Heritage projects boost Madinah economy

12 September 2013

Madinah's heritage and historic projects are attracting investment and growing the city's economy, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) said in a statement Wednesday. The SCTA said it has initiated a number of projects under the Madinah Tourism Development Council that are helping to transform the city into a "major tourism destination."

The SCTA branch in the province has developed a number of sites in the province such as Hara, Raha and Quds Jabal, and conducted technical and economic studies at other sites and destinations. Rehabilitation is under way at Al-Ula heritage village, Mosa bin Nusair castle, Yanbu historic center (Sur Quarter) and Al-Jabarti and Babteen houses. The SCTA said work is currently taking place at 22 tourism sites across a number of municipalities and 38 archaeological sites. Tourists have already started to visit upgraded sites in Madain Saleh, and the Jabal Akma and Al-Khoraiba sites in Al-Ula. It has also restored historic buildings in Yanbu.

Jeddah Radio cancels Haj awareness

programs this year

12 September 2013

“Haj Enlightenment,” a popular radio program that has been broadcast on Jeddah Radio for the last two decades, has been canceled for unknown reasons.

Only seasonal daily Haj programs will not be aired, while regular broadcasting news service in Urdu, English and other languages will continue to air.

Hamza Hussain, director of Jeddah Radio’s English service, told Arab News on Wednesday that “this year, Jeddah Radio is not broadcasting Haj programs like previous years.” He also added that the radio station expects to implement changes to its content from the next Hijri year.

Jeddah Radio programs are quite popular during the Haj season, as it broadcasts programs on a variety of topics with content support from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

Saudi Radio’s Haj seasonal broadcasting programs are broadcast in English, French, Urdu, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Swahili and Turkish. Those in the Urdu and Indonesian languages remain the most popular due to the high influx of pilgrims from the Subcontinent and Indonesia.

The prime objective of the program is to educate pilgrims from different parts of the world on how to perform the Haj rites according to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at holy sites in Makkah, Arafat, Mina and Muzdalifah.

These programs are broadcast daily on AM (594 khz) for listeners in Madinah, while FM (104.4 mhz) covers the Makkah area.

Saudi Radio’s Haj programs paved the way for regular news broadcasting service in foreign languages for international listeners.

MERS alert tightened as 100th case emerges

12 September 2013

Saudi Arabia is deploying local and international resources to contain the spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), says a top health official.

His remarks came as the Ministry of Health confirmed the 100th MERS case in the Kingdom.

The ministry has pledged to double its efforts to control the spread of the disease through continuous surveillance across the Kingdom.

The ministry reported four new cases on Wednesday, bringing the total to 100 cases, including 47 deaths.

A ministry official said two of the new cases were from Riyadh and the other two were reported in Madinah.

In Madinah, the victims included a 22-year-old male citizen who was in contact with a MERS patient and a 24-year-old male citizen working in the health sector in Madinah.

In Riyadh, two Saudi men, 60 and 47 years of age, had contracted the virus from MERS patients.

Dr. Ziad Al-Memish, undersecretary to the Ministry of Health for Public Health, told Arab News that the ministry had already advised people who had contracted the virus to postpone their pilgrimage.

He said the ministry would keep the people informed of any new developments.

Medical specialists are struggling to understand MERS, for which there is still no vaccine.

It also has an extremely high fatality rate of more than 51 percent.
It is considered a cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

The Ministry of Health recently traced MERS to bats in the Kingdom.
Scientists from the Kingdom and the US have found DNA matching the MERS virus in a sample taken from a bat in Saudi Arabia.

The study was initially conducted by a team of researchers from the Kingdom, as well as from Columbia University, who detected MERS in a bat near the home of a man who died from the disease. The team found a small fragment of the virus’s genes in the animal that matched those seen in the patient.

The study, headed by the Ministry of Health, was conducted from October to April. It was initially conducted on 76 bats from the areas, in which the virus cases were identified.

Pilgrim arrivals exceed 50,000 mark

Masjid al Haram crowded on Eid al Fitr 2013
Friday 13 September 2013

More than 50,000 pilgrims have arrived so far in the Kingdom for the current Haj season, Hatim Qadi, spokesman for the Ministry of Haj, said on Thursday.
Speaking to Arab News, he said the pilgrims have been arriving through land, sea and air routes. “It has been a very smooth process and no problems have been reported on arrival,” he said.

“The monitoring and supervisory committees of the Ministry of Haj are working hard to ensure there are no hiccups. They are available in buildings meant for housing pilgrims and are conducting field inspections to ensure pilgrims are comfortable during their visit in Makkah and Madinah,” he said.

“It’s their job to make sure that housing units are clean and ready to host pilgrims. The ministry itself reviewed the leasing contracts of these units. The objective is to ensure that the services made available to the pilgrims are of high quality from the time they arrive until they leave the country. Haj service companies are being checked and verified to ensure that they comply with the regulations in place,” he said.

Electronic system helps stem tide

of Umrah overstayers

Friday 13 September 2013

A new electronic crowd management system adopted by the Ministry of Haj has been instrumental in drastically reducing the number of pilgrims overstaying their Umrah visas this year, Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar has said.

“Most of the 5.13 million pilgrims who came for Umrah this year have left the Kingdom. Only 11,000 of them now remain in the country and we hope they leave before the Haj season,” the minister said.

He said the same system would be applied to this year’s Haj pilgrims in order to prevent them from overstaying in the country seeking jobs. Outstaying Haj and Umrah visas has been one of the major problems faced by the Saudi government over the past years.

Hajjar said the new electronic system has reduced the phenomenon of foreign pilgrims being cheated by Umrah service providers. The system helps pilgrims monitor the services offered to them by companies before their arrival in the Kingdom.

“The number of complaints we received from pilgrims during this Umrah season was far less than in previous years,” he said.

The electronic grouping and disbursement system also solved the problem of pilgrims’ overcrowding at airports, he pointed out.

Pilgrims were sent to the airport only after ensuring that they held confirmed bookings on return flights. Violators of the system, including Umrah service agents and airlines, were held responsible for providing stranded pilgrims with hotel accommodation, food and return flights.

Citizens reckon existence and historians assert demolished
Mosque «Juhaynah» stirs controversy despite removed

Kiswet Al-Kaaba house officially
one of Egypt's archaeological sites

The kiswa, cloth for covering the sacred Kaaba,
used to be manufactured at the site

Wednesday 4 Sep 2013

On Monday, the Ministry of State for Antiquities decided to put the Kiswet Al-Kaaba house on Egypt's heritage list for Islamic and Coptic antiquities.

The kiswa is a special cloth that is used once a year to cover the Kaaba, a building in Mecca sacred to Muslims.

Antiquities minister Mohamed Ibrahim explained that the building, located in Gamaliya in Cairo, was put on Egypt's heritage list because of its historical importance and spiritual significance.

The Kiswet Al-Kaaba house was constructed in 1816 as a residence for a Mameluk prince, but when Mohamed Ali conquered Egypt, he turned it into a workshop to fabricate the kiswa, which Egyptian monarchs customarily sent every year to Mecca.

Secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Amin said that the building still contains equipment used in the fabrication of cotton, silk and other textiles.

The kiswa is embroidered with calligraphy in gold and silver thread depicting Quranic verses.

It was manufactured in Egypt from the 12th century CE until 1927.
