More than 10,000 Tunisians to perform Haj this year

Tuesday 19 February 2013

An estimated 10,374 Tunisians will arrive in Saudi Arabia to perform Haj later this year, Nourredine Khadmi, Tunisian minister of religious affairs said after a meeting with the Saudi Minister of Haj in Jeddah on Saturday.

Khadmi, in a statement to Arab News, expressed his high regard for the efforts of the Saudi government to serve the pilgrims.

He also said that the holy places are undergoing improvements that are beneficial for pilgrims. Improvements such as the train to the holy places and the projected train between the Two Holy Mosques will greatly help people perform their religious duties.

Saudi Haj Minister Dr. Bandar bin Mohammad Al-Hajjar welcomed the Tunisian minister and the accompanying delegation.

Hajjar impressed upon the Tunisian minister the importance of adhering to the standard programs prepared by the Ministry of Haj and Endowments, like the education of pilgrims prior to their arrival in the Kingdom, and the schedule of the throwing of stones.

Hajjar also stressed the importance of concluding contracts for air transport and housing at an early stage of preparations.

MWL body denounces Iranian film on Prophet

19 February 2013 - 08 Rabi Al-Thani 1434 H

MAKKAH – The International Organization for Islamic Scholars, an affiliate of the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL), Monday denounced the Iranian filmmakers’ move to depict the personality of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The organization urged the Iranian government to urgently intervene to stop shooting of the film and prevent screening any part of it. “It is the responsibility of Tehran to stop such acts, which are contrary to the principles of the Islamic Shariah, occurring in its territory,” the organization said in a statement carried by Saudi Press Agency.

According to the statement, portraying the life of the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions is in clear violation of the Islamic principles. “This is the unanimous view adopted by the Islamic scholars, experts in jurisprudence and top bodies representing them. MWL had made authentic studies on the issue of making films on the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions about 40 years ago (in 1391H) and came to the conclusion that this was not permissible,” the statement said.

The organization urged the Muslim governments as well as bodies such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Al-Azhar, and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy to mount pressure on Iran to stop screening the film.

A few months ago, well-known Iranian director Majeed Majeedi announced that his new movie on the Prophet (pbuh) was almost completed. The movie, costing over $30 million, is a three-part historical epic that narrates the Prophet’s childhood and life before the revelation, his life after the revelation and the spread of Islam. The shooting of the film began in south Iran in October 2011. A number of actors including Amin Tarokh, Mehdi Pakdel and Sareh Bayat have joined the cast of the film “Muhammad (S)”.

The film has sparked controversy all over the Islamic World.

Earlier, Al-Azhar scholars, including the Grand Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, slammed it and demanded its prohibition.

Thats is going to be terrible. InshaAllah, my parents will be going next week, and we intend on going next month, but this means they would not be able to do normal Tawaf at these times. A complete circle is not possible since the floors and roof are no longer there.

Hmm! Solution, but not advised. Wear the Ihram on during that time to perform Tawaf.

Umm Al-Qura to help

with Haram crowd management

Wednesday 20 February 2013

The Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs yesterday signed an agreement with Umm Al-Qura University for conducting research on crowd management and translating the presidency’s Arabic documents into other languages.

The signing ceremony took place at the university’s headquarters in Abidiya. Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the presidency, and Umm Al-Qura President Dr. Bakri Assas, signed the deal.

Addressing the ceremony, Al-Sudais commended the Saudi government’s efforts in the service of pilgrims and development of the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah in order to expand facilities for worshippers.

“The presidency receives all-out support from the government to carry out its mission in the best manner,” Al-Sudais said while highlighting endeavors to develop the organization.

He said the agreement with Umm Al-Qura was in line with the presidency’s partnership with various civilian and government institutions in order to improve its services.

Under the agreement, Umm Al-Qura will conduct research on crowd management at the two holy mosques and will translate all the documents of the presidency, including Friday sermons and other religious statements, into other languages.

Umm Al-Qura’s teachers will give lectures at the two holy mosques on various Islamic topics. The university will be able to make use of the expertise of the scholar under the presidency.

Students of Makkah Haram institute and college will be able to pursue their higher studies at the university.

The Haram Library will also receive Umm Al-Qura’s support. Assas underscored the importance of the five-year agreement, saying it would facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise for the benefit of two sides. He said the university would conduct research and provide consultancy services for the benefit of the two holy mosques and their visitors.

OIC channel to confront

Islamophobia, boost unity

Wednesday 20 February 2013

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation yesterday emphasized its plan to establish an effective satellite television channel to confront Islamophobia and strengthen economic ties between member countries.

“We’ll hold a four-day meeting of experts at OIC headquarters here from Saturday to discuss various aspects of the project in order to present it at the next meeting of OIC information ministers,” said Essam Salim Al-Shanti, director of the media department.

“Our objective is to have a strong and effective media that can address the needs of the Muslim world having different languages with various cultural backgrounds,” he said.

The new channel will present its programs in English, Arabic French. “Its main objective is to project the true picture of Islam and confront the challenge posed by Islamophobia, especially in the West,” Al-Shanti said.

He said the channel would also work for promoting intercultural dialogue in order to bring the Eastern and Western cultures and the North and South closer.

“It will help exchange of knowledge between OIC countries, highlight the issues of Muslim minorities and promote joint Islamic action,” the OIC official said.

Expanding trade and economic cooperation among the 57-member group is another major objective of the proposed channel, which will telecast scientific, technological, health and educational programs.

“The OIC channel will work for realizing the 10-point objectives set by the third emergency Islamic summit held in Makkah in 2005,” Al-Shanti said, adding that it would also cover all OIC events and programs.

The channel project was first proposed by a meeting of OIC information ministers in Gabon last year.

Later, a foreign ministers’ meeting in Djibouti endorsed the project.
The fourth emergency Islamic summit in Makkah and the recent OIC summit in Cairo also wanted to make the channel a reality.
