Sun alignment with Kaaba on Thursday noon

28 May

A previous sun alignment with the Kaaba is shown in this file picture.
The celestial phenomenon called “zero-shadow” happens twice every year.
Tuesday 26 May 2014

Astronomers say that the sun will align with the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Thursday, May 28, at noon.

The disc of the sun will be positioned immediately over the Sacred House, said the Jeddah Astronomical Society on Sunday in statement. On Wednesday, the sun will rise at 5:37 a.m. from the northeast horizon and continues moving until it comes directly overhead on the Kaaba at 12:18 p.m. The Kaaba will lose its shadow for a brief time.

Astronomers said the celestial phenomenon called “zero shadow” occurs twice every year in the Grand Mosque because of its location between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer.

Aside from May 28, the event also happens every July 16th of each year.

Due to the tilt of the Earth's axis, the sun travels at 23.5 degrees north and south of the celestial equator. The sun falls directly overhead on places lying over the equator during equinox and moves northwards towards the tropic of cancer and then again progresses southward.

The public must avoid looking directly at the sun with the bare eye even for a very brief period of time.

Set of agreements on providing
services to Indian pilgrims signed

Monday, 25 May 2015

JEDDAH — The Tawafa Organization for the South Asian Pilgrims signed a set of agreements with a high-level Indian Central Haj Committee delegation for the provision of various services and facilities to 136,000 pilgrims at the holy sites. Raafat Badr, chairman of the board, represented the organization in signing the agreements at a ceremony held recently.

B.S. Mubarak, consul general of India, told Saudi Gazette that around 100,000 Indians will arrive this year for Haj under the government category while 36,000 pilgrims will come through the Private Tour Operators. India’s quota for Haj 2015 will remain the same as the previous year due to the ongoing massive expansion works of the Grand Mosque.

“It has been agreed that all Indian pilgrims will be provided with tents within the traditional boundaries of the tent city of Mina, and the Tawafa establishment will serve food to the pilgrims at the holy sites,” he said adding that food will be served to pilgrims at their lodgings in Madinah this year also.

Last year, Indian Central Haj Committee delegation signed agreements with six housing groups for accommodating Haj pilgrims, and serving food to pilgrims at their accommodation was one of the conditions of the agreements.

Mubarak also unveiled plans to introduce new reforms in the services and facilities being rendered to the pilgrims for this year’s Haj. Mashair train facilities will be provided to 100,000 Indian pilgrims.

The Indian delegation was comprised of Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, chairman of the long-term accommodation selection committee, Qaisar Shamim, chairman of Central Haj Committee of India, and Abdul Rashid Ansari, member of the selection committee.

‘Visit to Prophet’s Mosque highlight of Umrah trip’

Monday 18 May 2015

MADINAH: Indian pilgrim Khaled Abu Bakar has been to Saudi Arabia on many occasions in the past. He has performed Haj and Umrah many times.

“I am enjoying my trip to Makkah and Madinah this time,” he said. “I cannot describe my feelings in words when I visited the Prophet’s Mosque.”

According to him, only the chosen ones are able to make it to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. “It is an honor and blessing from Almighty Allah,” he said.

Abu Bakar spent some time in Saudi Arabia for employment. “I am very familiar with Saudi traditions and customs,” he said. “The Saudis are peaceful and good people.”

Their goodness, he said, is reflected in their hospitality. “They do all they can in the service of pilgrims,” he said. “They devote all their resources for the comfort of the pilgrims.”

He praised the all-round development in Saudi Arabia. “I saw the impressive and majestic expansion of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah,” he said.

While in Madinah, Abu Bakr visited several historical sites and famous mosques, including Quba and Qiblatain.

Abu Bakr spent around 65,000 Indian rupees on his 15-day Umrah package.

‘Performing Umrah was easy, smooth’

Monday 25 May 2015

MADINAH: Egyptian pilgrim Tal’at Salah had last visited Makkah and Madinah in 1998. On a second Umrah visit recently, he found a sea change in and around the Two Holy Mosques.

“I was extremely happy to perform Umrah at Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah. It was easy and smooth,” Salah told Arab News in Madinah.

He was on top of the Al Rumah Mountain at Uhud when he expressed his happiness about being able to do Umrah and about his experience.

Salah appreciated the development projects in the Two Holy cities. “The Kingdom has been always striving to enhance services in different fields, particularly for Haj and Umrah pilgrims. The expansion projects in Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah are proof in this regard.”

The pilgrim said he would spending most of his time at the Prophet’s Mosque and perform prayers there. He also visited many historical sites and famous mosques. The trip cost him around SR5,200, he added.

Water cuts in Madinah continue
Tuesday, 26 May 2015

MADINAH — Water shortages have resurfaced in Madinah and hit many areas in the holy city.

The residents are complaining that the water cuts are still prevailing six months after the main tanks were maintained and repaired.

They said the cuts were noticeable particularly in the neighborhoods of Al-Magharbah, Al-Bahar, Al-Mashrafiyah and Quran, which remained without water supplies for the fourth day in a row.

The residents said even the mosques were not spared and they had to obtain their potable water from the coolers on the streets.

Saleem Mohammed, a resident of Al-Magharbah district, said he had to go to the bathrooms of one of the mosques for water but could not find any.

“Me and some other congregates collected money and bought a water tanker to do our ablution,” he said.

He said a number of families used to send their children to go out to other neighborhoods to search for water.

Saleh Al-Jabalawi, director of the Directorate General of Water, said they were working hard to end the water crisis in the holy city.

He said a gradual pumping of water would cover all districts by rotation so that no area would remain without water for two successive days.

Jabalawi said the directorate was making efforts to raise the strategic storage capacity of Madinah to be able to meet the rising demand during the summer season and Ramadan.

He asked the citizens and expatriate to rationalize their water consumption until the crisis is over.

Makkah preps for Ramadan with color and light

Saudi Gazette

MAKKAH — The municipality has begun decorating Makkah’s streets and tunnels in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan.

Makkah Municipality’s Maintenance and Lighting Director Bandar Nouh said the fasting month is a “special occasion for Muslims and a very special occasion for Makkah.”

He said: “We already decorated 2,000 towers and poles and 500 palm trees with 1,700 of string lights measuring 7,000 meters.

“We even installed over 27,000 lights in various designs and 11,000 LED light decorations.”

He added the municipality paid special attention to the entrance of the city, Zamzam Square, Jeddah expressway and other main roads.

“The decorations extended to parking lots, parks and public places and tunnels including King Fahd Tunnel and Al-Faisaliyah Tunnel,” said Nouh. He added the pilgrims and visitors of the city would be astounded by the art displayed.

We treat the pilgrims as guests of the city, the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba.

“We want to make sure they enjoy their time in Makkah and have an ingrained memory of their visit.”

He also said Ramadan decorations are an old tradition of Makkah. “The decorations usually build up to the festivities of Eid. The municipality is not finished with the decorations and we are working hard to finish the work on time and have it ready for the people and visitors of Makkah.”

UAE design firm unveils winning
masterplan bid for Makkah

Tuesday, 26 May 2015

UAE-based X-Architects has won a competition to design a new masterplan for Makkah, Saudi Arabia - the holiest city in the world for Muslims.

Visitors to Makkah who perform the religious Hajj ritual are expected to spend three nights in the valley of Mina, in one of the 100,000 temporary, air-conditioned tents.

“The rough terrain of the Mina valley, the lack of space and the strict (religious) regulations not to build permanent structures inside Hima Al Masheir (the holy ritual territories) makes it difficult to provide sufficient services and facilities to the pilgrims during their permanence in Mina,” said a statement by the architects.

On the closest available site located adjacent to Hima Al Masheir, at the intersection of the most important pilgrimage routes, X-Architects proposed a dense, mixed-use development that provides accommodation, facilities, and services to the pilgrims during their stay in Mina.

“We proposed a complex network of pedestrian routes on different levels to enhance the movement during the “Nafrah”, the ritual of moving from Mina to Haram and vice versa,” the architects explained.

“The design allows for a smoother transition from Al Jamarat plaza to the existing pedestrian bridge and the future pedestrian tunnel.

“The surrounding roads have either been bridged or tunneled so as to strengthen the pedestrian tissue. This will solve the current situation of the constant crash between people and vehicles.”

The design is inspired by the surrounding mountains while the “urban form consists of staggered pixels of towers which react to various climatic conditions and provide a better view of the surrounding.

“The result is a smooth transition between different scales,” said the architects, adding that during the rest of the year, the active podium and the courtyards will become public spaces for the people of Mecca.

X-Architects worked alongside engineering consultants Buro Happold on the 821 square metre masterplan.

Egyptian pilgrims in limbo
can now travel to Kingdom

Thursday, 28 May 2015

CAIRO — The Ministry of Haj has permitted 85,000 Egyptian pilgrims to obtain pilgrimage visas after they were initially denied visa services because the local companies they were dealing with had committed numerous violations.

Head of the Egyptian Tourism Committee Basil Al-Sissi said the ministry had prohibited eight Saudi agencies from dealing with 200 Egyptian tourism companies.

He said: “A total of 85,000 Egyptian pilgrims were worried about not being able to go to the Kingdom this year due to the ministry’s new decision.

However, the ministry permitted the issuance of pilgrim visas for the Egyptian pilgrims.” He added Egypt is thankful for the ministry’s reaction.

“The ministry should form a committee to receive Egyptian pilgrims as they will have a lot of problems given the unstable condition of their travel and their official documents,” said Al-Sissi.

A source from the ministry said the ministry issued another decision stating all paperwork of Egyptian pilgrims shall be transferred and processed by other agencies.

The source said the ministry prohibited further cooperation between the specified agencies and companies due to multiple legal violations committed.

Iraqi-German retraces historic route
to Makkah in 300 days

Thursday, 28 May 2015 - 10 Shaban 1436

JEDDAH — After 300 days, an Iraqi-German man finally completed his historic walking pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah on May 17, capping a journey that covered 12 countries and 12,000 kilometers to help his sister’s brave fight against cancer.

Arriving at Jeddah in the early hours, Thair Abud trekked toward the main roads leading to the holy city and later checking in at the Anjum Hotel Makkah, which is owned and managed by the Abdul Latif Jameel Real Estate Investment Company.

Upon his arrival, Thair was cheered on by people who followed his journey from the start. Yousef Jameel, chairman of the Abdul Latif Jameel Real Estate Investment Company, praised the trekker’s efforts to fulfill his promise to his sister.

During his first day in Makkah, Abud performed his Umrah. He later met with senior officials of the hotel where he was given a special tour of the facilities.

Jameel said: “The completion of Thair’s journey demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and how you can achieve your goals by putting your mind and heart to it.

“We congratulate Thair on his arrival to the holy city of Makkah and may this exceptional journey serve as an inspiration for all.”

Born to an Iraqi father and a German mother, Abud’s first journey covered a walk that stretched from Austria to Santiago, Spain.

The effort was made in tribute to his sister, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Upon fulfilling his first promise, his sibling narrated how she kept track of his journey and forgot about the pain she was suffering from.

Inspired by this, Abud then made a second offering — promising to walk all the way to Makkah if his sister could be healthy again.

His journey, documented on his blog entitled “On the Way Today", started from Graz, Austria, on July 25, 2014.

He followed an old pilgrimage route from Austria to Makkah and passed through Europe from mosque to mosque.

During his travels, he came across many strangers who sought to help him out along the way. Traveling at a walking pace of four kilometers per hour and carrying around 14 kilos of baggage each day, Abud has already used and replaced six pairs of shoes.

In his latest blog entry, he acknowledged everyone who provided support and assistance in making the walking pilgrimage a success.
