Thousands have protested across the Middle East and North Africa against a film made in the US that depicts the Prophet Muhammad. What is in the film and why it has enraged so many people?

How did the film come to public attention?

The video was first posted online on 1 July without attracting much attention. It was later picked up by various Arab TV stations, with religious Egyptian TV channel al-Nas's presenter Sheikh Khalad Abdalla broadcasting scenes on 8 September. A clip from his show, dubbed into Arabic, was posted online and within days had been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.

The Afghan government says it has blocked YouTube to prevent people from watching it.

White House officials have asked YouTube to consider whether the film breaches its own guidelines. These guidelines include the stipulation: "We encourage free speech and defend everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. But we do not permit hate speech..."

Google, which owns YouTube, said in a statement that the video was "clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube", but added that "given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt" it had restricted access to the video in both countries.

What does the film show?

The video, a trailer for a longer film entitled Innocence of Muslims, appears to depict Islam as a religion of violence and hate, and its Prophet Muhammad as a foolish and power-hungry man.

It opens with a scene in which a Coptic family in a newly radicalised Islamic Egypt is attacked by a group of Muslims while police look on without intervening. The father tells his daughters that Muslims want to kill all Christians and that the Islamic state is hiding their crimes.

It then shows the Prophet Muhammad and his life with his family and his followers in the desert. [censored]

The video implies Khadija is behind the creation of the Koran, which is described as a combination of subversions of the Torah and the New Testament.

The trailer depicts Muhammad and his followers as killers, looters and extortionists. In one scene the Prophet sanctions the sexual abuse of children; in another, he says he is gay.

Why is it so offensive?

Depicting the Prophet Muhammad in any way already defies Islamic belief, let alone satirising him. His wife Khadija and his earliest companions are also revered in their own right in Islam, and so mocking these individuals is also considered serious blasphemy.

The founding principle of Islam is that the Koran is the direct word of God, revealed to Muhammad in order that he impart it to humankind. Depicting Khadija as planning to concoct a holy book out of the Old and New Testament defies an intrinsic Islamic belief.

Other references to Muhammad's affairs with women, his greed and violence would clearly be insulting in any context.

What do we know about how it was put together?

The entire film is thought to be around an hour long, although most have only seen a 14-minute trailer which has now been widely circulated on the internet in English and Arabic.

The fuller version had a showing in a small Los Angeles cinema, the Vine Theatre, in June, where its title was The Innocence of Bin Laden.

It was clearly put together on a budget, with a cheaply made set, amateur actors and poor production standards. It was shot over five days at a California film studio in August last year, with a cast of around 50, together with a large production crew.

The most offensive parts of the film appear not to have been in the original, but dubbed over the soundtrack at a later date.

Who is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula?

The now infamous trailer for the film was posted through a Youtube account linked to the name 'sambacile' - originally reported as an Israeli-born Jewish estate agent who had raised $5m (£3.1m) from Jewish donors in the US to make the film. But this person did not exist.

US authorities now say they have identified Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian living in California, as the man who made the film.

Mr Nakoula, who was found guilty of fraud in 2010 and ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution, is thought to have used the pseudonym "Sam Bacile" to hide his identity. He denies the allegations.

What do the actors say about it?

They say they were misled about the film entirely, claiming that the original film had nothing to do with Islam or Muhammad, and that all references to him and insults to the religion were added post-production.

Cindy Lee Garcia, who had a small role in the film, told Gawker.com that she and others were given a script for a film called Desert Warriors, and that it would be a historical drama set in the Middle East. Ms Garcia also said she had seen Mr Nakoula on set.

Who else appears to have been involved in the making of the film?

An American right-wing extremist called Steve Klein, linked with various anti-Islamic groups in California, has said he promoted the film but does not know the identity of the director.

According to Salon, Mr Klein cultivated links with Californian Coptic Christian Joseph Nasralla, who has been identified as president and CEO of Media for Christ, the organisation alleged to have produced the film.

Media for Christ is based in Duarte, California, and advertises its mission as promoting Christian values.

Pastor Terry Jones, from Florida, who gained notoriety after threatening to burn a copy of the Koran over plans to build an Islamic cultural centre near the site of the World Trade Center, has said he was in touch with a Mr Bacile over promotion of the film, but did not meet him and could not identify him.

According to Gawker.com, soft-porn director Alan Roberts was brought in to work on the film by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. The site says he too may not have been aware what he was actually working on.

Is there something more going on here than protests about a film?

As was evident after Danish cartoons of Muhammad were published in 2006, politicians and religious leaders in the region used perceived insults to Islam to rally public support.

Protests began to spread from Egypt to other countries - spurred on perhaps by local media - because of a long-standing mistrust and anger at the West, something a number of groups have been able to capitalise upon.

Middle East analyst Magdi Abdelhadi says that although the film will have caused genuine offence among many Muslims, groups like Al Qaeda, whose black flag has been seen at some of the protests, have seized the opportunity to stir up unrest.

Disillusionment, lack of opportunity and anger at the establishment is also feeding into the protests, analysts say.

Summary of article. So many questionable, doubtful and incomplete information. Hard to swallow but here's a summary and then there's nothing to do but judge for yourself. Common sense will tell you what you need to know.

  • White House officials have asked YouTube to consider whether the film breaches its own guidelines
  • Google, which owns YouTube, says that the video was "clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube",
  • However, how youtube can still consider that it doesn't breach the following guideline of theirs I will never understand:
    Quote:
We encourage free speech and defend everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. But we don't permit hate speech (speech which attacks or demeans a group based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, and sexual orientation/gender identity).

  • The video is filled with every detail to disgrace, humiliate and defile Islam with lie upon lie through fiction and no historical basis.
  • The first showing was in a small Los Angeles cinema, the Vine Theatre, in June, where its title was The Innocence of Bin Laden.
  • YouTube user "sambacile" was initially linked the making of the video
  • Known to be an Israeli-born Jewish estate agent who had raised $5m from Jewish donors in the US to make the film
  • US then claim this person does not exist
  • US authorities now say they have identified Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian living in California, as the man who made the film.
  • Nakoula found guilty of fraud in 2010 according to BBC is thought to have used the name "Sam Bacile" - Nakoula, naturally denies the allegations
  • The actors say they were mislead and lied to
  • The actors claim they were given a script entitled "Desert Warriors"
  • An American right-wing extremist called Steve Klein, linked with various anti-Islamic groups in California, has said he promoted the film but does not know the identity of the director
  • "porn" director Alan Roberts was brought in to work on the film
  • The reports claim he "may not have not known" what he was working on

I think this thread should be deleted/edited, simply because it creates sick images in the mind and it is not good for our Imaan.

The actions people are taking around the world is more than highly justified. If we post news articles etc, the message will still go out.

I dont think we need to have details of what is in the movie. There are Kuffar sites doing that anyway. For us, it is enough to know that our Beloved Prophet (saw) has been insulted. This is enough to create hatred for these dispicable people.

Rasullulah would give orders of assassinations for those who blasphemed against him.

One line censored. The rest is for information purposes and should be put here. Many Kuffar have no idea how bogus this is and probably will believe parts of this sick American production. I have put this up as I was unaware of how shady this entire production is. I see no harm in making more people aware of this. We have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. As I said to a friend today, these attacks are as old as the Jews in Madinah writing poems about the Prophet. And history teaches us the fate of these enemies of Allah.

Jazakallah for the Censor.

Theres nothing for us Muslims to be ashamed of, we are proud of every moment of Our Prophets life, Alhumdulillah.

Stupid acts like these only make the non muslims eager to find out more, and in many cases will find the truth and accept Islam as their way of life.

I'm afraid that any attempt to have the video removed would be pretty futile because by the looks of it, it does not breach Youtube's guidance on videos- they've refused even a white house request to have it removed......." King orders blocking of web links to anti-Islam film

JEDDAH: ARAB NEWS

Wednesday 19 September 2012

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has ordered Saudi telecom authorities to block the websites that show the nefarious film that denigrates Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islam.

“On the basis of the king’s directives all Internet service providers in the Kingdom have been instructed to block the film on users in Saudi Arabia,” said the Telecommunications and Information Technology Commission.

“We have told Google to block all YouTube links containing the film. If the company fails to do so we’ll block YouTube completely,” said TITC, the Kingdom’s telecom regulator.

People have been advised to inform TITC if they found any Internet sites showing the film by either contacting www.Internet .gov.sa or www.citc.gov.sa to block them.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) earlier urged its 57 member countries to speak in one voice against the filthy film that tarnished the image of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

“All member countries should speak forcefully in one voice on this vital issue,” said Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told a press conference, which was held to highlight OIC’s efforts to take up the issue.

He said the upcoming OIC foreign ministers’ annual meeting in New York would discuss all initiatives to set out a complete plan to confront growing provocative incidents such as the nefarious film.

Ihsanoglu said he had contacted US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Arabi and Catherine Ashton of the European Union on taking international measures to avoid a repetition of such provocative incidents.

The OIC has been pushing for years for some kind of a global law against defamation of religion at the UN Human Rights Council.

But it was not passed due to opposition from the US, Europe and some Latin American countries which argued it would violate free speech and the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Assalamu'alaykum.w.w.
Our beloved Nabi of Allah Ta'ala (Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam) in his lifetime was faced with physical, verbal and psychological abuse.
When he walked, they (the non believers) put thorns in his path.
When he went to Ta'if, he was pelted with stones to such an extent that his sandals filled with blood.
His beloved uncle, (Hamzah RA) was killed & mutilated to such an extent that His crying made the angels cry.
He had animal entrails put on him whilst in prayer, human & animal waste thrown into his house.
His daughters were divorced because he would not stop inviting people.
Despite all of this, He never lifted his hand in anger, never cursed, did not instruct his followers to go on destructive protests! Rather, he lifted his hands in prayer to beg Allah for their salvation & guidance.
Today, our Nabi (Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam) is not being assaulted but His memory is being insulted. Let us follow the example that the best of all creations has left for us and pray for the guidance & salvation of the non believers and the Muslims.

No amount of propaganda or slander is ever going to diminish who or what he was. May Allah Ta'ala grant us all the true love of the greatest of mankind, not only by verbal statements but also by emulating him to the finest detail. That is true love.

I am sorry, O Prophet...'

Arnoud Van Doorn, former leader of the Dutch rightist Freedom Party, prays at the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. - (Image removed)

Okaz/Saudi Gazette

MADINAH - Former Dutch Islamophobe and a former leading member of far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders' party Arnoud Van Doorn visited the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah to pray and say sorry for becoming part of a blasphemous film.

Doorn was among the Freedom Party leaders who produced the blasphemous film, Fitna. Last month he reverted to Islam after an extensive study about the religion and the Prophet (peace be upon him).

He said that the worldwide outrage against the film made him study about the Prophet (pbuh) and that eventually led to his conversion.

He headed for Makkah to perform Umrah after meeting the two imams of the Prophet's Mosque, Sheikh Ali Al-Hudaifi and Sheikh Salah Al-Badar, who enlightened him on how to lead the life of a good Muslim and confront challenges facing Islam in the West.

A member of the Dutch parliament and The Hague City Council, Doorn announced his decision to accept Islam on his Twitter profile. He also posted a tweet in Arabic declaring that "there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet."

At first, other users took the news as a joke. After all, an active supporter of a notorious Dutch hater of Islam, Wilders, he repeatedly approved Islamophobic statements and public actions, and personally participated in them.

But Doorn, who now serves as a regional adviser at the City Hall in The Hague, personally confirmed his decision to practice Islam in an official letter to the city mayor.

Most recently, the politician filed a formal application to the mayor of the city to allow him to perform prayers obligatory for Muslims during his working hours.

"I can understand people are skeptic, especially that it is unexpected for many of them," Doorn told Al-Jazeera English satellite channel.

"This is a very big decision, which I have not taken lightly."

"In my own close circle people have known that I have been actively researching the Qur'an, Hadith, Sunnah and other writings for almost a year now," he said.

"In addition, I have had numerous conversations with Muslims about the religion."

Driven by his party's anti-Islam discourse, Doorn decided to dig in for the truth about the religion himself.

"I have heard so many negative stories about Islam, but I am not a person who follows opinions of others without doing my own research," he said. "Therefore, I have actually started to deepen my knowledge of Islam out of curiosity."

The 46-year-old has continued on The Hague Council as an independent candidate since splitting from Wilders's party. Doorn's decision to embrace Islam has won mixed reactions in the Netherlands.

"According to some people I am a traitor, but according to most others I have actually made a very good decision," he told Al-Jazeera.

"The reactions are generally positive and I also received quite some support via twitter.

"It feels good that people who do not know me personally have understanding of my situation and support me in my choice."

Asked if he now regretted joining the Freedom Party, he replied: "I have learned that every experience in life has a purpose. However, with the knowledge I have today, I would have undoubtedly made a different choice."

For the Dutch politician, finding Islam was finally guiding him to the true path in his life. "I have made mistakes in life as many others. From these mistakes I have learned a lot," Doorn said.

"And by my conversion to Islam I have the feeling that I finally found my path. I realize that this is a new start and that I still have much to learn as well."

Ex-Islamophobe to produce film on Prophet

Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques,
delivers a copy of the Holy Qur’an to Arnoud Van Doorn during a reception in Makkah on Sunday as Shahzad Muhammad,
head of the Canadian Dawa Association (CDA)

23 April 2013 - 13 Jumada Al-Akhir 1434 H

MADINAH – Former Dutch Islamophobe Arnoud Van Doorn unveiled plans to produce an international film on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islam.

In an exclusive interview with Okaz/Saudi Gazette, Doorn, who reverted to Islam last month, said that he will devote his life fully to spread the true message of Islam and the Prophet of Mercy through promoting the film across the world.

“I will spare no efforts to protect the rights of Muslims in all European countries as well as to serve Islam and its followers throughout the world. I will try my best to repair the damage that I caused to Islam and its Prophet (peace be upon him) through the film ‘Fitna’,” he said.

Doorn, a former leading member of far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders’ party, visited Saturday the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah to pray and say sorry for becoming part of the blasphemous film. Doorn was among the Freedom Party leaders who produced the film, Fitna.

After visiting the Prophet’s Mosque, he arrived in Makkah Sunday and performed Umrah. Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, and other presidency officials received him.

In the interview, Doorn said that he regrets being a part of such an offensive film. “However, now it is a closed chapter and absolutely I don’t want to recall about it. The film that sparked widespread reactions was a totally wrong step on our part as it contains a lot of misleading and incorrect information that are nothing to with this noble divine religion and its Prophet (pbuh),” he said, adding that he wants to do some remedial work so as to minimize the damage caused by ‘Fitna.’

Doorn said he decided, in cooperation with the Toronto-based CDA, to produce an international film aimed at removing misgivings about Islam and its Prophet (pbuh).

“I will use all my experience in producing an alternative film, which will speak about the true image of Islam and all aspects of the personality of the Prophet (pbuh) as well as his great qualities.”

Doorn repented for his involvement in the blasphemous film. “It was unfortunate that I did not make any efforts to know what really Islam is and who is the Prophet (pbuh) before blindly believing in the misinformation campaign being unleashed by the anti-Islamic forces. When I came to realize that it was not Islam, I decided to study about the religion and that led to my conversion,” he said. “Now, I am really enjoying the beauty of Islam and am extremely delighted in Allah’s great blessing to guide me onto His path. It is an explicable experience for me,” he said adding that his former colleagues in the Freedom Party are angry at his acceptance of Islam, which is still a bête noire for them. “The party stands against Islam and its spreading in Europe. Some of them now consider me as a traitor.”

Doorn has a message to those who oppose his reversion to Islam. “Let me tell them that this is my personal decision and I see a new life in Islam that I don’t want any way to give it up. I happened to see on social networking sites several comments, expressing feelings of antagonism and hatred toward me,” he said adding that all these sprang out of ignorance, contempt and animosity against Islam and the Muslims.

He also thanked all those who supported him and commended him for beginning a new life as a Muslim.

Referring to his visit to the holy land, Doorn said: “Had anybody mentioned me about visiting the land of the two holy mosques earlier, I would have called him a lunatic.

“But what happened now is realization of a dream and it is still unbelievable for me that I am now in the holy city that hosted the Prophet (pbuh).” He continued saying: “I couldn’t control my feelings when I stood in front of the grave of the Prophet (pbuh) as well as in Rawdah Sharif, near the pulpit used by the Prophet (pbuh). When I prayed at Rawdah Sharaif, my eyes were full of tears as I had the feeling that I am in a part of the Paradise.”

Doorn said that he amazed to see the intensity of love and affection the Muslims have to their Prophet (pbuh). “I also realized the intensity of hatred that some Westerners have against Islam and the Prophet (pbuh) and that was based apparently on their ignorance and prejudice.

“Therefore, I decided to make endeavors to repair the damage caused by the offensive film, which was produced with an ulterior motive of creating sedition in between Muslims and non-Muslims,” he said adding that he took a pledge in front of the grave of the Prophet (pbuh) that he would strive to spread his true message and his great qualities that are instrumental in promoting peace and harmonious relations among the people worldwide.

While thanking CDA for introducing Islam to him, Doorn unveiled his plans to associate with its Dawa wing, which is comprised of several well-known Islamic preachers and scholars.
