New road to Makkah opens

Sunday 4 August 2013

The new Makkah-Briman road that stretches from the Briman Bridge to the Makkah-Jeddah highway was partially opened Friday to act as an additional route connecting the Haramain Road, which stretches between Jeddah and Makkah.

The additional 28-kilometer route would enable visitors to reach the Holy City in record time, which will reduce the time spent driving to Makkah by half for many.

Director of Makkah Transport and Traffic Department, Muhammad Tawfiq Madani, said the new road is connected to the Al-Hijra Road that leads to Madinah and has exits to the Huda Al-Sham region.

“It is easier for those coming from northern Jeddah and King Abdul Aziz International Airport to take the new road. That would significantly mitigate pressure on the Haramain and Makkah-Jeddah highways that are witnessing dense traffic these days,” he said.

He said the section opened is only a part of the project that is to reach Makkah and connect it to Madinah (the part opened now reaches the Haramain road leading to Makkah) and there are still works worth SR 800 million to be completed.

''No road signs''

on newly opened Briman highway

A stretch of the newly opened highway where no traffic island and road signs are erected.
5 August 2013 - 27 Ramadan 1434 H

MAKKAH – The newly completed 28-kilometer-long Briman-Makkah Highway does not have any signs on either side of the road, or warnings for several detours as work is still being carried out on the road.

Okaz/Saudi Gazette visited the road and noticed that there was only one gas station built on the highway and there were trucks and tractors working on the unfinished road.

There were no concrete blocks in some key sections of the road that has four lanes on either direction.

Some road users expressed fear of accidents because of the absence of such barriers while others wondered when the road will be fully ready. There is no ambulance service or Civil Defense stations along the road, a fact that poses a great risk to motorists whose number will increase in the coming two months with the approach of the Haj season.

Motorists also complained about the absence of U-turn facility at some sections of the road. On a 25-kilometer stretch of the road there were no U-turns and motorists in some cases were looking for unpaved shortcuts to get on the road that takes them back to Jeddah.

The Ministry of Transport opened the road for traffic last week. People traveling to Makkah from north Jeddah and King Abdulaziz International Airport can take the road instead of Al-Haramain Expressway.

Public transport to give Madinah

massive facelift

Construction work is going on a rail line connecting Madinah and Jeddah along the Haramain highway.
Monday 5 August 2013

Studies have been completed for the establishment of a new public transport system in Madinah to meet requirements of the city’s growing population and more than 10 million annual visitors.

“Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman has endorsed the public transport plan to present it to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for his approval,” said Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar on Sunday.

He said the project reflected the government’s care for the millions of pilgrims who visit the holy city to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque, the second most sacred place for worship for Muslims all over the world.

The new transport system augurs well with the ongoing massive development projects such as the Prophet’s Mosque expansion, the Haramain Railway, the Madinah airport expansion and the new King Abdullah Pilgrims City.

Hajjar said the transport project reflected Prince Faisal’s farsightedness and his desire to meet the city’s future requirements. “Madinah currently receives more than 10 million visitors annually,” he pointed out.

Saudi Arabia has already announced plans to establish metros and public transport systems in Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah and Dammam as part of efforts to ensure smooth traffic.

The new projects, according to experts, are estimated to cost over SR300 billion.
