This seems to be a cultural Indo-Pak thing. Most ulama here will say "ghar walay," meaning "people of the house," when they mention their wives.
I guess it also depends on one's temperament. Someone people are just not very comfortable saying "my wife" when they can get the message across with using a term that is more, shall we say, concealing.
I don't know what the norm is among the respected ulama of Arabia. Perhaps someone can pitch in.
I think the excerpt has not been taken from Imdad ul Fatawa. They have given the reference at the end. The passage in Imdad ul Fatwa is quite different. Also I guess by South Africans you are referring to alhaadi website, but they have not given it the same title as this brother.
The Arabs I believe have Something similar instead of saying زوجتي My wife they say أسرتي My Family. They consider is عيب to mention this former . It's not an only IndoPak thing.
Brother could you point out a few examples of these serious translation errors so that I can notify Madrasah Taleemuddeen. The reference given by them is Malfoozaat Husnul Azeez, but you are referring to Imdaadul Fataawa. Are they the same book?
The obvious meaning of that Malfooz is that publicizing the fact that a living woman wrote an article has the potential to excite a man. The translation (or mistranslation) clearly alludes to this. Names in themselves have no such potential unless the feminie gender behind a particular name is known. In any case, I will seek further clarification from them regarding this Malfooz once I find out what the errors in translation are.
Sorry but I do not have time to get dragged into South African politics and unprofessionalism, if something comes up from time to time I will highlight.
Maulana Abdul-Majid Daryabadi (RA) writes that the concept of an "Islamic state (i.e. Pakistan) which was presented by Dr Muhammad Iqbal (RA) to members of Muslim league in 1930 was spoken, presented and elaborated in detail in many Majalis by Hazrat (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) regularly.
Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on Kashf about "Pakistan"
See page 55 onwards. May 1938 (before resolution of Pakistan was presented):
Mian Shabbir Ali, the wind is blowing in the direction of these (people of Muslim league) and these people whom (people) call Faasiq (sinners) will get the Kingdom and "Maulvees" will not get it. The circumstances prevailing these days mean that "Maulvees" will not be able to run a country anyways to deal with Europe (and the rest of the world) is not our domain and governance doesn't befit Ulama, our effort should be for these people to become religious.
Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] and founder of "Pakistan"
On the 4th of June 1938, Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) prepared a Jamaat to give Dawah to Muslim league and appointed Allamah Shabbir Ahmed Usmani (RA) as the Ameer with specific instructions (in a letter) on what and how to communicate with Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
When this letter reached Allamah Shabbir Ahmed Usmani (RA) in Deoband his mother was ill so despite strong encouragement, he did not proceed which upset Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) visibly.
After the (loss of) this first opportunity, the second Jamaat was sent to Muslim league by Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) in December 1938.
This was the first message and meeting and afterwards Allamah Shabbir Ahmed Usmani (RA) continued to interact with Muhammad Ali Jinnah (RA) on behalf of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA).
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) used to write in Urdu while Muhammad Ali Jinnah (RA) used to respond in English. Due to the effort of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) and Mureeds particularly Allamah Shabbir Ahmed Usmani (RA) the Secular/Liberal Muhammad Ali Jinnah (RA) was brought closer to Islam (as evident) from his later discourses. After 1947, repeated efforts were to collect and publicize these letters but the descendants of both Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) (in India) and Muhammad Ali Jinnah (RA) (in Pakistan) were reluctant
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
