Go for Ramadan Umrah once
‘to make it easy for others’

BE CONSIDERATE: Haj Ministry and Civil Defense officials are asking Saudis and expatriates in the Kingdom to perform Umrah
only once during Ramadan to give others, especially the elderly and physically weak, a chance to do their pilgrimage with ease.

Sunday 13 July 2014

A high-ranking official at the Haj Ministry has advised Saudis and expats to perform Umrah only once during Ramadan to give others a chance to do it with ease. Civil Defense has sent text messages to Saudis and expats urging them not to perform Umrah more than once.

Hussein Al-Sharif, undersecretary at the Haj Ministry, said efforts to reduce the number of pilgrims are only temporary until Grand Mosque expansion projects are complete.

“We are trying to put a cap on the number of pilgrims in their own interest and safety pending construction efforts, especially since there are many elderly pilgrims and children.”

Grand Mufti Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh, head of the grand scholars committee, had openly supported the decision to reduce the number of Umrah visitors and pilgrims during the peak Ramadan and Haj seasons.

A number of Shariah specialists have also supported the decision, saying it would benefit Grand Mosque and Prophet Mosque visitors.

Makkah has become a large workshop, with cranes dotting the landscape as expansion efforts go ahead.

Once complete, the area for circumambulation will accommodate 130,000 worshippers as opposed to the previous 30,000 limit.

Sound system covers Haram prayers up to 9 km

Authorities have installed 4,000 loudspeakers all over the Grand Mosque and surrounding
areas to ensure first-class sound quality during the peak Ramadan and Haj seasons
when hundreds of thousands of worshippers flood into the holy city.
Sunday 13 July 2014

Authorities at Makkah have installed 4,000 loudspeakers all over the Grand Mosque and surrounding areas to ensure first-class sound quality during the peak Ramadan and Haj seasons, when hundreds of thousands of worshippers flood into the holy city to perform their religious rituals.

“Speakers have also been deployed in corridors and outdoor squares,” said Faras Al-Saadi, operations director at the Grand Mosque, on Saturday.

“Authorities installed 656 speakers in the mosque’s eastern corridor and in the newly opened floors for circumambulation during Ramadan,” Al-Saadi said in a statement.

“A technical committee has chosen only the most advanced brands and models after examining the most effective sound systems worldwide,” he said. “Thanks to this premium quality speakers, prayers will be heard up to 9,000 meters away, from Gaza Street to Ibrahim Khalil Street,” he said.

“The outside speakers are wind-proof, meaning sound will remain crystal clear even in rough weather. This is a very complex technical accomplishment. Special poles have been set up on several roads around the area and south of the mosque as well,” said Al-Saadi.

The loudspeakers installed at the top of the Makkah Clock Tower can be heard up to seven km away and the powerful green and white lights that go off at prayer times can be seen from 30 km, helping worshippers with hearing difficulties.

Makkah taxi fares irk local pilgrims

NIGHTMARE FOR THE AGED: Getting around Makkah is a nightmare for the elderly, who have to walk long distances
within the Grand Mosque thanks to the ongoing construction work and are conned into paying extortionate
sums of money to get their hands on a wheelchair.
Sunday 13 July 2014

Pilgrims and residents visiting Makkah have protested the extortionate fares charged by cabbies in the holy city.

The influx of pilgrims during Ramadan and the summer season has prompted Makkah’s Traffic Department to chalk out a comprehensive traffic plan, which involves forcing private cars to park at specific parking lots almost 20 km away from the Grand Mosque.

These pilgrims then have to catch a bus to the Grand Mosque, which costs SR5 per passenger.

Many elderly pilgrims or those with children resort to taking taxis because the buses drop them off at locations that are still very far from the mosque.
“These buses are not disable-friendly and their drop-off points are simply too far for the elderly,” said Khider Islam, a pilgrim who was performing Umrah along with his elderly mother.

“There is a dire shortage of wheelchairs and taxis to get to the Grand Mosque and people are taking advantage of this,” he said.

Asad Ali, a pilgrim, was surprised at his experience when he had decided to take a taxi from the Grand Mosque to the parking lot where he had parked his car.

“I had to pay SR150 to get from my car to the mosque, which is only 20 km away from the parking lot,” he said.

“Even then, we get dropped off far away because of the construction work. I was lucky to be able to find a wheelchair for my sick brother, but not everyone is as lucky.”

“The new expansion is so vast that it takes a long time to walk within the Grand Mosque itself, another problem for the elderly and pilgrims who are unable to walk,” said Tanzeem Hassan, another pilgrim.

“There should be buggies to transport the disabled and the elderly just like at the airport,” he said.

“Although the government does provide free wheelchairs, many minors get a hold of these wheelchairs and con pilgrims into paying extortionate prices of anywhere between SR200 and SR400 depending on the time of day.”

“The government should set a fixed price so that these kids do not exploit the shortage and need for these wheelchairs.”

“Electronic wheelchairs are available for SR50 between the Safa and Marwa landmarks, but their numbers are very limited and pilgrims have to wait a long time to get their hands on one,” he said.

“I stood in line for 45 minutes to get one because they had to be electronically recharged. The government should create points of access for wheelchairs across different parts of the Grand Mosque with paid attendants to counteract children trying to make a fast buck at the expense of helpless pilgrims who are oblivious to the fact that these facilities are free.”

Saudi women make a living
by pushing wheelchairs in Haram

A young Saudi woman takes a wheelchair-bound pilgrim
to the Grand Mosque to complete her pilgrimage rites.
Sunday, 13 July 2014

MAKKAH — Despite the exhaustion from fasting and the scorching heat, Saudi women are working in the Grand Mosque by pushing disabled women pilgrims on wheelchairs.

The money they make from helping the disabled to perform their religious rites saves these women from begging, Alsharq daily reported.

Umm Muhammad Al-Shareef’s husband deserted her and the couple’s 12 children. She took her eldest child, a 17-year-old girl, to see if the two could earn a decent income to save the family from starvation.

“I am an old woman and I cannot bear hard work. I come with my daughter every day to watch and help her. We work with this wheelchair to help incapable women to perform Umrah. Despite the difficulty of the work here, halal money is better than begging or doing what is forbidden (Haram).”

Umm Maha Al-Enizi had been married for several years when her husband divorced her. He refused to support Umm Maha or their daughter and she had no choice but to look for a job so she can provide for herself and her daughter.

“I’m not educated so nobody wants to employ me. I visited the Haram frequently and realized that some Umrah pilgrims need someone who knows the rites and can help them perform Umrah including Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Saiy (the walk between the mounts of Safa and Marwa). So I decided I should try this and I succeeded. I have been working here for four years now," Umm Maha said.

"Despite the difficulty of the work, I am happy because this helps my 16-year-old daughter complete her education. In Ramadan, I work 12 hours daily to make the best use of the holy month because there are many Umrah pilgrims. The income helps me to pay the rent of my apartment.”

Umm Abdullah Al-Otaibi narrated the circumstances that forced her to work.

She said: “We are living in difficult circumstances. My husband is an old man. He has retired from work. I am a mother of four children. Even employed people find it difficult to make ends meet because of the high cost of living, so how about a family whose only income is their father’s pension and their residence is a rented apartment?”

Makkawis work hard to feed fasters

Sunday, 13 July 2014 - 15 Ramadan 1435 H

MAKKAH — A beautiful habit that the residents of Makkah have inherited from their ancestors is to show hospitality toward the guests of the holy city.

Makkawis are competing among themselves to take good care of their guests, especially during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Sometimes the Makkawis would go as far as pleading with the guests to accept what they offer them. They are doing this to be rewarded by Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said whoever provides a faster with a meal to break their fast will receive the same reward from Allah as the person fasting.

To gain the reward from Allah and preserve the good habit that has existed for many centuries, the Makkawis are determined to provide fasters with special meals for iftar (the meal taken to break the fast).

The Makkawis may take their ready-made meals to the mosques, the plazas of the Grand Mosque, the central area around it, squares and main streets in various parts of Makkah, the traffic lights and other places where pilgrims gather.

At a mosque in the Al-Shuqiyyah residential area local Saudi resident Khaled Bashaddadh said people in the neighborhood would bring iftar meals to the mosque every day before sunset.

He said it is a common tradition in Makkah that a group of young male volunteers will receive the donations of the residents in cash or kind to prepare iftar meals for fasting worshipers in mosques all over the holy city.

Bashaddadh said he made it clear to his neighbors that he would not accept cash donations but only food to prepare the iftar meals in the mosque near his home.

He said philanthropists provide him with cartons of water, fruits, dates and yogurt that he will use to prepare meal packages.

"The residents also supply me with meals that are cooked in restaurants to add to the package," he said.

Bashaddadh said he and a group of young men have dedicated themselves to preparing the iftar meals every day at their mosque.

He said: “We begin our work at 6 p.m., an hour 10 minutes before iftar time. We lay down the sufras (plastic spreads on which food is laid) and start placing the meals.”

He said every day he distributes 10 cartons of water, eight cartons of dates as well as the same number of cartons filled with fruit and 250 small bottles of yoghurt.

Bashaddadh said every day he and his group of friends to provide 250 fasters with iftar meals at their mosque.

Ali Qudus said he and his sons cool down bottles of natural water and yoghurt to serve to the fasting pilgrims or visitors.

"We add dates too and put them all in plastic bags to serve to the fasters," he said.

Qudus said he and his sons would every day distribute more than 1,000 iftar meals about 20 minutes before it is time to break the fast.

“I inherited this custom from my father who died about nine years ago. I hope my sons will also inherit it from me.”

Abdullah Barakah, an old Saudi, said with the advent of Ramadan every year he would gather his sons and grandsons at the family home to help him prepare meals for fasters.

He said his meal consists of an apple, banana, tea biscuits, a small bottle of natural water and a number of dates.

"When we finish putting all these ingredients in plastic bags we go to the undeveloped areas where we will distribute half of the quantity and take the other half to the main streets and squares," he said.

Khaled Banamah said he inherited the custom of providing iftar meals from his father and grandfather.

He said: “Fifteen minutes before iftar, I prepare a large quantity of plastic cups, small tins of dates and handkerchiefs.

“When the Maghreb adhan is called, I start filling the cups with cool Zamzam water while my son distributes the dates tins.”

Quba Mosque
_______________________

Quba — the first mosque in the history of Islam

FASCINATING: An enchanting view of the Quba Mosque in Madinah.

Sunday 13 July 2014

Quba Mosque to the south of Madinah is the second largest and prestigious mosque in the city after the Prophet’s Mosque, but claims the first place owing to its importance in Islamic history having been built in the first year of the Islamic calendar.

Quba Mosque witnesses an influx of worshippers and visitors throughout the year, but the numbers have increased these days owing to the holy month of Ramadan. Large gatherings can be observed in the mosque’s precincts especially in the early hours of the morning.

Author Sapphire Hamwi said in his book (Lexicon countries) that Quba Mosque was originally a well surrounded by a village named after it. It was inhabited by the tribe of Bani Amr bin Auf. On his way to Madinah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) visited the home of Bani Amr Bin Auf and built a mosque in the area which he named Quba.

Historical references indicate that the Prophet (PBUH) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) built the mosque to the Southwest of Madinah, three km away from the Prophet’s Mosque in the first year of the Hijri or Islamic calendar.

The mosque contained a well which belonged to Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). It became a blessed place as the Prophet’s she-camel first knelt down there to take a long draught of water after the Prophet’s journey.

The prestigious and unique characteristics of Quba Mosque compared to other mosques are cited in this Hadith narrated by the Prophet (peace be upon him): “Whoever makes ablutions in this house and offers one prayer therein, will be rewarded the equivalent of one Umrah.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) made it a habit to come to Quba Mosque every Saturday, either riding his camel or on foot and offer two rak’at prayers.
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to go to Quba Mosque sometimes walking, sometimes riding,” narrated by Ibn Umar, and in another narration: “He would then offer two Rak’at”. ‘Abdullah (Ibn ‘Umar) used to do the same.

In the past centuries, Muslims have accorded Quba Mosque much attention. It was renovated by a number of caliphs of the period. The third Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) made the first renovations. Caliph Omar bin Abdul Aziz built the mosque’s first minaret. It was renovated again in 435 AH by Abu Yali Al-Husaini who constructed a prayer niche known as the “Mihrab.”

In the year 555 AH, several additions were made to the mosque by Kamal Al-Din Al-Isfahani. Successive renovations of the mosque took place in the years 671, 733, 840, 881 AH, and the latest changes were made in the era of Sultan Abdul Majid in the year 1245 AH during the time of the Ottoman Empire.

In modern times, the Saudi regime has taken charge of the mosque by endowing the responsibility to the Ministry of Haj Affairs which made further renovations and added structures to the original design.

The modern day Quba Mosque is an architectural feat equipped with the latest facilities while maintaining its Islamic identity. The mosque has been expanded to accommodate more than 20 thousand worshipers.

In 1984, the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz laid the foundation stone for the historic expansion of the Quba Mosque. Two years later, he inaugurated the opening of the mosque after its expansion.

The Mosque was designed with an inner courtyard with several entrances. The northern section was reserved for women worshippers.

The mosque now has four minarets and 56 domes and adjoined to it is the residence of Imams and muezzins, a library, lodging for the guards in an area of 112 sq. meters, and a commercial center with 12 shops covering an area of 450 sq. meters. The mosque has 7 main entrances and 12 subsidiary ones.
The mosque has 64 toilets for men and 32 toilets for women, and 42 units for ablution.

The mosque is cooled by three central units each with a capacity of one million and eighty thousand thermal units. Quba Mosque is a unique landmark and its white building can be clearly seen from a distance.

Officials: Cut in pilgrim numbers
to ensure safety of worshippers

Monday, 14 July 2014 - 16 Ramadan 1435 H

JEDDAH – Senior officials in the Ministry of Haj have said the decision to cut the number of Haj and Umrah pilgrims this season was taken in the interest of worshippers in light of the reduced capacity of the mataf (circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba) due to the ongoing construction work in the Grand Mosque.

Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency, they said the move was aimed at preventing congestion within the holy precincts and ensuring the safety of pilgrims.

Undersecretary at the Ministry of Haj Hussein Nasser Al-Shareef said the decision was a temporary one and was necessary to protect the interests of pilgrims, especially the old and sick. He said crowding in the mataf would prevent pilgrims from carrying out their religious rites in the correct manner and it might also compromise their safety.

According to Muhammad Al-Bijawi, director general of the ministry’s branch in Madinah, the current capacity of the mataf does not exceed 49,000 worshippers an hour.

Al-Shareef said he was sure the decision would be welcomed by Muslims all over the world as a wise and appropriate move approved by the Shariah in the context of the historic King Abdullah Project for the expansion of the holy mosque.

He said the aim of the decision was not to create constraints before pilgrims but to ensure their safety and comfort.

“Those who wished to perform Umrah and Haj this year but could not do so because of the cuts in quotas will be able to make their pilgrimage in coming years in better conditions with greater ease and comfort,” Al-Shareef added.

Assistant Undersecretary for Umrah Affairs and Director General of the Haj Ministry’s branch in Jeddah Abdullah Marghalani said the decision conformed to the principles of Islam and fulfilled the purpose of the Shariah.

He advised Muslims not to repeat Umrah during Ramadan to allow fellow Muslims who are first-time visitors to Makkah to perform their rituals without hassle.

Grand Mosque emergency plan in place

Tuesday 15 July 2014

Civil Defense forces have been mobilized to implement the general emergency response plan since the beginning of Ramadan to deal with the influx of pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque in Makkah, head of the Grand Mosque Civil Defense Col. Eid Al-Hazmi said.

“Thirty teams have been trained to deal with any situation which may arise due to the expected increase in the number of pilgrims in the coming days,” he said.

Civil defense personnel have been distributed in groups of 30 at the entrances and surrounding areas of the mosque and are ready to provide emergency services or to carry out any medical evacuation operations for the sick or the elderly, if needed.

Al-Hazmi said that 30 officers and 650 personnel have been deployed in the congested areas inside and around the mosque.

Individuals work in a group system 24 hours a day, with one group working 6-hour shifts while the others rest for 24 hours.

Al-Hazmi explained that the officers and members of the Grand Mosque Civil Defense are keen on providing emergency services to visitors in need of assistance and are also prepped for transferring emergency cases to hospital and clinics. In addition, they are prepared to administer first aid in cooperation with Red Crescent teams who are also present.

So far, the Civil Defense has been receiving 75 cases a day, the majority of whom are elderly pilgrims suffering from fatigue and who require to be taken to health centers for further treatment. Members of the Civil Defense are also trained to provide guidance to pilgrims.

“We are in constant touch with the operations room of the Makkah Civil Defense which is informed in case of an incident. The details of the case are recorded for statistical purposes,” Al-Hazmi explained.

He said that the Binladen Company in coordination with the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs has launched new projects in and around the Grand Mosque. Accordingly, the Civil Defense groups have been distributed taking into consideration the construction sites in the area of the Grand Mosque.

Al-Hazmi said that a special plan has been prepared to deal with the upsurge in the numbers of visitors during the last days of the month of fasting, particularly the 27th of Ramadan and the night of the completion of the Holy Qur’an.

He said the Civil Defense will increase the number of groups to 60 support groups during the last days of Ramadan, especially on Fridays. The personnel will be posted at all entrances, exits and the congested areas in and around the Grand Mosque.

It takes 8 full months to make kiswa

INTRICATE WORK: Artisans at work on a kiswa.
Tuesday 15 July 2014

The black cloth used to cover the House of God at Makkah costs SR22 million and takes eight full months to make, Abdullah Bajawda, Kiswa Factory manager, told a local daily.

“The ‘kiswa’ used to be previously bought abroad, but in 1927, the late King Abdulaziz ordered the construction of a special factory for manufacturing the cloth in the Ajyad district in Makkah, which was later relocated to the Tayseer district.”

The kiswa is made from the best types of natural silk and goes through different stages before being ready for use.

This includes dyeing, weaving, designing, printing, embroidering, undergoing quality control at laboratory, assembling and delivering the kiswa to the head of the gatekeeper of the Holy Mosque, he said.

“The work force at the factory is currently composed of 200 artisans, in addition to the factory’s administrative staff.”

The kiswa contains gold threads weighing 120 kg and silver threads weighing 100 kg, which are mainly bought from Italy.”

Factory staff are only changed once new employees have gained experience from retiring staff.

“A total of 21 people completed a training course on how to handle the kiswa last year,” he said.

“Factory management has embarked on importing state-of-the-art technology from different countries to make the kiswa upon directives issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah,” he said. “A number of teams were sent to Japan, the United States, Canada, China, Italy and Switzerland to explore the best machines to enhance productivity at the factory.”

Over six million Umrah visas issued

Itikaf preparations ready at Grand Mosque

Wednesday, 16 July 2014

JEDDAH — The Saudi diplomatic missions abroad have issued a total of 6,135,000 visas during the current Umrah season, said Prince Khaled Bin Saud Bin Khaled, assistant minister of foreign affairs.

According to the plan of grouping of pilgrims from their respective countries, the number of pilgrims staying in the Kingdom at a time did not exceed 400,000, the Saudi Press Agency reported quoting him as saying.

Authorities have completed all arrangements and facilities to enable the pilgrims from all over the world to perform Umrah in the remaining days of Ramadan, he added.

Itikaf

Meanwhile, the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques launched online registration facility for prospective worshipers intending to perform Itikaf (seclusion and staying in the mosque with the intention of worshipping) at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Itikaf is an Islamic practice consisting of a period of spiritual retreat in a mosque especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan and it is a Sunnah (Tradition) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet (pbuh) encouraged those who perform Itikaf to spend their time reciting the Qur’an, performing prayers and seeking blessings from the Almighty Allah.

Yousef Al-Wabil, administrative consultant at the presidency, said that all the arrangements have been made for those who want to perform Itikaf at the holy mosque. Those who want to avail the facility should register online their name by visiting the link http://e-service.gph.gov.sa/ittikafDefault.aspx

The basement of the King Fahd expansion area of the Grand Mosque is earmarked for Itikaf. The area is supplied with shelves to keep the belongings of the worshipers and each worshiper will be allotted a separate safe with key. The worshipers are advised to bring in only a prayer rug, light bed sheet, pillow and two pieces of ihram dress.

Al-Wabil said the Itikaf timing will be from Ramadan 20 till the end of the Isha prayer on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr.

The prospective worshipers for Itikaf are advised to enter the mosque through gates 75, 76, 77, 81, 82 and 83. The worshipers will get their respective serial number upon their registration, and they have to follow minutely rules of Itikaf from the website.

He urged the worshipers to keep the Holy Mosque clean, honor its sanctity and not to do anything that disturbs other worshipers. He also called for not hanging dresses on the corridors or the pillars of the mosque.

Pilgrims found with fake boarding passes

Wednesday, 16 July 2014

JEDDAH – The Ministry of Haj’s field supervisors caught a number of Umrah pilgrims who tried to get on board a plane using boarding passes that were not in their name, Al-Hayat daily reported.

The passes were discovered at King Abdulaziz International Airport.

A large number of Umrah performers who were preparing to depart the Kingdom had the passes.

Nabeel Hadad, director of Haj and Umrah Department at the airport, brought the ministry’s attention to the incident and said many passengers of different nationalities had these passes.

Abdulaziz Al-Zamil, lawyer, said this is a clear violation of the law.

He said: “This is intentional forging of official documents.

“Many people commit this violation without realizing the dire consequences they might face as a result.

“Everybody should go by the book because laws are made to protect the security of society.”

The ministry earlier instructed all Umrah companies to use its electronic system during the pilgrimage season allowing them to double check travel reservations, flight schedules, etc. to prevent any flight delays.

Narrow escape for pilgrims
Wednesday, 16 July 2014

SAMTAH — More than 30 pilgrims breathed a sigh of relief when the driver of their bus asked them to get out because he smelt something burning at the rear of the vehicle. The bus was on its way to Makkah from Samtah when the driver sensed something wrong and abruptly pulled over and helped in evacuating the pilgrims. As the bus was emptied, it caught fire which was meticulously handled by the driver and some bystanders.

Wednesday 16 July 2014

Cleaners at the Grand Mosque in Makkah are facing tough time cleaning the mosque’s courtyard because of the large amount of food brought in by visitors to break their fast.

Speaking on the issue, an official at the mosque, said: “Pilgrims and visitors at the Grand Mosque don’t need to bring in their own food as authorities are supplying over a million iftar packs to them daily,” adding that large quantities of food and beverages into the Grand Mosque hamper cleaners from doing their job.

Abdullah Al-Tamih said: “Leftovers and plastic disposables were also posing a difficulty to other worshippers and pilgrims.”

The official advised visitors to deposit their belongings in safe lockers located outside the Grand Mosque, “which are secured with electronic locks and available in different sizes according to the needs of visitors.”

Pilgrims sitting idly in the courtyards of the Grand Mosque hamper the movement of those coming and going to the toilets, he said. He highlighted a number of other issues related to the maintenance of the mosque, including the wastage of zam zam water by pilgrims and the empty cups lying all over the courtyards when there are several bins available for the purpose.

“Owing to the huge crowds present at the Grand Mosque in the evenings, 500 professional employees have been assigned to supervise the cleaning operation immediately after the iftar is over,” he added.
