I am currently reading "History of Islam" (Volume 2) and I find it hard to stomach the manner in which some Sahabah (radiyallahu anhum) are frankly criticized.
Then I found this SF thread about the author Maulana Akbar Shah Najeebabadi
www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?59694-Maulana-Naj...
On top of that, the book was revised by an Ahl-i-Hadith scholar and then published by Saudi Salafis...

I might stick to the post-Sahabah eras and not read Vol.1 and beginning of Vol.2.
Does anyone recommend other similar Islamic History books in English?

Many others have spoken out about the salafi print and criticised it. Personally speaking I don't like the book at all and would not recommend it, reason being most will not understand its briefness if they dont have some kind of understanding/knowledge about the historical events, so for a newbie very hard to keep up and understand. Didn't rate the book at all.

Hayatus Sahaba and Dr. Salabee's books are good contenders.

For those who have doubts about tasawwuf, they should read "Tasawwuf kya hai" By Moulana Manzoor Noumani RhA. It is best for laymen who want to know the truth/haqiqat of tasawwuf. In start of this book he describes his visiting of Raipur shareef and how Hazrat Raipuri RhA defined tasawwuf ........ The book is in very easy Urdu and every one can easily understand. Don't know if there is any English translation.

You should read Ruhama o Bainahum by Shaykh Muhammad Naafay instead of "History of Islam".
It's a very good four volume book about Khulafa e Rashideen and their relationship with Ahlul Baet. It has refuted shia from their own sources. Very good book. I recommend it.
