Licenses granted to organize

trips to ''historic sites'' in Makkah

Visitors at the mouth of the Ghar Hira Cave on Jabal Noor, about 3 km from the center of Makkah.

Thursday, February 14, 2013

MAKKAH — A total of 34 Saudis have been granted licenses to conduct organized tourist trips to historic sites in Makkah, an activity which is presently being carried out randomly by some foreigners and Saudis, according to the executive director of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) in the holy city.

“This market has an annual turnover of more than SR200 million,” Abdullah Al-Sawwat said.

The pilgrims and visitors will be taken to a number of historic locations, including Jabal Al-Noor, Ghar Hira Cave, Jabal Thour, the Kiswa Factory, Namirah Mosque and the holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat.

He said the tour organizer will be committed to a tourist program approved by the SCTA and will be using a tourist guide to provide correct information to the tourists about all these places.

Al-Sawwat recalled that a pre-Umrah tourist program was organized for pilgrims last year in collaboration with the Ministry of Haj and the Directorate General of Passports. “We will further expand this program during the coming Umrah season,” he added.

Tens of mini-buses and sedan cars are parked daily outside the Grand Mosque to transport thousands of pilgrims of various nationalities to Jabal Al-Noor (the Mountain of Light) early morning till sunset.

Abu Naif, a Saudi bus driver, said he has been transporting pilgrims from the Grand Mosque to the historic sites for more than 15 years. “I rent a mini-bus from one of the auto dealers to do this job, which brings me up to SR20,000 each season,” he said, adding that most of the times he was also playing the role of a tourist guide providing information to pilgrims about these historical places.

“Some pilgrims are keen to write on the rocks while others are determined to take some stones from the Jabal Thour as souvenirs,” he said.

Mohsen Hussain, an owner of a mini-bus, said his tourist trip starts early morning from the Grand Mosque. “I charge each pilgrim between SR10 and SR30 per a trip,” he said.

Abu Radhi, another Saudi citizen, said he has been using his 9-seater to take pilgrims to historic places for more than 15 years. “Our work extends from early morning until close to Maghreb prayer. I charge pilgrims up to SR50 per person during the high seasons,” he said.

A security man at one of the historic sites, who did not want to be identified, said some pilgrims erroneously believe that the rocks of the mountains in Makkah are blessed and will grant them children and wealth.

“Some illegal residents gave them this false notion and charged them SR50 for a photo on the mountain,” he said.

Pakistan minister signs annual Haj

agreement with Saudi counterpart

Thursday 14 February 2013

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah signed here yesterday the annual Haj agreement for 1434/2013 with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Haj Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Hajjar.

The agreement includes provision for a contingent of 1,790 Pakistan service officers and members of the medical mission to travel from Pakistan to help pilgrims.

It was agreed that about 40,000 pilgrims will travel directly to Madinah from Pakistan.

The first Haj flight will arrive in Saudi Arabia on Dhul Qa’da 1, 1434 (Sep. 7, 2013). The last Haj flight has to reach the Kingdom on Dhul Hijjah 4, 1434 (Oct. 9, 2013).

Post-Haj flight operations will begin with the departure of the first flight from the Kingdom to Pakistan on Dhul Hijjah 14, 1434 (Oct. 19, 2013).
It has been agreed that Haj visas will only be issued to pilgrims holding digital international passports.

When they leave, pilgrims will be allowed to carry specially prepared Zamzam cans packed and supplied by the Two Holy Mosques Zamzam Project.
Pakistan pilgrims will be allowed to travel to the Kingdom on all airlines licensed by the Saudi Arabian civil aviation authority.

Shah said earlier this week that an expected 200,000 Pakistani pilgrims will come for Haj this year, up from the 180,000 initially approved.

During their meeting, Shah praised the Saudi government for providing upgraded facilities for Umrah and Haj pilgrims.

The minister was accompanied by a team of senior Pakistani officials including Chaudhary Mohammed Azam Samma, Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs; Aftab A. Khokhar, Consul General of Pakistan in Jeddah; Shehzad Ahmad, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs; Syed Abu Ahmad Akif, Director General of Haj; Syed Rafeo Bashir Shah, Director Pakistan Haj Mission; and Bahrullah Hazarvi, Director in the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Moving conveyor to transport pilgrims

from squares to the Mataf

Mataf entry only for pilgrims at weekends

Individuals not wearing ihrams will be banned from the mataf
on Thursdays and Fridays 30 minutes prior to Maghrib and Fajr prayers.

Workers busy on the project to expand the Mataf in the Haram in Makkah
Saturday 16 February 2013

Only those wearing ihrams are now being permitted to enter the mataf (area of circumambulation) of the Grand Mosque on weekends.

Individuals not wearing ihrams will be banned from the mataf on Thursdays and Fridays 30 minutes prior to Maghrib and Fajr prayers.

The General Presidency for the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque Affairs along with the security forces of the Grand Mosque has taken this step to avoid congestion.

Ordinary worshippers who come for Maghrib and Fajr prayers will be directed to the roof, the ground floor and the plazas outside the mosque that can accommodate large numbers of worshippers.

Commander of the Grand Mosque police, Brig. Yahya Al-Zahrani, said: “There is no prevention, but relocation of ordinary worshippers in addition to the Umrah pilgrims who come for iftar inside the mataf during the White Days (13th, 14th and 15th of a Hijri lunar month) or on Thursdays and Mondays.”

He pointed out that the redirection process would begin as soon as the operations room and the command center at the Grand Mosque realize that the mataf is full of tawaf performers.

Al-Zahrani said this measure has been taken in line with the mataf expansion project, which was ordered by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. He sought cooperation from all worshippers with security staff to create room for circumambulating Umrah pilgrims.

Meanwhile, over six million Umrah pilgrims are expected in Saudi Arabia this year, one million more than the number last year, said Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar yesterday.

“The number of Umrah pilgrims is expected to cross the one million mark in Ramadan alone. An average of 400,000 pilgrims are arriving every month this season.”

The current season began on Dec. 14 last year and will last until the end of Ramadan in the first week of August. The ministry has issued more than 1.3 million Umrah visas so far, while 775,000 pilgrims have already arrived in the Kingdom, Hajjar said.

More than 6 million

Umrah pilgrims expected this year

1.3 million Umrah visas issued so far

775,000 pilgrims have already arrived

Over six million Umrah pilgrims are expected in Saudi Arabia this year, one million more than last year, said Minister of Haj Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Hajjar, in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency yesterday.

“The number of Umrah pilgrims is expected to cross the one million mark in the month of Ramadan alone. An average of 400,000 pilgrims are arriving every month this season,” said Al-Hajjar.

The current Umrah season began on Dec. 14 last year and will last until the end of Ramadan in the first week of August.

The ministry has issued more than 1.3 million Umrah visas so far; while 775,000 pilgrims have already arrived in the Kingdom, Al-Hajjar said.
There has been a 10 to 20 percent annual increase in the number of pilgrims over the past few years, he said.

The minister said the most Umrah visas were issued in Egypt, Pakistan and Algeria, based on reports from Saudi missions in more than 70 countries.
Umrah applications are processed with the help of an integrated digital system, he said.

“The ministry, with the help of the digitized system and field inspectors, is monitoring all services offered to pilgrims to ensure they get speedy and excellent services specified in their packages,” Al-Hajjar said.

The ministry is also supervising and inspecting locations where companies in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah provide Umrah services. The ministry also accepts complaints from pilgrims if they have any, he said.

The minister stressed the need for Umrah companies to stick to the agreements they sign with their clients. The ministry’s inspection teams will report defaulting companies and take action against them, he warned.

The minister dismissed reports that the expansion of the mataf, the area to circumambulate around the Kaaba, would reduce the number of pilgrims this year.

The minister said the massive multi-billion riyal expansions underway in Makkah and Madinah are to ensure maximum comfort and safety for pilgrims and visitors.

The ministry is coordinating efforts with other departments and agencies to conduct studies and generate new ideas to offer better services.
“The ministry is keen to minimize the practice of pilgrims squatting in the courtyards of the two holy mosques and nearby areas this year,” the minister said.

He added that the ministry is working with the Interior and Foreign ministries to end the practice of some pilgrims not leaving the country after their pilgrimage.

Holy Mosque - 10 February 2013

Saturday, February 16, 2013

JEDDAH – An estimated 400,000 Umrah performers are arriving every month for minor pilgrimage this season, Minister of Haj Dr. Bandar Muhammad Hajjar was quoted as saying by the Saudi Press Agency, Friday.

He said that more than 1.3 million Umrah visas have been issued by the ministry till now. Some 775,000 Umrah performers have already arrived in the Kingdom, said the minister, adding that all resources have been mobilized by the ministry and related agencies in line with the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz.

Hajjar expects the number of Umrah performers to increase to more than half a million compared to last year. The Kingdom witnesses a 10 to 20 percent increase in the number of Umrah performers every year, he said.

Egyptians, Pakistanis and Algerians are expected to top the list of number of Umrah performers, according to official statistics issued by Saudi embassies in over 70 countries.

In Ramadan, the figure is expected to rise to one million and by the end of the season it will touch the six million mark. Last season, the number of Umrah performers reached five million.

The minister confirmed the readiness of the electronic tracking system, adding that the ministry personnel through electronic systems and field committees tours the places where Umrah performers are staying to monitor the services provided to them. Hajjar denied that the expansion of the Mataaf area will affect the number of Umrah performers this season. He stressed that Umrah companies ought to comply with the conditions agreed on with pilgrims.

The minister said the holy site development projects are meant to develop and modernize the Jamarat Bridge, complete the Masha’er train etc.

Oldest pieces of the Quran discovered

The Quran pieces have been found in the cellars of Sanaa’s Great Mosque.

2/11/2013

The oldest excerpts from the Quran have been discovered in the cellars of the Yemeni capital Sanaa’s Great Mosque, daily Bugün has reported, adding that former Turkish Religious Affairs Director Tayyar Altıkulaç has gone to examine the pieces.

“Workers saw the Quran pieces when they opened the cellar. Why do we call them pieces? Because in the early periods of Islam, there were not too many Qurans and people used to read it by cutting it into pieces. These pieces were worn down as they were transferred from person to person. After the development of writing, Qurans increased in number and these pieces were gathered and kept in a place.

When the door of the cellar was opened, snakes came out. The cellar has a window and water came in from there. This is why some of these pieces decomposed and got dirty,” said Altıkulaç, underlining the importance of the discovery.

According to the daily, the pieces of the holy book were discovered during restoration works that started on the mosque after a collapse in the structure.

Some of the pieces have previously been sold at London auction houses by former governors, he said.

“The Quran pieces need restoration at the moment. They have been kept randomly in 20 sacks.”

He said the pieces were under the responsibility of the Yemeni Culture Ministry and that they should be handled one by one and restored.

“Some of the Quran pieces are from the companions of the Prophet Muhammed and some date back to second and third centuries. They are very important sources for the academic world,” he said.
