I was told the same thing when I went for hajj back in 1995, although the Hilton was fairly new, they said it was going to be demolished for new construction.

Both hotels still there and it's been almost 20 years. (SubhanAllah, that makes me feel so much older)

Only time will tell.

Dozens hurt in Saudi jet emergency landing in Medina

Saudi jet at Medina, 5 Jan

Aviation officials said the rear right-side landing gear had failed to deploy

A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 767 has made an emergency landing in the city of Medina, injuring 29 people, three of them seriously, officials say.

The 767-300ER aircraft was arriving from the Iranian city of Mashhad with 315 people on board.

Aviation officials said the rear right-side landing gear had failed to deploy.

The plane had reportedly been leased out to carry pilgrims to the holy city. All flights to Medina were halted for 24 hours, the airline said.

One eyewitness at Prince Mohammed bin Abdul Aziz International Airport said the plane had made two unsuccessful attempts to land before making the third emergency approach.

General Authority for Civil Aviation spokesman Khaled bin Abdullah Khaybari said the injuries happened as people rushed to leave the plane.

The jet was carrying 299 passengers and 16 crew.

Twelve of the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

State-owned Saudia is the national carrier of Saudi Arabia.

"Saudia expresses its deep sorrow to all the injured passengers as a result of the accident," the airline said.

New book focuses on Kaaba
development and construction

“History of Construction & Development of the Holy Kaaba”

RIYADH (MAMOSA Report) Jan 2, 2014

The book “History of Construction & Development of the Holy Kaaba” in Urdu by Naseem Ahmed Bin Haji Karamuddin was recently launched and highly appreciated by the Pakistani community leaders and guests at a local hotel in the Saudi capital.

Some speakers called the book historical, timely, and a remarkable effort by a Muslim architect and urged all to read it.

The 156-paged black ornate hard copy of the book on Holy Kaaba, consisting of 84 chapters, and printed in fine art paper, with hundreds of historical photographs, does justice to the subject including its historical and religious significance in the Muslim world through the lens of history.

The fact that the book was also launched in the land of the Prophet’s two Holy Mosques makes its noteworthy and all the more significant.

The remarkable initiative by the Lahore-based Pakistani author to describe in detail the stages of construction of the Holy Kaaba including the means, methods and sequence of work carried out over a long historical period makes it part of the Islamic history itself.

The author’s interest in the architectural and engineering details of the Holy Kaaba is based on his professional background as an architect.

The author may be right in stating that never in the history such a detailed description of the Holy Kaaba’s development and construction has been described stage-wise with pictorial illustrations in the form of one book.

The well-deserved initiative by the Pakistani architect becomes obvious when one goes through the book and views the vintage photos including details as to how the Holy site developed through the stages of history.

Author Naseem Ahmed Bin Haji has also described the religious history of the Holy Kaaba and backed it with authentic facts and illustrations, sketches, photographs.

For Muslims worldwide, this book on Holy Kaaba published by Al Faisal Publishers in Lahore is a must read and a valuable addition to an individual’s library regardless of his religion as it records the history of the construction and development of mankind’s oldest religious site of utmost significance– particularly for the Muslims.

The author and his publisher Al Faisal of Lahore say they are making arrangements to make the book available on amazon.com and other online stores worldwide. The author and the publisher can be contacted at: [email protected] and [email protected] respectively. The publisher’s website address is: alfaisalpublishers.com

The Kaaba

________________

The Renovation of the Kaaba

in 1417 H / 1996

The Commencement of the Work

Under the umbrella of the instructions of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz, and with the grace of Allah, Saudi Bin Ladin Group had the honour of the assignment of the construction of the Holy Ka'bah, the Two Holy Mosques and other mosques. In Sha'ban, 1416 H. all necessary preparations for the work were ready, but the time was not suitable because the period from Ramadan to Dhut Hijjah is the climax of Hajj and Umrah seasons. The work necessitated fitting a wall around the Holy Ka'bah to conceal it. This state of affairs would have deprived pilgrims and Umrah performers of direct sight and access to the Holy Ka'bah.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques was emphatic that all his projects should go through regardless of cost. Implementation of the projects should not deprivc worshippers of enjoying the sights of the sacred places. A look at the Holy Ka'bah gives them spiritual satisfaction, and most of them visit the Ancient House for this purpose.

It was necessary to respond to the needs of the visitors to the Holy Ka'bah. The commencement of the work was, therefore, postponed to a time when the numbers of pilgrims were few, with the target of completing it in due time. On the 10th Muharram, 1417 H., the work started.

The Stages of the Construction Work

A white wooden screen, surrounding the Holy Ka'bah, was the first thing to be erected. The Black Stone, which people touch was left exposed. A space between the Black Stone and the wall of the Holy Ka'bah was left to admit movement and continuity of work. A door leading to the outside of the building itself on the north-western side and another one on he south-western side were opened to allow access and egress. In the first three weeks, all people were allowed to enter into the Holy Ka'bah, itself, through the wooden screen. After prayers, people came in rows to have the honour of entering into the Holy Ka'bah. This process was systematic; a group of people entered while another waited until the first group got out, and so on.

Thus, thousands of people found access to the Holy Ka'bah where they had spiritual moments in the vastness of the Sacred House of Allah. They were also witnesses to the fact that there existed visible cracks that required repairs. This was based on a precedent set by Abdullah Ibn AIZubair (may Allah be pleased with them) who had witnesses who testified that the Holy Ka'bah had to be demolished and rebuilt on the strong foundations of the Sacred House. All the belongings of the Holy Ka'bah were restored to their places alter the renovation had been made. Hands were raised towards Heaven in supplication for those who contributed to the renovation of this sacred building.

The wooden wall around the Holy Ka'bah during construction work

A general prespective for the site of the work

- Wall decorations, such as memorial plates and other pieces were removed, cleaned and kept in safety with other belongings, gifts and ornaments of the Holy Ka'bah.

- The first step was to remove the ceiling and the pillars supporting it because it was the part that was subject to the most damage by wood worms, fungi and humidity. The rocky wall was left intact, but the whole ceiling was demolished.

- The plaster covering all the surfaces of the walls of the Holy Ka'bah was removed. Then they dug out and removed the traditional mortar mixture, hoping they would not have to remove the interior stones. On examination, it was discovered that the mixture had lost its cohesiveness due to bacteria, and humidity and this had weakened the stones of the inner body of the wall. It became necessary to remove the stones and reinsert them with mortar better suited to the purpose of the new style of construction.

- It was found that the external wall had no structural defects and that the inner lining was filling the holes as a result of the natural shape and sizes of the rocks in the external wall. It looked like the roots of molars imbedded in the gum. These almost-pointed 'roots' of varying lengths, had gaps between them.

- In general, there were no structural defects in the walls caused by the compression of the soil under the foundations, its rocks or sloping in of the walls.

- The wooden supports on the walls were subject to great damage by white ants, fungi and humidity. This is only natural in buildings that contain wooden materials.

- The work plan was set hl such a way that the renovation of one part should not affect the other, and that the work in the upper part should not affect the lower parts. Work would not shift from one part to the other unless the first one had been completed.

Therefore, the implementation of the work took the following three stages:

1- The first stage comprised the top four rows of stones.
2- The second stage comprised the part below the four rows, down to the level of the internal floor of the Holy Ka'bah.
3- The third stage went to the buried part of the level of the internal floor of the Holy Ka'bah up to the present level of the circumambulation area and below it to the depth of 40 to 70 centimeters. In the third stage, the foundation under the level of the circumambulation area was excavated to make sure that it was safe. It was found to be so.

Rare Kiswa piece fetches $1 million

PRICELESS: A unique piece of Kiswa on display during the auction in Jeddah
18 December 2013

A rare piece of the Kiswa (the cover of Kaaba) dated 1354 A.H., which was given as a gift by the monarch of Al-Bohra to King Abdul Aziz, was sold for $1 million at the second auction of Arabian Wings in Jeddah.

The piece is considered to be one the rarest pieces of the Kiswa.

Arabian Wings is a well-known art group. The auction, which fetched SR4.7 million, also saw artworks from a number of Saudi and Arab artists. They included sculptures, paintings and Islamic and contemporary art.

Arabian Wings held the event in collaboration with the Fitaihi Group.

According to Mohammed Bahrawi, chairman and founder of the Arabian Wings, the first edition of the group's auction was held in 2011.

“This year, it was all about contemporary art with different moods and tastes, and was an outstanding success for us,” said Bahrawi.

He said the new owner of the antique Kiswa cloth, who has requested anonymity, is very happy. He is planning to put it up in the next auction.

Bahrawi said having a piece of Kiswa is considered to be a symbol of pride and honor for Saudis.

“We must have a platform to display Islamic antiques in Jeddah,” he said. “The museum with Islamic treasures will be a great investment and a great opportunity for people to know about Islam and its importance.”

New Jeddah airport will be

ready by year-end

5 January 2014

The new King Abdulaziz International Airport with world-class facilities will be ready by the end of this year, said Prince Fahd bin Abdullah, president of the General Authority of Civil Aviation.

“About 60 percent of the project has been completed and the remaining work will be carried out at a much faster pace to finish on time,” he said after inspecting progress of work at the airport on Saturday.

Prince Fahd said experimental operation of the new airport would start during the first five months of 2015. The new expansion will increase the airport’s annual capacity to 30 million passengers in the first phase and 80 million in the final phase.

The SR27-billion project is designed to make KAIA one of the largest hubs in the world. Spanning an area of 670,000 sqm, the airport will have two new terminals for domestic and international passengers.

Prince Fahd said GACA has a plan to train 100 Saudi engineers on the project to help them gain expertise in airport operation and management. “We will also train government employees working at the airport to improve their performance,” the GACA chief said.

Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf, who accompanied the prince during the tour, said the new airport projects in Jeddah and Madinah offer the private sector ample investment opportunity.

“I can see considerable progress in the KAIA expansion project. I believe if the work goes on at this pace, it will be completed very soon,” the minister said. He said the new KAIA would play a pivotal role in linking East and West.

Faisal Al-Sugair, vice president of GACA, Khaled Al-Molhem, director-general of Saudi Arabian Airlines, and Abdul Hameed Abalarry, director general of KAIA, accompanied Prince Fahd during the airport tour.

Apart from the construction of two new terminals, the project includes passenger lounges, a new concourse building with 25 additional passenger bridges and connector buildings linking the terminals, air bridges and movable gates, extension and overall renovation of the existing South Terminal, apron and taxiway modifications and extensions, electrical and mechanical systems, and a car-park.

Crashlanding in Madinah

that hurt 29 under probe

Iranian pilgrims injured

A plane is pictured after an emergency landing at Medina airport on Sunday.
5 January 2014

Twenty-nine passengers were injured when a Saudia flight suffered a landing gear failure and was forced to make an emergency landing in Madinah early Sunday, aviation officials said.

Flight SV2841, coming from the Iranian city of Mashhad, had 315 passengers on board, including 16 crew members.

The captain alerted the air traffic control tower after being unable to open the rear right-side landing gear. The pilot managed to land the plane after two unsuccessful attempts, said one eyewitness.

Khaled Al-Khaibari, a spokesman for the General Authority of Civil Aviation, told Arab News: “The rented Boeing 767 flight arriving from Mashhad to Madinah had developed a technical problem in the rear wheel on the aircraft’s right side, which led to the pilot having to land without the right wheels of the rear gear.”

Airport authorities cleared the runway for immediate landing and declared a state of emergency.

The injuries happened during a stampede as passengers scrambled to evacuate the plane, Khaibari said. Eighteen passengers who sustained minor injuries were treated at the airport, while 11 were taken to hospital, he said. He said a probe has been ordered into the incident, which occurred at around 4:14 a.m.

The airport was closed for 24 hours following the incident.

“Saudia expresses its deep sorrow to all the injured passengers ... and prays to ... the Almighty that He may provide them with a speedy recovery,” the airline said.

Ghulam Rezai, head of the Iranian Haj Organization in the Kingdom, thanked the Saudi government for the good care given to the injured pilgrims. “All the injured pilgrims except four have left hospital while the condition of four is stable,” said Mohammed Al-Bejawi, director of the Haj Ministry’s office in Madinah.

Number of vacant plots blocking
Haramain Rail Project rising

The Haramain High-Speed Railway travelling in the desert
6 January 2014

The number of vacant plots blocking the Haramain High Speed Rail Project, joining Makkah and Madinah, has risen by 40.6 percent in the last two months, local media said quoting an official source at the Ministry of Transport.

The Jawhara Thuwal Plan in north Jeddah has the largest number of vacant plots whose owners have not yet finalized the expropriation procedures.

The rail plan calls for taking over 130 plots to carry out the project. The original number was 190 only two months ago which were to be distributed between Makkah and Bahra, the source told Al-Eqtisadiyah.

The source, who asked for anonymity, said the rail project will go ahead despite the existence of lands whose owners still have to finalize the expropriation procedures.

The ministry is set to address the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) to invite the owners of the lands located at the Jawharah Thawl Plan in this regard.

He said the ministry will not be held responsible for any price hikes of lands resulting from the delay of owners to consult the Land Assessment Committee and will deprive them from re-assessment claims after the expiry of the last announcement deadline.

The ministry has prerogatives to implement the project even if the owners fail to show up in accordance with the system of property expropriation for public interests.

On objections leveled by owners over the prices by the committee earlier, he said the ministry has re-assessed many lands based on decisions made by the Chamber of Grievances. However, a few lands are awaiting re-assessment after the approval of the representative of the Ministry of Finance, he said.

The Haramain High Speed Rail project, also known as the “Western Railway” is a 449.2 kilometers high speed inter-city rail transport system. It will link Madinah and Makkah via King Abdullah Economic City, Rabigh, Jeddah, and King Abdulaziz International Airport.

King Abdullah Mosque site nearly ready

Properties being demolished in the site for the King Abdullah Mosque
of Umm Al-Qura Street in Makkah
6 January 2014 - 5 Rabi Al-Awaal 1435 H

MAKKAH — Removal of properties for the King Abdullah Mosque in Makkah is 70 percent complete.

The High Commission for the Development of Makkah and the Holy Sites pointed out that compensation allocated for properties removed will reach more than SR800 million.

Some property owners have already received their compensation, while other owners are awaiting a review of their situations as they do not have title deeds to their land.

The commission said the mosque will be constructed on a 130,000 square meter area with unique Islamic architecture.

The mosque is located toward the west of the Grand Mosque on Umm Al-Qura Street and will be a prominent Islamic site.

Its parking lot will be able to accommodate 3,000 vehicles. Completion of the project is expected in about four years.

Portable Zamzam cans to be introduced

at Grand Mosque

SERVING PILGRIMS: A portable Zamzam delivery service was launched at the Grand Mosque
in Makkah on Monday by Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, chief imam of the Grand Mosque.

7 January 2014

The General Presidency of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah launched a portable delivery service of Zamzam water in the Grand Mosque’s vicinity on Monday.

Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, chief imam of the Grand Mosque, formally inaugurated the delivery service, through which the water will be delivered inside portable cans.

“Water will be delivered in portable cans to fasting pilgrims on Mondays and Thursdays and throughout the entire month of Ramadan this year,” Ahmed Al-Mansouri of the Presidency of the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque Affairs told Arab News on Monday.

The portable cans are designed to the highest hygienic standards to protect against infection and have the additional feature of carrying disposable cups.

The General Presidency has also moved to provide counseling and guidance to pilgrims and visitors to Makkah and Madinah.
The presidency is planning on displaying more literature in foreign languages and also conducting lectures for pilgrims.
Abdulaziz Al-Bakht, director of guidance and counseling, supervises such matters inside the Grand Mosque.

The presidency will distribute printed literature to pilgrims for performing rituals according to Islamic laws. It will also display Islamic rulings on various issues.

The presidency has recruited 70 full-time employees and 21 temporary employees to work on a seasonal basis for this purpose. Guidance and counseling classes will be held daily after the five prayers.

Pilgrims can avail of the Urdu translations of the lectures following midday prayers, said Al-Mansouri.

Translation and counseling activities will be held in the south side of the Grand Mosque, also known as the “Junoob Almakbariya,” near King Fahd gate and gate 94.

The General Presidency has also entered into an agreement with the Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah to train students to guide pilgrims, said Al-Mansouri.
