Central-Mosque.com article to write, work in progress.

Based on the explicit command in the Qur'aan, it is NOT permissable for a woman to display herself even in Hijab & Niqab for Dawah purpose unnecessarily.

[33:32] O wives of the prophet, you are not like any other women, if you observe taqwa (righteousness). So, do not be too soft in your speech, lest someone having disease in his heart should develop fancies (about you); and do speak with appropriate words. [33:33] Remain in your homes, and do not display (your) beauty as it used to be displayed in the days of earlier ignorance; and establish Salah, and pay Zakah, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah only intends to keep (all sorts of) filth away from you, O members of the family (of the prophet), and to make you pure through a perfect purification.

Salafi Fatwa:

Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahmaan ibn Naasir al-Barraak (may Allah preserve him) was asked: What is the ruling on a female daa‘iyah appearing on TV in full shar‘i hijab for the purpose of da‘wah and fatwas?

He replied:

Praise be to Allah. To proceed:

The basic principle is that the woman is fitnah in her image and her voice. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “I am not leaving behind me any fitnah more harmful to men than women.” (Agreed upon). Hence those who follow their whims and desires are very keen to introduce women into all media programming, both audio and video. Based on that, it is not permissible for a woman to appear on TV, even if she is wearing hijab, in the name of da‘wah and giving fatwas, because innumerable men will listen to her even if she only appears on the channel on the basis of teaching women. Moreover, there is no need for her to undertake da‘wah and issue fatwas via TV channels. The basic principle is that that is to be done by men, and men are more suited to that. Throughout Islamic history men have been the ones to teach, call people to Islam and issue fatwas in the mosques and so on. They are the khateebs and imams. It is not permissible for women to do any of these things unless it is among other women.

Moreover it is well known that women’s participation in video and audio media results in things that are contrary to sharee‘ah, such as their going out unnecessarily, mixing with men, making images of them even if they do wear hijab. This results in negative consequences that Islam came to prevent, as Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.

And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance”

[al-Ahzaab 33:32-33].

A woman may be making a display of herself in her clothing even if she wears hijab.

Based on the above I say: It is not permissible for a woman to appear on satellite TV channels as a daa‘iyah, mufti or teacher. Rather she should restrict her da‘wah activities to her fellow women at home or in a school or in the women’s prayer space in the mosque.

On this occasion we advise our sisters who are in charge of Islamic channels to fear Allah and not to be deceived by the words of those who have wrong views and do not see anything wrong with women appearing on Islamic channels and even promote that and support it with specious arguments. It is sufficient to note that this is in accordance with the whims and desires of modernists, who do not care about anything but falsehood or that which leads to falsehood. Hence they like the Islamic channels on which women appear and they regard them as keeping pace with modern times, and they do not like the channels on which no women appear and they regard them as backward and describe the people in charge of them as being extremists. These people are like those of whom Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“but those who follow their lusts, wish that you (believers) should deviate tremendously away from the Right Path”

[an-Nisa’ 4:27].

We ask Allah to guide us to the straight path and to keep us away from the path of those who earned His Anger and of those who went astray. End quote from Shabakat Noor al-Islam.

And Allah knows best.

One may argue that the verse only refers to the WIVES OF THE PROPHET (SAW), therefore here is another verse to refute that argument.

India's Darul Uloom Deoband: Women Cannot Preach Or Deliver Sermons

India's prominent Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa declaring that Muslim women cannot preach religion in interior areas as per Islamic tenets, according to an Urdu-language daily.

According to a report in the Urdu-language daily Roznama Munsif, the Dar-ul-Ifta (the department that issues edicts) of Darul Uloom Deoband said that only Muslim men can preach Islam in interior areas of the country.

The response came in reply to a question from one A. K. Qasmi of Muzaffarnagar town in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Qasmi wanted to know the Islamic position on whether Muslim women can go to interior places to preach religion and deliver a sermon.

The fatwa issued by the Darul Uloom Deoband said, "It is the duty of men to deliver sermons in such areas under Islamic laws, but the same cannot be said about women."

Q554: listening to Quran in a females voice
Q3.what is worse? watching an indian moovie which contains music, nude women or listening to a women who is covered up with a headscarf praying quran on youtube? i know they are both wrong but i would like to know which is a bigger sin?

A3. The voice of a female is attractive and therfore regarded as an awrah.

Allah says in the quran. فلا تخضعن بالقول فيطمع الذي في قلبه مرض
Trans: (Wives of the prophet!)"Do not be tender in your speech, lest people in whose hearts there is sickness may lust after you" (33:32)

One Hadith says: "المرءة عورة فإذا خرجت استشرفها الشيطان ولا تكون اقرب الي الله منها في قعر بيتها"

A female is awrah ( that which should be concealed) when she leaves her abode, shaytan raises eyebrows at her, she cannot be more closer to Allah than when she is in the inner part of her house. (Mishkaat) So listening to a female's voice can be allowed when needed, however, without necessity or when lust overcomes, it will be a sin to do so.

The similitude of what you have asked is like a person asking whether one would rather be buried alive or burnt alive. Naturally, a person would prefer neither. Likewise, asking which of two things is the greater sin assumes a person has the capacity to withstand the punishment that such an act would incur. The punishment of the Hereafter is very severe and a person should never assume that they will be able to bear it. Consequently, one should avoid all kinds of sins and should not concern oneself with which is the bigger sin.

Asslamo Allaikum Shaykh (Hazrat) Mufti Saheb (DB),

It is my understanding that the vocie of a woman is NOT awrah in the Hanafi Madhab The Ayaat apply to the situation but NOT because the voice (of a woman) is awrah but because they are trying to beauity it (during recitation. I would like some clarification on the matter.

Mufti Muhammad Ibn Adam - According to the preferred opinion within the Hanafi School of Islamic law, the voice of a female is not considered part of her nakedness (awra). As such, in general situations, it is permitted for a man to converse with a woman and listen to her voice. However, if there is a fear of falling into some unlawful activity or evil (fitna), then the male should avoid listening to the woman's voice.

Walaikumussalam w w

Qadhi Thanaullah panipati rahmatullahi alayhi writes in 'Ma Labudda Minhu' p56

'A woman's voice is also part of her awrah. Therefore, if a woman should (in the presence of a non mahram) read her salat aloud, the salat will be invalid'

I just want direct you to the first sentence. It has been an agreed upon factor that a woman's voice is also awrah.

Therefore, she should be very careful. and others should also avoid deriving sexual pleasure from her sweet and attractive tune, even if it's through recitation of the Quran, in fact I would say that, that would be even worse.

Wassalam

Asslamo Allaikum Brother,

There are three separate issues which you are discussing:

  1. The status of voice of a woman being Awrah.
  2. Women speaking in an enticing and alluring tone.
  3. Men deriving pleasure from the voice of a woman.

Voice of a woman is NOT Aurah according to Dhahir Riwayah and the most established opinion of the Madhab, having said that It doesn't mean that woman has the right to joke, talk un-necessarily etc so I hope that you are not mixing and matching the two issues and we are discussing the ruling and not the licence to engage in witty, chatty banter between members of opposite sex.

2 & 3 are obvious so no comments are necessary as it is HARAM for a man to listen to melodious sweet voice of a woman.

Attached is the original Persian of Mala Budda Minhu with urdu translation underneath and the translation is, “It is written in Durr-e-Nawazil that voice of a woman is worthy of being hidden and Imam Ibn Humam (RA) states that by definition if a woman recite Qur’aan loudly in Salah then her Salah is invalidated”

  1. Yes there is no problem with the statement that its worthy of being hidden
  2. Reciting loudly in Salah will invlaite her Salah
  3. BUT I have highlighted in BLACK and RED circle to show the difference because 2 lines below Hazrat specifically used the word Satar-e-Aurat (Aurah) while for voice he doesn't.

It doesn't say anywhere that the voice of a woman is Aurah? Please point out my mistake.

to me the translation would be

"It is written in Durr-e-Nawazil that the voice of a women is also aurat."

then in brackets the translator of the persian text has written as a definition of aurat "worthy of being hidden"

Jazakullah Khairun for the response. Checking with a Shaykh who is a Senior graduate from Saharanpur and fluent in Farsi if I have misunderstood the quotation and will Insha'Allah respond as soon as Maulana kinds explains the matter to me.

Asslamo Allaikum Hazrat,

My understanding has always been that normal voice of a woman is NOT AWRAH but melodious voice of a woman is AWRAH as stated from the first post. This doesn’t mean that I am supporting women talking unnecessarily and mingling with members of the opposite gender. I double-checked my understanding with knowledgeable Ulamah and got a confirmation that indeed normal voice of a woman in the Madhab is NOT AWRAH but melodious voice of a woman is AWRAH.

I wanted to confirm with multiple Ulamah before responding.

May Allah (SWT) reward you for your patience with a Jaahil like me. I wanted to consult our local Imam Qari (Maulana) Surati Saheb (DB) who studied at Saharunpur and had the great fortune of being in the company of Shaykhul-Hadeeth (Maulana) Zakariyya Kandhalwi (RA) and he is fluent in Persian to directly check the text of Hazrat Allamah Qadi Thanaullah Panipatti (RA) in original Persian.

First and foremost Hazrat, I would like to accept my mistake in translation and indeed Hazrat Allamah Qadi Thanaullah Panipatti (RA) has stated in Persian that the voice of a woman is Aurah on the basis of Nawazil and may Allah (SWT) reward you for your patience and grant you Firdausal-Aala (Ameen).

However this contradicts Imam Ibn Humam (RA) in Fathul-Qadeer who states categorically on the basis of Nawazil (itself) that “melodious voice of a woman is AWRAH” and here is the text:

صرح في النوازل بأن نغمة المرأة عورة ، وبنى عليه أن تعلمها القرآن من المرأة أحب إلي من الأعمى ، قال : لأن نغمتها عورة ، ولهذا قال عليه الصلاة والسلام

التسبيح للرجال والتصفيق للنساء
فلا يحسن أن يسمعها الرجل انتهى كلامه .

Raddul-Muhtaar also says the same:

قال ابن عابدين في حاشيته على الدر المختار وهو حنفي قوله: (وصوتها) معطوف على المستثنى يعني أنه ليس بعورة.

I don’t have Nawazil to check the original statement so I am relying on Imam Ibn Humam (RA) quotation and also Imam Ibn Abideen (RA).

Our dear and beloved Shaykh (Mufti) Shafi (RA) in Maariful-Qur’aan has also stated that the voice of woman is not Awrah:

Jazakullah Khairun for your patience and requesting your duas.
