Eight detours set to ease traffic at Grand Mosque

All contracted and hotel vehicles now have to use the tunnels to take passengers to Bab Ali courtyard.
Thursday 15 January 2015

Makkah’s traffic department has approved eight detours to ease congestion close to the Grand Mosque caused by huge numbers of Umrah pilgrims and visitors.

Col. Salman bin Mayous Al-Jumaihi, director of the traffic department, said the measures have been taken to prevent pilgrims heading to the mosque’s southern courtyards, where construction is currently underway.

He said that traffic coming from Azizia is being redirected to the tunnel of the small market in Makkah. All contracted and hotel vehicles now have to use the tunnels to take passengers to Bab Ali courtyard. Those coming from Kadi in the direction of Ibrahim Al-Khalil Street, especially on Fridays, would have to use the same route.

“Vehicles allocated to transport Umrah pilgrims will be redirected through the northern courtyard and ease congestion at the Bin Laden traffic lights,” he said. Those traveling from Al-Maabda and Al-Jubaiza Street will be redirected to Al-Ghaza station, and Shaab Amer courtyard. He urged Umrah pilgrims and hotel owners to abide by these instructions.

He said a detailed plan has been drafted in cooperation with all local authorities. There is a ban on parking in the central area and underpasses, and people are encouraged to use public transport where possible. There is coordination taking place with the municipality to allocate parking for taxi cabs in the central area, including special parking areas for people with disabilities in Al-Shabeika, Al-Ghaza and Bab Al-Malik to facilitate easy access to the central area and the Grand Mosque.

He said parking bays have been allocated for taxi cabs in Ibrahim Al-Khalil Street, Qasr Al-Safa and Al-Ghaza to serve the guests of God. There would be a ban on unauthorized vehicles and motorbikes using all entry points to the Grand Mosque, especially during weekends.

He said traffic officers have been ordered to prevent vehicles from entering the central area 30 minutes before and after prayers, except on Fridays, when the ban will be extended for an hour before and after prayers.

He said traffic officers have been deployed on all roads leading to the Grand Mosque including Al-Ghaza underpass, Al-Ghaza square, Al-Hafaer detour, and Al-Amyal, Al-Moaysim and Al-Awali overpasses.

Umrah firms warned against
supplying fake Zamzam bottles

Ministry of Trade and Industry officials padlock a compound at the neighborhood of Husseiniya
in Makkah after finding large amounts of expired dates and fake Zamzam water.
Thursday 15 January 2015

The Ministry of Haj recently detected the distribution of Zamzam bottles inconsistent with the specifications of the King Abdullah Bottled Zamzam Water Project, which the ministry distributes to the pilgrims on their departure from the Kingdom.

A ministry source said that the official body has warned Haj and Umrah firms against promoting the sales of these fake bottles to worshippers inside their lodgings.

“Further search operations and investigations revealed that the fake bottles are being supplied by unlicensed individuals at pilgrims’ accommodations,” the source said.

The National Water Company (NWC) is the sole operator for the Zamzam water project which, in compliance with the requirements of the air cargo security committee, allows pilgrims to carry 5-liter bottles of the sacred water through the Kingdom’s airports.

The King Abdullah Bottled Zamzam Water Project aims to provide pilgrims with the holy water in an organized and efficient manner. The project produces 5,000 cubic meters of Zamzam water daily and 200,000 plastic bottles with a volume of 5 liters each at a total cost of SR700 million.

The project was inaugurated during the holy month of Ramadan in 2009 and includes 42 distribution points.

Altercation closes road to Grand Mosque

Saturday, 17 January 2015

MAKKAH — An altercation that broke out between a traffic officer and an Egyptian expatriate brought traffic on the road leading to Grand Mosque to a halt.

The fight started when the expat insisted on entering the central area of Makkah, where no vehicles are allowed during prayer times, despite the officer’s instructions not to enter.

Several Egyptian expats interfered when the Egyptian man was hurt in the fight.

Eyewitnesses said the man should not have insisted on entering the central area during Maghreb prayer.

Makakh Traffic Department spokesman Lt. Col. Ali Al-Zahrani did not comment on the incident but said he would release a statement once investigations have been completed.

Umrah + Tourism = Growth

Sunday 18 January 2015

Prince Sultan bin Salman, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), says his organization plans to launch the “Umrah-Plus Tourism” program shortly, allowing foreign pilgrims to visit the Kingdom’s tourist resorts, historical sites and museums.

“The SCTA will coordinate with the Foreign, Interior and Haj Ministries to implement the program,” the prince said, adding that it would have a big impact in changing the perception of Haj and Umrah pilgrims about historical sites in the country while boosting the Kingdom’s economy.

Prince Sultan made this comment after signing an agreement with the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques to enhance cooperation between the two organizations to preserve Islamic artifacts and take care of Islamic historical sites.

“Our efforts are aimed at serving Islam and Muslims and highlighting Islamic culture and heritage,” said the SCTA chief. “We’ll develop Islamic historical sites with our partners, open them to visitors and appoint trained guides to provide tourists with correct information in light of the Islamic faith,” he said.

Prince Sultan stressed the significance of relics found in different parts of the Kingdom, adding that they show great Saudi Arabian heritage and its contribution to human civilization over the past centuries.

In a previous statement, Prince Sultan said the Umrah-Plus Tourism would benefit pilgrims from 65 countries, creating thousands of job opportunities for Saudis.

“We will work with Saudi universities to develop academic programs to meet manpower requirements in the travel and tourism sector,” the prince said.

Abdul Shukoor Ali, a tourism business executive, said the Umrah-Plus program would increase the number of pilgrims visiting the Kingdom and strengthen the country’s economy, since more than six million foreign pilgrims visit the Kingdom annually.

“At present pilgrims are able to visit only Makkah and Madinah. The new program will allow them to visit places like Madain Saleh, Madain Shuaib, Haqel, Abha and Taif. We hope this service would be available to pilgrims from all countries,” he said.

Tourism has the potential to become the second largest revenue-earning sector after oil, Ali said.

“The new move is significant at a time when oil prices are falling in the international market,” he added.

Haram employees are prohibited from pregnancy

موظفات الحرم ممنوعات من الحمل

زحام الحرم النبوي قد يضر بالموظفة الحامل (الوطن)
Crowdedness of the Holy Prophet's Mosque could hurt Mutaf pregnant
16 January 2015

King’s initiative to expand two holy mosques hailed

Monday 19 January 2015

Most Umrah pilgrims, who come from different parts of the world, visit Madinah as part of their spiritual journey to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque and visit historical places in the holy city.

Arab News met with a group of Algerian pilgrims to get their impressions. “I am very happy to visit Madinah, the city of the Prophet,” said Abdul Aziz Khattab. “It gave me an opportunity to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque,” he said.

Khattab said there are millions of Muslims around the world who want to visit this holy place. “I am thankful to Allah for blessing me to be here and I pray that other faithful also get this golden opportunity.”

Ahmed Abul Qassim, also an Algerian, said he was overjoyed for having gotten the chance to visit Makkah and Madinah.

Abul Qassim highlighted the remarkable progress achieved by Madinah during the past few years. “I have visited this holy city several times in the past when I came to Saudi Arabia for Haj and Umrah. The streets have become wider; there are several five-star hotels near the mosque; and new malls have been established.”

He praised Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for giving his instructions to expand the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah in order to create space for the growing numbers of pilgrims and worshippers.

Khaled Abdul Monem, another Algerian, said Muslims in his country love Saudi Arabia and its generous people. “We appreciate the Kingdom’s efforts in supporting countries and people at times of difficulty,” he said.

Haia: No religious or personal birthday
celebrations allowed

Monday 19 January 2015

The Health Ministry has instructed all public hospitals and health facilities not to allow celebration of “religious or personal” birthdays inside their compounds. The ministry’s religious awareness department said Sunday that the circular was based on a religious edict issued by the Dar Al-Ifta 27 years ago.

Dar Al-Ifta had given the verdict in 1409H after it came to know that a government hospital allowed its non-Muslim employees to celebrate Christmas in the housing compound for nurses.

Saudi Arabia does not allow the celebration of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) considering it as an innovation in religion.

Sheikh Mohammed Al-Oraifi, a Saudi scholar, said Muslims are not allowed to greet non-Muslims on their religious occasions like Christmas. “If they celebrate the birth of God’s son and you greet them…it means you endorse their faith,” he said.
