(bism1)
(salaam)
Imam Malik rh.a related to me from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir rh.a that Umayma bint Ruqayqa rz.a said, "I went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with the women who took an oath of allegiance with him in Islam. They said, 'Messenger of Allah! We take a pledge with you not to associate anything with Allah, not to steal, not to commit adultery, not to kill our children, nor to produce any lie that we have devised between our hands and feet, and not to disobey you in what is known.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'In what you can do and are able.' " Umayma continued, "They said, 'Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than ourselves. Come, let us give our hands to you, Messenger of Allah!' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'I do not shake hands with women. My word to a hundred women is like my word to one woman.' "(Mu'atta Imam Malik,Book #55, Hadith #55.1.2)
There are several ahadis regarding the allegiance- the vow to follow Islam with submission to Allah swt N RasulAllah sallallahu alaihi wasallam-of Hz sahaba ikram rz.a with RasulAllah sallallahu alaihi wasallam. But in this modern world most of us are negligent n indifferent to follow the footsteps of our aslaf rz.a. Some of us are highly ignorant who even deny to perform allegiance at the hands of ahlullah to get our soul purified. They put their fallacious reasoning - 'when we've Quran n Hadis then what the need of allegiance is'. They discard this aspect- what the need for Hz sahaba ikram rz.a was when they had Quran in their hands n they're fortunate enough to listening the sayings n watching the doings of RasulAllah sallallahu alaihi wasallam(which are now compiled in form of books) with their own ears n eyes respectively.
Quran explicitly introduces the reality of success in Surah al shams wherein Allah swt states solemnly - not once or twice, rather 7 times n then opens this secret ''Qad aflaha man zakkaha''.
RasulAllah sallallahu alaihi wasallam came in this world to enable us to get us reserved a place in jannah by the process of of purification of our soul ''yuzakkihim''- which is the purpose of our lives.
We incorporate ulama, fuqha, muhaddisin, mufassirin, Qurra, mufti n all ahleilm even modern televengalsit like Dr Zakir Naik, Bilal Philips etc in '' fas'alu ahlzikkri in kuntum la ta'lamun'' n leave ahle batin from this category due to our indifference, negligence or blind following of anti tasawwuf brigade.
Commentaries, interpretation, translation of Quran n hadis is available on internet, in book depots, in publishing houses, in book fairs. Everybody may feel free to be benefited. We're praying salah, having fasts n doing Haj n knows all the ifs n buts in polemics despite 'none but I'm the best' propensity is overpowered. We're haughty, arrogant, liar for the sake of temporal benefits, voracious of wealth n fame for which we dont feel shy of violating the defined laws of shariah n dont feel hesitant to transgress all Islamic etiquettes.
We read ''innas salata tanha an il fah'sha'i wa l munkar'' n pray salah 5 times though but all bad habits, ill tendency n evil practices we're involved in but we dont know the 'taste of purification of soul' bcoz we dont need it likewise kuffar dont know the 'taste of Iman' as they're not interested. Iman is essential n obligatory to go into jannah- sooner or later.
Only purified souls will be allowed to enter the jannah, for which it may be casted into hell fire for purification if died without repentance. If our soul is purified before we die then InshaAllah we'll go into jannah without any torment n punishment in hell fire.
May Allah swt give us sound mind . Sound knowledge. Ameen

Hippy-happy tree hugging shuyukhs are definitely out of the question for me. i'm happy with the old fashion system of bay't. I just feel sorry for hamza Yusuf.he changed a lot and became more liberal then ever. I remember years ago in Brooklyn, he was giving a talk in masjid taqwa. I just happened to see him after he left and was in his car and the door was open so I stepped in and sat with him for a few minutes. I saw nothing but noor on his face but that was then. May allah guide and correct the shekh's opinion. It's upsetting that the fitna is breaking up the ulema of today.may allah help us all.ameen.

A lot of north american mashaikh and ulema are very similar to left leaning tree huggers. They have little regard for masculinity, courage and the traditional customs. I don't know what it is but america pulls people in....

is their proof in the sunnah of pledging allegiance to one man for spiritual reformation? (not including the prophet (saw) of course)

Dr76 has given the story of Zazan (RA) the singer and him making Taubah at the hands of Sayyidina Abdullah Ibn Masood (RA) as evidence. Story is as follows:

Once Abdullah ibn Masud رضي الله عنه was passing by an area in the city of Qufa. There, a group of wrong doing people have gathered to have a party. They were engrossed in drinking wine. A singer called Zazan was entertaining them with songs. Zazan had a very beautiful voice. When Abdullah ibn Masud heard his voice while passing by, he said in amazement, "So beautiful is his voice. How wonderful it would be if he had used that voice to recite the Quran!" After saying this, Abdullah covered his head with a cloth and left that place. When Zazan noticed Abdullah ibn Masud leaving, he asked, "Who is that man and what was he saying?" The people in the gathering told him, "He is Abdullah ibn Masud, a companion of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He said that your voice is very beautiful. How wonderful it would be if you had used your voice to recite the Quran!"

Zazan was struck by his comments. He threw away his musical instrument and ran to Abdullah ibn Masud. The two of them embraced each other and shed tears profusely. Abdullah ibn Masud said to him, "Why should I not love the one who loves Allah?" Thereafter, Jazan repented to Allah and stayed in the company of Abdullah ibn Masud to learn the Quran and other teachings of Islam. He learned to such an extent that he became one of the great scholars of his time.

Allamah Ibn Katheer (RA) mentions clearly that he made Taubah at the hands of Sayyidina Abdullah Ibn Masood (RA) and Mashaykh of Tassawuff say that Bayt is just Taubah!

It is proof of giving Bayt to someone other then Sayyidina Rasul-ullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) or Khaleefa or Jihad and Zazaan (RA) did remain in the company of Sayyidina Abdullah Ibn Masood (RA) and learnt from him until he met Allah (SWT).

If Bayt is Taubah then this is evidence but I don't know the ins and outs of other bits of Tassawuff.

i have no problem with the concept of pledging to do certain good acts or pledging to refrain from doing certain bad acts. what i am trying to understand is the concept of pledging ones allegiance to a particular shaikh at the exclusion of other shaikhs/ulama/imams etc. they try to prove this is from the sunnah by quoting such hadith as you have quoted, but they dont actually address the issue which is pledging allegiance to one particular person and excluding all others.

This is Ijtehaad of Ulamah for the last few centuries because they believe that pledging to one Shaykh is beneficial. In the past people didn't refer to one Shaykh only...

I have heard that pledging to one Shaikh is necesarry, and all or most Auliya Allah agree on this. The reason being when one is getting treated one goes to one doctor and takes medicine from one, not two at the same time.

For example you want to lose weight and get strong and fit, one coach might put you on a low carb high protein diet and another coach might put you on a intermittent fasting diet. There's no way you can do both together if you want to see results.

Same way in Tariqat' the allegiance to one is necesarry for you to progress. That's a different thing that the Shaikh you find is not a Shaikh at all, but then that's your luck.

Insh'Ala one of the brothers will be able to further elaborate on this.

The wordings of Bayat are similar to those taken at the blessed hands of Hazrat Khatim un Nabiyeen (saw) that of Tauba.. of obedience to Allah and his Rasool (saw) , to abstain from Shirk..Bid'ah.. Haram.. etc.. and follow a life based on Qur'an and sunnah..
someone has posted a clip of Shaikh Hazrat Maulana Talha sahab kandhelwi db taking bayat on youtube.. kindly search.. i would have posted the link but it seems forum rules doesnt allow here..
