Rules of Etiquette for The Saalikeen

ETIQUETTE WITHIN THE TARIQA

The salik yearning to learn tariqa should always keep the etiquette of the tariqa foremost above all else.

The salik should abstain from too much social contact with the world and engage himself in dhikr. This by no implies monasticism and seclusion, but at the same time he should cut himself off from the negative in society and remember his Lord in peace.
The salik should stay away from public gatherings with the intention that he is protecting the people from the evil that is within him. He should never consider himself superior to the others, otherwise he will be destroyed.
The salik should have sincere intention to attain the nearness of Allah by learning Suluk. He will be utterly destroyed if his intention is to become a shaykh.
The salik should not be restless or impatient if he does not succeed quickly in a particular lesson. He should remain steadfast, patient, and humble.
The salik should distribute any excess wealth that he has among the poor and thus prepare his way for the Hereafter.
The salik should abstain from delicious dishes and drinks and instead try to obtain the delicious taste of dhikr.
The salik should not become too overconfident at success, nor too disheartened at failure. He should be content with the will of Allah.
The salik should never regard his tariqat brethren with disdain.
The salik should keep away from things like television and music and stay desirous of attaining the beauties of the Holy Quran.
The salik should never become haughty due to the praise of others but consider this a test.
The salik should consider himself lower than the entire creation because he is unaware of the inner qualities of everything in creation.
The salik should punish his nafs if he mistakenly does something wrong. For example, he should repress desires and restrict the nafs from attaining things it wants.
The salik should abstain from things like the newspaper to get news of the outside world. These contain wrong things and attract towards the world, thus distracting the salik and removing him from his true purpose.
The salik should realize that his honor lies in humility and shame. In addition, his spiritual progress lies in outer disgrace.
The tailor tears clothing into pieces,
From those pieces making beautiful clothes.
No-one objects, but looks with respectful eyes.

The salik should not wish vengeance if someone wrongs him, but leave the matter to Allah and be patient. The Messenger of Allah continued to pray even though they pelted him with stones and tried to kill him.
The salik should try and only eat and sleep when the said urge arises, but abstain from eating and sleeping out of habitual times that he has set.
The salik should be very regular in his dhikr and not fall into the temptations of his nafs.
The salik should not praise or publicize his worship or good deeds, neither should praise arise in his heart.
The salik should not be desirous of miracles or fantastic happenings. If for some reason he becomes the recipient of such things, he should hide it and consider this a test.
The salik should never seek out worldly gatherings, but seek out the gatherings of the pious.
The salik should remember death constantly. This helps in breaking connection with the world.
The salik should seek out knowledge of what is necessary in life, and stay away from the ignorant and backward.
The salik should never look at anyone with lust except his wife.
The salik should constantly keep struggle to develop sincerity and ideal manners.
The salik should consider lawful earning and giving charity among his obligatory duties.
The salik should never discuss his troubles or hardships with anybody, be it a very close friend.
The salik should never betray a trust, and stay away from hypocrisy. Let him not be a friend of Allah on the outside, and an enemy within.
The salik should not focus his attention on his good attributes; neither should he focus on other people's bad attributes.
