Indian man walks over 8,000km to perform Hajj

www.arabnews.com/node/2324526/saudi-arabia

JEDDAH/RIYADH: An Indian man has fulfilled a lifelong dream to walk all the way from his hometown in Kerala to Makkah for Hajj — a distance of 8,640 kilometers.

Shihabudeen Sayid Alawi, also known as Shihab Chottur, crossed five countries — India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait — to reach Makkah in one year and 17 days.

He left Kerala on June 2, 2022, and reached Makkah on June 7.

“It was a Ramadan day when I made it to the Kuwaiti-Saudi borders at 5:17 a.m. I bent the knee and I touched the sands of Saudi Arabia,” Alawi told Arab News in an exclusive interview.

Alawi first traveled to Madinah. “I felt like my journey (was) accomplished once I reached the Prophet’s Mosque. I visited (the) Rawdah, and I was sure I would be able to reach Makkah and perform Hajj.”

HIGHLIGHTS
• Shihabudeen Sayid Alawi crossed five countries to reach Makkah: India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait.

• He left Kerala on June 2, 2022, and reached Makkah, a year later, on June 7, 2023.

• The minimalist traveler carried a hiking stick and a backpack equipped with essentials.

• Alawi has more than 4.9 million followers on Instagram, 1.5 million on YouTube, and a verified Facebook page.

Once Alawi reached Makkah, he forgot all the challenges and hardships he had endured during the year-long journey. He “prayed for hours” for those who offered him support, and who had asked for prayers in front of the Kaaba. “I have prayed for the entire Muslim Ummah.”

Speaking of his journey, Alawi said: “In India and Pakistan, people supported me and gathered around me. In Iran and Iraq no one recognized me, but once I crossed the Kuwaiti borders people who knew about the journey started contacting me, asking to see me and supporting me.”

“At every country I stopped by I received assistance from officials, police, military, and those who recognized me, invited me over to stay at their homes.”

"I used money from my savings for this trip, but I could hardly use that money as my Muslim brothers from all the countries I have crossed took good care of me all the time", Alawi told Arab News in an exclusive interview. (Photo/Social Media)
The 31-year-old father of three daughters said he took a year to prepare for the arduous journey. To ensure smooth access to all the countries he needed to cross, Alawi visited diplomatic missions in New Delhi to obtain visas.

“I had a legal visa in all countries. Iran gave me an entry visa, Pakistan gave me a transit visa, and Kuwait police also gave me clearance, and for Saudi Arabia, I received a multiple-entry visa. Authorities here gave me a warm welcome. I have got all facilities to perform Hajj through one of (the) Hajj service providers who offered me an A-category. This shows the great love that Saudi authorities deliver to all Hajj pilgrims. I am so grateful,” he said.

The minimalist traveler carried a hiking stick, and a backpack equipped with four items of clothing, pepper spray to protect himself from wild animals, an extra pair of shoes, utensils, official documents and some money for Hajj.

“I used branded shoes for walking, I used six pairs before I crossed into Pakistan because it was the monsoon in India. After that, I used only one pair till I reached Madinah.”

“I used money from my savings for this trip, but I could hardly use that money as my Muslim brothers from all the countries I have crossed took good care of me all the time,” he said.

During his solo walking trip, Alawi lost 18 kilograms. He said he only ate traditional food which he described as “good for (the) soul and body.”

To reach Makkah and Madinah was my dream, and to reach there by footsteps was my goal.

“No proteins or special food. If I got halal food, I ate it. I was utterly comfortable and mentally relaxed.”

While Alawi explored different cultures and cuisines along the route, he also had to brave nature’s various dangers.

“There were circumstances of fear often, mainly due to the presence of wild animals like tigers, bears and more. In Iran, I saw the footprints of some wild animals and I recorded what I saw with my phone camera. But only when I showed it to some people there, I realized it was footprints of a tiger. After that incident, fear started to develop inside my mind,” he said.

He added: “In Iran, it was a different experience as I had to walk across the entire Iran in snow solo, the weather condition was changing every now and then, and that was the main challenge.”

“I stayed once on a goat farm with shepherds. Those who invited me to their homes gave me food and shelter in Iran and Iraq knowing that I am a Muslim traveler.”

Alawi was motivated by his strong faith and trust in Allah. “To reach Makkah and Madinah was my dream, and to reach there by footsteps was my goal. I kept my goal always in front of my eyes and I worked hard for it and it came true.”

Alawi said he wants to be an example to others. “Many people were inspired to perform Hajj because of this journey. Hajj is a holy ritual, and I want to inspire others to perform Hajj no matter what.”

Alawi would often share snippets of his journey on social media, where he has more than 4.9 million followers on Instagram, 1.5 million on YouTube, and a verified Facebook page.

Heat-blocking coating experiment implemented in Jamarat area in Mina
June 19, 2023

The Saudi authorities are implementing a project to apply heat-blocking coating at the holy sites in Makkah

Saudi Gazette report

MAKKAH — The Saudi authorities are implementing a project to apply heat-blocking coating at the holy sites in Makkah. The General Authority for Roads (GAR), in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing, and a number of relevant authorities, have already implemented this experiment in the Jamarat stoning area with the aim of giving some respite for the pilgrims during the upcoming annual pilgrimage of Hajj that coincides with the extreme summer season.

This project was implemented on the basis of a research study experiment on cooling asphalt surfaces at the holy sites. The GAR, in partnership with the Ministry of Municipality, Rural Affairs and Housing, had experimented this technology several months ago in the Riyadh region. This experiment was carried out in view of the fact that roads absorb temperature during the daytime, while the road temperature sometimes reaches 70 degrees Celsius. The roads scientifically discharge this heat at night. This is known as a scientific phenomenon called the ‘heat island’ that leads to increased energy consumption and air pollution.

The research experiment was based on addressing the ‘heat island phenomenon’ by using cold pavements with homemade materials that have the ability to absorb smaller amounts of solar radiation. The degree of its surface temperature is lower than that of traditional pavements, and this material is suitable for roads surrounding residential areas.

This experiment aims to reduce the temperature in neighborhoods and residential areas, as well as to bring down the energy used to cool buildings and reduce the effects of climate change. This technology contributes to providing a more comfortable environment in waiting areas and areas where people congregate.

It is noteworthy that the Makkah Mayoralty had implemented in 2019 a cool project by using coating asphalt as a way to reduce heat at the holy sites. The project included the coating of the pedestrian road leading to the Jamarat complex. The coating was done over a total area of approximately 3,500 square meters to help reduce the road temperature and to serve the pilgrims.

The project, which was carried out in cooperation with the Japanese company Sumitomo Corporation, aimed to reduce the surface temperature of the walkway in the Shuaibin area. The project aimed to provide temperature reduction from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, where temperatures will be recorded every 10 seconds during the season through sensors placed under the asphalt.

The GAR is working on developing research and practical experiments that contribute to improving the experience of road users, and achieving the objectives of the road sector strategy, which aims to enhance the safety and sustainability of the road sector, and improving the quality of the road network and the experience of its users.

Pilgrims start ascending plains of Arafat, marking climax of Hajj
June 27, 2023

Saudi authorities have mobilized all their resources and facilities to make the movement of pilgrims from Mina to Arafat a great success since this morning.

Saudi Gazette report

ARAFAT — Chanting “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik (O God, here I am answering Your call)...,” around two million pilgrims started proceeding on Tuesday morning to Namirah Mosque as well as to their designated tents in Arafat, about 15 km east of Makkah, after spending a night of meditation and supplication in the Tent City of Mina.

Male pilgrims in seamless white clothes - resembling a white sea of humanity and women in their abayas-will start their ritual of standing at Arafat, the most important pillar of Hajj, this afternoon. More than 1.65 million foreign pilgrims have arrived to perform Hajj this year and they were joined by hundreds of thousands of domestic pilgrims.

After spending a whole day and night in Mina in prayers and meditation on the first day of Hajj (Yaum Al Tarwiyah) on Monday, they moved this morning to Arafat on board Mashair Train, buses and other vehicles. All roads to Arafat were packed with worshippers as helicopters buzzed overhead and volunteers handed out bottles of water and collected rubbish in plastic bags.

Saudi authorities have mobilized all their resources and facilities to make the movement of pilgrims from Mina to Arafat a great success since this morning. A large number of pilgrims reached Arafat on board the Mashair Train. The convoys of buses carrying the pilgrims headed to the vast plains of Arafat, and the security forces have been deployed along the roads and pedestrian paths to ensure the smooth flow and safety of pilgrims.

The chanting of talbiya reverberated all around as the pilgrims headed to Mount Arafat in an air of spirituality that marks the climax of their lifetime spiritual journey. Medical teams and volunteers are also accompanying the pilgrims giving them medical aid and water and helping the elderly pilgrims.

The pilgrims gathered at the 110,000-square-meter grand Namirah Mosque and its 8000-square-meter courtyards well before the start of the Arafat Day sermon. Eminent Saudi Islamic Scholar and Member of the Council of Senior Scholars Sheikh Youssef bin Muhammad bin Saeed will deliver the Arafat sermon at the Namirah Mosque. The sermon resembles the famous farewell sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he performed his only Hajj.

After the sermon, Sheikh Youssef will lead the prayers. Retracting the noble tradition of the Prophet (PBUH), he will perform noon (Dhuhr) and evening (Asr) prayers, shortened and joined together, with one adhan and two iqamas. Pilgrims will join the prayers at and around Namirah Mosque, and then started performing the Standing (wuqoof) at Arafat.

Wuqoof Arafat, one of the four pillars of Hajj, will begin after noon prayers. Pilgrims would engage in prayers and supplications until after sunset. They will seek forgiveness and pleasures of Allah. Muslims in most parts of the world are observing fasting on Tuesday in a sign of solidarity with the pilgrims. It is a great Sunnah for those who do not perform Hajj to observe fasting on Arafat Day.

June 27, 2023

MAKKAH — The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) revealed on Monday that the data consumption in Makkah and the holy sites had hit 4,601 terabytes or the equivalent of 1.89 million hours of 1080p videos.

In its latest statistics, the commission said that the average individual Internet data usage had reached 785MB daily, nearly three times exceeding the international average of data usage per person, which is 270MB.

The commission said that the average speed for mobile internet download and upload had reached 197.5MB per second and 27.5MB per second, respectively, which proves the ability of the Kingdom’s infrastructure to meet the ambitions of the pilgrims and facilitate their communications with their families while performing the Hajj rituals.

The statistics revealed that the pilgrims' most visited websites were YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook.

The CST highlighted the completion of the telecommunication systems to serve pilgrims performing this year's Hajj.

Hajj: Tent Shortage Hits Pilgrims In Mina

Nigerians participating in the 2023 hajj pilgrimage has expressed worry over lack of tents at Mina, a camping site pilgrims lodge befor..

A pilgrim who spoke with Daily Trust anonymously, said they were in dire situation as they were without any amenity while fending for themselves under the excruciating sun in the city.

“It was surprising when we came to Mina on Monday to learn that there was no tent for us. The sun was intense and at first, we looked for clothes to cover our head but when the inconvenience got out of hand, we had to take cover under a bridge.”

While stating that the situation did not only affect Nigerian pilgrims as those from other African countries were with them, the person said she was a state of confusion on how to complete the long walk to Arafat on Tuesday.

“Coming here without access to a roof to cover our heads, water and other necessity is wrong. What we were told form the tour operator was that welfare here is in the hands of the Saudi Authorities, even food we are yet to be given.”

While confirming the incident, a Civil Society Organisation, Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), noted that thousands of pilgrims were stranded in the location.

In a statement, it attributed the situation to two major issues and lapses.

“Firstly, the Muassasa, the Saudi company tasked with the welfare of non-Arab Africans, allocated the same number of tents to Nigerian pilgrims this year as they did last year. However, while the Nigerian contingent to Hajj 2022 was about 45,000, Saudi Authorities allocated 95,000 slots this year. It therefore, makes no sense that the same spaces are allocated for the two contingents.”

“Secondly, the Saudi based security personnel deployed to man the tents in the area allocated to Nigerian pilgrims opened the entrances much earlier than the arrival of real pilgrims and the fake ones, mostly made up of illegal immigrants from Nigeria, popularly called “Tukari”, took over the spaces.”

It stated that the fake pilgrims went as far as producing fake wrist bands and trackers to hoodwink the security personnel.

But reacting to the tent shortage at Mina, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) said it is fully aware of the situation and promised to address it promptly and transparently.

In a statement by its Deputy Director of Information, Mousa Ubandawaki, the agency said the commission initially planned for 95,000 slots but the tents given by Saudi Arabia was not enough.

“As of 7:30am today, all states had completed their first phase of the movement to Mina except Kano, Kaduna, Niger, Borno, some tour operators and the South Eastern States only for the pilgrims to be met with shortage of tent spaces.”

“This is owing to insufficient planning by the Mu’assasah, there was a downturn in tent space deliveries. This unforeseen situation has been compounded by some pilgrims occupying multiple slots that could have been utilized by others, thereby exacerbating the shortage.”

“We would like to assure all pilgrims that we are fully committed to resolving this situation swiftly and effectively. Our teams are working round the clock to provide the necessary support and additional resources to ensure the comfort and security of every Nigerian to alleviate our pilgrims’ inconveniences.”

He further apologized to the pilgrims for the inconvenience caused and asked for their patience and understanding.

Saudi Arabia begins issuing e-visas for Umrah

Umrah pilgrims will start arriving in the Kingdom by July 19.

JEDDAH — The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has started issuing electronic visas for Umrah, as part of its efforts to enable more Muslims to come to the Kingdom to perform the Umrah pilgrimage and facilitate its procedures for them. This comes along with raising the quality of Umrah services to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The ministry stated that people who seek electronic visas can submit applications at the Nusuk platform: www.nusuk.sa/ar/about, so they can start arriving in the Kingdom by July 19.

The Nusuk platform facilitates the arrival procedures for Muslims worldwide to visit Makkah and Madinah, provides housing choices, residence and transportation services, in addition to easy access to a package of enrichment information and interactive maps in several languages.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah previously announced, in cooperation with the concerned authorities, that holders of tourist visas from the Gulf Cooperation Council of Arab states and holders of Schengen visa can book Umrah appointments via the Nusk application.

The Hajj and Umrah Ministry also facilitates procedures for holders of different types of visas.

Facilities provided by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to the Umrah performers are a part of new legislation that is recently adopted and include reducing the insurance fees for Umrah performers by 63% while maintaining the sustainability of health services for them, issuing the Umrah visa in less than 24 hours, and extending the Umrah visa from 30 days to 90 days, with no health requirements.

The updated procedures of Umrah also permit women to perform the Umrah without a male guardian (mahram). The new rules also allow Umrah performers to visit the unique sites of the Kingdom to learn about the country's cultural diversity and enrich their religious and cultural experiences. — SPA
