Makkah’s new 5-star hotel

to open before Ramadan

Jabal Omar project in the holy city of Makkah
Thursday 27 December 2012

A 500-room five-star hotel will be opened near the Grand Mosque in Makkah before Ramadan as part of Jabal Omar housing project, said Abdul Rahman Faqeeh, chairman of Jabal Omar Development Company’s board.

“The new hotel will be managed by Hilton International,” the Saudi businessman said, adding that it would be comprised of two tower buildings each with 20 floors. The hotel will be located in S1 area of the project, overlooking the mosque’s western courtyard.

The hotel will have prayer areas for both men and women in addition to a four-story shopping mall. The project’s first phase includes four more hotels: Marriott Makkah, Hyatt Makkah, Conrad Makkah and Hilton Makkah Convention Hotel, Faqeeh pointed out.

Speaking about Saudization of jobs, he said Jabal Omar would create at least 11,000 jobs for Saudis after completion of its three phases, including 3,800 in hotels. “During the next 18 months we will employ 1,350 Saudis.”

Faqeeh said hundreds of Saudis would be trained to work for the first Hilton hotel before Ramadan. The company disclosed plans to employ 4,000 more Saudis within three years, Al-Sharq Arabic daily reported.

Jabal Omar is developing 2.2 million square meters of land near the Grand Mosque. The site was designed to include 38 hotel towers and the country’s largest shopping mall. The project will help meet the housing requirements of the growing number of Haj and Umrah pilgrims.

More than 10 million people descend on Makkah throughout the year and about 3 million pilgrims attend the annual Haj event. The 38 hotels under construction will be managed by 28 companies and will add 13,500 rooms to Makkah’s hospitality industry when they’re completed in five years, a senior official said.

The project is being developed in five phases at a cost of SR 20 billion ($5.3 billion). The first phase of the project, which includes 10 towers, is being built by Nesma & Partners. Baytur Construction Co. and Azmeel Contracting & Construction Corp. won the contract for the second phase, which includes four towers.

SR 60 billion approved for Makkah Metro

Sunday 30 December 2012

The Cabinet approved a SR 60 billion plan for the implementation of a metro rail network in Makkah, which would link the Makkah Metro and the Two Holy Mosques Express Train to facilitate access to the Grand Mosque.

The first of four stations will be located in the Ajyad area in front of Al-Shohada Hotel, the second in Mount Madafea, the third in Shoab Amer at Gaazh region, and the forth in the Misfalah area, said Abbas Qattan, assistant deputy director for Construction and Projects, and chairman of the Committee for the Development of Makkah municipality. Qattan also pointed out that there would be 1,800 property expropriations for building these four stations.

“The committee of the assessment and evaluation of real estate, which consists of the governorate of Makkah, Makkah Municipality, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance in addition to two expert real estate agents has completed estimating Shoab Amer’s real estate after the completion of a cadastral survey in the area. Accordingly, the Saudi Electric Company has also been instructed to disconnect the power supply to these properties” said Qattan.

He said that the committee of the assessment and evaluation of real estate began estimating Mount Kaaba’s real estate, and it would begin within two weeks to assess Ajyad real estates in preparation for disconnecting their power supply.

He explained that the properties had been evacuated and their owners and investors warned against contracting any Umrah or Haj companies as the buildings would be demolished for the Metro project.

Some property owners complained of the delay in the payout of compensations, particularly since some compensations belong to a number of heirs. Qattan explained that all amounts were available for distribution immediately after the completion of all the necessary procedures. However, some deeds to the lands or buildings didn’t have a recording of the dimensions, delaying the payment of compensation.

He indicated that these properties constitute only a small percentage compared to the number of properties that have been expropriated in favor of the Development of the Northern Courtyards (CDNC) and its complementary projects.

Historical Colonnade

The Abbasid/Ottoman Colonnade

View 360 ' Tour: http://tools.tourwrist.com/panos/56463

The Abbasid/Ottman Colonnade, historical architecture of the old mosque, surrounding the Kabba, was a result of number of historical renovations of the Holy Mosque of Makkah.

Initially, the mosque was an open area with no ceiling or walls. The first expansion and renovation took place in the 7th century (1400 years ago). Throughout the years, with the high number of pilgrims visiting the holy mosque, there was a need to expand the mosque area even more. Therefore, the mosque was rebuilt with sustainable material to accommodate more people. The major construction work of the old architecture of the holy mosque were done by :

The Abbasid Caliph Mohammed Al-Mahdi in the 8th century and in 16th century by The Ottomans Sultan Salem. This is the reason why it is refereed to the old architecture as Abbasid/Ottoman Colonnade

Madinah airport to have a pilgrim terminal

Thursday 3 January 2013

The Haj Ministry will establish a terminal for pilgrims at Prince Muhammad International Airport in Madinah this year to meet the requirements of growing numbers of faithful who come for Haj and Umrah.

Sahel Al-Sabban, deputy minister for transport and projects, said the new pilgrim terminal would be completed by the end of this year at a cost of SR 30.14 million.

The Madinah airport is currently witnessing an expansion project that will increase its capacity to eight million passengers in the first phase and 12 million in the second phase.

The new Madinah airport project includes construction of new terminals covering 138,000 square meters. It will have 18 departure gates with air-bridges linked to aircraft in addition to parking for 20 planes. The project’s total area spreads on four million square meters.

Last year, GACA opened the newly established international terminal at the airport that can handle 35 flights daily. “The new terminal has the capacity to accommodate 600 passengers per hour,” GACA said, adding that the capacity would double to 1,200 passengers once the second phase is completed.

Al-Sabban said his ministry would carry out a number of new projects this year including the branch building and an agency for Umrah in Makkah, adding that allocations have been made for them in this year’s budget.

“The new projects are being implemented at the start of the Umrah season that will continue for eight months,” the minister said.

Last year more than 5.5 million pilgrims performed Umrah. “It is 18 percent more than the number in 2011 when 4.1 million came for Umrah,” Al-Sabban said.

He attributed the cooperation of government and private agencies to the success of the Haj and Umrah operations last year.

He emphasized the importance of new electronic track system, saying it would improve services to Haj and Umrah pilgrims.

“The new system will enable pilgrims to know the services they are going to receive in Makkah and other holy sites from their home countries,” Al-Sabban said.

The system will also enable pilgrims to pay for services using credit cards. It also involves taking fingerprints of pilgrims before issuing visas. Pilgrims will be able to select from different options of services.

“The ministry’s electronic gateway would be launched soon after completing the necessary infrastructure,” he said. The infrastructure is being developed at highest standards with the support of specialized companies.

The ministry has trained a large number of Saudis to work for the Haj and Umrah service sector. It has licensed about 200 companies to provide Umrah services. There are more than 2,700 foreign agents in the sector.
