3,200 workers keep Prophet’s Mosque clean

Tuesday 16 July 2013

About 3,200 workers are engaged in cleaning the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. With the constant flow of pilgrims, this is no easy task. Workers are tasked with cleaning the marble floors, carpets and courtyards.

The importance of cleaning the Holy Mosque premises increases in Ramadan, with the increasing number of worshippers during the holy month.

Abdulwahed Hatab, public relations manager at the presidency of the department for Prophet’s Mosque Affairs, said that the cleaning department is the body entrusted with this mission. “Work is divided into four shifts and there are enough personnel and teams to clean all parts of the mosque,” he added.

Operations involve learning mosque pillars, walls, ceilings, domes, floors and escalators.

“Other teams are entrusted with cleaning the brass articles, the outside windows, the places where pigeons gather, as well as water facilities and bathrooms,” he said.

He said that work is divided according to locations and maps. “We have emergency plans to work out unexpected problems,” Hatab said.

“Once worshippers have their iftar, there is a mechanism in place to separate leftovers and place them in boxes allocated for this purpose,” he said. In about 40 minutes, the place is clean again to receive people for Isha and Taraweeh prayers.

Indonesia to replace aged pilgrims

with young people

Tuesday 16 July 2013

Indonesian authorities have decided to replace elderly pilgrims with younger worshippers this year without cutting down on their quota numbers. The decision comes after health warning about the MERS virus and crowding caused by the ongoing expansion to the mataf (circumambulation) area at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, an official of the Saudi Haj services said.

“We have been surprised at the speed with which the Indonesian officials have showed their willingness to respond to the Saudi Health Ministry’s call not to expose aged and sick people to any risky health situation,” Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tawafa Establishment for South East Asia Mustafa Damanhuri, told a local paper.

Haj companies plan to raise prices this year

Pilgrims are seen at the Jamarat in this file photo of last year's Haj.
Tuesday 16 July 2013

The government’s decision to reduce the number of foreign and domestic pilgrims this year will cause the cost of Haj to increase by over 35 percent.

Saad Al-Qurashi, a member of the Haj and Umrah Committee at the Makkah Chamber for Commerce and Industry, said that the cost of Haj will increase this year to compensate for the reduced number of pilgrims, adding that the number of Umrah visitors this Ramadan has been reduced by 50 percent.

The decline in the number of pilgrims is to continue for three years, he said, adding that Haj companies are looking for solutions to any potential financial problems.

“We already have a limited number of Umrah visitors for this Ramadan, which has been reduced by 50 percent. Therefore, most Haj and Umrah companies are trying to put together a new plan to balance the reduced number of pilgrims and the price of the Haj pilgrimage,” said Al-Qurashi.

“Most Haj and Umrah companies will reorganize themselves to host fewer pilgrims. Haj and Umrah companies will increase their prices to avoid any losses caused by the decline in the number of pilgrims,” he said.

The government recently announced that it is to reduce the number of foreign pilgrims by 20 percent and domestic pilgrims by 50 percent this year. Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has also backed the measure, saying it has been taken with the interests of the public in mind.

In 2012, domestic Haj companies increased their fees by 30 percent. One of the reasons given by the companies was that they were required to hire additional workers at a higher cost to make hurried arrangements to receive pilgrims because of the delay on the part of the Haj Ministry to allocate spaces at the holy sites.

Another reason cited for the increase in price was the rise in the price of meat and other commodities.

“The reduced number of pilgrims should reduce prices due to low demand. Haj and Umrah companies cannot agree among themselves to increase the prices of their services,” said economist Fadal Abu Ainain.

“In 2012, Haj and Umrah companies increased their prices due to high demand.

There were around 3 million pilgrims at the time. Haj and Umrah companies should avoid playing with prices this year,” he added.

‘Zamzam is best water on earth’

Wednesday 17 July 2013

Makkah’s Zamzam Well has the best drinking water on the face of the earth. Pilgrims at the Grand Mosque make sure they drink as much as possible and buy containers to take home to friends and family.

There is abundant Zamzam water despite huge consumption by Haj and Umrah pilgrims over the years.

The water was a gift from Allah to Prophet Ismail, peace be upon them, when he cried of thirst as his mother Hajar looked for water by running between the hillocks of Safa and Marwa.

She did this until Allah, in His graciousness, ensured that water started gushing out from under his feet, and Hajar started moving the sand to protect the water, saying “Zamzam, Zamzam, Zamzam, Zamzam,” according to a report carried by the Saudi Press Agency.

Since then, it has become a tradition to protect the well, to ensure it continues to supply residents, pilgrims and visitors.

This is the function today of the project set up by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah in the Kadi area in Makkah.

The project provides 5,000 cubic meters of Zamzam water and 200,000 plastic 10-liter containers on a daily basis.

The plant was built at a cost of SR 700 million in Ramadan 2010 and has 42 distribution points running from its headquarters. As a result, Zamzam water containers are available on a 24-hour basis.

The project’s state-of-the-art system can produce up to 5 million liters of water through a linear filter.

It has a principal storage tank with a capacity of 10 million liters, with four pumps to the Grand Mosque's square through a 200 mm stainless steel line.

The production factory was built on 13,405 square meters and consists of several buildings with air compressors, a warehouse and production lines.

It has 10MW electrical generators and works on the SCAD system, which allows for control and monitoring of all phases of the project including pumping water from the well and packaging.

The project also has a central warehouse with air conditioning and warning and fire systems worth SR 75 million. There are 15 levels of storage and distribution of 1.5 million 10-liter containers. The factory is linked through lines and bridges to ensure easier production and distribution between buildings.
