Introduction

Personally, as a devoted football fan, I write this article with a great burden upon my heart. Always looking for a loophole in which I may be able to dodge the issues these injunctions present me with. However, no luck! Football is an addiction! Each and everytime I sit down and think to myself, Now what benefit do I get from supporting a football team? My heart always fails to find an answer. Every time I ask myself, what do I gain by purchasing a certain football kit? I again fail to find an answer. I ask myself a whole list of questions, but all the replies are in the negative.

Approximately 1400 years ago . . .

...the world was engulfed in darkness, indecency was prevalent, cries for a reformer were loud and clear, the world was begging for the man whom Allah had promised it, upon its initial creation. Oceans of oppression and wilderness were overflowing.
The Quranic explanation of this particular era is clear and vivid:
‘Corruption was prevalent on the Earth and ocean'

(Al Room 30:41)

A Great Favour

Allah bestowed this world with His greatest creation, whom he had promised would reform the world. Making it a better place to live. After years of constant striving a small but courageous group of Arab individuals placed their hearts in his hands. Each and every advice or request made from his part was treated like a commandment. They promptly sacrificed their health, wealth and lives on his behalf and on the behalf of his revolution, more importantly for the sake of their Lord. In return their hearts were liberated from the evils and indecencies of their time, making them the perfect specimens, to gain salvation and more significantly, he changed their previous barbaric actions and lifestyle into humane. These people were the ideal humans. The Quran constantly describes their attributes. To make the Muslims fully aware that salvation only remains in following their footsteps, a salvation of this world and the Hereafter.
Imaam Muslim (rahmatullahi alaihe) narrates on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik Radiallah anhu in the section of Al-Bir, ‘A person came in the presence of the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam and asked: "When shall the Day of Judgement take place?" Upon this the Prophet of Allah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam questioned: "How have you prepared?" The person answered: "I have prepared not, with an abundance of Salaah, Zakah or Saum. However, I do bear love for Allah and his Messenger Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam ". Hearing this the Prophet of Allah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam stated "You will be with whom you love." Anas Ibn Maalik Radiallah anhu reports upon hearing this statement the hearts of the Sahabah melted and their eyes flowed relentlessly. He explains, ‘Since after our acceptance of Islam, we had never been happier then we had been on that day on which the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam stated "You will be with whom you love." The books of Ahaadith, on different occasions describe the clear love held by the Sahabah for Allah and his Messenger Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam .
Alas, if only we could compare to that.
Apparently, the great enigma of this day and age is we love everything other than Allah and His Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam. The non-believers have enchanted us through their devious tricks. Our hearts have hardened. We do not recognise the truth when in front of us! Contrary to the lives of the Sahabah our lives revolve around everything, but the teachings of the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam. Presently, a cancer has infected our youth.
This cancer is football!

Football ?

Football, over the years has expanded. Previously, it had been a harmless sport, in which twenty-two men kicked an inflated piece of leather, and presently it has become a monopoly in which the fan is completely brainwashed, conned and bewitched! Previously, a Muslim would relax by watching a match or two; presently, its an addiction. To make my point clear on how the football factory’s psychological process in brainwashing the fan takes place, read on. Throughout this year, a satellite broadcasting company has been displaying a billboard in which the slogan ‘Football no longer remains a game. Football is a religion!’ was advertised. Whose religion? Mine? Yours? Negative!
Allah states in the Quran:
‘I have chosen for you Islam, as a religion.’

(Al-Maidah 3:5)

Many may claim that this slogan holds no real relevance. My brothers understand; think; psychologically we are being destroyed!
In another incident a so called philosopher, was foolishly made to look like one of the greatest philosophers ever when he made the statement, ‘Football is life!’ He logically, by means of two phrases, deduced ‘Football is a game!’ Now even if we (for the sake of argument) accept this, he then goes on to say, ‘Life is a game!’ Blowing everything out of all proportions!
Islam on the other hand teaches that life is a grazing ground for the Hereafter; a test and a tribunal. By merging the first term (subject) and the second term (predicate) and omitting the syllogism (Had-e-ausat) he came to the conclusion (Major Term) that, ‘Football is life!’ Well, quite clearly this explains the mentality they have for life.
If you were to ask a typical (Muslim) football fan, "Name me your football team’s first eleven?" he would be able to name them with relative ease. On the contrary, if he was to be asked far more serious Islamic matters, such as, "How many compulsory acts are there in Salaah and what are the consequences if you fail to comply with them?" The response would be a muted silence. If you were to ask him, "How many children did the ProphetSalallahu Alaihi Wasalam have and how many wives he had etc." the answer again would be a muted silence. Apparently, these are the most primary and fundamental questions one can ask another. Our love for the Kuffar is manifest even over Islam, regarding these people who hold intimate friendship with the Kuffars, there are many Qur’anic ayaahs cautioning and warning. The Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam 's ahadeeth are also numerous. A Hadith which should really soften the heart, is:
Imam Bukhari (rahmatullahi alaihe) narrates on the authority of Hadhrat Abu HurairahRadiallah anhu
"That the Prophet of Allah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has stated; "I swear by He, in whose hands my life lies, that none of you are true believers until I am not more beloved to him than his parents, children and the whole mankind."

(Al Bukhari, Kitaab-ul-Imaan)

Many Qur’anic ayaahs explain this matter clearly. The Qur’an, at times is very stern. It explicitly explains the status of these groups of people in the following verses:
‘Oh Believers take not my enemies and your enemies as friends, showing affection to them whilst they have disbelieved in what ever truth that has come to you.’

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:1)

The Qur'aan further states:
‘And whosoever does so (i.e. makes friendship with the Kuffar), then indeed he has gone far astray from the straight path.’

(Al-Mumtahinah 60:1)

‘O you who believe, take not the Jews and the Christians as friends, they are but friends of one another. And if anyone amongst you takes them as friends, then surely he is one of them. Verily Allah does not guide those who are oppressors.’

(Al Ma’idah 5:51)

'The Jews and the Christians will never be pleased with you, until you do not accept their religion.’

(Al Baqarah 1:120)

Then in Surah Al-Mujadlah he states:
‘You (Mohammed Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam) will not find anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day making friendship with those who oppose Allah and his Messenger Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam, albeit they are their fathers or their sons or their kinder.’

(Al-Mujadalah 59:22)

In another verse, the very same message is further reinforced:
‘Let not the Believers take the Disbelievers as friends instead of the Believers, and whosoever does so will never be helped by Allah unless indeed you fear a danger from them.’

(Ale-Imran 3:28)

My brothers, as I previously mentioned, football hardly remains the harmless sport, which we were so used to accepting. To prove my point, I will relate two heart-rending incidents, which have left me totally shocked.

The First Incident

A couple of years back Southampton F.C were caught dog fighting in the relegation zone. One of their greatest players ever, secured their Premiership life by playing extremely brilliant at decisive times. Whenever Matt Le Tissier would go forward to take a corner, the spectators upon his arrival would bow and prostrate before him. Not once, nor twice, but numerously. Blatant Shirk (ascribing partners with Allah) and guess who watches this type of filth? Our children and their parents watch with them! As I previously mentioned, it no longer remains harmless.

The Second Incident
This is more of a shocking incident than the previous one. Upon recognizing the dangerous effects this has had, if a Muslim were to cry over this incident, it would be normal for him to do so.
I was walking down a street and I spotted a couple of Muslim children playing football in a far corner. I smiled to myself remembering the old times in which I used to play on this very same place. A child then played an extremely brilliant defense splitting ball through the middle, which was equally breathtakingly controlled and finished in one movement. I gasped at the skill and finish. Hence, when the child started to celebrate I was completely heart-broken. He was pointing to himself and calling himself ‘God’, imitating a certain footballer. Again blatant Shirk and again our children’s minds are being polluted. Many may argue the fact that he is only a child and does not understand, if he was to understand it wouldn’t happen. I totally accept this. But one thing leads to another. There is no smoke without fire. Definitely, this is not an individual case. Hundreds of children are probably caught up in the very same mess.
My brothers, the Prophet of Allah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam wept constantly in his prayers for the removal of this filth (Shirk) from the world. Today Islam’s children, and Islam’s future are being ruined and spoiled. Regarding what the Qur’an states about shirk is as follows:
"Verily Allah Ta’ala does not forgive that associates are made with Him and forgives whomsoever He wishes other than that."

(An-Nisaa’ 4:112)

Injunction Regarding Football Shirts

The matter regarding football shirts (tops) is simple. Firstly, the Muslims’ imitation of the kuffar is impermissible. Again the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has given grave warnings regarding it.
Imaam Abu Daud (rahmatullahi alaihe) narrates on the authority of Ibn Umar Radiallah anhu:
"that the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has stated, "Whosoever emulates a group of people, he is of them."

(Abu Daud, Kitabul Libas)

Muslims imitating the Kuffar and leaving the sunnah and ways which our Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has so mercifully taught us should be means of concern for all. Hence, there are two points that I would like to raise and make clear.
a) Wearing football shirts which advertise breweries
b) Wearing red football shirts
c) These injunctions, regarding wearing football shirts in which advertisements of breweries are made are totally im-permissible in Islam. Firstly, on the basis of squandering wealth. The cost of each top is nearly #45.00 and the Qur’an is clearly against the wearing of such clothing.
It is mentioned in the Qur’an:
"Verily the spendthrifts are brothers of the shataan and shaytaan was ungrateful to his Lord."

(Al Isra’ 17:27)

Secondly, by wearing such shirts one would be advertising and promoting a sin. Which, in effect, encourage others to consume intoxicants.
Regarding this the Qur’aan states:
"Do not help one another to commit sin and transgression."

(Al-Ma’idah 5:2)

However, greater and graver prohibition has been made clear in a hadith in which the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has cursed ten, who deal with intoxicants.
Imaam Tirmizi (rahmatullahi alaihe) narrates on the authority of Anas ibn Malik Radiallah anhu
"that the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has cursed ten people who deal with ‘khamr’ (intoxicants). One who crushes, one who is engaged in crushing it, one who drinks, one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, one who gives it to drink, one who sells it, one who devours its price, one who purchases and the one for whom it is purchased".
From this we can perceive that whosoever has any link or connection with the buying and selling of intoxicants has been cursed by the Prophet of Allah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam. We can also claim through the sternness of this hadith, the prohibition of advertising (of intoxicants).
The religious injunction concerning the wearing of red shirts is that many jurists declare it haraam and impermissible. However, the most dominant view amongst the jurists which is stated, in Durrul Mukhtar:
"To wear red clothing is undesirable (makrooh-e-tanzihi)."

(Durrul Mukhtar volume 5, page 249)

Fantasy Football

Another addiction, which has been brought out to fool the public, is fantasy football. By changing the appearance of something and brandishing it with a different name will not change its realities and facts.
"The definition of gambling is a dealing in which the chance profit and loss is ambiguous."

(Jawhar al-Fiqh vol 2 page 346)

In reality (whatever the cost) one is paying the enrolment fee, which then upon enrolment, would make him ambitious and hopeful to make a gain. If he were to win, he would remain happy otherwise…
In the Qur’aan, the harm and ill effects of gambling have been explained in many ayahs, which there remains no need to make explicit.

A Religious Injunction Regarding Football Given by a Particular Jurist

This is an extremely fine matter to comment on. Many jurists, such as Mufti-e-Azam of Pakistan, Moulana Rashid Ahmed Ludhyanwi have dealt with it at length. His point of view is as follows:
Firstly, he defines the words ‘physical exercise’ into two.
a) One which is apparently linked with martial/military exercise.
b) And one which has no apparent link.
Mufti Rashid Saheb places football in the latter category. He then goes on to state, "For football to be permissible, due to it being linked with the latter group of physical activities, there are many pre-requital conditions, which need to be studied.
Firstly, there are three conditions:
1. There should be no physical or financial loss.
2. The person who takes part in such activities, himself, should not be encountering any loss, nor those who are participating with him.
3. The aspect of futile entertainment should not be dominant.
For the former two conditions he puts forward two ahaadith from which he puts forward his deductions.
The Holy Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has stated:
"Every play from which pleasure is gained is baseless (impermissible) apart from the practicing of bows and the training of horses or playing with his wife. Verily, these are permissible."

(Tirmizi)

It has been narrated by Saeed ibn Jubair Radiallah anhu: "that a relation of Abdullah ibn Mughaffal Radiallah anhu was, once throwing stones. He prevented him by stating, "Verily, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has prohibited the throwing of stones and stated that verily you will not hunt prey nor cause harm to an enemy but you will either break a tooth or damage an eye." He states that the relation repeated his act, upon this he said to him, "Did I not inform you that the Prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam has prohibited this action? Then he stated, "I will never speak to you again."

(Muslim vol. 2 page 152)

From the above ahaadith Mufti Rashid deduces that in football there are:
1. Possibilities of physical loss and incidents are manifest to justify.
2. Financial losses are could become apparent i.e. breaking of windows, causing harm to building sites and homes.
3. Football’s financial, physical and religious harms are apparent (many have been quite clearly pointed out through this article).
4) The aspect of futile entertainment and baseless pleasures are dominant and manifest over the aspect of physical exercise.
He relates four points explaining this matter:
1. The aspect of physical activities and futile entertainment should never be dominant over physical exercise. Such is the case in football.
2. For mere physical exercise, others don’t gather to spectate in the same manner which is encountered in football.
3. Television viewing of football squanders hours upon hours of a person’s time, which is haram (Television viewing being haram as it is).
4. In physical exercises, no one goes over the appointed limit. Which so blatantly is the case in football. In football hours pass and the player is not aware of the time.
With the above points, Mufti Rashid clearly explains his opinion and his injunction he issues on the matter of football.

Conclusion

Throughout this booklet, I have mentioned the negative aspects, which would make football impermissible by bringing the view of a leading jurist. However, one should not be deceived and take an extreme role in the abolishing of football from our streets. Undoubtedly, watching football is haram i.e. through ahaadith it has been proven that to look at the satar (thighs) of a living or dead human is haram, which leaves us with no doubt that viewing television is also haram. Other aspects such as wasting time and spending innumerable hours playing it will again issue the very same verdict. Causing intentional harm to fellow footballers will also conclude with the same injunction.
A principle point in the science of jurisprudence should be taken into consideration. "Each and every thing that leads to haram is haram". From this we can conclude all the actions which have been forbidden by Shari’ah, if and when football leads to it, will also make football forbidden.
Mufti Rashid Ahmed Saheb, himself has left a loophole in his injunction by stating:

"The physical exercises which have no apparent link to martial/military, if these types of exercise are for the sole purpose and sake of keeping fit so that they are means of aid in religious and worldly matters are not in itself only permissible but also to an extent necessary. However, there are a number of pre-requitals which are as follows (These have been previously mentioned above in his verdict)"

(Ahsanul Fatawa page 259 vol. 8)

From this we can conclude that to take part in any physical activities such as football is clearly permissible and at times beneficial. However, there are certain rules and regulations which the Shari’ah lays down, if these restrictions are breached then Shari’ah will bring down a firm hand. On a different light if this is not the case then so be it.
I pray to the Almighty, make this article not only beneficial to me but also to the entire mankind. We invoke blessings on the greatest creation of the Almighty, the Holy Prophet Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasalam, may Allah be pleased with him, all his companions and followers till the Day of Judgement.

MashaAllah, this is a very well put together article. I personally don't take any interests on any sports that come on TV, radio. I will play with the kids and encourage them never to dive into it like the youngsters of today. Astagfirullah, footbal, cricket etc gets discussed on Masajids up and down the country like it is the deen. The kids, even elders.can name plenty of footballers but how many can same the Sahaba?Oh and by the way, all you football supporters, it is not allowed to see another man's thighs, yet you watch men running around in shorts.

There's an excellent lecture that was given by shaykh Muhammad saleem dhorat, called 'cricket, football awr musalman'. It's really worthwhile getting or downloading to either benefit oneself or benefit others.

Invaluable 90 Minutes.....

www.at-tazkiyah.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=art...

by Shaykh Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullāh

Shaykh Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullāh on one occasion spoke on the theme of valuing time. As part of the talk, Shaykh very beautifully explained how much loss is incurred through futile activities. He took the example of watching or listening to 90 minutes of football and questioned what benefit 90 minutes bring to a person. The fact is that we don't gain anything!

If we take into account alternative actions of virtue, we will very quickly realise the great loss. Let us look at a few alternatives Shaykh mentioned:

If you engage in reciting the Qur'ān for this length of time, you would on average recite 4 juz. Allāh ta'ālā grants 10 rewards for every letter recited. Imagine how many letters you would recite in 4 juz and multiply that by 10!

By reading 4 juz you could have earned yourself at least 400,520 rewards!!!

Recite 'Subhānallāh walhamdulillāh'. The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam said, "Subhānallāh walhamdulillāh fills the space between the skies and the earth." Think for a moment how much reward you would gain from 90 minutes of reciting this. It is possible to gain the reward which will fill the space between the skies and the Earth 4,410 times!!!

Recite 'Subhānallāhi walhamdulillāhi wa lāilāha illallāhu wallāhu akbar'. From a hādīth we learn that Jannah is a barren land and these glorifying words plant a tree for its reader in Jannah. During 90 minutes, you could prepare yourself a lovely forest of fruit trees. In fact you could have planted 1,260 trees in Jannah!!!

Recite Sūrah-Al-Ikhlās. In the hadīth it is mentioned that Sūrah Al-Ikhlās is equal to 1/3 of the Qur'ān. Hence, by reciting it 3 times you will earn the reward of reciting the full Qur'ān! Along with this, another hadīth explains that when a person recites Sūrah-Al-Ikhlās 10 times, Allāh ta'ālā builds a palace for him in Jannah. In 90 minutes you could have earned the reward of 270 Qur'āns and built yourself 81 palaces in Jannah!!!

Recite durūd, the shortest version is 'sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam'. In the hadīth it is stated that for every durūd a person sends upon the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam, Allāh ta'ālā forgives 10 sins, grants 10 rewards and elevates the person 10 stages. In 90 minutes you could have had 40,500 sins forgiven, 40,500 rewards granted and 40,500 stages elevated in Paradise!!!

So you thought it was just 90 minutes of harmless fun? Might be worth looking at the figures again and calculating how much loss you have incurred during every match.

No to mention the "cross" symbols on the football shirts.

We all know the hadith of how Prophet SAW reacted when he saw a Sahabi was wearing the cross (christian symbol)

Islam and Sports

A true Believer is primarily concerned about the commands of Allah Ta'ala and the Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). He regards the slightest violation as a serious sin. Sins are of two categories. One is the sin that is perpetrated in secrecy. While committing it in secrecy does not diminish its severity, worse than this is the sin that is committed openly and in public.

When a sin is committed openly and those not involved shirk in their duty of amr bil ma'roof and nahy anil munkar (enjoining the good and forbidding the evil), the perpetrators of that evil as well as those who maintained silence despite their ability to correct the evil are engulfed in the wrath of Allah Ta'ala.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said:

" Verily Allah Ta'ala will not punish all the people due to the actions of a specific group until a sin is committed in their midst. Thereafter, despite their ability to repel the evil they do nothing about it. In such a situation Allah Ta'ala will punish the open sinners as well as the general masses who maintain silence
" (Mishkaat).

In the light of the above Hadith let us consider the following aspects with regard to sports:

  • ATTIRE

Most sports are played in attire that does not conform to Shar'i requirements. The sporting attire is such that most of the time the thighs of the players are exposed. The satr (part of the body compulsory to conceal) for men is from the navel to the knee.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: " Do not look at the thighs of a living or dead man" (Mishkaat).

In the case of sports, this sin of exposing the satr is perpetrated in public. The spectators must be endowed with some super human abilities if they can manage to look at the player only from his waist upwards and not look at his exposed satr. While some commit this open sin together with thousands of others on the sports field, many people collectively commit this evil of looking at the satr of others, together with wives and daughters, by huddling around the T.V. Thus zina of the eyes is committed collectively and nobody even bats an eyelid. The situation becomes much more worse when people watch tennis. Often the players are shameless women attired in skimpy outfits. Shameless Muslims sit with their families and watch these women prancing around the court. By the time the match is over, they are spiritually drained and empty due to the zina of the eyes.

  • IMPEDIMENT

Another serious calamity of sports is the extent to which it becomes an impediment in the way of the obligatory ibadah. Even those who are normally regular with their salaah often miss it because they were too "enchanted" and "spellbound" by somebody kicking a piece of leather. Either the salaah is completely missed or the congregational salaah in the Musjid is deliberately omitted. People have missed taraweeh salaah in the sacred month of Ramadhaan and, Allah forbid, even fasts were missed due to sports. Recitation of the Qur'an or zikr cannot even be given a second thought if a match is on.

There are many other objectionable aspects in sports. The above two are serious enough to make any true Muslim give up his involvement in formal sports.
Other evils discussed in this issue make the matter even more severe. However, to understand the inherent evil in modern day sports, one will have to consider it with the light of Imaan that Allah Ta'ala has blessed us with. If we consider it as the kuffaar do, then there is nothing else to say except to pray: "O Allah! Have mercy on us and guide us."

    Sports Idols

From a purely materialistic point of view, there are many people who have greatly benefitted mankind in general. For instance, computers have made it tremendously easy to accomplish many tasks that previously required great effort and much time. However, ask the millions of computer users worldwide and perhaps a few will know who invented the computer. Similarly, hardly anyone knows who invented the microwave oven or the cellular phone. The same can be said for a hundred other items which people benefit from daily.

  • LEGEND

Yet when it comes to the utterly useless skills of sport, the one that can keep whacking a fast moving ball with a bat becomes a hero for millions the world over. Somebody who can dribble through a bunch of people and kick a ball between two posts becomes a legend. Young and old admire him, adore him and many even idolise him. This is easily discernible from many aspects in the admirers life.

  • AUTOGRAPH

Even Muslim youth will be seen wearing garments autographed by some sports star, or wearing the scarf with their team colours, with great pride. Children who will sometimes be seen carelesly handling the Qur'an-e-Kareem as if it was an ordinary book, will be seen attaching great value to a book or a bat which was personally autographed by their favourite player. Albums of kaafir teams will be treasured as prize possessions. Walls of rooms will be found pasted with photographs of teams and players. Ask many young boys (and many old men) to name the players of their team and they will rattle off twelve names as if they were reciting sura fatiha. They will even give you a bit of the history of each player. Dare anyone criticise their team or their star and they will defend their idol as if their own honour was sullied.

  • CONQUERED

Yet, ask these very Muslims, who know the details of entire teams at their finger tips, some aspects about the history of the greatest personality of all mankind, Sayyidina Rasulullah (sallallahu alalihi wasallam). Many will not know anything beyond a few simple facts they learnt in primary madrasah. Ask a few sports questions and see how the answers are immediately given. Ask the same people about how many sons did Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) have and what were their names? Ask them in which year did Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) conquer Makkatul Mukarramah? One will be surprised as to how many are ignorant of the answers to these questions, yet they know in which year a certain bunch of disbelievers conquered the world's soccer teams in the world cup. Indeed, it is a time to hang our heads in utter shame if we know more about kaafir sports stars than we know about Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).

When the situation has deteriorated to this level, we have to definitely stop in our tracks and totally abandon this evil that has invaded our lives. Stop. Take courage. Put a full stop to being duped by the glitter and glamour of this futility.

    Sports and Vice

Drinking, lewd behaviour and other vices are closely linked to modern-day sports, especially professional sports. Drunken fans are an extremely common sight. According to a newspaper report, on the night before the world cup started, fans in France packed every place "that sold alcohol" (Daily News - 10/06/98). What else can really be expected from the kuffaar hordes? However, many Muslims, by constant association with the drinking mobs at sporting venues have fallen into this vice. Players from Muslim countries have also disgraced themselves and embarassed Muslims in general with their totally un-Islamic conduct. Yet Muslims cheer the very people who have let Islam down.

Again, it is sporting events which streakers (people who dash around stark naked in public) choose to insult even basic human values. If at just one event one's child is exposed to such animal behaviour, the ill-effects will last a lifetime. Can a true Muslim ever risk such a situation?

Depraved sexual tendencies also seem to find a special home in sporting circles. More than fifty gay and lesbian tennis clubs in the U.S. have been listed in a posting to the internet. Many sports stars have themselves declared their sexual depravity. Youth who idolise these stars are at risk of following in their footsteps all the way.

When sports has degenerated to these despicable levels, the only honourable thing to do . . . is to have nothing to do with it.

    Insulting Islam

One's honour has no price. People would spend all they have to protect their honour and the honour of their families. The one who attempts to taint their honour will be repulsed in every possible manner. Alas, it is only the forlorn Deen of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) that receives negligible help when it is insulted. Sports in particular seems to be at the forefront of insulting Islam.

  • KALIMA KICKED

Not long ago, Nike Incorporated apologised in the face of severe protest for putting the name of Allah on sports shoes. First they put the name of Allah on a shoe so that it will be trampled and soiled. Then they conveniently found thekalima on the Saudi flag and printed it on footballs. The footballs were manufactured by A.G. Enterprises of India and were on sale in London. First the name of Allah was being trampled. Now thekalima is being kicked around - all in the name of sport. It is naive to think that these occurences are mere coincidences. Even before the shoe affair, Nike had once erected a billboard which depicted a basketball player. The picture was headlined with the words "They called him Allah." Again, all in the name of sport. Yet Muslims still feel proud to be associated with Nike and its products. They still find some "enjoyment" in the futile sports that is used as a ready tool to insult Islam.

  • WORLD CUP

The participation of Muslims in the world cup has led to further desecration of the Kalima. As a result of Saudi Arabia's participation, their flag has been regularly appearing in our local newspapers as well as newspapers all over the world. The flag depicts thekalima of Islam. Millions of these newspapers will be in the hands of non-Muslims. One can barely imagine the extent to which the Kalima will be dishonoured. It will be thrown around, trampled upon, become the wrapping for things unimaginable and a host of other such aspects. But, alas, participation in the world cup must go on inspite of the desecration of theKalima! Thus in the name of the world cup the Kalima is dishonoured, but Muslims are still glued to the world cup. Do we care for the honour of the Kalima and for the honour of Islam???

    Sportmania: Taking Stock

Dear sincere Muslim, Dear follower and true lover of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam):

While the sportmania has gripped the world, sit back briefly and ask yourself the following questions:

    1. Am I also overwhelmed by all the media hype about a bunch of people kicking a ball around? (If yes, it means the propaganda machine has found another victim.)

    2. Have I ever missed any salaah, or missed performing it with Jama'ah in the Musjid, due to sports? (If yes, then sports is your terrible enemy since it is taking you on the path of Allah Ta'ala's wrath!)

    3. Do I know more about kaafir sports stars than what I know about Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)? (If yes, ... no words can describe something so ghastly. Stop! For Allah's sake stop ... Stop and make amends, before your heart stops and it is too late.)

    4. Since most people have been caught up in this insane frenzy, will I also blindly follow the hordes irrespective of what effect it has on my Imaan? Or do I have the courage of my convictions to say "Enough is enough!?" (Answer that with the Imaan in your heart!)

Q. And A. for cricket in islam

Question

The Muslim community here in Panama in Central America is mainly from India; you should know that Indians love cricket. In recent months several "Muftis" from India have came here and they say that cricket is forbidden in Islam because of gambling. Here we have our local tournament but without any kind of gambling; all the clubs have parties but without any alcoholic drinks and we don't have any type of gambling and women are not allowed to go to cricket matches or clubs parties and activities. The muftis who came here, made this statement (that cricket is forbidden in Islam) because of mainly international matches include gambling and offenses to the women in those matches. I will like to receive and know your thoughts about this issue.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

The game (cricket) itself does not include any prohibitions of Sharia. Therefore, participating in it is permitted as long as it does not have within any forbidden matter.
On the other hand, it becomes forbidden if it includes any prohibition of Sharia such as gambling, using intoxicants, wasting time, neglecting prayers or other obligations, etc.
Allah knows best.
