New app helps pilgrims count tawaf rounds

file-01-1435780901546661900.jpg

JEDDAH: The Grand Mosque is now providing pilgrims with a mobile phone app that can keep track of their rounds during the tawaf or circumambulation of the Kaaba.

The app is available through the Google Play Store and can be downloaded and connected to the mosque’s system. It issues an alert when the pilgrim completes the seventh and last round.

Bandar Al-Khazeem, director of the information technology center of the Grand Mosque, said the app has been developed with Umm Al-Qura University’s technical innovation center, a local publication reported on Wednesday.
“The tawaf application helps you track the number of completed rounds and informs you when your tawaf is complete. The application uses a mix of sensors in your smartphone such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and motion sensors to determine your location within the Haram,” according to information provided on the app store by the developers.
They said that they are using Bluetooth because testing is currently under way on Bluetooth Low Energy technology that is much better than GPS to preserve battery life.

Meanwhile, Al-Khazeem said that the center also provides free Wi-Fi in the courtyards of the Grand Mosque to help connect people and those working on the premises. There are also services for iftar and itikaaf. All the information is available in Arabic, English, French, Turkish, Urdu and Farsi.

According to Maj. Gen. Khaled Qarar Al-Harbi, head of the special emergency forces, the number of pilgrims is expected to rise by 80 percent during the second quarter of the month, and more in the final 10 days. Plans are in place to deal with this increase, he said.

Small Fire in the Haram

A small fire broke out on the roof of the Grand Mosque on Monday morning, causing minor injuries to five people, including members of the Civil Defense, one security officer and three workers.

The fire broke out at about 2 a.m. and covered an area of 45 square meters on the roof of the Masa’a, where construction is currently taking place. Members of the Civil Defense and Grand Mosque’s security and safety teams brought the blaze under control with fire extinguishers.

Initial investigations determined that the previous day iron beams, covered in plastic to protect workers, were placed on a pack of cables linked to cameras. This had placed a strain on the cables and resulted in the short circuit, which had burned the plastic.

Lt. Col. Saeed bin Sarhan, spokesman of the Civil Defense in Makkah, said the fire broke out in an area under construction, away from worshippers and pilgrims.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defense in Makkah evacuated 23 pilgrims from a hotel in Aljumaizah neighborhood after a fire broke out, caused by a short circuit of a plasma television on the sixth floor.
The Civil Defense extinguished the fire and the pilgrims were able to return to their rooms.

Grand Mosque cleaned in less than an hour

Salman Al-Silmy
Okaz/Saudi Gazette

MAKKAH — It takes just 55 minutes to clean the entire Grand Mosque complex, according to officials in charge of the mosque cleaning.

During the holy month of Ramadan, the entire mosque in washed right after the Maghrib prayer to make it clean and sanitary for pilgrims and visitors to pray, said a source in the cleaning department.

The mosque has built-up area of 388,375 sq. meters, in addition to the 17,540 sq. meter mataf (circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba).

"It takes only 20 minutes to clean and wash the mataf. This means a sq. meter area is washed in less than 13 seconds despite the crowdedness of the area,” said the source.

The source said only a sparing amount of water is used in the cleaning process.

“The cleaners only use 400 liters of water for every 5,000 sq. meters. This means a single liter of water washes 12.5 sq. meters. They also collect an average of 98 tons of waste on a daily basis during Ramadan,” said the source.

The source also said the cleaners dispose of 60 percent of the waste within 45 minutes — at the rate of a ton of waste each minute — before the Isha prayer, a stupendous task considering the condensed crowds in the area.

“The Grand Mosque uses the latest and most advanced technologies when cleaning it. The cleaners quickly move around with vacuums with strong suction power, hoses with powerful propellers and brooms that can clean every nook and cranny,” said the source.

The source said the cleaners depend more on floor cleaning vehicles than brooms as brooms can drag dirt and waste along with it to other areas.

“The Grand Mosque designed a special floor cleaning vehicle for its needs, which is also used in the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The vehicle gathers up to 245 liters of waste and it does not take up a lot of space. It is also less time-consuming, easy to operate and more hygienic,” said the source.

Monitoring to protect kiswa from damage

Monitoring to protect kiswa from damage
Pilgrims pluck threads from the kiswa in this file photo. They assume that the threads will be a blessing for them.

MAKKAH — Eight employees work day and night inside the Grand Mosque to keep a close eye on the kiswa (the embroidered black cloth that adorns the Holy Kaaba) to make sure that visitors don’t damage it, according to an official.

“We have pilgrims coming from various parts of the wide Islamic World with varying religious backgrounds. We have faced instances of pilgrims behaving in inappropriate conducts and damaging the kiswa such as chewing its weaves for blessings,” said kiswa factory head Muhammad Bajoudah.

He said the cover is cleaned on a weekly basis. “We also clean the door of the Kaaba and its handles,” said Bajoudah.

He also said the factory raises awareness of the importance of the kiswa and its history. Bajoudah said the facility never stops working.

The Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has said that the factory manufacturing kiswa is operating 24/7 throughout the year.

Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, chief of the presidency, said the kiswa factory is run by tradition. “Kneading the black cloth with golden embroidery is not a job one can learn in an internship.

Kiswa factory is run by people growing up beside the Kaaba and watching the process from the factory’s workshop to the annual changing of the kiswa,” said Al-Sudais.

He added that the presidency has a special unit dedicated to the kiswa of the Kaaba to follow up with the agenda and progress of the factory.

Bajoudah said the factory has a national and international presence showcasing the wonders of the kiswa.

“We participate in local festivities such as Al-Janadriyah and also international exhibitions and museums in Europe and other parts of the world.

In the past, we used to manufacture the kiswa in several different factories in different areas of the world. But today it is a 100 percent made-in-Saudi-Arabia,” said Bajoudah.

The kiswa is 14 meters (42 feet) high, to match the height of the Kaaba, and 47 meters (141 feet) wide, enough to cover the four sides of Islam’s holiest site, which are not identical in dimension.

Its upper half is decorated with a 95-cm (three-foot) wide strip featuring verses from the Holy Qur’an, inscribed in gold plated silver thread, which weighs 120 kg.

The kiswa is made of five pieces. The fifth piece is the curtain of its door. Nearly 650 kg of natural silk is required to make the kiswa.

The silk is imported, but the kiswa is designed and tailored by more than 200 Saudi employees at the special factory.

Every year, pieces of the old kiswa are presented as gifts to Muslim countries and senior Muslim personalities.

JEDDAH — The ongoing Ramadan festival called “Ramdanana Kida”(Our Ramadan Was Like This) at the historic Balad district of Jeddah has set a new Guinness world record for the longest connected iftar table.

Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims to break their fast after sunset during Ramadan. Jeddah’s longest iftar table measured 1.508 meters in length comprising 640 tables.

The table arranged near Al-Jaffali Mosque brought together thousands of people from all over Jeddah to break their fast with the attendance of Saudi officials and representatives from the Guinness Book of Records.

The event was organized by Afia in coordination with the governorate of Jeddah, Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the organizing committee of “Ramdanana Kida” festival.

The official adjudicators announced the new record which beats the previous one in Finland last year where 1.286-meter-long table was arranged by Ölvin, Bistro Cantor and C&D Fastfood in Loviisa.

The “Ramdanana Kida” festival includes commercial, social, cultural, religious, sporting, environmental and heritage activities.

To represent the identity of the Hijazis, who love hard work and helping out people, the festival opened the way for more than 150 young Hijazis to get involved.

They welcome the visitors and guide them in Hijazi style, and also contribute to the maintenance of security and regulating traffic.

On Tuesday, Prince Mishal Bin Majed, governor of Jeddah and the chairman of the high committee of “Ramadanana Kida,” toured the facilities and events of the festival.

He was briefed on the overall activities of the festival, which aims to revive the Hijazi heritage.

He advised the organizers to highlight this important traditional event with the aim of promoting the Kingdom as a hub of culture, literature and Arab and Islamic history that preserves its heritage and artistic treasures.
