Reduced pilgrim quota to stay until next year

.

Wednesday 16 July 2014

Hatem Al-Qadi, spokesman for the Ministry of Haj said his ministry has decided to keep in place the reduction in the numbers of domestic and international pilgrims by 50 percent and 20 percent respectively.

He explained that the decision will continue to take effect owing to the huge expansion projects still under way in the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

“The decision was issued during the last meeting of the Ministry of Haj and aims to maintain the health and safety of pilgrims,” said Al-Qadi, adding that the ministry uses the data available to serve visitors and worshippers and make their journey enjoyable and memorable.

Al-Qadi confirmed that the number of pilgrims this year will be the same as in the last Haj season. “Last year, there were a total of 1,980, 249 pilgrims of which 1,379, 531 were from outside the Kingdom and 600,718 were domestic pilgrims,” he said.

He stressed that Saudi citizens and residents should adhere to the ministry’s decision of performing Haj once in five years.

He noted that the new expansions of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque are the largest in the history of the city. Such expansions will result in accommodating 2.2 million worshippers in the Grand Mosque, and will double the current capacity of the Mataf from 48 thousand worshippers an hour to more than 105 thousand.

“The expansions will also increase the capacity of the courtyards surrounding the Grand Mosque, and lessen the urban congestions around the area to the north, the west and northeast,” said Al-Qadi. Senior officials at the Ministry of Haj highlighted the royal decision to reduce the numbers of pilgrims in view of the capacity of the Mataf area during the expansion works.

Eid likely on Monday 28 July

Wednesday, 16 July 2014

AL-AHSA – Eid Al-Fitr will probably fall on Monday (July 28), according to an Islamic astronomical organization in Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed Shawkat Oudah, chairman of the Islamic Crescent Observation Project, told Arabic daily Al-Madinah on Tuesday that most of the Islamic countries are likely to sight the Shawwal moon on Sunday (July 27).

He said the geocentric conjunction (birth of new moon) will happen before sunset and the moon will remain in the skies after sunset on that day in the majority of Arab countries.

Oudah said the new moon signaling the advent of Eid will not be seen by the naked eye or an optical aid.

Oudah said the first day of Eid will be on Monday for the people who use astronomical calculations and do not depend on visual sighting.

He said the Eid will be on Tuesday for the countries which depend mainly on visual sighting and strongly scrutinize the testimonies of those who claim to have sighted the moon.

Navigation app boon for Haj pilgrims from India

Wednesday 16 July 2014

A new state-of-the-art navigation system is being introduced to help Indian pilgrims to find their way to their places of accommodation in Makkah during Haj, Indian Consul General B. S. Mubarak told Arab News.

“Pilgrims will wear identification tags on their wrists that will be connected to the mobile phone devices of mission officials and volunteers,” he said.

The consulate is the first foreign mission in the Kingdom to come up with this innovative GPS app, which will be available for use by both Indian pilgrims and expats in the western region.

“Though we have many volunteers helping missing pilgrims find their way, most fail to effectively explain where they are, making it difficult for officials to find them. This new app will help us overcome logistical problems encountered during this busy season,” said the diplomat.

More than 136,000 pilgrims from India are expected to perform Haj this year.
“The new app will be available for download on the IOS and Android platforms of smartphones during Haj,” he said.

Indian pilgrims will be provided with Saudi SIM cards prior to boarding their flights to Jeddah and Madinah and will receive an app downloading message upon arrival.

The consulate recently launched a Facebook page in a bid to connect with the Indian community, enabling expats in both the Kingdom’s western and southern regions to interact with their local mission and engage with fellow Indian expats.

“Our new Facebook page is the perfect way for Indian expatriates to get more information about issues that matter and provide their input,” he said.
The website contains vital information about community welfare and procedures related to complaints and labor-related issues.

20,000 drivers needed for Haj service

Thursday, 17 July 2014

MAKKAH — The General Syndicate of Cars and Haj Transport Companies has started receiving applications to fill about 20,000 seasonal vacancies for car drivers and mechanics, Makkah daily reported.

The newspaper said the vacancies are offered to jobless Saudis and government employees who are below the fifth grade in the government’s salary scale.

The drivers are needed to drive buses with a capacity of 49 passengers inside the cities and from air, sea and land inlets to Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites.

The drivers will be paid a monthly salary of SR3,000 in addition to incentives and other fringe benefits.

A driver should be aged between 21 and 60 and possess a valid driving license for trucks and heavy vehicles.

The drivers will have to pass a medical examination and submit their applications through the website of the syndicate, its main offices in Makkah or any labor office anywhere in the Kingdom.

Applicants should also attach an experience certificate and a copy of their national ID.

SR4.5bn Makkah-Qassim highway gets green light

In this screenshot from Google map, the dashed line linking Buraidah, the capital of Qassim province, and the holy city of Makkah,
is just for illustration purposes. It’s not necessarily where the planned expressway would be built.

Thursday 17 July 2014

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has approved the allocation of SR4.5 billion to build an expressway between Qassim and Makkah with service facilities along the road.

Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar thanked Custodian of the Two House Mosques King Abdullah on behalf of the region’s people for the gesture, saying it reflects the king’s desire to enhance the welfare of citizens and residents in the country.

He said the new expressway would facilitate travel between the two regions, especially pilgrims traveling to Makkah to perform Haj and Umrah. “It will also strengthen the Kingdom’s road network.”

The new budget allocation comes less than a week after the king ordered the construction of another major highway linking the southern regions of Asir and Jazan at a cost of SR6 billion.

The two highways come under new road projects worth SR24 billion approved by King Abdullah to promote communication facilities in the Kingdom.

King Abdullah, meanwhile, ordered the Real Estate Development Fund to write off SR243 million owed by 1,158 citizens who have died.

“The fund has completed measures for the payment of their loans and lifted mortgages on their properties,” said Yousuf Al-Zoghaibi, director-general of the fund.

Late night prayers to start on Saturday

from 1 a.m. on Saturday 17 July
to mark the last 10 days of Ramadan

Wednesday 16 July 2014

Mosques across the Kingdom will conduct late night prayers (known as “qiyamul layl”) from 1 a.m. on Saturday to mark the last 10 days of Ramadan, during which these prayers will be held daily.

“The last 10 days of Ramadan are the most important since the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on one of these nights,” Mohammed Obaidullah, an imam at the Sheebani mosque in the Nasseriyah District, told Arab News on Tuesday.

Private establishments that have been contracted to maintain mosques throughout the Kingdom have geared up their staff to be on duty throughout the nights to ensure a smooth supply of power and water.

Extensive arrangements have been made at all the mosques to accommodate the additional number of worshippers during this period.

Mosques will be kept open for worshippers throughout the night during the last 10 days of the holy month in accordance with a directive issued by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance.

Some mosques will be illuminated to give off a festive vibe.

“The mosques are kept open for the public at nights for them to recite the Qur’an and conduct whatever prayers they need to offer inside the mosque premises.

According to the circular, imams have been instructed to keep places of worship tidy and to ensure adequate and uninterrupted supplies of power and water during the holy month to meet the requirements of the influx of Muslims coming post-Isha taraweeh prayers.

Improvised partitions for ladies have been built at mosques that do not have separate prayer halls for women.

A maintenance contractor who looks after more than 1,500 mosques in the capital told Arab News that his company has instructed his labor force to work in the mosques late into the night during this period. “These workers are expected to keep places of worship spick and span, ensure a smooth supply of water and power and illuminate the venues,” he said.

Around 10 laborers work in large mosques, while others are manned by two workers.

Some of the big mosques in the capital are built and maintained by members of the royal family. Some 5,000 mosques are maintained by a department devoted to mosques at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance headquartered in Riyadh.

EP residents find it more
difficult to travel for Umrah

Wednesday 16 July 2014

Eastern Province residents are having a tough time getting to Makkah during the holy month of Ramadan due to the high influx of pilgrims.

Some residents have resorted to booking flights via Bahrain, which costs less compared to the prices of domestic Saudi airlines, to perform Umrah.

The cost of traveling by bus to Makkah has also become more expensive after bus owners agreed among themselves to unify prices, forcing Umrah providers to pay more for permits.

“This has consequently forced Haj and Umrah offices to raise prices by 35 percent,” said Muhammad Faifi, the manager of a Haj and Umrah service provider in Dammam.

“Around five buses leave the Eastern Province daily to Makkah and another 20 buses make the journey on weekends. Bus owners are renting their buses to Haj and Umrah service providers for SR5,000 per trip, compared with SR3,000 they charged last year during Ramadan.”

Saeed Al-Muhammadi, marketing director of a Haj and Umrah service office, said, “There are more than 70 licensed offices located in the Eastern Province spanning across Dammam, Alkhobar, Dhahran and Jubail.”

“Most pilgrim who prefer to travel to Makkah by bus are Arab or Asian nationals, while Saudi families choose to travel by plane,” he said.

“More than 30 Haj and Umrah office representative in Dammam and Alkhobar recently met to discuss bus fares to Makkah. They signed an agreement, which stipulated that individuals would pay SR170 to travel to Makkah during weekdays, while pilgrims who want to travel on weekends would pay SR200,” he said.
