Iran suspends Umrah pilgrimages
over unfounded report

Tuesday 14 April 2015

TEHRAN: Iran suspended all Umrah pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia on Monday amid growing diplomatic tensions between the two countries, state television reported.

Iran’s Culture Ministry made the decision over alleged abuse suffered by two male Iranian pilgrims traveling through Jeddah airport in March, the station reported.

A representative of Iran’s top leader on Haj affairs downplayed the case, saying the pilgrims weren’t abused, the Fars reported.

“In the incident, no abuse has happened and the two policemen who attempted abuse were identified and detained by Saudi police,” Ali Ghaziasgar was quoted as saying.

Non-Haj ministries asked
to vacate Holy Sites’ premises

Tuesday, 14 April 2015

MAKKAH — Emir of Makkah Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has asked 73 ministries and government departments not directly connected to Haj services to vacate their premises and transfer outside the Holy Sites.

The emir, who is also an adviser to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, chaired a meeting of the Central Haj Committee (CHC) in Makkah on Sunday.

The transfer of the ministries' premises will free up about a million square meters that will be used to provide more accommodation facilities to pilgrims in the Holy Sites.

Prince Khaled asked the government departments to hand over their premises to the Haj Ministry. Under the emir’s instructions, 25 ministries and government departments will vacate 270 sites occupying 191,718 sq. meters in Mina that will then be used to build more tents for pilgrims.

A total of 35 ministries and government departments will vacate their 121 offices in Arafat, freeing up 576,477 sq. meters, while another 13 will leave their 27 offices in Muzdalifah and allow 177,436 sq. meters to be used for accommodating pilgrims.

A committee headed by the governorate will supervise the transfer of the ministries and the handover of the vacated areas to be used for the construction of more tents in the Holy Sites.

The committee comprises representatives from the Haj and finance ministries in addition to the Control and Investigation Board (CIB) and the Makkah Municipality.

The CHC also heard a report about the current Umrah season that began on Nov. 23 and will continue until the end of Ramadan.

According to the report, more than 4.4 million Umrah visas were issued so far. It said about 2.5 million pilgrims will be arriving via King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, 816,111 through Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah and 76,378 via Yanbu Airport. According to the report, about 1.3 million pilgrims will be arriving by land.

New stopover in Jerusalem for Turkish pilgrims

The Dome of the Rock

April 14, 2015

Turkey today is scheduled to launch pilgrimage trips for the Muslim faithful with a landmark stopover in Jerusalem.

The first flight for umrah, or lesser pilgrimage in Islam, with a stopover in Jerusalem was scheduled to be launched today by Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (DİB).

The inclusion of Jerusalem to the itinerary of Turkish pilgrims comes at a time of strained relations between Turkey and Israel.

The DİB has announced earlier that Jerusalem would be added to places pilgrims can visit following a high demand from would-be pilgrims seeking to visit holy sites of Islam in the ancient city.

Some 149 people were scheduled to leave on two flights from Istanbul's Atatürk Airport today. Pilgrims will stay in Jerusalem for three days before heading to Saudi Arabia, where they will stay for 11 days for the culmination of the pilgrimage at Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam. Umrah is not compulsory for Muslims but it is highly recommended for those who can afford it. It is not among the pillars of Islam unlike Hajj, the annual pilgrimage every able-bodied Muslim is obliged to perform, but it is very popular among the faithful in Turkey.

Jerusalem is home to the al-Aqsa mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam, which was replaced by the Kaaba as qibla, the direction all Muslims are obliged to turn while praying. Muslims' access to the site is often subject to severe restrictions by the Israeli government. It is not clear whether Turkish pilgrims would be allowed into the mosque where severe clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian faithful seeking to pray at the site are common. Jerusalem also houses tombs of the prophets İbrahim, İshak, Yakup and Davud or Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David, as well as Salman al-Farsi, a loyal companion of the Prophet Muhammad and Rabia al-Adawiyya, a renowned Muslim mystic.

Like umrah, visiting Jerusalem is not compulsory in Islam but the al-Aqsa mosque is highly revered among Muslims, as it is also believed to be the site of the Prophet Muhammad's ascension to heaven.

Turkish officials told media outlets that Israel reacted positively to the Turkish pilgrims' visit to Jerusalem, as long as they are eligible for visas from Israel.

DİB President Mehmet Görmez has recently said that Jerusalem has long been a part of umrah in Turkish history, although it is excluded from itineraries at present. "We abandoned Jerusalem and handed it to another country, but Jerusalem was not theirs, it belongs to Muslims," Görmez said, referring to Israel. "Jerusalem is the home of prophets and the sacred. Our ancestors had always paid a visit to Jerusalem while traveling to Kaaba, but we neglected it. It was wrong," Görmez said.

Jordan will provide access to Jerusalem for Turkish pilgrims and they will be transferred to the Israeli-occupied city via Amman.

Turkey has strained relations with Israel after the infamous raid on a Turkish vessel carrying activists to Gaza under the Israeli blockade and criticism of Israel by the government leaders over attacks on Palestinians. The inclusion of Jerusalem onto the itinerary of pilgrims dates back 10 years when Turkey and Israel had relatively good relations. The Israeli Ministry of Tourism was working to promote Jerusalem as an additional pilgrimage destination, according to Turkish media outlets, the year before relations went downhill.

It is not known whether Jerusalem will be included in state-sponsored Hajj trips for the faithful in Turkey.

Jerusalem was Ottoman territory until 1918 and even after its capture by British forces that year, it remained part of the pilgrimage for Turks for decades. The Arab-Israeli war in 1967 forced pilgrims to change their course.

Turks fly to Jerusalem as part of pilgrimage

15 April 2015

A group of 154 Turkish people left Istanbul on Wednesday for Jerusalem as a part of religious umrah pilgrimage, which has been added to Turkey's umrah program for the first time in over 90 years.

Dozens of people gathered at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport to see their families and relatives off during their trips to holy sites. The plane of the first 78 people of the group left Istanbul in the early morning while the others departed at around noon.

Their trip came after Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs announced in February that they had included Jerusalem in the umrah program, at the request of the public.

Jerusalem is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which for Muslims represents the world's third holiest site after the holy mosques of Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina.

"I read this new umrah program in a newspaper and I liked it so much when I learned Jerusalem has been included in the program," Uğur Künefe, a taxi driver in the southern Antalya province, told Anadolu Agency. "Thank God I am here right now to go to three holy places. I am very happy and excited. It is my first time."

Retired hotel manager in the southern Antalya province, İbrahim Özen, 64, heads to Mecca and Medina for the fifth time, as a part of the umrah and the hajj, but it is his first pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

"Together with my wife, we always planned to go to Jerusalem but we just could not go there before. Thanks to this new program, we will be able to see the holy places there."

Esma Dogan, 18, a student in the southern Adana province, is one of the youngest people in the group.

"I wonder about al-Aqsa Mosque so much. I will be very happy when I see the holy sites there.

Makkah Clock Tower

Capturing the construction phase

A view of the Clock Tower under construction.
Saturday, 11 April 2015

At a height of 607 meters, it stands as the world’s third tallest building, dwarfed only by 632-meter-high Shanghai Tower and Dubai’s 828-meter-high Burj Khalifa.

Visitors to the holy city of Makkah have been wonderstruck by the stately magnificence of the Clock Tower, which holds numerous world records.

The $15 billion project, which took almost eight years to complete, is not only an architectural marvel but also a testimony to the Herculean efforts which went into its design, logistics and construction.

All of this has been captured on camera by SL Rasch, a German company, which also designed the tallest building in the complex.

Omer Faruk Aksoy, director of photography of the Clock Tower project, recalls the days and nights when he and his crew members took many life-threatening risks to film and shoot the various stages of the construction of the Makkah Clock Tower.

“Sometimes we were shooting in the rain, sometimes on chilly days, sometimes under a searing hot summer sun when the temperature often touched 50 degree Centigrade in Makkah,” Aksoy told Saudi Gazette during an exclusive interview in Jeddah recently.

It was a prestigious assignment for Aksoy, a celebrated photographer who has worked on “Haj: The Journey of a Lifetime” for BBC, filmed a documentary on Haj for the Discovery Channel and participated in an exhibition on Makkah and Madinah in London.

The task was Herculean, and so was the responsibility given to him personally by Sheikh Bakr Binladin, Chairman of the Saudi Binladin Group which built the tower.

The crew members had to be Muslims to work in Makkah, Aksoy said, adding that SL Rasch selected crews from Germany and Turkey for the project.

“We had to go up about 400 meters every day which took about 45 minutes from the makeshift lifts. Sometimes we used to go up on a platform fixed to a crane.

If it was a windy day, we had to postpone the shoot,” said Aksoy, a Turkish national, who has won several international photography and videography awards.

A panoramic view of Makkah.

Recalling an incident, he said that once they were filming atop a platform fixed to a crane some 400 meters above the ground, when they found that the screw linking the crane to the platform was becoming loose.

“We said our prayers and prepared for the worst. But the crane operator maintained his cool and slowly brought the platform to the floor of one of the stories of the under-construction tower.”

Everything linked to the project was enormous, Aksoy said. The clock, the largest in diameter in the world, is visible from 25 kilometers away.

Each face of the clock measures 46 meters in diameter and is decorated with thousands of gold-plated mosaics and more than 98 million pieces of glass mosaics.

The four faces of the clock are illuminated by more than two million LED lights. The top of the Clock Tower has a 94-meter spire with a 23-meter-high golden crescent.

The 35-ton mosaic gold crescent was constructed by a company in Dubai. Many of the heavy components of the Clock Tower were made abroad and shipped to Makkah.

Aksoy and his crew used helicopters to film and shoot the caravans of trucks carrying these heavy materials through the desert.

They were the first Muslim crew to use the world’s most sophisticated Cineflex HD camera, said the photographer, who has shot several TV commercials, documentaries and the famous Saudi TV comedy serial “Tash Matash.”

But this gigantic project was different. “Often I said to myself, this is the last time I am coming to the tower to shoot.

I can’t handle it anymore. I’m not young any more. The conditions are very hard. I will quit. But the next day I forgot everything,” said Aksoy, who is married to a Saudi doctor.

11 rescued Pakistanis perform
Umrah, thank Saudi Arabia

SAFE ARRIVAL: The Pakistanis who were evacuated from Yemen come out
of the PNS Shamsheer warship at the Jazan port on Tuesday.
Thursday 16 April 2015

Eleven Pakistanis were evacuated from Yemen on Tuesday, and they left for home the next day after performing Umrah.

The group, including women and children, arrived at the Jazan port in the Pakistani naval ship PNS Shamsheer and left for Makkah by road. They left for Pakistan in a PIA flight on Wednesday evening.

The evacuated Pakistanis thanked Saudi Arabia for extending all possible cooperation and assistance. They were received by the Pakistan Consulate representative at Jazan port. As a goodwill gesture, Saudi Arabia issued visa to the evacuees, enabling them to perform Umrah.

The group thanked Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for their efforts in getting them out of the worn-torn country. They also thanked Consul General Aftab Ahmed Khokhar and his staff and the Pakistan Navy.

Sohail Ali Khan, press consul at the Pakistan Consulate, told Arab News that the group reached Karachi Wednesday evening.

He said that the consulate, as per Sharif’s instructions, looked after the group and made their stay, travel and transit comfortable.

Khan said that a delegation comprising Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab Province; Sartaj Aziz, adviser to the prime minister on national security and foreign affairs; and Aijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, foreign secretary, arrived in Jeddah for consultations with senior Saudi officials on Wednesday. The delegation was to meet with Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal later.

Cops accused of molesting
pilgrims being investigated

Image illustration purpose only.
Wednesday 15 April 2015

Authorities said on Tuesday they are taking legal action against two police officers accused of sexually assaulting a pair of Iranian male pilgrims. The alleged incident had angered Tehran, which suspended Umrah pilgrimages on Monday.

Proceedings began after allegations of “sexual harassment against two teenage Iranian victims” at Jeddah airport surfaced, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The suspects have been referred to an investigation and necessary procedures will be followed, the spokesman said, adding that Iran’s ambassador has been informed of the development.

Iran's culture minister said on Monday that his country has suspended pilgrimages to holy places in the Kingdom “until the criminals are tried and punished.”

Iranian media reported that the incident occurred as the duo prepared to return home after performing Umrah late in March. About 500,000 Iranians perform Umrah annually.

The spokesman said the Kingdom's Shariah legal system “will ensure the strictest penalties for perpetrators of these types of crimes, which are condemned by all sections of Saudi society.”

French Marseille researchers oversee the Hajj

The Marseille researchers could create, in Saudi Arabia,
an observatory of infectious diseases

During the Hajj, Mecca surge sees millions of devotees with the risks involved in respiratory diseases.
14/04/2015

May Allah bless Marseille! "They may be few, among the Saudi religious leaders, to address this prayer to the Almighty, in April. It is that Marseille sends its expertise in the fight against infectious diseases of the pilgrims of the world (Muslim) during the famous hajj, the pilgrimage.

It is known that Marseille doctors see the faithful "upstream" before they go to Mecca. But this time, Marseille wants to be on site in Saudi Arabia. Visited by the Marseille Professor Remi Charrel, a few days ago, to create a kind of observatory of respiratory diseases.

Marseille sanitary partner of Saudi Arabia?

"Mecca can be a zone of emergence of a virus, says Professor Didier Raoult collaborating in the operation. In other words, it can be a place where you will discover the virus that could happen to us." Therefore, Marseille can become a good partner health of Saudi Arabia. "Every year we do 150 samples from the faithful who go to Mecca from Marseille. In addition, we made contact with the director of the Saudi Health who has asked us to do a large-scale study of 1 200 people, the outward and return, at the Saudi airport. "

A study that led to ... 100 000 samples and showed that respiratory diseases are rampant around the Kaaba, the large cubic building in Mecca, against which clump together nearly three million of worshippers.

"But that is not related only to Mecca. All the great mass gatherings are concerned. When is the Europride, people from all over exchange microbes." In Mecca, the virus takes many forms. "In our study, it was found that there were cases of influenza, says Professor Raoult. We could send vaccines, but the problem is that in times of pilgrimage around September, they are not yet available because here in November we vaccinate against winter flu. The idea would be to import the vaccine in the southern hemisphere where it is marketed in June. Send from our place is not possible. "

"We are the strongest in Europe"

Generally, infectious diseases do not cause too much concern. Except when dealing with Coronavirus Mers ... which would come from camels and causes acute respiratory problems that can lead to death. Marseille should be able to find its place in the Middle East, especially that research will be develop here under the direction of its specialists, Professor Raoult, Remi Charelle and also Philippe Gautret, in charge of Travel Medicine and Philippe Parola, Professor turned to infectious diseases.

With La Timone and North Hospital, Marseille is already a bastion of infectious diseases who will be even more powerful when all will be grouped together in 2016 at the Infectiopôle (under construction) at La Timone.

"I think we are the strongest in Europe," comments Didier Raoult who will lead this Infectiopôle. And at whom the mayor has promised a financial "extension" to strengthen the research. We will perhaps bless Gaudin towards Mecca.

"A very stressful stay"

Dahmani Ali manages the mosque of La Capelette (Marseille 10th), one of the largest in Marseille where meet regularly civil authorities to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Ali made the pilgrimage to Mecca. He says. "This is the fifth pillar of Islam that a Muslim must do if he has the physical and financial resources. In this regard, the stay, which lasts between three and four weeks, costs around 5000 €. But the travel agency then takes care of everything. Before leaving, we get vaccinated against meningitis, which is mandatory. Once in Mecca, there are several rites to be observed, the Umrah which is to perform seven laps around the Kaaba. We redo seven laps a few days later at the hajj.

We must go to Mina to stone the devil on the day of Eid. We walk a lot. The pilgrimage is very demanding. That's why you have to be healthy. It is true that around the Kaaba, one can have health problems. You see a lot of faithfuls wearing masks to protect themselves. They are nearly two million to turn at the same time around the Kaaba. Family searches for father gone
missing after Umrah

Friday 17 April 2015

The children of a senior citizen from Pakistan who went missing during his umrah trip last year are desperately searching for him in the Kingdom.

Rao Bashir Ahmed had come to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah last year and never returned home.

His son, Taswar Ahmed, is in the Kingdom for a second since their father’s disappearance. Taswar's sisters, Kulsum Bibi and Shameed Bibi, are also here. They have requested the Pakistan Consulate to help locate him.

“My father’s passport number is KL-1161681. On May 6, 2014, he reached Makkah and then moved to Madinah with his group. He went to Makkah again with his group on May 30 and went missing,” Taswar Ahmed told Arab News.

Taswar said that the members of his group searched for his father, but in vain. They finally returned to Pakistan without his father.

“One Aftab, an agent of the local travel agency, which had organized the tour, once told us that he found our father. We asked him to put him up in a hotel and we sent a ticket to him. Unfortunately, our father went missing again,” he said.

Taswar said that fresh attempts to contact Aftab failed.

On September 10, 2014, he came on visit visa to Saudi Arabia but could not find him.

Tahsem-ul-Haq, welfare consul, said that the consulate will try its best to locate Bashir Ahmed. The consulate has sent a request to the foreign office in this regard, he said, adding that they had tried last year, but could not find him.

“We have contacted the representative of the travel firm in Makkah and also sent some of our people there. Hopefully, we will get information from different departments about the missing person,” he said.

A representative of the umrah firm, Atiyha Al-Malki told Arab News that Bashir Ahmed the company staff tried to find Bashir Ahmed in different hospitals and police stations, but did not get any information about him.
He said no efforts will be spared in finding Bashir Ahmed.

Tajikistan bans hajj pilgrimage
for young Muslims

Hajj ban for younger than 35

Many in the Central Asian nation believe the ban is an attempt to prevent young Tajiks
from developing radical ideas and joining extremist groups such as ISIL.
14 April 2015

Tajikistan has banned the hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, for citizens younger than 35.

Many in the Central Asian nation believe the ban is an attempt to prevent young Tajiks from developing radical ideas and joining extremist groups such as ISIL.

It comes a month after President Emomali Rahmon called for a long-term development "concept" based on secularism.

The government's Committee for Religious and Cultural Issues announced the hajj restriction on April 13.

The committee said it is intended to give older Muslims a greater opportunity to undertake the hajj, as Saudi Arabia limits the number of pilgrims from each country annually.

Rahmon's government has repeatedly called for the strengthening of secular principles in the mostly Muslim country of 8.5 million.

Every year Tajikistan's committee for religious affairs compiles lists of citizens willing to observe the annual hajj to the sacred Muslim cities of Mecca and Medina, located in Saudi Arabia, which annually issues the hajj quotas for foreign and domestic pilgrims.

In previous years, up to 8,000 citizens of Tajikistan, which has a population of around eight million people, completed the hajj. However, Saudi Arabia, seeking to counter the hajj stampede, decided to reduce these quotas this year.

"This year, only 6,300 quotas have been issued by Saudi Arabia to Tajikistan," the committee said.

Tajikistan has banned headscarves for schoolgirls, barred minors from mosques, and forced thousands of students to return home from Islamic schools abroad in recent months amid reports that many Tajiks have joined fighters in Iraq and Syria.
