Prophet’s birthday celebration ‘sinful’

Saturday 3 January 2015

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has warned against celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him), saying that it is a superstitious practice that was illegally added to the religion.

“It is a bida (a sinful religious innovation) that crept into Islam after the first three centuries when the companions and successors of the companions lived.”

Instead, it is obligatory for Muslims to follow the Prophet’s teachings as contained in the Sunnah, the sheikh said in his Friday congregational sermon at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque in Riyadh.

The sheikh said that those who urge others to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet are evil and corrupt. “The true love of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is manifested by following in his footsteps and supporting his Sunnah ... that is how the love for the Prophet (pbuh) is expressed.”

He said Almighty Allah has said: “Say: ‘If you do love Allah, follow me: Allah will love you and forgive your sins.’” Muslims have a duty to believe in the Prophet (pbuh) as the servant and messenger of Allah, who was sent as a guide to the entire universe, Al-Asheikh said.

It is the duty of Muslims to love and respect him. They should also defend him against those who misinterpret his teachings, the atheists who deny him, and those who abuse or mock him. These are the duties of Muslims who truly love the Prophet (pbuh), the sheikh said.

He said that Almighty Allah states in the Holy Qur’an: “Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; the wealth that you have gained; the commerce in which you fear a decline; or the dwellings in which you delight, are dearer to you than Allah, or His messenger, or the striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His decision, and Allah guides not the rebellious.”

King stable after treatment of lung infection

Saturday, 03 January 2015

RIYADH — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah temporarily needed help to breathe through a tube on Friday due to a lung infection but the procedure was successful and his condition is now stable, a Royal Court statement said.

“After the necessary medical tests by the medical team, it became apparent that there was a lung infection that required the insertion of a tube to aid with breathing on a temporary basis this evening,” the Saudi Press Agency said citing the statement.

The Royal Court said the statement has been issued in line with the King's policy of maintaining transparency in all public matters.

King Abdullah was admitted to the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh on Wednesday for checks.

Examination “revealed lung infection, which required the provisional insertion of a tube on Friday evening,” a statement said.

“Thanks be to God, that step was crowned with stability and success,” the statement added.

The Saudi stock market dropped by about five percent at one point following the Royal Court’s announcement that the King had been hospitalized, before clawing back some of its losses to finish 1.8 percent lower on Wednesday.

The market was closed for the weekend on Friday. The King underwent two operations in October 2011 and November 2012 to correct “ligament slackening” in the upper back.

Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz, deputy premier and minister of defense; Deputy Crown Prince and Second Deputy Premier Prince Muqrin Bin Abdulaziz, several other princes, ministers, senior officials, foreign dignitaries and groups of citizens visited King Abdulaziz Medical City on Friday to inquire about the health of King Abdullah.

They prayed to Almighty Allah for the King's good health and speedy recovery. They were received by Minister of National Guard Prince Miteb Bin Abdullah, Deputy Foreign Minister Prince Abdulaziz Bin Abdullah, Makkah Emir Prince Mishal Bin Abdullah, Riyadh Emir Turki Bin Abdullah and other sons of the King.

Those who visited the hospital also included Sheikh Khaled Bin Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, son of Bahrain’s king, and Saad Hariri, former prime minister of Lebanon.

The sons of the King thanked all of them for their keenness on the health of the King.

Govt plans to expand low-cost Haj programs

EARLY PREPARATION: Officials have been asked to start preparing
and allocating camps for pilgrims as soon as possible.

Saturday 3 January 2015

Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar has announced that the government plans to expand the country’s low-cost Haj programs.

Hajjar said that officials are working to set up programs that would ensure control over the fees charged for citizens and residents going on Haj.

The minister made the announcement on Thursday during a briefing at his office on the operational plan of the General Administration of Local Pilgrims for the coming year. This included a review of the efficiency of last year’s operational plan.

Hajjar urged officials to start preparing and allocating camps for pilgrims as soon as possible, and complete all procedures to link agencies and service providers electronically.

He also called for the expansion of media and awareness programs, the eradication of fake Haj offices, and the development of procedures related to the booking and issuing of licenses. He said officials should also provide the public with more information on train services, the Jamarat bridge and slaughterhouses.

At the meeting it was also announced that 18 ministry committees have started preparations to oversee the election of tawafa officials, including ensuring that all voter information is accurate and voters are eligible to participate.

This comes in the wake of the committee recently releasing the names of eligible candidates and voters on the ministry’s website.

The minister is expected to inaugurate next week the 11th annual ceremony to honor 125 field groups, 22 administrators and 10 mutawwifs who excelled in service provision during Haj last year.

According to mutawwif Zohair Sedayo, vice president of the organizing committee of tawafa companies, the ceremony aims to encourage excellent service provision for visitors and pilgrims.

Indonesians top list of Umrah arrivals

Sunday 4 January 2015

A total of 1.1 million Umrah visas have been issued until Friday, said a top official.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Albejaoa, director of the Haj Ministry’s branch in Madinah, said that 580,000 Umrah pilgrims have already arrived in Saudi Arabia.

Hotels in Madinah are currently witnessing 100 percent occupancy rates, he said.

The peak Umrah season is now under way. Indonesians top the list with the highest number of pilgrims, followed by Pakistanis, Turks, Egyptians, Iranians, Malaysians and Indians, he said.

He advised Saudi nationals and residents to plan for Umrah in advance.

The director said that 97 percent of Umrah pilgrims include Madinah in their schedule and that a new group of pilgrims enters the city only when the previous group leaves.

The Haj Ministry closely monitors the quality of services provided to Umrah pilgrims and ensures that they adhere to specifications.

Haj Minister Bandar Hajar recently attended a meeting at his office in Jeddah where he was briefed on operational plans to manage local pilgrims during the current year.

Husain Al-Sharif, undersecretary of Haj affairs, and a number of officials, took part in the talks.

Umrah season gives boost
to Madinah’s local markets

Monday 5 January 2015

Markets in central Madinah are seeing a noticeable increase in activity as pilgrims from Iran, Turkey, and other nationalities have begun arriving to the city and visiting markets to purchase various goods.

The increase in visitors to the city has boosted competition among shops situated near the Prophet’s Mosque and surrounding areas.

According to Mohammed Ezzaldin, the manager of a shopping mall, shopkeepers are racing to meet the needs of customers and to obtain the highest possible sales. “Iranian visitors are the most active in the market as many buy large quantities of various items since prices are much lower than those in their home country,” he said.

Shopkeeper Mustafa Mahmoud said sales in the coming period are expected to be 30 percent greater than last year. Meanwhile, Mohammed Rashwan, head of the Chamber of Commerce and Trade in Madinah, noted that both shops and customers benefit from the trade at the markets, particularly as goods are cheaper due to the absence of taxes.

“All service sectors, including malls, restaurants and hotels, are thriving these days due to the large influx of pilgrims and visitors,” he said, noting that more than 5 million pilgrims are expected this year.

Local hotels in Madinah, in cooperatoin with local tour operators, have also arranged city tours to historical sites for the benefit of those who come to Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Mosque.

Places of interest include Quba Mosque, the first mosque built by the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Madinah, the Qiblatain Mosque, where the Qibla was shifted from the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the Kaaba when the Prophet (pbuh) was leading the prayer, and the graveyard on the foothills of Mount Uhud, where soldiers martyred in battle during the Prophetic period are buried.

Meeqat points include Dhul-Hulayfah, which is 9 km from Madinah; Juhfah, 190 km northwest of Makkah; Qarn Al-Manazil, situated 90 km east of Makkah; Dhat Irq, 85 km toward the northeast side of Makkah; and Yalamlam, 50 km southeast of Makkah.

A senior official from the Ministry of Health said that it is advisable for Umrah pilgrims to take a flu shot before their departure to the holy cities.
He noted that the vaccination service is available free of charge for citizens, as well as residents in hospitals and public health care centers located throughout the Kingdom.

‘Madinah is a global city’

Monday 29 December 2014

An Egyptian pilgrim has described Madinah as a global city.

Mohammed Dawood Jamal, who is on his second visit to the Kingdom, said: “My first visit to the Kingdom was for performing Haj. I am now here to perform Umrah and visit Madinah,” he said, adding that he feels honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the Prophet’s city.

“In Madinah, I find peace and tranquility, and this city has clearly transformed itself into a global city as evidenced by the shopping malls, markets, stores, and luxury hotels,” he said.

He is full of praise for the Kingdom’s efforts to provide utmost convenience and comfort to pilgrims despite the ongoing development projects of the holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah. “I personally faced no obstacles in preparing for this trip or during my stay,” he said, noting the trip cost him about SR5,000.

‘I spend most of the time in the Prophet’s Mosque’

Monday 5 January 2015

Most foreign Umrah pilgrims, who come to Madinah to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque and pay tributes to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), use the opportunity to buy gifts for their loved ones back home, especially dates.

Saquib Ahmed Quraishi, a Pakistani pilgrim, said he had come to the Kingdom several times to perform Haj and Umrah with family. “I feel immense happiness and satisfaction when I come for Umrah,” Quraishi told Arab News.

“Visiting the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah is the dream of every Muslim,” he said and thanked Allah for giving him opportunities to visit the holy places again and again.

“I love Madinah very much because of the presence of the Prophet’s grave and other historical sites. I find time to tour all these historical places during my Madinah visit,” he explained.

The battleground of Uhud, Quba Mosque, Qiblatain Mosque and Seven Mosques are some of the historical places in Madinah frequently visited by pilgrims.

“I spend most of the time in the Prophet’s Mosque, especially in the Rowda area, praying to Allah and reading the Qur’an,” he said.

“I also buy gifts from Madinah shops such as rosaries, prayer mats, and various types of dates such as ajwa, anbara, safawi, mabroom and sukkari,” said Quraishi. “Dates and Zamzam are the best gifts,” he added.

Visa ban for Ebola-hit states remains in force

Monday 5 January 2015

An official at the Ministry of Health has said that the ban on granting Umrah visas to visitors coming from countries hit with the Ebola virus is still in place at the beginning of this Umrah season.

He said that the ban comes from various bodies which advise competent agencies not to grant visa if it is found that the country in question is still infected with the virus.

The official confirmed that no Ebloa case has yet been recorded in the Kingdom since the beginning of the season. He added that authorities here in the Kingdom will apply strict procedures against some African countries and will deal with them according to the specified mechanisms.

He noted that a secure path was established which does not pass through security checkpoints at airports or land crossings.

A health questionnaire has also been distributed so that doctors can identify suspected cases of Ebola. If someone is suspected of being infected with the virus, the person is immediately moved to King Fahd Hospital by a specialized ambulance capable of dealing with such situations.

Saad Al-Qurashi, former chairman of the Haj and Umrah committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stressed the fact that the beginning of this Umrah season bodes well so far as no epidemic has been recorded and all Umrah pilgrims are expected to enjoy stable and good health conditions in the Kingdom.

"Epidemics around the world did not affect the volume of Umrah pilgrims. We are very keen on the security and safety of worshipers until they return sound and safe back to their countries of origin," said Al-Qurashi.

Saudi Arabia has taken a number of preventive measures at airports to prevent the Ebola virus from entering the country, or spreading during the seasons of Umrah and Haj. Such measures include a ban on the granting of visas for pilgrims from Ebola-infected countries, a major step in itself as the virus does not spread through thin air, but through body fluids such as blood and other secretions.

Preventing visitors of infected countries from entering the Kingdom prevents the spread of the virus in the country by 99 percent. The ban is not against certain nationalities, but against people arriving from the infected countries, or who have stayed there for more than 21 days, the longest incubation period of the virus.

The other measures taken at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and the Madinah airport involve monitoring the general health conditions of passengers entering the country. Any suspicious case will be monitored and isolated until authorities are assured the person is free of any contagious illness.

MCCI seeks priority for hotel investors
to launch Umrah firms

Wednesday 7 January 2015

A leading Haj operator has called on the Ministry of Haj to give priority to the owners of hotels in Makkah and Madinah for launching Umrah companies, which the ministry plans to do in the coming days.

Khalil Abdul Rahman Bahader, vice chairman of the committee for furnished apartments and hotels at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), pointed out that giving priority to the owners of hotels in the two holy cities will help prevent non-Saudis meddling with the housing market of Umrah pilgrims and visitors besides stopping speculations that raise prices during the peak season.

He pointed out that the completion by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) of the classification of more than 130 hotels in Makkah alone so far, apart from those in Madinah, indicated the presence of a large numbers of Saudi workers and investors in this area with the expertise, capabilities and potential to establish strong Umrah companies.

Bahader added that accommodation is still an important factor in determining the cost of Umrah and Haj.

He pointed out that granting the hotel owners in Makkah priority to set up Umrah companies would reduce the volume of complaints by pilgrims, which are mostly on failure of fulfilling housing specifications or violation of agreements made for Umrah and Haj packages.

He said the Haj Ministry planned to set up new Umrah companies as part of its preparations to meet the surge in the number of pilgrims from the beginning of next year with the completion and commissioning of the current expansion projects inside and on the squares of the Grand Mosque, masaa (area between Safa and Marwah) and the holy sites. He added that the officials at the Ministry of Haj told him that the increase in the number of Umrah companies is subject to the size of the market and the new regulations related to the organization of Umrah pilgrimage.

Bahader also viewed that the increase in Umrah companies would serve better the interests of pilgrims.

With the relocation of a large number of Makkah hotels and furnished apartments in the wake of the recent expansions at the Grand Mosque, they have acquired fleets of buses to transport pilgrims from their hotels to the Grand Mosque and back in addition to making arrangements to provide meals. He said providing housing and transport, and feeding the pilgrims are the major aspects of services provided by hotels.

He pointed out that giving priority to hoteliers in the establishment of new Umrah companies would lead to increased investment in the sector and more job opportunities for Saudis in addition to the establishment of hotel groups, which would result in greater competition in the field ultimately benefiting the pilgrims.

Bahader predicted that more than 400 hotel and furnished apartment owners and investors in Makkah and Madinah would be willing to launch new Umrah companies if the existing companies are given priority in launching these companies. He feared that their number would fall by more than half if they are not given priority.

He also warned that the entry of new parties to launch Umrah companies will only perpetuate the issues that plague the Umrah service sector.

Saudi's Jabal Omar signs 4 bln riyal loan
refinancing for Makkah project

By Reuters | Riyadh
Tuesday, 6 January 2015

Saudi Arabia's Jabal Omar Development Company has secured a 4 billion riyal ($1.07 billion) loan to refinance part of an existing facility it signed in 2012 to fund its real estate project in Makkah, it said on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia's largest listed developer by market value said the new loan from National Commercial Bank, to fund the project's first phase, will be stretched over a period of 15 years, instead of the eight years of the previous facility.

It did not give the details of the previous loan but said it was signed with six banks in June 2012.

Several companies in the Gulf have come to the loan market in recent months to refinance existing loans at more favourable borrowing rates as cash-rich local banks compete for deals.

The company is building a number of hotels in the holy city as it taps into demand from growing inflows of Islamic pilgrims.

Jabal Omar said it will repay the loan from the expected revenue of five hotels as well as revenue from leasing shops and selling some residential units in the project's first phase. Repayment would start in September 2017, it said.

In November, the company reported its first quarterly profit since 2009, earning 431.3 million riyals in the fourth quarter of the Hijri calendar, which it follows in preparing its financial statements.

Victim of suicide attack laid to rest in Makkah

Funeral prayers are carried out at the Grand Mosque in Makkah for
the border guard officials killed in yesterday's suicide bombing in Arar.

Wednesday 7 January 2015

Thousands of people attended the funeral on Tuesday of the Border Guard officer killed by a suicide attacker on the Kingdom’s border with Iraq on Monday.

Brig. Audah Al-Balawi was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up. The funeral was held after Fajr prayer at the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Tuesday. Grand Mosque Imam Sheikh Abdullah Al-Johani led the prayer and then the body was taken to the Al-Adl graveyard in the city.

Those in attendance included the director general of the Border Guard. The deceased man’s family included his brothers Salem, Saad Ali, Muhammed and Ahmed, and sons Muhammad, Ryan, Sultan and Hattan.

The Interior Ministry confirmed in a statement on Monday that the four attackers killed three Border Guard officers. Two of the terrorists blew themselves up and the other two were shot and killed by Saudi officers. The incident took place at the Suef border crossing with Iraq just before dawn.

A Border Guard patrol had attempted to stop the infiltrators, but they opened fire at the officers. In gunfight that followed, one of the infiltrators was killed. When the officers tried to persuade another to surrender, he detonated an explosive device he was carrying and was killed instantly.

The remaining two terrorists were caught while attempting to escape but one of them detonated a bomb he was carrying, while the other was shot. Al-Balawi was killed in the explosion. The other martyred guards are Cpl. Tariq Halwani and Pvt. Yahya Nujmi. The injured officers are Col. Salem Al-Anazi and Pvt. Yahya Muqri.

According to his relatives, Nujmi, who came from Mowaqeda in Jazan, signed his wedding contract with his bride-to-be last week. He was the sole breadwinner of his family, comprising his parents, two brothers and five sisters. Halwani, who was married seven months ago, had been planning to visit his wife in Jazan.

Mataf expansion to be ‘completed before Haj’

6 January 2015

Thursday 8 January 2015

The ongoing expansion of mataf, or circumambulation area around the Kaaba, would be completed before this year’s Haj, said Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, on Wednesday.

Inspecting the Haram expansion project here, he said thousands of pilgrims would be able to use the expanded mataf during the upcoming Haj season. “Most of the work would be completed before Ramadan in preparation for the peak Umrah season,” he said.

Al-Sudais said the third phase of the mataf expansion was progressing well and would increase its capacity to 105,000 pilgrims an hour. There would be no obstacles in the mataf area, which would be expanded and will have modern facilities.

He said officials were doing their best to ensure that pilgrims are provided with excellent services. The completed areas of the Haram expansion project, including the new building, would be opened to worshippers to reduce congestion caused by work on the mataf, he said.

Meanwhile, Al-Sudais condemned the terrorist attack on a Border Guard checkpoint in the northern city of Arar that resulted in the death of three Saudi soldiers including Brig. Audah Al-Balawi, a commander in the Northern Border Region.

He said the attack was against the teachings of Islam, which urge Muslims to protect the lives and honor of others. He commended the role of security forces in defending the Kingdom, its people and holy places.

“This is the treachery of the enemies of Islam who want to make this land of Islam a battleground for them. This is flagrant aggression and a terrorist act,” Al-Sudais said.
