MAKKAH: Makkah municipality has started implementing a major project to give two famous cemeteries — Mualla and Al-Sharaie — a facelift.
The municipality awarded the project to refurbish and construct new walls around the cemeteries to a Saudi company, which started work Thursday. The project is estimated to cost SR5.63 million, Al-Watan Arabic daily reported Friday.
Abdullah Aqeel, director of the department for furnishing at the municipality, said that the two cemeteries are being refurbished in a way in order to make them major landmarks in the holy city. “Demolition works of old walls of Mualla Cemetery, which is popularly known as Jannatul Mualla, are under way. A strong new wall similar to that of the Baqie Cemetery in Madinah would be constructed around Mualla, which is close to the northern courtyard of the Grand Mosque,” he said.
According to Aqeel, cemeteries of Mualla and Al-Sharaie would get new walls surrounding them on all four directions. “The walls would have the hallmark of the Islamic architectural design. Visitors of graves will be prevented from committing any violations of the Islamic Shariah regulations,” he said.

LAHORE, Jan 23: The Saudi Arabian Haj ministry’s Agency for Umrah Services has chalked out a 34-point strategy for the Umrah season this year.
The plan would formally be launched on the first of Rabiul Awwal (Jan 25) and comprise a package focusing on upgrading the standard of services, the religious affairs ministry announced on Monday.
The services would include reception of Umrah pilgrims at the entry points, specified seaports and airports, their transportation, accommodation and departure, the ministry added.
The Saudi agency has stressed that pilgrims should not be kept waiting in buses for more than 30 minutes while warning them not to squat or sleep at airport lounges or on the floor of hotels and residential buildings allocated to accommodate them.
Only pilgrims having valid (confirmed) return tickets would be allowed to go for Umrah this year, it said.
The Saudi Arabian government has taken the step to avoid rush of pilgrims at its airports at the commencement of Umrah season from Jan 24.
A record 4.7 million pilgrims will perform Umrah this year from all over the world, said the announcement.
