Ajwa dates

a significant gift from Saudi Arabia

Saturday 17 November 2012

Haj pilgrims across the world prefer to have a memorable gift from Saudi Arabia, Ajwa - soft dry variety of date fruit - whether a pilgrim from Buraidah or Bangladesh it doesn’t matter, all prefer to have a taste as well a pack back home.

Packed dates of Ajwa are available across the Kingdom especially in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah including departure lounges of International Airports. It’s the only dates that have attractive style of packing and lowest weight packs. Saudi Arabia having world’s highest number of palm trees and harvest about 35 varieties of dates and Ajwa is primer among it.

The history of Ajwa dates goes back to 5000 BC and it’s the part of Tibwi Nabvi, the Medical practice of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) through plants, where Ajwa date has prominence. There are several references in Hadith and Islamic historical literature about Ajwa. Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said that “One who takes seven Ajwa dates in the morning, he remains under the protection of Allah from magic and poison for whole of the day". As many as seven Ajwa dates comprise 120 calories. Those who have made it a habit to take 5 to 7 Ajwa dates without fail everyday are less susceptible to carcinoma and circulatory diseases. The Ajwa dates are fraught with 70 percent of sugar and 30 percent of floric acid, sulphur, protein, copper, iron fibre and potassium.

Many strongly believe in remedial therapy in Ajwa as it was advocated by none other Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), specially women believes that it prevent black magic, most of women Haj pilgrims prefer to take Ajwa dates with them meant for presenting gift to their near and dear one who are suffering with various illness.

There are few farms that harvesting Ajwa in holy city of Madinah itself within the boundary Haram. There is a large farm of Ajwa located Nearby Quba mosque. A lot more farms are located on outskirts and surrounding villages of the holy city.

In Madinah most of shops selling Ajwa dates in packets and some as loose. Vendors at site of Ohud battle filed which comprising mostly foreigners are selling it loose; like other dates Ajwa also ripe in peak summer later it is kept at cold stores in order to continuing the sale throughout the year specially in Ramadan, Haj sessions. Long preservation of dates looses the taste.

Most vendors in open air with constant exposure to sun and heat selling the dates that lost real delicious taste value. Several expats are indulged in Ajwa date trading.

Ajwa variety is belonging to holy city of Madinah only and Ajwa means a product of Madinah however same variety is harvested in Qassim area also brought into Madinah and selling it with the same name. Usually foreign pilgrims are not interested in purchasing of dates from other region than Madinah. Ajwa price depends upon the size, a good quality large size dates of Ajwa now being sold around SR. 120 – 150 per KG and small size fetching the price range between SR. 80- 70 per KG. Packed tray sells containing weight of 500 grams and one kilo has more price.

As flights connectivity to various International destinations increasing from Madinah’s Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport, the sale of Ajwa and other dates also gaining momentum. Online sale of Ajwa also introduced lately in Pakistan, India and Egypt.

Apart of Ajwa, Sagai and Amber verities that has large size draws attentions of foreigners in Madinah. Baid, Al Rabea and Sukkari verities are liked by largely Saudis.

The news of the Mataf is very interesting.

I had always joked about having a conveyor belt where people would just stand and the belt would turn round the Mataf.

But here Alhumdulillah it is for the elderly. I think this is going to be a great success for the elderly and disabled.

This statement came yesterday while he was inaugurating a work-shop paving way for the Custodian of al-Haramain al-Shareefain King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz's project to increase the capacity of the Mataf Courtyard, which was held in partneship with the General Presidency (of the affairs of al-Haramain), Haram Security force, Civil Defense and the Saudi Bin Laden group.

As-Sudais also reassured the importance of keeping the Mataf clean and maintaining it from sand and dust, and the attempt to complete the project in the duration ordered by the Custodian of Al-Haramain Al-Shareefain, explaining that the capacity will reach 150,000 people per hour.

He also explained that the project includes an integrated system of Tawaf and Sa'i for disable people, in addition to the system of a network of external pedestrian bridges which will help in managing the crowd movement inside Masjid-al-Haraam.

Mataf expansion:

Old mosque ''will not be touched''

19 November 2012 - 05 Muharram 1434 H

MAKKAH – The mataf area where worshippers perform the tawaf ritual (circumambulation of the Holy Ka’aba) will accommodate over 150,000 people per hour once it is expanded, according to Dr. Muhammad Al-Khuzaim, deputy president of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques’ Affairs.

Dr. Khuzaim said the old Haram area will be left unchanged, although slight changes will be made to keep it at the same level of the mataf. He added that it will also be connected with the ground floor and the courtyards.

Special lanes for wheelchairs used by the physically-disabled will be built while corridors will be developed to be in line with the mataf. More space will be created inside these corridors to facilitate the movement of worshippers.

Al-Khuzaim added: “The implementation process will take three years. The subsequent project will be the installation of an air-conditioning system for the entire Grand Mosque.”

The mataf project aims to provide pilgrims and visitors with necessary services to help them perform their rituals and obligations in ease and comfort.

Work on the project started Thursday with the installation of huge cranes at the northeastern courtyard of the Grand Mosque. The contractor of the project has sought the evacuation of several offices close to the mataf and the command center of the Haram security near Al-Safa Gate.

Authorities have made it clear that the expansion work will not affect the upcoming Umrah season.

The expansion is being carried out on the basis of a plan prepared by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Haj and Umrah Research. The plan focuses on making maximum use of available space while maintaining the architectural features of the Grand Mosque.

According to the plan, the mataf will be separated from prayer areas and will be linked to different levels of the mosque, with entrances to and exits from the mataf and direct access from the mataf to the masaa, the walkway between the mounts of Safah and Marwah.

The mataf on the second and third floors will have cable cars to carry aged and disabled pilgrims and there will be direct access to these floors from outside. The top floor of the mataf will have an automated walkway revolving around the Kaaba.

The current mataf is a circle with a diameter of 95 meters with a capacity for 28,000 people per hour, though at peak seasons it rises to 40,000 people per hour.

The first Saudi expansion of the mataf was undertaken 60 years ago.
The new project will also take steps to make the structure tremor proof.

The expansion

of the Prophet’s Mosque (Part 1)

Muhammad Sayed Al-Jakni
19 November 2012 - 05 Muharram 1434 H

MADINAH — After years of suffering and patience, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was granted permission by Almighty Allah to emigrate to Madinah. It was narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Oh Allah! You have ordered me to leave the place I love the most. Oh Allah! Make us go to the place You love the most!”

Shortly afterwards the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Oh Allah! Make us love Madinah as much as we love Makkah or more.”

The Prophet’s (pbuh) love for Madinah surpassed his love for Makkah, although the latter is home to the Ka’ba and Muslims from around the world turn toward it to perform their prayers. Haj, the journey of a lifetime, is also performed in Makkah.

But the comparison between both the cities is different: Makkah represents holiness and sanctity whereas Madinah love, mercy, and sanctity. The grave of the Prophet (pbuh) also lies in Madinah.

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he started building the first mosque for Muslims. A Qur’anic verse revealed during the period was: “A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in.”

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered Madinah, he was riding his camel and everyone in Madinah was inviting the Prophet (pbuh) to stay in their home. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Leave the camel. It will stop where the Almighty Allah orders it to stop.”

The camel stopped at a spot which later became the area consisting of the ‘Mihrab’ (niche in the wall indicating the direction of prayer),” the pulpit and ‘Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah’ (the Noble Garden). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that area is a garden from the gardens of Paradise. It is the area where prayers are answered and Muslims cry while supplicating to Allah; it is the area from where the Prophet (pbuh) preached about Islam.

After his death, the Mothers of Believers, the Prophet’s (pbuh) wives, educated and taught Muslims about Islam from there.

Located inside the ‘Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah’ are the rooms of the Mothers of Believers. A Qur’anic chapter, Al-Hujorat, was named after these rooms as they have special sanctity as a gift from Allah, which no one can ignore or regard it as insignificant.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Between my house and my ‘Minbar’ (the pulpit), there is a garden from the gardens of Paradise.” The reward of performing a prayer at the mosque is equivalent to 1,000 prayers elsewhere except at the Grand Mosque.

When the Prophet’s Mosque was built, Muslims used to face the ‘Bait Al-Maqdas’ while performing their prayers. The Prophet (pbuh) was ordered later to face the Ka’ba when performing prayers. Qur’anic verses were revealed to him to change the ‘Qiblah’ (direction) while he was at Bani Salamah Mosque, which is located on the west side of Madinah. The change of ‘Qiblah’ was one of the most significant events in the Islamic history because it made the Jews angry and indignant, and Muslims happy and joyful.

Before the change of ‘Qiblah,’ the Prophet (pbuh) always wanted to face the Ka’ba when performing prayers.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a ‘Qiblah’ with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward ‘Al-Masjid Al-Haram.’ And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer].”

According to the prevailing opinion regarding the issue of the ‘Qiblah,’ the part of the Qur’anic verse that says “So turn your face toward ‘Al-Masjid Al-Haram’ means turn your face towards the Ka’ba.

Throughout the history of the Prophet’s Mosque, Muslims have preserved the ‘Qiblah’ and no one has made any major changes to it except minor ones made by two caliphs: Omar Bin Al-Khattab and Othman Bin Affan.

They both moved the location of the ‘Mihrab’ a few meters further; and this decision was undertaken after the majority of the companions unanimously agreed to it. There was no difference of opinion over the decision as it was based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying of moving the ‘Mihrab’ by a few meters.

Two things to note: Firstly, Omar Bin Al-Khattab expanded the Prophet’s Mosque from the western and northern sides in line with what the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, and whatever he has legislated should be done by Muslims. When Omar Bin Al-Khattab expanded the ‘Mihrab,’ he was working according to the Prophet’s (pbuh) sayings. It was narrated by Imam Ahmad that when Omar Bin Al-Khattab expanded the mosque, he said: “I wouldn’t have expanded this mosque had I not heard the Prophet (pbuh) say: “We should expand our mosque.” Read part 2 in tomorrow’s edition

The expansion

of the Prophet’s Mosque (Part 2)

20 November 2012 - 06 Muharram 1434 H

MADINAH — The expansion of the mosque during the time of both caliphs covered only the area of the ‘Qiblah’ area, and not the whole mosque.

Noorul Deen Al-Samhoudi, the well-known historian of Madinah, quoted the following saying narrated by one of the companions: “While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting in his usual praying spot inside the mosque, he said ‘We should expand our mosque’ and pointed with his hand toward the ‘Qiblah.’” Based on this saying, Omar Bin Al-Khattab moved the location of the ‘Qiblah’ by a few meters. This saying reflects the respect and great keenness companions held for whatever the Prophet (pbuh) said.

Secondly, Othman Bin Affan increased the Prophet’s Mosque area and expanded it from the western and the northern sides just like Omar bin Al-Khattab had done. He also bought the houses surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque for the sake of expansion. Before his death, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave Othman Bin Affan the glad tidings of a house in Paradise.

He had also moved the ‘Qiblah’ by few meters and built in it the ‘Mihrab,’ known as “Al-Mihrab Al-Othmani,” which had been named after him.

The Imams of the Prophet’s Mosque have been performing prayers and leading congregations of Muslims from inside this ‘Mihrab’ to date. Othman Bin Affan’s decision for expansion was based on one of the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “The area between my house and the original ‘Mihrab’ is a part of Paradise.”

Caliph Othman Bin Affan received permission from Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), one of the Prophet’s wives, to include her room in the expansion that covered the entire area between the Prophet’s grave and the pulpit inside the mosque, which is called ‘Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah.’

Ibn Zubalah narrated on the authority of Abdullah Bin Omar Bin Hafas that Caliph Omar moved the ‘Qiblah’ wall to the location of the pillars inside the Prophet’s Mosque, while Caliph Othman moved it further ahead. Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), was asked to give up her room for the sake of expanding the mosque and a house nearby the mosque was bought for her instead. The ‘Qiblah’ wall was moved further ahead toward the end of ‘Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah.’

Ghali Al-Shanqiti, a historian who has written profusely about Madinah, said in one of his books that the rooms of the Prophet’s wives surrounded the mosque from the southeast side, the east, and the north up to the northwest corner, particularly at “Al-Rahmah Gate.” Hafsah’s room was located exactly where visitors of the Prophet’s Tomb stand with the tomb on their left side. A little bit to the north, there was an alley separating Hafsah’s room from Aisha’s room, according to Al-Shanqiti.

Noone, throughout these past centuries, dared to change the location of the Mihrab inside the Prophet’s Mosque or expand the mosque beyond Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah. Only the western, northern, and eastern sides of the mosque have seen expansions throughout the history since the time of the Prophet’s companions, who followed the footsteps of the Prophet when they expanded the mosque.

In one of his books on the history of Madinah, Al-Samhoudi wrote: “No one has even made any suggestion to make any changes to the location of the ‘Mihrab’ inside the Prophet’s Mosque, not even the companions, because the ‘Mihrab’ has been in the same place ever since and remained as it is. It was placed by Angel Jibreel in this spot. Al-Nawawi, a well-known Muslim scholar who died in 1278, said every spot on which the Prophet stood and performed prayer should be left unchanged.”

Several expansions and restorations have taken place inside the Prophet’s Mosque over the past centuries. The most significant ones were listed in a history book about Madinah written by Ali Hafiz, a renowned historian.
Looking at the above table, it becomes apparent that the largest expansion was ordered by the Kingdom’s founder King Abdul Aziz, who implemented the project following numerous requests by the people of Madinah. The expansion news appeared in Al-Madinah daily in 1948 while the expansion was implemented in 1950 after several houses surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque were expropriated and their owners were compensated. It took five years for the expansion to be completed. The implementation of phases was carried out by King Abdul Aziz’s son, King Saud, in 1955.

In fact, the Prophet’s Mosque and the Grand Mosque have seen several expansions during the era of Al-Saud. Roads were paved, tunnels were dug, airports were developed, and currently train projects linking Makkah and Madinah are being implemented. Today, the Prophet’s Mosque is awaiting one of the largest expansion projects in its history, similar to previous expansion projects in terms of focusing on the parts that have been expanded by previous Muslim rulers and leaders and the caliphs before them.

All the previous expansions have left the position of ‘Mihrab’ and Minbar (the pulpit) unchanged. The ones made during the era of the caliphs were endorsed unanimously by Prophet Muhammad’s companions. Al-Abbas, the Prophet’s uncle, had even donated his house for the expansion. It used to be in the same spot where the ‘Mihrab’ was erected by Omar bin Al-Khattab.

The expansion introduced to the western side covered a part of Hafsah’s room and was also approved by the companions and wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him). It has been reported that all the following expansions, including the ones carried out by the Saudi government, have been approved unanimously.

The proposal for the new expansion was made by several committees, all headed by the Emir of Madinah. It took these committees two years to finish their proposal, which takes into consideration all Shariah and historical aspects of expansion. Exquisite Islamic architecture is vividly reflected in the tall minarets and large domes that appear in the proposal’s drawings.

'Roads of Arabia'

________________

Sultan Bin Salman inaugurates

'Roads of Arabia' in Washington'

Exhibition highlights KSA’s cultural dimension

Saturday 17 November 2012

Prince Sultan bin Salman, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), stressed the importance of “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Marvelous Masterpieces Exhibition’ as a window on Saudi culture and heritage to the outside world while formally opening the expo in Washington D.C. on Thursday.

The exhibition was organized by the SCTA in collaboration with Sackler and Fryer Museum, an affiliate of Smithsonian Foundation for Museums and Research.

“People know only about Saudi Arabia’s religious, political and economic dimensions that make noticeable marks on the outside world, but the cultural dimension of the Kingdom has been confined to the realm of experts, scientists and researchers,” the prince said.

The series of Saudi antiquities exhibition was first launched under the aegis of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah at the Louvre Museum in Paris in 2010 with the aim of highlighting the splendid cultural features of the Kingdom to the outside world.

"During the past stops in France, Spain, Russian and Germany, the exhibition attracted more than 1.5 million visitors,” the prince added.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, Prince Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel Al-Jubeir, Secretary-General of the Smithsonian Foundation for Museums and Research G. Wayne Cliff, Director of Sackler and Fryer Museum Julian Rabie, a number of princes and Saudi and US dignitaries apart from a number of Islamic and Arab diplomats were present at the opening ceremony.

The exhibition includes some 320 masterpieces illustrating the history of the Arabian Peninsula from the Stone Age to the modern times.
In his welcome speech, Cliff expressed his pleasure at the Saudi authorities selecting the museum to launch the first leg of the exhibition’s US tour.

“The exhibition would provide a rare opportunity to the US public to enjoy various aspects of the Kingdom’s history and civilization, which were not known to them except to a few antiquities experts and scientists,” Cliff said. Rabie also spoke on the occasion stressing the importance of the event.

During the opening event, the hosts and guests exchanged memorial gifts as a mark of the official opening. The exhibition will receive visitors from Saturday, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The guests toured the exhibition and listened to interpretations and explanations from the museum guides.

Cultural and arts activities will also be staged on the sidelines of the exhibition.

The last show of the exhibition, organized early this year, was hosted by Berlin’s Pergamon Museum.

“This exhibition shows the cultural and civilized dimension of Saudi Arabia, which is saying to the world today that it is indeed a country that embraces many civilizations. It also shows that the role that the Kingdom and its leadership are playing today is in fact a historical genuine role that was crowned in the past by Islam, which by the way, did not eradicate these civilizations,” a German visitor commented after viewing the exhibition.

The exhibition’s two-year world tour has been undertaken after receiving approval of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.
It was hosted in Paris by the Louvre Museum, La Caixa Forum Museum in Barcelona, Spain and Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“The exhibition showcases 300 archaeological findings including some excavated 10 years ago reflecting the civilization that existed in the Arabian Peninsula,” Rabie, who is also former professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the Oxford University, said while addressing a press conference attended by more than 70 US media persons on Wednesday.

Ali Al-Ghabban, deputy chairman of the SCTA, took the journalists around explaining to the history of each showcased piece. Some of the artifacts are more than a million years old while some others are of the modern of Saudi awakening, he said.

A news from the past...

Custodian of Khana Kaaba Sharif in city

Karachi, December 30, 1899

Saturday, December 30, 1899 - Karachi

It was a rare opportunity to meet the custodian of the Khana Kaaba, the most revered place for the Muslims of the world where they perform Tawaf round the clock, 24 hours a day, is in Karachi for the past three days for a short visit, and was feted to a grand luncheon here Sunday afternoon.

The honoured guest, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Yahya Al-Shebi, belongs to the well known family of Saudi Arabia, known as the Shebis.

They hold the key to the Kaaba Sharif for thousands of years. When the Holy Prophet Mohammad (saw) conquered Makkah, he ordered for the key to the doors of the Kaaba Sharif, the building in the middle of the Haram Sharif, to clear it from idols. On being informed that the key to the door of the Kaaba Sharif was held by the Shebi family, the Prophet (PBUH) called for him.

The then Shebi came and handed him over the key to the Nabi-e-Kareem (saw) . The Prophet (PBUH) opened the door, removed the idols, which kuffar had kept there as their “gods”, and washed the entire Kaaba, cleaned it from inside, in order to make it worthy for prayers, and Tawaf, etc.

Ghusl (washing) of Kaaba Sharif, has become a tradition since then and is continuing uninterrupted, The Kaaba Sharif is given ghusl twice a year, every 30th of Shabaan, and 15th of Muharram to keep it clean for the Muslims coming for Hajj and Umra, and anytime during the year.

After performing the Ghusl, the Prophet (PBUH) handed over the key to the door of the building to a Shebi but then Jibrael (A.S) brought Wahi on him that the key to the Kaaba Sharif would remain in possession of the Shebi family till the day of judgement, and anyone trying to take it from them, would be treated by God Almighty as guilty of tyranny. In his short speech, Abdul Qadir Shebi who inherited the key after its earlier custodian Aziz Shebi who passed away last year, thanked the people of Pakistan for their hospitality. Earlier, Amir A Khan, the chief executive of an organization, called Ana Haji, which produces many Islamic items, and plans to expand its business to serve the Muslims of the world, thanked Mr Shebi for gracing the occasion.

The lunch was attended by former Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Mr Jan Mohammad and Mr Rauf Tabani, and others.
