Constantly late airport buses irk Umrah pilgrims

King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah
Thursday, 05 February 2015

MAKKAH — Umrah pilgrims are reportedly gathering for hours in front of their hotels waiting for scheduled buses to take them to King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, the Makkah newspaper reported.

Among them are sick and elderly visitors standing with worn out faces, anxiously waiting for the coaches to arrive.

Some pilgrims have to wait for hours until their buses come to pick them up. In addition, they do not have an appropriate waiting area.

Large groups of pilgrims assemble with their suitcases in front of their hotel entrances until the delayed buses arrive.

One Umrah performer, Mohammed Sadiq, said: “Our departure time is assigned to us since we received our Umrah permits.”

He added that after completing their rites, he and his fellow pilgrims waited for a few days until the scheduled date to leave.

They checked out of the hotel and stood waiting for the 10 a.m. bus. Hours later the bus pulled up, greeting frustrated passengers.

Among them were elderly visitors and others suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

Another visitor, Jamal Abdulraheem, complained about the dangerous situation pilgrims are in because they are waiting near busy traffic. He said: “There needs to be better organization and emergency buses on standby to avoid this inconvenience.”

Many wait impatiently, fearing they will miss their flight back home. Others pass the time longing for their families.

Gharam Al-Ghamdi, an employee from a Makkah hotel, stated that the large crowds of pilgrims are reflecting negatively on hotels because they gather in front of their entrances.

He added this was a problem they face during the Haj and Umrah seasons every year.

According to Haj Ministry official Abdulaziz Damanhouri, Umrah organizers are supposed to avoid this situation and allow hotel residents to wait indoors.

Pilgrims are not allowed to arrive at airports earlier than the scheduled time. In addition, hotels should not release the luggage until the coaches arrive.

“The ministry is working on better solutions such as setting up workshops and other awareness campaigns to solve this recurrent problem,” he said.

IIROSA launches Umrah trip for orphans

200 Arab orphans perform Umrah

Friday 6 February 2015

The International Islamic Relief Organization, Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) recently arranged an Umrah trip for 200 orphans from Jordan.

Ehssan Saleh Taieb, secretary-general of IIROSA, said such trips enhance and develop positive behavior in children who have been deprived of basic physical and emotional necessities.

The secretary-general congratulated Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman for taking over the reins of the country.

“I wish success to King Salman and the team he has appointed for the good of the Arab and Islamic nations, and wish him all the luck to carry out his duties well,” he said.

“IIROSA not only ensures that the orphans receive food, shelter, health and educational assistance but also tries to address their needs through a variety of cultural activities and occasional leisure trips,” he said.

Abdul Karim Al-Musa, director of the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) representative office in Jordan, said: “We don’t just take care of their physical wellbeing; these children deserve to be happy too, and IIROSA tries its best to help them to enjoy and have the fun they deserve.”

He said, “We are thankful to the sponsors for taking care of the orphans and helping to improve their living conditions.”

JEDDAH — The International Islamic Relief Organization, Saudi Arabia (IIROSA), arranged an Umrah trip for 200 orphans from the Levant region (encompassing Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria) with the help of its representative office in Jordan.

The trip also included visits to Madinah, IIROSA headquarters in Jeddah, Okaz newspaper, amusement parks, cruising at Marsa Al-Ahlam and also a meeting with some of the orphans’ sponsors.

Ehssan Saleh Taieb, secretary-general of IIROSA, said such trips help develop orphans’ characters in a positive way.

He said: “IIROSA not only ensures that the orphans receive food, shelter, health and educational help, but also tries to cover the needs of orphans from all aspects through a variety of cultural activities like occasional leisure trips.”

Abdul Karim Al-Musa, director of the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) representative office in Jordan, said: “We don’t just take care of their physical well-being. Instead, these children deserve to be happy too, for which IIROSA tries its best to help them enjoy and have fun.

“We are thankful to the sponsors for the care of orphans and for helping them improve their living conditions.”

Okaz newspaper gave each of them the first edition of the paper as a memento.

All the children enjoyed the trip and had lots of fun during their stay. Discussing the death of King Abdullah, Taieb conveyed his condolences to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, the government and Saudi people.

He said: “King Abdullah made major contributions to the development of the Kingdom and we are extremely grateful for his generous humanitarian and developmental support to IIROSA. His leadership will be remembered not only throughout the Kingdom but worldwide.”

Congratulating King Salman on his accession, he said: “I wish all the success to King Salman Bin Abdulaziz and the team he appointed for the good of the Arab and Islamic nations, and wish him all the luck to carry out his duties well.”

Makkah imam flays IS savagery

Worshippers circle the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
Saturday 7 February 2015

The immolation of a Jordanian pilot by the Islamic State group has brought a unified outcry from top religious scholars across the Muslim world.

Shaikh Saud Al-Shuraim, imam and khateeb at Makkah’s Grand Mosque, criticized the savagery faced by captured pilot Maaz Al-Kasaasbeh at the hands of the terrorists of the Islamic State group.

He said there are chapters in the Hadith books of Al-Nasai and Al-Baihaqi on the ban on burning a polytheist after he is defeated. “If it is the right accorded by Islam to a disbeliever and polytheist not to be burned alive when captured, then, a Muslim has a greater right not to be burned or tortured,” the Imam said.

He pointed out that the flaw Muslims these days is the corruption of religious values, while the real knowledge is missing. “Only a man steeped in knowledge and wisdom can bring about any kind of reform.”

Al-Shuraim said: “No other human has suffered from his own people the kind of persecution, physical and mental torture and humiliation as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).”

He highlighted the compassion of the Last Prophet who, once being subjected to the worst kind of oppression by the people of Makkah, asked the Angel Gabriel to forgive them.

He said some Muslims have drifted too far away from the values advocated by the Prophet of Mercy. “In the Holy Qur’an, Almighty Allah commanded the Muslims to emulate the Prophet, by saying: “You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the praise of Allah”, said the imam.

“Caliph Abu Bakr ordered his soldiers, when they went to fight in other countries, not to kill old men, small children, women, sick people or priests,” the imam said stressing the real values of Islam.

Returns from Haj, Umrah
to hit SR48b by 2020

Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah
Sunday, 08 February 2015

MADINAH — Participants in the Madinah Forum for Labor Market and Employment expect business generated by Haj and Umrah to reach SR6.22 billion following the completion of the expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

They expect the returns to hit SR48 billion by 2020, the Arabic daily Al-Madinah reported.

The Madinah Forum had concluded its deliberations recently after two sessions that dealt with eight themes.

Participants came up with several recommendations including the establishment of a specialist center for human development and training, studies for the labor market and employment in the Madinah region in coordination with the authorities concerned. They include the ministries of labor, civil service and planning and national economy and the Human Resources Development Fund.

The Madinah Chamber of Commerce and Industry will carry out the role of coordinator at the new center.

A working team will be formed and it will include members with specializations and experience from the private sector including all sectors of the labor market and employment in the region as well as officials from government departments concerned with organizing the labor market. This will be a joint effort so a special strategy that is in conformity with the region's labor market can be employed.

The Madinah governorate will organize the team with participation of the chamber.

Business sectors will be encouraged to employ more women and give them priority in hotel industry, managerial jobs and marketing. Women should be provided necessary privacy as required by Islamic teachings.

Plan afoot to arrange better
services for Umrah visitors

Monday 9 February 2015

The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) is working on a plan to license buildings which will accommodate Umrah pilgrims and visitors with the aim to improve services for the guests of God.

Hamad Al-Semaeel, acting vice president at the SCTA, said the commission is working in collaboration with investors and government partners to provide better services to pilgrims who stay in these buildings.

The commission will announce the minimum specifications for hospitality, in addition to safety, security and public health to investors in the administration of these buildings.

The commission intends to hold a workshop for operators to explain licensing requirements for operating these buildings and to take note of any issues.
Al-Semaeel appreciated the cooperation of the Ministry of Haj and government and private partners in reaching this decision.

He confirmed that the Council of Ministers’ resolution to grant the licensing of these buildings to the commission reflects the government’s interest to support national tourism, regulate the tourism sector and restructure it to become an important economic sector.

He said that the supervision of hotels and tourist facilities was transferred to the commission five years ago, a move which has achieved positive results in restructuring and regulating the market.

“The decision reflects the importance the government places on the need to provide the best services to the guests of God including comfort and safety,” he said, adding that the commission gives special importance to the pilgrim cities of Makkah and Madinah due to their sacred status.

Alsamaeel also hoped that these decisions will reflect the generous nature of the Saudi people and their government.

He said authorities specialized in licensing are now trying to develop procedures by introducing electronic linkages. Omar bin Abdul Aziz Al-Mubarak, director general of the licensing directorate at the SCTA, called on investors and operators in pilgrim accommodation to speed up the procedures of obtaining their licenses to start operations.

He said that the commission is looking to improve the services and gain customer satisfaction which can only be realized by activating partnerships between the government and private sectors, operators and organizers of tourist activities.

The Council of Ministers approved in its session on Monday held under the presidency of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman the SCTA’s obtaining of licenses for buildings which can be used to accommodate pilgrims on condition that they meet the requirements of the municipality and civil defense.

Additionally, the hotel operations have to meet the minimum requirements of hotel operations approved by the commission.

SR150,000 for pieces of debris from Holy Mosques

Monday, 09 February 2015

JEDDAH — Pieces of debris from the Two Holy Mosques as a result of ongoing expansion projects are being smuggled into black markets and sold for up to SR150,000 to historians, collectors, and enthusiasts, Al-Eqtisadiyah reported on Sunday.

The General Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques reported that it had uploaded the data of all of mosque artifacts in its systems to preserve their historical locations despite current and future expansion and renovation plans.

The general presidency’s spokesman Ahmad Al-Mansouri said the data of all of the mosques’ artifacts including the pillars were recorded. He said: “We began uploading the data since the expansion project of 2006. The general presidency opened an exhibition in 1999 called the Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques Architecture next to the Kaaba Kiswa Factory (that manufactures the black cloth covering the Kaaba). We are now finalizing expansion plans so the new artifacts can be included.”

Sources revealed expatriates working on the expansion projects were responsible for the black market. One source said: “They sell the pieces to accomplices for cheap prices and then the buyers resell the pieces to collectors and Islamic history and art enthusiasts. They do it with such discretion that the missing pieces are unnoticed.”

A seller in the black market revealed that he gets his pieces from the mosques’ storage facilities.

He said: “Every piece has a different value. For example, a piece from the Zamzam water well that was built in 1954 by King Saud Bin Abdulaziz can reach up to SR6,000.

“Another example is the copper piece that is believed to be the cover over Prophet Ibrahim’s footprint and is valued at SR150,000.”

He added that his buyers are usually historians, collectors and Islamic culture, history and art enthusiasts. “These ruins date back to the Ottoman Empire and have the history of the Saudi Arabian Kingdom. To many, these ruins are historical records representing the eras the Holy Mosques went through.”

‘No black market’ in Grand Mosque relics

DENIAL: Contrary to claims, even columns removed during an expansion of the Grand Mosque 10 years ago
are safe and on display elsewhere in Makkah, says a spokesman of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs.
Tuesday 10 February 2015

The Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs has rejected reports that rare antiquities found during the expansion of the Grand Mosque has been selling for thousands of riyals on the black market.

This comes in the wake of revelations in the local media that items have been sold to collectors for between SR6,000 and SR150,000.

Ahmed Al-Mansouri, spokesman for the presidency, said recently that this is not possible because all rare relics found are recorded and tracked by a Geographic Information System (GIS) system.

He said the system has also kept track of all the rare items found and removed from the mosque during expansion work carried out 10 years ago. This includes old columns built years ago, which are currently on display locally, he said.

He said this exhibition was set up 16 years ago adjacent to the plant that produces the kiswa, or covering of the Kaaba. It has been expanded many times over the years, Al-Mansouri said.

However, Aleqtesadiah, a sister publication of Arab News, has found that some workers have been selling items to dealers. One dealer, who preferred anonymity, claimed that he has original pieces from the Grand Mosque that were sold to him during the expansion operations.

The dealer claimed that the items came directly from the warehouses of the presidency and contractors, and other people who have great interest in Makkah’s history.

The dealer said that he has priced certain items."For instance, one tile from the basement of the Zamzam Well, which was laid down in 1954 during the expansion project undertaken by the late King Saud, is worth SR6,000.”

“But the copper piece, which is believed to be the cover of Prophet Ibrahim’s grave, is worth SR150,000. Another piece engraved with the phrase ‘The Gate of King Abdul Aziz’ is also worth SR150,000,” said the dealer.

He said that a market has been created for these items because many are rare, dating back to the Rashidun caliphates and the rule of the Ottomans.

Omani pilgrim: Madinah is rich
in historical treasures

Quba Mosque, Madinah

Monday 9 February 2015

As pilgrims flock to Madinah after performing Umrah in Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah, they make sure to visit famous historical and archaeological sites in Madinah.

Arab News met an Omani pilgrim, Ali Rashid Al-Matani, who has performed Umrah tens of times earlier. Yet, every time he comes, he witnesses the expanding development in the city.

“I witness the change everytime I am here in Madinah, especially the rising number of the pilgrims,” Al-Matani said.

He said this increase comes in light of the Saudi government’s keenness to provide all means of comfort and reassurance for pilgrims and visitor to the Kingdom.

Al-Matani, a journalist, came here with a number of Omani journalists willing to perform Umrah, visit the Prophet’s Mosque and have the honor of spending some quality time here.

On their schedule is to visit the known archaeological and historical sites and mosques, such as the Quba Mosque, Al-Qiblatain Mosque and the seven mosques.

“Madinah has a rich history of archaeological and historical treasures,” he said
“This is a great and pleasant trip in which we didn’t face any problems,” he told Arab News.

Technology sets right prayer
direction in many mosques

Tuesday, 10 February 2015

TAIF — Many residents of Taif who depend on Google Earth to work out the direction of the Qiblah (the direction of the Kaaba toward which Muslims face when praying) were surprised to find most local mosques were facing the wrong way when holding prayers, Makkah reported.

Awad Al-Thubaiti said before such technology became popular, people never questioned the direction of the Qiblah in mosques.

The only time when people had to work out the direction of the Qiblah was when they had to pray outside of the mosques.

Al-Thubaiti said: “New hi-tech methods have provided us with a more accurate calculation of the Qiblah direction through satellite technology.

“The most widely used of these methods is Google Earth.”

He added that Google Earth is used to define the direction of the Qiblah by locating the Kaaba and the mosque the user is in.

The user would then draw a line from the mosque he is in to the Kaaba to determine the Qiblah’s direction.

Al-Thubaiti said: “Often the estimations don’t match the Qiblah direction determined in the mosques.

“The difference differs from mosque to mosque, but the most accurate of them all is Abdullah Bin Abbas Mosque.”

Taif Ministry of Islamic Affairs Director Abdulaziz Al-Mudara said the Board of Senior Ulema (scholars) has issued a fatwa (religious edict) in 1988 stating that facing the Qiblah in prayers is not an accurate measure but a close approximation.

The fatwa clarified that the most important thing for a correct prayer is for the Muslim to be facing the right direction.

However, people believed the ministry’s response was dismissive and was too heavily reliant on a 27-year-old fatwa over modern and accurate technology.

In response, Al-Mudara said the ministry does use new accurate and specialized technology in determining the direction of the Qiblah.

He said: “The devices we have are more accurate than Google Earth.

“If we found any discrepancies in the current and new calculations of the Qiblah’s direction, we will simply readjust the direction of the mosque’s prayer mats.

“The same fatwa also said that if a mosque had the wrong Qiblah direction, there is no need to demolish it and only change the direction its prayer mats points toward.”

Wednesday 11 February 2015

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has called for rain-seeking prayers in all parts of the Kingdom on Thursday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the king also called upon citizens to seek the pardon of the Almighty for their sins, engage in righteous deeds and work for removing the difficulties of other people.

“We hope all able individuals shall join the rain-seeking prayer, following in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,” a Royal Court statement said, hoping that Allah would accept the prayers.
