1) Sadaqat-ul-fitr is an obligation for every Muslim, male or female, who owns 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent, either in the form of money, ornaments, stock-in-trade, or in the form of some goods or commodities beyond one's normal needs. If a person has some minor children, the same amount has to be paid on behalf of each one of them separately

2) The prescribed amount of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is 1.75 Kilograms of wheat or its value in money.

3) Sadaqat-ul-fitr is obligated on each adult male or female separately, and the relevant adult person himself is responsible to pay it. The husband is not required to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of his wife nor is the wife supposed to pay it on behalf of her husband.

4) It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-ul-fitr is paid before performing the 'Eid prayer. It can also be paid before the 'Eid day, but it is not advisable to delay it up to the performance of'Eid prayer

5) Sadaqat-ul-fitr should be paid only to a person who is entitled to receive Zakah.

Mufti Taqi Usmani (DB) says:
Price of Flour in United Kingdom
  1. ASDA Brown Bread Flour: £ 0.853/KG OR £1.49 for Fitrana
  2. ASDA Plain Flour: £ 0.601/KG OR £ 1.051 for Fitrana
  3. ASDA (Smart Price) Plain Flour: £ 0.347/KG OR £ 0.607 for Fitrana

Instead of saying "2) The prescribed amount of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is 1.75 Kilograms of wheat or its value in money." wouldn't it be better to say: "2) The prescribed minimum amount of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is 1.75 Kilograms of wheat or its value in money"? Then you might suggest other things like raisins... for those who are living a more luxurious life-style...

Asslamo Allaikum Maulana,

  1. You can suggest to Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA) to change the wording in his Fatwa, those words are not mine.
  2. Muslim ruled the world until 1924 (Khilafa) so we were certainly never really poor from the time of Sayyidina Umar (RA), in fact we are poorest right now.

Asslamo Allaikum All,

Just to clarify on the point raised by our respected Maulana, previously. One of the well known Ulamah who are of the opinion that Fitrana should be paid in Raisins instead of wheat is Shaykh (Maulana) Tariq Jameel Saheb (HA) and you will see the discussions in the SF thread linked.

So those who want to opt out of the opinion of Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA) and go for the opinion of Shaykh (Maulana) Tariq Jameel Saheb (HA) are welcome to do so but frankly I would rather stick with Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA)

I think here, it is mixed with Zakat. Because as much we have heard, Head of the Family "Sarbarah" is supposed to give Fitrana on behalf of his dependents

Asslamo Allaikum,

Wife with a source of income (jewellary etc) is not a dependent but minor children are. However if the husband pays it the obligation will be discharged.

Dear Sir

Assalam o Alaikum

I want to know that if Fitrana is skipped unintentionally, i mean if some one separated the amount to give fitrana before eid, but couldn't find time due to busy schedule and forgot to pay fitrana, unintentionally, then in that case, what should be done, should the amount be paid after Eid or should it be paid with jaziya/kafara, and what amount. What are the conditions and implications for paying fitrana after Eid? I will be very grateful for your kind response.
