7.5m iftar packets offered

Tuesday 1 July 2014

Philanthropists will distribute more than 7.5 million packets of iftar meals among worshippers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah throughout Ramadan.

“Everyday they supply 250,000 iftar meals, of which 80,000 meals are distributed in the northern courtyard and 70,000 in the southern courtyard,” said an official in charge of distributing the meals.

“We also distribute 90,000 to 120,000 meals in Azza and Shamiya courtyards,” the official said, adding that a large number of young Saudis participate in the massive operation.

The Charitable Warehouse in Makkah said it has set out a plan to distribute 90,000 iftar meals inside the mosque and 120,000 meals among worshippers sitting in the courtyards. “We are taking help of 120 workers,” said Abdullah Al-Nafie, director of the charity.

He added that the workers are trained for 20 hours with the support of the Dawa Center in Makkah.

Mohammed Ali, a volunteer, said he was happy to distribute iftar meals among the pilgrims and other worshippers at the Grand Mosque.

“I come to the Haram with other friends after Asr to participate in this noble program. We are doing this only to get the reward from the Almighty.”

Abdul Wahid Al-Qurashi, another volunteer said: “I have been participating in this program for the last many years. Iftar meals are distributed among worshippers sitting inside and outside the mosque. It’s a big operation and needs the support of many volunteers.”

Siqaya service back in Holy Mosques
to revive tradition

Wednesday 2 July 2014

A Saudi charity organization aims to revive the Siqaya service, an old tradition that has become obsolete by time where pilgrims, guests and visitors of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah were offered water during the holy month of Ramadan as a gesture of good will by the natives.

The Siqaya system was carried out mainly during Ramadan, which involves serving guests with water held in a pot strapped to the back of its beholder, called Saqqa. The saqqa (the person serving water) in the old days enjoyed great respect from the visitors for the services he would offer to them by quenching their thirst.

“We are supplying Zam Zam water, cold water, juice and coffees to visitors in the Two Holy Mosques,” said Abdullah Al-Marghani, coordinator of Siqaya program, adding that the liquids will be stored in healthy and hygienic containers, which are being carried by our volunteers who will be touring in the Two Holy Mosques’ campus.

Over 100 volunteers have been deployed to serve the guests of Allah, he said, adding that the volunteers will be wearing green uniforms and can be easily spotted inside the holy mosques and also at the main entrances of the mosques and other assembly points carrying water containers on their back.

He said the containers are properly equipped to preserve cold and hot water and other liquids for as much time as possible as visitors can choose the kind of drink they prefer.

Al-Marghani said the new service aims to bring back to minds the good well traditions that used to prevail by the ancestors who used to exert great efforts in service of the holy mosques visitors during the holy seasons.

Govt ready to deal with heat,

coronavirus in Makkah

Wednesday 2 July 2014

The Ministry of Health has drawn up an integrated plan to provide comprehensive health care services to the increased number of Umrah pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.

The ministry has also made arrangements to deal with all types of medical cases, including emergency cases related to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

Focus has been shifted on the health situation because the recent advent of the deadly virus, coupled with school holidays and the Umrah season, means an increased risk of infection.

In fact, over 500 doctors and paramedical personnel are being posted throughout Makkah to cope with the Ramadan rush.

The Health Ministry will operate five health centers surrounding the Grand Mosque.

These health centers will be situated at the Ajyad Al-Sufli gate, the Ajyad Al-Alwi gate, gate 94, gate 64 and the Nadwa gate.

“All these centers will work around the clock with additional resources,” said Dr. Abdul Salam Noor Wali, Health Ministry director in Makkah.

“The centers have specialized medical staff, technicians, nurses and medical supplies and include separate sections for men and women.”

“The centers will provide first aid, primary health care and ambulance services for emergency cases. More serious cases will be referred to general hospitals in Makkah.”

“There are also 29 permanent primary health care centers in Makkah and three more under establishment this year,” he said.

“The region has also employed extra doctors, nurses and technicians to meet the growing need for medical services during Ramadan.”

“In fact, Makkah’s hospitals are fully equipped to work at full capacity during the holy month,” said Noor Wali.

“The ministry is taking precautionary measures against the coronavirus,” he said.

“Pamphlets about preventive measures against the virus are being circulated by the dozen at various entry points and other public places.”

“Suspected cases will immediately be shifted to Jeddah.”

Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, a premier health care facility in the holy city, is being equipped with additional logistical capabilities to cope with the increased influx of pilgrims during the month of Ramadan.

The hospital receives an average of 1,000 cases per day.

Waiting time has been reduced to 10 minutes from 30 minutes per patient at the hospital’s emergency wards, said sources.

Authorities have renovated the hospital to ensure high-level patient care and surveillance cameras have also been installed, according to officials. The Health Ministry provided medical care to 150,000 pilgrims last Ramadan at both Makkah and Madinah.

There have been no MERS cases reported during the current season so far.

Domestic Haj services:

No wrongdoing, asserts Saudia
Wednesday, 02 July 2014

JEDDAH – The Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) on Tuesday denied allegations of some domestic Haj service companies who maintained that the airline had refused to meet their representatives.

In a statement, the Saudia said that it had replied to some objections raised by the National Committee for Haj and Umrah (NCHU) on June 16. “The airline also asked the committee to send a working paper so as to fix a new date for meeting in order to complete the discussions. But so far, the airline has not received any paper in this regard,” the statement said.

The national carrier also noted that its department for sales and revenue for Haj and Umrah held a meeting with NCHU, which represents domestic Haj service companies at Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, two years ago. There was also a similar meeting in Jeddah last year. These meetings discussed a number of issues and approved several recommendations and agreements on the criteria and conditions aimed at putting an end to the malpractices of some fake Haj service companies, the statement said.

The Saudia also denied allegations that the airline had hiked economic class fares for domestic pilgrims to about SR2,000. “This is not true as the airline had not made any increase in fares of domestic Haj pilgrims during the last three years, and the charges ranged between SR900 for short distance flights and not exceeded SR1,400 for long distance, the statement said.

Saudia also noted that it increased seats for domestic pilgrims to 86,000 last year but had to incur losses due to cancellations following the Haj Ministry’s slashing of pilgrimage quota by 50 percent.

Grand Mosque’s annex opened for worshippers

Thursday, 03 July 2014 - 5 Ramadan 1435 H

RIYADH – Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah ordered taking advantage of the expansion project of the Grand Mosque, including the ground, first and second floors, the first and second mezzanine of the building as well as the northern, southern, western and eastern courtyards of the project and its affiliates.

The new expanded structure and courtyards constructed as part of the King Abdullah Grand Mosque Expansion Project has the capacity to accommodate more than 625,000 worshippers out of the mosque’s targeted additional capacity of 1.2 million faithful, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The King ordered opening of new toilets and ablution areas constructed as part of the project. With this, the total number of toilets and ablution areas at the mosque and courtyards reached 9,750.

The King’s orders also include provision of cold potable water inside the expanded building and its courtyards, and operation of 177 escalators and 22 lifts to facilitate the movement of worshippers. There are also escalators to take people to toilets in the lower floor of the basement plaza.

King Abdullah also directed the opening of the first and second phases of the project for upgrading the capacity of mataf (circumambulation area around the Kaaba), in addition to the existing area constructed as part of the first Saudi expansion, which can accommodate 20,000 pilgrims per hour. The first and second phases of the expanded ground floor and first floor in addition to the existing area under first Saudi expansion can accommodate 5,000 and 15,000 people per hour respectively. The terrace of the first phase will be used only for performing prayers during Ramadan. The King also issued directives for the operation of some roads to facilitate movement of pilgrims in the central Haram area.

This included partial and temporary operation of the first ring road, starting from Ajyad Street toward Al-Qashashiyah tunnels passing through new Shaab Amer tunnels and intersecting with Masjidul Haram Road in Gazza and then passing through Al-Falaq tunnels and Jabal Al-Kaaba flyover and ending with Umm Al-Qura Road. The ring road is connected with the service roads of Umm Al-Qura and Jabal Al-Kaaba streets, and temporarily connected with Gazza and Masjidul Haram streets so as to ease traffic in central area. The King’s directive shows his keenness and efforts to serve Islam and Muslims by enabling pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque to perform their rituals in ease and comfort.

Space for 625,000 more created at Grand Mosque

Thursday 3 July 2014

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has instructed Grand Mosque authorities to open the newly expanded annex buildings of the Grand Mosque for the use of worshippers during Ramadan.

A source at the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques said the king’s directive would provide extra prayer space for more than 625,000 worshippers inside the mosque and its courtyards. The royal gesture would help reduce congestion among worshippers inside and outside the mosque, he added.

The king has also ordered that pilgrims be allowed to make use of the expanded “mataf” (circumambulation area around the House of God) on the ground floor, as well as on the first floor, to accommodate 40,000 pilgrims per hour.

Nearly two million worshippers, including foreign pilgrims, attend taraweeh prayers at the mosque and a large number of them stand on roads leading to the mosque. School vacation in the Arab world has increased crowding in the holy city.

Maj. Gen. Abdul Rahman Al-Qahtani, director of communications, said that more than 1,250 cameras have been set up inside and outside the mosque to monitor the movement of pilgrims and worshippers and ensure their safety. “We monitor pilgrims through 270 TV screens and if we find anything wrong, we inform field officers to take corrective action.”

Yousuf Al-Wabil, vice chairman of the committee of religious consultants, said the presidency would not allow people to hoard space at the Grand Mosque for other people.

“This is a wrongful practice and we want to change this system by spreading awareness and preventing people from practicing it.”

Free Umrah package for singles in Riyadh

Thursday 3 July 2014

Various centers across the Saudi capital have arranged free Umrah trips to and from Makkah for singles working in public and private sector establishments.

Beginning Wednesday, there will be around 50 luxury coaches ferrying pilgrims from Asian and Arab countries on a weekly basis during the holy month.

“Program beneficiaries are mainly singles from Asian and Arab countries,” said Moulavi Ramzan from the Dawah center in Riyadh, adding that accommodation, transport and meals for breaking the fast will also be provided. Muslim expatriates living alone in the capital and its suburbs are entitled to this free package.

“We only focus on people who cannot afford to perform Umrah,” he said. Others who wish to participate in the program will also be considered for travel.

Expatriates from the Philippines, Nepal, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Syria and Egypt have already applied for travel on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, private Sri Lankan and Indian tour operators are organizing Umrah trips for families at modest and competitive rates.

“Trips cost a mere SR150 for a three-day tour to Makkah and SR200 for a five-day pilgrimage to Makkah and Madinah,” he said.

“We have made Umrah packages easily affordable to ensure that every family gets a chance to participate in the pilgrimage,” said Ramzan.

Pilgrims going on the free service will leave on Wednesday return on Friday, while others who go on Thursday will return to Riyadh the following day.
A leading hotelier in Makkah said that foreign pilgrims are less compared to last year thanks to factors such as the World Cup and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

Pilgrims happy with Makkah arrangements

Thursday 3 July 2014

The coming of Ramadan heralded elaborate arrangements made by the Makkah Police, Municipality and the Presidency of the Holy Mosques Affairs in Makkah. Their preparations have borne fruit receiving plaudits from the local pilgrims where millions of people were delighted to perform Umrah peacefully.

Pilgrims from different parts of the Kingdom expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and admired the peaceful and orderly management of crowds by the authorities.

Mohammed Mansour, resident of Riyadh performed Umrah on the first day of Ramadan. “I was happy to see the well-organized arrangements. Usually the first day of Ramadan is chaotic but with different groups tasked with inspection, detection and monitoring of problems, the journey to Makkah was blissful,” he said.

Similarly, Abdul Samad, resident of Jeddah visited Makkah on the first day with his family and they too feel that this year it is better organized and less stressful.

“The arrangements were fantastic; everything went smoothly and I congratulate the Kingdom’s efforts to make the pilgrimage safe and easy. Everything was exceptional- from the arrangements of iftar to performing the rituals,” he said.

Another resident of Jeddah, Mohammed Yaseen, said: “Saudi scouts played an impressive role by extending various services to pilgrims and other visitors of the mosque. We were able to perform the rituals with much ease. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the food supplies this year are in abundance.”

He said the Makkah expansion project is to be equally appreciated for facilitating the journey of faith for millions of pilgrims.

Many pilgrims praised the quality of services provided to them and hoped that they would continue to avail them for the rest of the holy month of Ramadan.

Haj Ministry’s excellent

services for pilgrims recognized

Thursday 3 July 2014

The Ministry of Haj in Madinah has been awarded a top European quality management certification for its services for pilgrims in the city.

The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) gave the city its Committed to Excellence (C2E) certification, the first Saudi government body to receive it.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Albejaoa, director of the Haj Ministry’s branch in Madinah, praised Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman for getting the recognition.

“He has ensured there is a spirit of competition among the various government agencies in Madinah by launching an award for best public services. His aim has been to improve the quality of government services in the region,” he said.

Albejaoa said the ministry started upgrading its services in the city a few years ago for pilgrims and visitors. It also ensured that private firms operating in Madinah improved their services.

Haj Minister Bandar Mohammad Hajjar had instructed the branch to ensure its services were benchmarked with a global quality management organization, and to outsource this process to the EFQM, Albejaoa said.

The branch then started holding specialized programs to train its employees. A significant outcome has been that several branch employees have joined the program as accredited EFQM trainees.

The process started with an EFQM consultant advising the branch on setting up programs that could be used to measure services. Specialized action teams were formed and trained to carry out the projects.

The EFQM assigned an international arbitrator to visit the ministry’s branch and audit the projects on completion. He judged that the branch had successfully passed the qualification tests and achieved the required level of C2E.

Albejaoa said this achievement would directly affect services provided to visitors and pilgrims at the Prophet’s Mosque.

He said the entire process was part of the government’s plans to ensure world-class services for pilgrims visiting the two holy mosques.

Madinah Civil Defense ready
with emergency safety plans

Thursday 3 July 2014

The Civil Defense Department in Madinah has announced its readiness to launch its plan to cope with emergencies during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The Department’s plan includes allocating manpower and equipment, as well as increasing coordination with concerned authorities, to implement civil defense measures and activities and ensure the highest level of safety and preparedness during this month.

The Director of the Civil Defense in Madinah, Maj. Gen. Zuhair Bin Ahmed Hashim Seeba, confirmed that the outreach and awareness measures are one of the most prominent and central features of the plan.

“The Civil Defense in Madinah will launch a specialized campaign to raise awareness about health and safety measures,” he said.

The campaigns will target visitors to Madinah through a number of activities and events at different commercial centers and markets in the city. The campaigns also include the distribution of pamphlets and fliers, painting exhibits inside the open spaces in the Haram, and television commercials in hotels playing in more than one language.

This year, the Civil Defense has also set up centers at both indoor and outdoor locations with a large number of people to address any emergency situations.

The director said three more indoor centers had been set up in Madinah, bringing the total of such centers to 28, in addition to 7 mobile units that will operate in various locations at peak times. A number of other centers have also been set up on the roads to and from Madinah for the first time this year.

Major General Seeba said the management plan involves ensuring the intensification of the work of safety patrols in the area, particularly in locations with a large number of people, such as market places and shopping malls.

“Fifteen emergency units have been prepared for rapid intervention should incidents occur at such locations,” he said.

The implementation of the emergency plan in Madinah will take place in four stages.

The first stage was carried out during the months of May and June, and involved conducting a comprehensive survey of markets and commercial centers, hotels, and public venues by safety patrols to identify any irregularities and ensure the effectiveness of safety systems in those locations.

The second phase will take place from 1-19 Ramadan (July) while the third phase will take place from 20-30 Ramadan (July), and will include the provision of support during the night of completion of the Qur’an and the first night of Eid. The fourth stage will take place from Aug. 1-6, 2014.

He said the numbers and locations of patrols at each site and during each stage will be determined by the situation on the ground, pointing out that the approval was issued by the Director General of Civil Defense to launch the support plan to deal with emergency situations and maintain safety in the region.

Five officers, 50 safety inspectors, and 139 officers have been deployed to cope with emergency situations and maintain coordination with local authorities at all times.

Maj. Gen. Seeba concluded his statement by wishing all Muslims a blessed Ramadan full of positivity, safety, and good health.

Sprinklers ease Ramadan hardship

WAIT: Muslims wait for the call to Maghreb prayer to break their
Ramadan fast in the courtyard of the Prophet's Mosque.

Friday 4 July 2014

Temperatures in the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah can reach up to 46 degrees Celsius but worshippers and those observing the fast are able to enjoy the spiritual atmosphere thanks to the efforts and services provided by the authorities there.

More than 500 giant fans equipped with sprinklers have been installed on the pillars of the umbrellas outside the mosque. The fans sprinkle water on the visitors providing welcome relief from the heat.

Abdulfatah Hafez Bakhesh, an Umrah pilgrim, said that although the temperatures in Madinah are very high these days, the fans with the sprinklers have greatly reduced the effect of the heat for visitors outside the mosque.

Saleh Saeed, another pilgrim, echoed similar sentiments when he said: “It is a known fact that Saudi Arabian summers are very hot, but this Ramadan is even hotter than usual. However, by introducing this new technology of cooling the premises of the Prophet’s Mosque with fans and sprinklers, the authorities have made it easier for the worshippers to perform prayers.” He added that “the giant fans and cold water from the sprinklers do miracles in reducing the heat.”

Abdulaziz Al-Saaidi, who is also in the Kingdom for Umrah, said that it is not only the worshippers who suffer from the high temperatures, but also the volunteers who serve the pilgrims breaking their fast. “But this technology has made it easier for everybody,” he concluded.

The technology of fans and sprinklers is part of the comprehensive plan included in the expansion projects of the two mosques in Makkah and Madinah and in line with the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to enable Haj and Umrah pilgrims to perform their rituals in ease and comfort.
