"Quba Mosque" .. The first minaret

Umrah package costs SR200 per pilgrim

from Riyadh

There are nearly 250 Umrah travel operators in Riyadh.
Monday 15 July 2013

Umrah packages organized annually by travel operators have been rescheduled to Thursday instead of Wednesdays in line with the new weekend days recently introduced by the government.

Due to the rush of Ramadan, local travel operators have also raised the price of weekend Umrah packages from SR100 to SR200 per pilgrim coming from Riyadh.

According to the Anwar Bader Est., a leading travel operator in the capital, the weekend Umrah package now begins on Thursday and ends at midnight on Saturday.

There are nearly 250 Umrah travel operators in the capital, but many are located in the city center of Batha.

For pilgrims seeking to travel to Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Mosque during Ramadan en route to Makkah, the cost will increase by SR 100. In addition, accommodation can be upgraded to a four-star hotel in the holy city for an additional payment of SR100 per pilgrim.

According to a travel operator in the city, the weekend package to Makkah and Madinah starts at 4 p.m. and leaves from Riyadh on Thursday, with buses returning at midnight on Saturday.

Each family is given a large room, with three bachelors sharing one room. Children under the age of 12 pay half the fare.

An official at Anwar Al-Shareefain, a travel agent, said a five-day package to Makkah and Madinah, which includes travel and accommodation, would cost a pilgrim SR450. The offer includes a two-day stay at a three-star hotel in Madinah and another two-day stay at a similar hotel in Makkah.

The journey begins on Tuesday and ends on Saturday. Pilgrims leave Makkah after Dhuhr prayers on Saturday in order to arrive in Riyadh around midnight.

During the journey, coaches stop at three points for dinner, sahoor and at the “meeqat” in Taif for pilgrims to change into their ihram (unstitched clothing required for male pilgrims). Pilgrims are given half an hour to don their ihrams at the “meeqat,” so that they can make it for Fajr in Makkah.

The dawah centers in the city organize Umrah packages free of charge for single Muslims in the capital. According to Maulvi Ramzan of the Rawdah Center, there will be weekly trips to Makkah only for this segment of Muslims in the Kingdom. The first trip is set to take place this Thursday.

Local hotels in Madinah, in liaison with local tour operators, have arranged city tours to historical sites. The places of interest include Quba Mosque, the first mosque built by the Prophet, peace be upon him, in Madinah, Qiblatain Mosque and the graveyard on the foothills of Mount Uhud where the Prophet’s companions were martyred.

The “meeqat” points include Dhul Hulayfah, 9 km from Madinah; Juhfah, 190 km to the northwest of Makkah; Qarn Al-Manazil, 90 km to the east of Makkah; Dhat Irq, 85 km northeast of Makkah; and Yalamlam, 50 km southeast of Makkah.

Makkah hotel prices dive 150%

The price for a suite with a view of the Kaaba used to be more than SR180,000 ($48,000)
for the last 10 days of Ramadan. It's now down to SR70,000 ($18,600) for the entire month.

Monday 15 July 2013

A tourism official in Makkah has confirmed that the prices of hotels have undergone radical change and returned to their normal rates.

“We have witnessed a 150-percent decline in both the prices of hotels around the Grand Mosque and suites with direct views of the Kaaba,” said Fahad Al-Wethyiani, head of the Hotels and Tourism Committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Development projects around the Grand Mosque will lead to the construction of massive hotels with tens of thousands of new rooms, he said, adding that these hotels will set the actual prices of hotels in the holy city.

“The decline in occupancy rates of rooms this year is 15 to 20 percent. Investors are now offering rooms at lower prices to the local market to muster a higher percentage of occupancy,” he said.

Al-Wethyiani said that the prices of hotels are now becoming low after many years, adding that foreign tourism companies and representatives of Haj service providers played a major role in creating a speculative market on the prices of hotels.

“The prices used to be more than SR180,000 for a suite with a view of the Kaaba during the last ten days of Ramadan,” he said, adding that the price has now decreased to SR70,000 for the entire month. “This represents a 150 percent decline,” he said.

He said: “Although there are fewer pilgrims this year, which has resulted in less profitability, I personally welcome the decision.” He added that this is not a personal issue, as development projects implemented by the Saudi government will benefit Muslims across the world, as well as the Kingdom’s private sector.

The Kingdom has so far spent SR100 billion to develop Makkah into a modern city with improved services to meet the needs of millions of pilgrims.

Development projects in the area of the Grand Mosque have culminated in a considerable number of construction and hotel projects, such as the Jabal Omar project, which will lead to the construction of two hotels every six months. “These will contribute to price stability and limit speculation on prices that led to the rise in prices witnessed in the past,” he said.

Hafez Al-Juhani, vice chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, agreed that prices have been high. “There is a drive to lower the prices of hotels between 20 and 50 percent,” he said.

“The number of visas has been reduced from 1.5 million to 500,000 because of the development projects. This has forced hotels to reduce prices,” said Al-Juhani, adding that the sector is expecting losses this year, something that has propelled the restructuring of plans and prices to attract local and Gulf pilgrims.

Saad Al-Qurashi estimated the losses to be SR450 million, according to surveys conducted during Shaban and Ramadan. “It is projected that losses will reach SR700 million in the Haj season,” he said, adding that these figures are not yet official.

He also said that the price of hotels came down 50 to 60 percent to attract domestic and GCC pilgrims who do not require visas.

Poor bus service vexes pilgrims

Pilgrims sometimes have to wait more than 30 minutes at the bus stop to find the right bus.
Monday 15 July 2013

Pilgrims in Makkah are finding it very difficult to go to the Grand Mosque and return to their accommodation despite the introduction of a special nonstop bus service connecting the Grand Mosque with outer districts for the Ramadan season.

The pilgrims say there are an insufficient number of buses when they want to return to their hotels, especially after the five daily prayers and the Taraweeh (night) prayers.

Muhammad Al-Harbi, a Saudi currently performing Umrah, said that despite the introduction of a mass transit system called Taraddudi Services (nonstop buses shuttling between two locations around the clock) to link the Central Zone with outer districts, a sufficient number of buses is still not on the road to cope with the huge number of pilgrims waiting to return to their rooms.

“Pilgrims have to wait more than 30 minutes at the bus stop to find the right bus,” he told Al-Madinah newspaper on Saturday.

The number of Taraddudi buses varies from place to place. “Last year, we had to wait only 10 minutes after the Taraweeh prayers, while we have to wait 30 minutes now,” he said.

According to Nasser Al-Otaibi, another pilgrim, the closure of some roads has caused crowding on roads and difficulty for passengers at bus stops.

Transportation for huge numbers of pilgrims has been required this season because of the demolition of hundreds of buildings close to the Grand Mosque due to the ongoing expansion and other developmental projects. Pilgrims are, therefore, provided accommodation at distant locations, which in turn calls for more mass transit facilities.

The Taraddudi system aims to operate buses continuously so that pilgrims may go and return from the Grand Mosque whenever they want to.

Commander of Public Security for Umrah Maj. Gen. Saad Al-Khelaiwi said this Umrah season is different from past years because of the limited space available at the Mataf (area for circumambulation), where expansion works are currently under way as part of the Grand Mosque expansion project.

He also stressed the need for implementing special measures to ensure the safety of worshippers with the cooperation of pilgrims and visitors. He said wheelchairs carrying disabled or sick pilgrims would not be permitted to enter the Grand Mosque between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

He also assured public officials that plans are under way to cope with overcrowding. He appealed to worshippers and visitors to maintain order, especially while leaving the Grand Mosque after prayers, to keep the exits free of obstacles.

He also called on all Makkah residents to postpone their Umrah until after Ramadan so that pilgrims from distant towns in the Kingdom and abroad can perform their rites more comfortably.

Astronomical Society in Jeddah confirmed, that the sky Mecca, witnessing on Monday, July 15, an orthogonal second and last of the sun on the Kaaba during the current year.

She said the Assembly, that the sun rises in the sky of Mecca at 5:47, from the eastern horizon north-east, moving outwardly in the dome of the sky, a movement caused when the earth's rotation on its axis, that mediates the sky and become straighter one with the Kaaba, and be the sun at an altitude of 89 degrees and 58 minutes, and at 12:26:43 azan time is noon noon local time, and will notice Who's at the Grand Mosque disappearance of the Kaaba, and in the shadow of all objects completely remained becomes zero meridian.

The Assembly stressed that the reason for this phenomenon is the Milan axis of the Earth, which in turn leads to the transmission of the sun between the Tropic of Cancer north and Capricorn south, passing through the line of the equator, while the Earth's rotation around once a year, and Mecca, located in the tropical zone is what makes the sun تتعامد on Kaaba AZAN TIME noon prayers according to the local time.

I knew this phenomenon since ancient times, and has been used to identify or correct the Qibla direction from areas remote from Mecca in the hemisphere, which sees the sun at this time, and by monitoring under a piece of wood or plastic or other implanted vertically on the ground, where the trend Qibla in the opposite direction for shade, where along the shadow refers to the Kaaba site completely.

It is worth mentioning that the phenomenon of the sun passes, occur twice a year in all regions which lies on latitude north and south, between the orbits of Cancer and Capricorn, and occur once a year for all regions which lies on one of these two tropics.

Blessed is the holy month of Ramadan

Friday 5 July 2013

THE month of Ramadan is a month of grace and blessing. Upon arrival of this blessed month, Allah Most High causes His blessings and forgiveness to descend upon the one who gives this month its rights. Ramadan is the month in which Allah Most High showers His blessings upon our homes, and upon those who enter the mosques, especially the House of Allah — the Kaaba. During Ramadan, the mercy of Allah Most High falls upon us, like rain falling from the clouds.

One can liken the virtue of Ramadan with charity, which is of two kinds. The first kind is where one gives charity to someone whom one meets along the street or on the path. The second kind is likened to one who visits another with the intention of giving charity. Ramadan is likened to the latter; where Allah Most High causes His blessings to descend upon the ummah of the blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is during this time, that even little effort has the ability to earn high rewards, no matter where one is, be it in the sacred precinct in Makkah, or in one’s home.

Allah Almighty is the creator of all things. He created the year, the month, the day and the hour. In the same way, Allah Most High has elevated the status of the Prophet (peace be upon him) over the whole of creation; and the status of the Kaaba over all the other places of worship, He has elevated and raised the month of Ramadan over all other months. This is entirely the will of Allah Most High, and a manifestation of His Omnipotent Power and Divine Will.

Allah Most High chose to reveal His uncreated speech, the Qur’an, in this blessed month, to His final and most beloved Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down, a guidance for the people, and clear verses of guidance and a criterion.” (Qur’an, 2:185)

Imam Al-Tabari writes that Wathilah (may Allah bless him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Scrolls of Abraham were revealed on the first night of the month of Ramadan, the Torah was revealed on the sixth of Ramadan, the Bible on the 13th, and the Qur’an was revealed on the 24th of Ramadan.

He also writes that Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah caused the Qur’an to descend to the heaven of this world, on Laylat Al-Qadr, and then when Allah wished to reveal anything from it, He revealed it. And that is what is meant by His Words: “Verily We have revealed the Qur’an in Laylat Al-Qadr” (Tafsir Al-Tabari, by Imam Al-Tabari, surat Al-Qadr)

Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain unto piety.” (Qur’an, 2:183)

Imam Al-Tabari writes that Qatadah (Allah be pleased with him) said, in reference to this ayah: “The month of Ramadan has been prescribed for the people as it was prescribed for those before them. Allah has prescribed the fast of three days of each month, before revealing the fast of Ramadan.” (Tafsir Al-Tabari, by Imam Al-Tabari, Surat Al-Qadr)

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory and is done solely for Allah Most High. In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah Most High says: “Every action of the son of Adam belongs to him except the fast. It is Mine, and I repay him for it.” (Muslim) There can be neither false pretension nor showing off on the part of the one who is fasting. If one is offering prayers, giving zakah, making pilgrimage or any other form of worship, others can see one’s worship but fasting is distinguished by the fact that only Allah Most High can see who is fasting and who is not.

The polytheists may perform various acts of worship for their false gods to please them. They may make vows to them, make tawaf around them, travel for them and fight in their names. However, they do not fast for them nor has it ever been recorded that they fasted for them. Indeed it is clear that the fast of Islam is the fast of the Truth.

Hafiz Al-Asqalani, quoting from Imam Al-Qurtubi, mentions the following Hadith: “The bankrupt person is he who shall come on the Day of Judgment with prayer, charity and fast, but he had also swore at another person, beat another, and consumed the wealth of another. His good deeds will be taken from him, and the other person will take his good deeds. And when his good deeds are no more, before what is due upon him has been paid, he takes from their bad deeds. They will be thrown at him. Then he will be flung into the Fire.

He continues to say that there is a narration from by Abu Hurayrah, in which Allah Most High says: All actions are atonement, except for fasting. Fasting is for Me and I reward it. (Fath Al-Bari, by Hafiz Al-Asqalani, Book of Fasting)

It can be concluded that Allah Most High loves the fast of a Muslim, as it is a means for him to become more aware and fearful of Allah Most High.

3,000 emergency officers deployed

at Holy Haram

16 July 2013 - 07 Ramadan 1434 H

MAKKAH — The Civil Defense has deployed as many as 3,000 officers and personnel at some 35 sites inside the Grand Mosque as well as at its new annex building and courtyards to cope with any emergency situations.

These personnel, who are specialized in handling emergency situations, are mainly stationed at the main gates of the Grand Mosque, the mataf (the circumambulation area around the Holy Ka’ba), masa’a (hastening area between Safa and Marwa), escalators and all the floors of the mosque, said Brig. Gen. Khalaf Al-Matrafi, director general of Civil Defense in Makkah.

As the flow of Umrah pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque gains momentum in the holy month of Ramadan, these forces are heavily involved in rescue work as well as medical evacuation and extending emergency medical aid.

Al-Matrafi said that there are four units to monitor tunnels and courtyards around the Grand Mosque, besides support forces stationed in Shumaisy comprising rescue and extinguishing units, ambulance services, boats and equipment that will be used during emergency situations.

He said: “The Civil Defense Department started implementing its emergency plan before the beginning of Ramadan.

“The plan aims at making optimum use of its human resources and machinery in covering all areas of the holy city and main roads leading to it through extending services such as fire extinguishing and rescue work, first aid and ambulance services and making available quick-response units.”

Al-Matrafi said the Civil Defense forces are implementing a surveillance plan aimed at ensuring the security and safety of pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque.

“As part of this, the forces are carrying out inspections at all hotels, furnished apartments, restaurants, and commercial centers in Makkah.

“For this, we have divided the holy city into seven regions and deployed a batch of 60 officers to each region.”

According to Al-Matrafi, the surveillance plan, which came into force at the beginning of the current year, covers more than 10,000 firms, shops and commercial activities including 1,247 hotels, 165 outlets for the sale of cooking gas cylinders, 165 shops, 313 restaurants, 194 fuel stations, and 3,000 commercial establishments.

A total of 400 violations have already been detected and referred to the concerned committees for further investigations.

The Civil Defense official said the plan also contains a series of awareness and guidance programs with regard to safety measures that are to be taken by pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque.

“As part of this, more than 100 panels have been installed in front of major hotels and public squares in addition to 20 huge screens in the courtyards of the Grand Mosque, with guidelines from the Civil Defense in different languages.

“More than 1 million location maps, giving details of flood-prone areas, have been distributed.”

Al-Matrafi said the Civil Defense is also sending more than 4.5 million awareness text messages during the holy month.

“There are 103 shelters to evacuate Umrah pilgrims in the event of emergency situations, besides 60 fire extinguishing units and 30 rescue units,” he said.

The Civil Defense personnel will use 300 motorcycles to handle emergency situations, the official added.

Harvesting the benefits of Ramadan

Friday 12 July 2013

IN the month of Ramadan it is very important that we spent a few moments to understand some of the wisdoms and lessons that we can learn from this month of fasting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Let the day that you fast not be the day that you break fast as equal.”

The above Hadith means one’s behavior, attitude and outlook are the same whether one fasts or not, i.e. fasting has no effect upon that person. This is why we need to reflect on some of these lessons.

Gaining Taqwa (piety)
God ordained fasting for gaining Taqwa, “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa.” (Qur’an, 2:183) Taqwa in this case means to make a shield between oneself and God’s anger and hellfire. So we should ask ourselves, when we break our fasts, has this fasting day made us fear God more? Has it resulted that we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire or not?

Drawing closer to God
This is achieved by reciting and reflecting on the Qur’an during night and day, attending the Taraweeh prayers, remembering God, sitting in circles of knowledge and, for those who can, making Umrah. Also for those who can, making I’tikaaf (seclusion) in the last ten nights of Ramadan, so as to leave all worldly pursuits and seclude oneself in a masjid just thinking of God, so as to bring oneself closer to God. When one sins, one feels distant from God. That is why one might find it hard to read the Qur’an and come to the masjid. However, the obedient worshipper feels closer to God and wants to worship God more, because he is not shy from his sins.

Acquiring patience and strong will
God has mentioned patience more than 70 times in the Qur’an and has commanded patience in more than 16 ways in His Book. So when one fasts, and gives up one’s food and drink, and one’s marital sexual relations for those hours, one learns restraint and patience. This Ummah needs men and women that are strong willed, who can follow the Sunnah and the Book of God and not waver in front of the enemies of God. We do not need emotional people, who just raise slogans and shout, but when the time comes to stand by something firm, they cannot do so, they waver.

Striving for Ihsaan (righteousness and sincerity) and staying away from riyaa (showing off)
Ihsaan means to worship God as if one seeks Him, and even though one does not see Him, He sees all. Hasan Al-Basri said, “By God, in the last 20 years, I have not said a word or taken something with my hand or refrained to take something with my hand or stepped forth or stepped back, except that I have thought before I have done any action, ‘Does God love this action? Is God pleased with this action?’ So when one is fasting, one should gain this quality of watching oneself and also staying away from riyaa’ (showing off). That is why God said in a Hadith Qudsee, “Fasting is for Me and I reward it.” (Bukhari) God singles out fasting from all other types of worship saying, “Fasting is for Me”, because no one knows whether you are fasting or not, except God. For example, when one is praying or giving charity or making tawaaf, one can be seen by the people, so one might do the action seeking the praise of the people. Sufyaan Al-Thawree used to spend the nights and the days crying and the people used to ask him, “Why do you cry, is it due to the fear of God? He said, ‘No.’ They said, “Is it due to the fear of the hellfire?” He said, ‘No. It is not the fear of hellfire that makes me cry, what makes me cry is that I have been worshipping God all these years and doing scholarly teaching, and I am not certain that my intentions are purely for God.’”

Refinement of manners, especially those related to truthfulness and discharging trusts
The Prophet (may God send His blessing and peace upon him) said, “Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then God has no need that he should leave his food and drink.” (Al-Bukhari)
What we learn from this, is that we must pay attention to the purification of our manners. The Prophet said, “was sent to perfect good manners.” (Maalik) So we must check ourselves, are we following the behaviour of the Prophet? For example: Do we give salaam to those we don’t know and those we do know? Do we follow the manners of Islam, by telling the truth and only telling the truth? Are we sincere? Are we merciful to the creation?

Recognizing that one can change for the better
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Every son of Adam sins and the best of the sinners are those who repent.” (Ibn Maajah) God provides many opportunities to repent to Him and seek His forgiveness. If one was disobedient they can become obedient.

Being more charitable
Ibn Abaas said, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month.” (Al-Bukhari) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will receive the same reward as him, without anything being reduced from the fasting person’s reward.” (At-Tirmidhi)

Sensing the unity of the Muslims
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Those of you who will live after me will see many differences. Then you must cling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Hold fast to it and stick to it.” (Abu Dawood)
In this month we sense that there is a possibility for unity, because we all fast together, we break-fast together, we all worship God together, and we pray Salaatul-Eid together.
Therefore we sense that the unity of possible. It is possible for Muslims to be a single body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to God and His Messenger.

Learning discipline
The Prophet (peace be upon him) made us adhere to discipline and strictness, strictness that does not lead to fanaticism or going outside the bounds that God has laid down. One cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this will not be accepted by God. Muslims should learn to be very strict in their lives, because they are people of an important message, which they mold their lives around.

Teaching the young to worship God
It was the practice of the people of Madinah that during the fast of Aashura (which is now a recommended fast of one day) to get their children to fast with them. When the children would cry of hunger and thirst, their parents would distract their attention by giving them some sort of toy to play with. The children would break their fast with their parents. (as mentioned in Al-Bukhari). So the young should be brought to the Masjid and they should pray with their parents, so that they are able to get into the habit of becoming worshippers of God. If one does not encourage children to fast when they are young, they will find it very difficult to fast for thirty days at the age of puberty. This is why the Prophet said, “Command your children to pray at the age of seven and beat them at the age of ten (if they do not pray).” (Haakim)

Caring for one’s health
Fasting has many medical benefits and it teaches Muslims to take care of their health and build strong bodies. The Prophet said, “A strong believer is better and is more beloved to God than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone.” (Muslim)
