Delayed transmission of the Qur'an channel threatens
to cut off the broadcast of the Haram

Beginning of Umrah Season

Umrah applications start to be receive on 1st Safar/23 Nov.

Umrah applicants’ biometrics before travel

Visa applicants for Umrah will soon have to record their biometrics before traveling to the Kingdom.

Under the new rule, which comes as part of efforts to streamline the visa process and reduce waiting time at entry points, biometrics will be recorded at select agencies through registration centers in foreign countries.

The new system has been a subject of contention among Umrah tour operators in Pakistan, Egypt and Jordan, but has yet to be introduced in India, Bangladesh and other countries with a large number of Umrah applicants.

Tour operators have opposed the biometric system, saying it would delay Umrah visas and increase costs for applicants who live in remote areas since they would have to travel to larger cities before getting their permits.

The problem is particularly pressing in Pakistan, which sends nearly 700,00 Umrah pilgrims to the Kingdom every year.

Scores of local tour operators working under the umbrella of the Travel Agents Association of Pakistan have opposed the new system.

The Jordan Society of Tourism and Travel Agents, meanwhile, has suspended Umrah visas for the current season in protest against the new measure.

Its President Shaher Hamdan said that the society would continue with this suspension until biometric data collection procedures are facilitated and amended for pilgrims.

Tour operators in Egypt have firmly opposed the measure, saying it would be a huge burden on pilgrims living in remote areas.

“We don’t know the exact details yet, but we know that processing costs will double and that pilgrims will have to approach a specific agency in Cairo and Alexandria to submit visa application forms,” Hisham H. Ali, an Egyptian expat from Jeddah, told Arab News.

Egyptian tour operators and officials from the country’s tourism ministry held a meeting with Saudi diplomats on Wednesday and requested them to postpone biometric registration until adequate arrangements were made, according to one report.

Operators in India and Bangladesh have not received word of the measures thus far, but will only process visas for Umrah pilgrims from December.

“We have not received any information about biometric requirements,” Adeeb Mohammed, managing director of Links travel, an agency that processes thousands of Umrah applications in Hyderabad every year, told Arab News.

Sources at travel agencies in Dhaka also echoed similar views.

Arab News tried to get comments from Hatim Kadi, undersecretary at the Haj Ministry, to no avail.

Smart carts for special needs and elderly pilgrims

to perform Tawaf and Saee with ease

Photo by Kooheji - November 2014
Monday, 24 November 2014 - 2 Safar 1436

MAKKAH — A study is under way to use smart golf carts to help special needs people and the elderly perform the circumambulation of the Kaaba and Saee (running or walking seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwa) with ease.

An instruction to this effect was issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Dr. Faisal Wafa, chairman of the technical committee for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Expansion Project of the Grand Mosque, told Okaz on Sunday.

He said the smart golf carts will help 6,000 pilgrims perform Umrah in an hour. These carts will pick special needs, elderly and physically challenged pilgrims from various points in the Grand Mosque and help them perform Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Saee.

As regards the temporary circular bridge being used at present by wheelchair-bound pilgrims for Tawaf, Wafa said the matter will be referred to the higher authorities whether to keep the bridge or remove it after the mataf expansion project is completed.

The first two phases of the King Abdullah Project for the expansion of the mataf (circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba) have been completed within the stipulated period of time.

The expanded facility can accommodate 70 percent more pilgrims. The first phase of the mataf expansion in the eastern direction with all its floors would be opened for worshippers once prayer mats and the shelves for keeping the Holy Qur’an are arranged and the Zamzam supply facility is organized.

Trial run of Haramain Railway next year

Monday 24 November 2014

Experimental operation of the 480-km Haramain Railway that links the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah will take place in the beginning of next year, said Transport Minister Jabara Al-Seraisry.

He said the first train from a total of 35 trains for the railway would arrive in the Kingdom by the end of this year. “We need sometime to fix the train’s parts and we’ll conduct an experimental operation.”

“We have completed 90 percent work on the main stations and we are studying prospects of establishing a new station near the Meeqat Mosque in Madinah for the benefit of pilgrims,” the minister said.

The 300 km/h speed train system will pass by Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh.

Al-Seraisry, who inspected the railway station in Madinah, urged contractors to establish proper rainwater drainage systems for the stations.

He said work on the two stations in Makkah and Madinah was affected by Umrah and Haj seasons. “Engineers wanted to establish the stations 1.2 meters above the ground level to protect them from flashfloods.”

The Madinah station located in the Knowledge Economic City covers an area of 172,000 square meters and include passenger lounges, six platforms for trains, arrival and departure halls, a helipad, and a mosque and a parking area for 1,000 vehicles.

Mohammed bin Khaled Al-Suwaiket, president of Saudi Railway Organization, said the project would be able to make 90 percent of returns within 12 years. He estimated the project’s total cost at SR3 billion.

He said the railway would operate seven trains between Jeddah and Makkah, two between Makkah and Madinah, and four between Makkah and Rabigh. “Every train is expected to carry nearly 20,000 passengers every hour.”

- Top floor (roof) for next year’s Haj

25 November 2014
Tuesday 25 November 2014

The newly renovated and expanded mataf, the circumambulation area around the Kaaba, will be open on the ground and first floors in Ramadan, and on the top floor for next year’s Haj, a senior official has said.

Faisal Fuad Wafa, chairman of the technical committee overseeing the Grand Mosque expansion, made the announcement at a meeting of the committee. The additional expansion of these floors would also be completed, he said.

The participants at the meeting discussed issues related to the third phase of the project that would help pilgrims perform their rituals easily. The project is expected to double the capacity of the mataf area.

Haramain Railway project work in full swing

Makkah Haramain station
Wednesday, 26 November 2014

Work is in full swing on the high-speed Haramain Railway project that will link the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and Rabigh. The railway has a plan to transport more than 6.2 billion passengers within 12 years. There will be 35 trains and a special train for the elderly people.

A trial run of the train will take place early next year.

The Haramain Railway will run seven trains between Makkah and Jeddah in one hour.

At least 86 percent of the construction work of Makkah railway station in Rusaifah has been completed at a cost of over SR3 billion.

The 450 km railway, with a speed of 300 km per hour, is estimated to cost SR37.5 billion.

The project is over two years late and was originally planned to open in 2012 after construction started in March 2009. As of August 2014, the Madinah-Rabigh section is scheduled for services by the end of 2015, suggesting a phased opening.

Bangladesh ex-minister surrenders
after Haj criticism

Abdul Latif Siddique sent to prison

Wednesday, 26 November 2014

DHAKA — An influential Bangladesh ex-minister surrendered to police and was jailed on Tuesday after thousands of Muslims staged nationwide protests calling for his arrest and prosecution over remarks criticizing the annual Haj pilgrimage.

Abdul Latif Siddique’s surrender came a day after protesters gave an ultimatum to detain him after he returned home on Sunday following a long stay in India and the United States where he called the Muslim ritual Haj a “waste” of manpower.

The accused “surrendered to police” early Tuesday afternoon, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Masudur Rahman said.

Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court then “sent him to jail as he did not seek bail,” public prosecutor Abdullah Abu said.

Wild protests erupted at the court as hundreds of people, including lawyers, hurled abuse at the ex-minister, television footage showed.

Some demonstrators waved sandals and shoes at him — regarded as a serious gesture of disrespect in the Muslim world.

Siddique’s remarks triggered widespread protests across the Muslim-majority nation in September, with thousands demanding his dismissal from the Cabinet of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and his prosecution for “hurting their feelings.” Some groups have even demanded his execution.

Hasina fired Siddique from the post of telecommunications minister while he was still in the United States.

Local courts issued more than a dozen arrest warrants against him for “wounding religious sentiments” of Muslims.

Siddique spoke out against the Haj pilgrimage, and a non-political Islamic group, the Tablig Jamaat, at a rally in New York.

Television footage showed Siddique telling Bangladeshi expatriates in New York that, “I am dead against the Haj and the Tablig Jamaat.”

“Two million people have gone to perform Haj. Haj is a waste of manpower. Those who perform Haj do not have any productivity,” he said in the televised proceedings.

“They (Haj pilgrims) deduct from the economy, spend a lot of money abroad,” he said.

After his speeches were shown on television, religious group Hefajat-e-Islam declared him “an apostate.”

Siddique has refused to apologize for his comments on the Haj — a pilgrimage he performed in 1998, according to Bangladeshi dailies.

International Symposium
on Printing Holy Quran in Madinah

3-5 Safar 1436 / 25-27 November 2014

_________________________________________

Prince Faisal opens global Qur’an forum

Wednesday 26 November 2014

Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman inaugurated an international seminar, entitled “The Printing and Publication of the Holy Qur’an: Realities and Objectives,” in Madinah on Tuesday.

The forum was organized by the King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex at Le Meridien Hotel in the holy city and was conducted under the aegis of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.

The prince also cut a tape to open an exhibition on the sidelines of the forum and toured the expo, which showcased various publications of the Holy Qur’an, its manuscripts and other printed literature at the complex.

Islamic Affairs Minister Saleh Al-Asheikh and other guests accompanied the prince. The prince was also presented with a new exclusive copy of the Holy Qur’an and the first edition of the holy book in braille.

Al-Asheikh briefly outlined how the Qur’an was first compiled and sent to major Muslim powerhouses during the time of the third caliph, Uthman bin Affan.

“Scribes went to great lengths to copy the verses exquisitely and with precision throughout the centuries,” he said.

“Even after the invention of printing machines, hand-written copies of the Qur’an remained the versions of choice since scholars feared errors at printing houses and preferred to stick to traditional artistic techniques.”

The King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex was soon to be established, nevertheless, and copies printed within the establishment were scrutinized using advanced technological methods.

“More than 230 million copies of the holy book have been printed at the complex,” he said.

“Other publications printed at the complex include studies and literature on the holy book, including commentaries and meanings in various languages. The Qur’an has been translated into 63 languages, while close to 300 million copies of Qur’an-related literature have been printed by the complex.”

“The seminar comes as a affirmation to all those who are interested in such mechanisms since printing the Qur’an is no easy task,” Al-Asheikh said. The minister also commended the keenness of King Abdullah, Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, and Deputy Crown Prince Muqrin to support the printing complex.

Muhammad Al-Oufi, secretary-general of the complex, also spoke on the occasion.

He said the goals of the forum included laying down codes of reference and formulating an optimum method for printing and proofing the holy book, in addition to facilitating a meeting between experts on the Qur’an.

Ahmed Shukri of the University of Jordan lauded the efforts made by the country in printing, publishing and distributing flawless and free copies of the Qur’an to Muslims around the globe.
