Crown prince opens Madinah

festivities today

Tuesday 12 March 2013

Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, will launch today yearlong celebrations to mark Madinah as the capital of Islamic culture.
The celebrations, which coincide with the historic expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque and the newly announced multibillion-dollar development projects in the holy city of Madinah and its suburbs, will be led by Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman.

“The opening ceremony will be attended by a large number of top government officials, ministers, royal family members, foreign dignitaries from Arab states and abroad as well as diplomats,” said Sheikh Saleh bin Awad Al-Maghamsi, secretary-general of the events organizing panel of the governorate.

He said more than 130 Islamic cultural personalities, including scholars from around the world, will participate in the celebrations.

Al-Maghamsi said that more than 40 Saudi government agencies will participate. These agencies, he said, will also be working closely through the year to present a series of cultural and historical programs in Madinah.

Madinah is known for its centers of spirituality, faith, knowledge and science. This modern city in western Saudi Arabia is the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah. The city, which is also home to the three oldest mosques in Islam — the Prophet’s Mosque, Quba Mosque and the Mosque of the Two Qiblahs — was the power base of Islam during the times of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

He said about 400 cultural, scientific and heritage related programs will be staged on 30 different locations in Madinah during the year.

“The cultural, historical, social and economic features of Madinah qualify the ancient city for the status of the cultural capital of Islam besides making it a symbol of the unity of Muslims around the world,” said Al-Maghamsi.

According to organizers, the events will include two major exhibitions: The first is titled “Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah” to be staged near the Prophet’s Mosque. This exhibition will feature the life and works of the Prophet (pbuh), whereas the second show will explain the history of Madinah.

Other functions will include a documentary film on Madinah as the capital of Islamic culture. A series of lectures will be delivered on the occasion. An important lecture on the Prophet (pbuh) and another on “young Muslims and aspirations” will be delivered by scholars.

A series of expedition tours will be organized to the city’s landmarks for local and foreign visitors. A photo contest will be organized to show the religious and historical aspects of the city in addition to a story writing contest for children. The events will also witness a special honoring ceremony for scholars of the city.

Madinah heritage event attracts top Pak officials

The Madinah Islamic heritage and cultural program, which starts today, attracted two Pakistani officials to visit Saudi Arabia.

Samina Khalid Ghurki, Pakistan minister of national heritage and integration; and Shagufta Jamani, former state minister arrived in the Kingdom on Friday.

“Though we have a very busy schedule in this last government session, we also have very strong cultural and economical relations with Saudi Arabia, so we gladly accepted this invitation by the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information,” said Ghurki.

“The already strong relationship between the brotherly countries can still be improved upon. We asked the Saudi ambassador in Pakistan to make a permanent Saudi heritage and cultural pavilion in our International heritage exhibition center, Loak Wirsa, in Islamabad. We consider Saudi Arabia as our second home,” she added.

She also said that the Saudi Minister of Culture and Information, Abdul Aziz Khoja, invited Pakistani artists and people to enhance the cultural exchange between the two countries. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia already had two cultural exhibitions where Pakistani artists came and showed their talent.

“Both countries share Islamic heritage and culture, and this visit will strengthen it more,” said Saud A. Al-Sheikhi, general manager at the Makkah branch of the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Aftab Khokhar, Pakistani consul general said, “We will make sure to follow up this cultural exchange. Delegations from Saudi Arabia will visit Pakistan and Pakistani artists will also visit Saudi Arabia.”

Makkah solar lighting project

will save state treasury SR 2.2 billion

Wednesday 13 March 2013

The Makkah solar street lighting project will save the state treasury SR 2.2 billion in 20 years, said Osama Al-Barr, mayor of Makkah in a recent statement.

“The cost of the 100 megawatt solar powered lighting project, which is estimated at SR 2.4 billion, will be paid in monthly installments of SR 10 million,” Al-Barr said.

“We are the first municipality in the world to launch a solar project that will cater for the power needs of the entire municipality,” the mayor added.
A consortium comprising Rolls Royce and General Electric, in addition to other Saudi companies and another consortium led by ACWA Power have been short-listed in the bidding process for the contract.

The first consortium’s bid is priced at SR 2.98 billion for 25 years of operation, while the second consortium has proposed SR 1.29 billion to operate the project for 11 years.

The two consortiums were selected from a total of 20 companies that submitted their proposals to earn the contract earlier this year.

An official from the Makkah Municipality said in an earlier statement that the project would commence in four months and would require 12 months to be completed.

The first stage of the project will be a pilot scheme, covering three of the nine parts of the Crown Prince Plan 9 that covers a total area of around 43 million square meters. The project will be implemented throughout the city if the pilot scheme is successfully executed.

The project is currently open for prospective investor and developer bids, to provide the city with 30,000 to 40,000 light poles powered by solar energy.
Amin bin Abdulqader Naebalharam, deputy mayor for municipal investment development and chairman of the Solar Energy Committee, said such a project would contribute in reducing costs for companies providing street lighting equipment, in addition to cables, fittings and other requirements, “especially in remote areas.”

Madinah Capital of Islamic Culture 2013

____________________

Madinah festivities launched

13 March 2013 - 01 Jumada Al-Awwal 1434 H

MADINAH — Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense, Tuesday launched the yearlong celebrations to mark Madinah as the capital of Islamic culture.

Over 130 noted Islamic cultural personalities, including scholars from all around the world, were in attendance along with Prince Faisal Bin Salman, Emir of Madinah region.

Madinah — the Prophet’s City — is known for its centers of spirituality, faith, knowledge and science. This modern city in the western part of the country is the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah. The city, which is also home to the three oldest mosques in Islam — the Prophet’s Mosque, Quba Mosque and the Mosque of the Two Qiblahs — was the power base of Islam during the times of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The launch of the festivities also coincides with the multi-billion riyal development projects in and around the holy city, including the massive expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque.

Sheikh Saleh Bin Awad Al-Maghamsi, secretary general of the events organizing committee of the governorate, said 40 government agencies will be participating in the festivities and will also be working closely throughout the year to present a series of cultural and historical programs in the city.

Earlier in the day, Crown Prince Salman visited the Prophet’s Mosque to offer prayers and greet the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his two companions Abu Bakr Siddiq and Omar Bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them).

He was received by a number of senior officials and scholars, including Sheikh Abdurahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, and his deputies — Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Faleh and Sheikh Muhammad Al-Khozaim.

Crown Prince Salman received a number of prominent scholars, sheikhs, imams of the Prophet’s Mosque, senior civilian and military officials, as well as a group of citizens at the palace of Prince Faisal. During the visit, he issued directives to increase the bed-capacity of Prince Sultan Armed Forces Hospital in Madinah from 87 to 187. He ordered the General Directorate of Military Works to take immediate steps to implement the project. The Crown Prince also directed to speed up engineering design works for establishing a new dialysis center with 18 units at the hospital.

The Rabat-based Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), an affiliate of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has chosen Madinah as the Islamic Culture Capital for the Arab region for 2013.

Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal said that selection of Madinah as culture capital highlights the holy city’s sublime position in the hearts of Muslims across the world. “It is an extreme delight for all Muslims to visit the city in order to greet the Prophet (peace be upon him) and offer prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque,” he said.

As many as 400 activities and programs, including conferences, seminars, recreational activities and competitions, as well as wide variety of cultural programs and folk art shows highlighting the rich culture and civilization of Madinah city will be held as part of the celebrations.

There will be two exhibitions displaying the various stages of the holy city’s history, and showcasing the life story of the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions from a historical perspective.

Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Abdulaziz Khoja said that the ministry has developed a comprehensive media plan to promote all activities and events throughout the year. The programs include broadcasts on radio. Saudi Channel One, Cultural Channel, and Ekhbariyah Channel, in addition to the participation of newspapers will air the event.
