it is a means to the objective. The real objective of tasawwuf is purification of the soul (tazkiyah)

Thus removal of bad qualities and making space in the heart for good qualities such as humbleness, humility, patience, sincerity, gratitude and excellent manners. Sufis/mashaikh treat their followers and students in such a way that their hearts are filled with excellent manners to a point where the bad qualities near extinction.

Dervishes and Dancing has no relation to the Tasawwuf or Sufism as we understand it.

im sure brother Muadh Khan can shed more light on this subject.

Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Everything related to Turkey must be viewed in the context that during the last 80-90 years they have tried their utmost to WIPE ISLAM off the face of Turkey! In the context of almost a century of heresy and deviance you are not going to get pristine Sunnah the next day; its impossible.

Secondly, Turkey (like Syria & Egypt) is the home of Ottoman empire so unlike the subcontinent they are used to dealing with differences of opinions (despite being Hanafees) which Muslims of Indian subcontinent have a very serious problem with as their world revolves around the Hanafi Madhab only.

Hadhra is perfectly permissible in Shaf’ae Madhab (just like goatee beard etc) unlike the Hanafi Madhab and Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller (HA) is a Shaf’ae.

If some Turkish Sufees have somehow kept Islam alive under the most heinous pressure, torture and coercion then they should be commended. My friend in Libya is a Hafidh (& Faqih) and comes from a lineage of Maliki Scholars going back 6 centuries, his Sisters are also Hafidhas and Alimahs who used to go to a university in Tripoli in a Jeans & T-Shirt and then cry in the night in the basement in candlelight (couldn’t turn the light on due to the fear of Qadhafi) , not only they were Hafidhas were Masters of recitation in both Qayloon & Hafs and only started wearing Hijab/Niqab when they escaped to USA.

My friend Shaykh Kamil Naqshbandi from Turkey comes from a long lineage of Hanafi Ulamah & Mashaykh from the Ottoman Empire to this day he wears an Amamah in Turkey and his family never surrendered their Amamah despite torture and his grandfather was shot by the firing squad for REFUSING to wear the Turkish hat!

Government made him wash dishes and cook eggs for years in a kitchen to break his spirits and he showed up in his Amamah and Sunnah dress every single day and washed dishes for years but didn’t comprise , time to time got picked up and beaten up but never let go of his Amamah. In the evenings he taught Qaida to little kids in his basement.

I havn't been in touch in many years but I may ask them or their Sisters to open an Account here so people can ask how they stuck to Sunnah during the torture of regimes...

There is a reason why you see even the Bid'ah Sufees from Turkey/Syria wearing an Amamah and that's because many Muslims were blessed with Shahadah in trying to preserve the headgear.
