Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Misapprehension has no cure!"
Shaykh (RA) states in his Malfoozat Volume 1 (Malfooz 25)
I was corresponding with someone about Adhkaar and they also wanted some (reformation) advice. I advised them to refer to “Qasdus-Sabeel”, they replied that they did not understand it.
I advised them to refer to someone who has better understanding to which they replied that they don’t consider anyone worthy except their Aqa (i.e. Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam)).
How can I reform these people? I have no cure for misapprehension and stupidity!

Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Women going to the Market"
Loading Qur'aan Verse
[33:33] And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.
It can be understood from this verse that it is impermissible for a woman to go to the market or to appear in front of people or to appear in front of a stranger (Na-Mehram) in a state of adornment. However, in the case of need and necessity if she emerges in old (dishevelled clothes) and in a state of Purdah then it will be permissible.
وتمنع المرأة الشابة من كشف الوجه بين الرجال لا لأنه عورة بل لخوف الفتنة
Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Old Women travelling without Mehram"
He was asked to clarify if he has permitted old women to travel without Mehram and he responds:
...أما العجوز التي لا تشتهى فلا بأس بمصافحتها ومس يدها
I may have said it based on this (excerpt) of al-Dur al-Mukhtar but I cannot recall it fully. Nevertheless, the scope (of permissibility) exists.
P.S: I am unable to find the full text of (the Arabic commentary) which Hazrat (RA) is quoted but it is from the text above...

Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Accepting Government Funding for Madrasa"
If the Government promises that after (financial) support we will not intervene in the running of the Madrasa then it will be permissible to accept the support.
P.S: It should be kept in mind that in his time, the Government was the Colonial (Non-Muslim) British Government of India.

Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Superiority of abandoning Ruqya"
Shaykh (RA) responds to a question in Imadadul-Fatawa Volume 4 (Question 43)
I have developed some doubts about (permissible and impermissible) blowing (on oneself and others), which is prevalent in our times using the verses of the Quraan and I do not practise it at all. Is my point of view, incorrect? I consider Qur’aan to be speech of Allah Ta’ala but I wish to check with you about the authenticity of my Aqeedah?
It is permissible but it is superior not to do so. Your Aqeedah is correct!

Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Passport size photographs due to need "
What do Ulama state from the Shariah in the following circumstances:
Zaid has graduated with a (degree) in Engineering. A certificate was issued to him by the Government but the certificate contains a (half photograph i.e. passport size photograph) which is from the head to the chest similar to what is on the coins (containing the picture of George V). It is not possible to procure employment without showing this certificate. Is it permissible to get this (passport size) photograph taken? And to keep it with oneself? What about employment taken after showing this certification and will the income be permissible?
قال القهستاني : وفيه إشعار بأنه لا تكره صورة الرأس ، وفيه خلاف كما في اتخاذها كذا في المحيط
This indicates that due to difference in opinion, this will be permissible (due to need and necessity).
اذا تعارض المحرم والمبيح
However, when there is no (need and/or necessity) abstention (from taking passport size photograph) over taking it will be preferred.
Since the person in the question has a need, it will be permissible for that person to act on the scope (of permissibility).

Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) [1863-1943] on "Vaccinations "
Shaykh (RA) responds to a series of questions in Imadadul-Fatawa Volume 4 (Question 258,259,260)
In his day, the British were vaccinating people (forcibly) against smallpox. In those days, the medical technicians used to collect the “pus” from an ox or human infected with smallpox. They then used to make a small incision to a healthy human and apply the “pus” from an infected patient. The patient receiving the vaccine used to get a fever or develop some small smallpox lesions, some people had even died.
The British were forcing these vaccinations on Indians.
It was confirmed to him in the question that “pus” from a human smallpox patient was used in these vaccinations.
He (RA) was asked about this in a series in a questions.
2019 update:
No Haram ingredients are used in Britain today in vaccines apart from Fluenz (Nasal Flu Vaccine)

Please take care to check the accuracy of the translation. Much of the material from South Africa is generally of very poor quality and not referenced.
Jazakallahu Khayran.
Also notice the conext and the start of the response, it cannot be verbatim applied to our times as it clear from the answer.
The South Africans (as usual) are trying to mis-translate to prove some point.

This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
Please wait...
