Quran copies with printing errors
pulled from shops

Wednesday, 26 November 2014 - 4 Safar 1436

MADINAH — Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Saleh Al-Asheikh disclosed on Tuesday that some copies of the Holy Qur’an have been pulled from shops in Makkah and Madinah after some printing errors were detected.

He said that the ministry instructed the concerned agencies to withdraw the copies from the market after finding the errors.

“The shop owners displayed these copies for sale with good intention and without realizing that there are errors in the copies of the holy book that they put up for sale,” he said.

Al-Asheikh made the remarks at the opening session of the international seminar on Qur’an printing here.

Madinah Emir Prince Faisal Bin Salman inaugurated the event titled “Qur’an printing and publishing: Reality and expectations”.

Several prominent figures, including Sheikh Abdurahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, attended the opening session.

‘Life in Madinah has a spiritual dimension’

Quba Mosque, Madinah

Monday 24 November 2014

For one Pakistani resident in Madinah Mukhtar, who works as a cameraman in a media production company, his choice to work and stay in Madinah had added a special flavor to his life. The man, Ahmed, prefers to live in Madinah Mukhtar more than in any other city in the world.

Ahmed added that Madinah’s people are good-hearted, and have great manners. “I discovered this from my interaction with many segments of Saudi society in Madinah,” he told Arab News.

He believes that Madinah will be subject to various forms of development in the near future, saying that “This is evidenced by the huge construction projects currently underway including roads and bridges, as well as the expansion works being undertaken at Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi which is considered on of the largest projects under implementation in Madinah,” he added.

Expressing his happiness to be living among the Saudi people, he said “the Saudi people are loving and loyal, and this is why you’ll find many expats here enjoying their lives in different areas in the Kingdom”.

He explained that he loves so many aspects about life in Saudi, including “the Saudi cuisine, especially the famous dishes of Madinah. I also love the Saudi traditional clothing of the white garment, the red Ghutrah and Agal.”

He added that Madinah is famous for its archaeological and historically-religious sites, which makes living there more meaningful for him. He named some of the sites he enjoys to be living at a close range to, such as Qiblatain Mosque, Quba Mosque, the seven historical mosques, the battle fields of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as well as other sites outside Madinah such as the Badr battle field and Madain Saleh in Al-Ula province.

Umrah Season 1436/2014-15

125 Grand Mosque gates opened

Ongoing Grand Mosque expansion - 22 November 2014

Thursday, 27 November 2014 - 5 Safar 1436

MAKKAH — The Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques has opened 125 gates at the Grand Mosque to facilitate the entry and exit of Umrah pilgrims, who started arriving on Nov. 23 (Safar 1) with the beginning of the Umrah season.

Some 475 male and female officers will guard the gates and monitor the movement of pilgrims and visitors, Makkah Arabic daily reported on Wednesday.

No one will be allowed to enter the Grand Mosque when worshipers leave after prayers to prevent stampede.

The gates have digital signs which indicate the best time to enter the Grand Mosque. If there is enough room to accommodate worshipers and pilgrims, green sign will light up and if the Grand Mosque is full the sign will turn red. The presidency closed a number of gates because of the expansion work, but opened new gates.

There are 16 gates and escalators for people with special needs. These are: King Fahad Gate, Arafah Gate, Quraish Gate, Al-Safa Gate, Al-Marwa Gate, Al-Qararah Gate, gates from 9-64, 10-74, 11-84, 12-94, Al-Salam Gate, Al-Safa Escalator, Al-Arqam Escalator, Al-Marwa Escalator, Al-Qararah Escalator and Murad Escalator.

The Haj Ministry announced recently that the arrangements made during 2012 to restrict the number of pilgrims because of space constraints due to the ongoing expansion of the Grand Mosque would continue in the coming season also. The ministry made 20 percent and 50 percent cuts in the number of foreign and domestic Haj pilgrims respectively while the period of Umrah visas was reduced from one month to 14 days.

The e-tracking system is the major highlight of the e-regulations introduced by the ministry. The system enables the ministry to have an electronic control on the entire process, including issuance of visas, monitoring of services provided to pilgrims, entry and departure of pilgrims etc.

Inaccurate copies of Qur’an
to be removed from holy mosques

Thursday 27 November 2014

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance has instructed officials to remove all copies of Qur’an with mistakes from the two holy mosques, said Minister Sheikh Saleh bin Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh on Wednesday.

Al-Asheikh said the ministry recently discovered that traders and philanthropists had unwittingly brought copies of these Qur’ans into the country. He said they were under the mistaken impression that all Qur’ans printed around the world have no mistakes.

During his speech at the conference, Printing the Qur’an: Between Hope and Reality, in Madinah, Al-Asheikh said the ministry had identified errors in several verses in these copies. He said officials were instructed to remove these copies from the two holy mosques.

He said the government had spent generously on the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Qur’an in Madinah, which relies on scholars to oversee the printing process.

No errors in Qur’an copies at mosques
Friday, 28 November 2014

MADINAH — Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, has said Qur’an copies inside the two holy mosques as well as other mosques in the Kingdom are free of any printing errors.

He said the Qur’an copies approved by the presidency are those printed at the King Fahd Complex for Printing of the Holy Qur’an.

He said there are millions of copies of the holy book printed in the Kingdom and no doubts should be created about their authenticity.

He added that the Holy Qur’an Printing Complex has taken steps to prevent the entry of any fake copies of the holy book into the country.

Makkah entrances
‘should have multi-lingual signs’

Dr. Miraj Mirza suggest to built ''arch''
at other entrances of Makkah

Makkah “Beautiful Morning” by Denz Dimalna - 24 November 2014
Wednesday, 26 November 2014

MAKKAH — Several citizens have called on local authorities to add signs in different languages at the entrance of the Makkah boundaries in the Al-Omrah neighborhood, Makkah daily reported.

Sami Baqili, citizen, said a large number of visitors to the holy city do not read or write Arabic and they do not know its sacred boundaries.

He said: “Authorities should put up signs in the most common languages of Umrah performers and visitors at Makkah borders, especially the one in the Al-Omrah neighborhood.

“The least thing we should do for the visitors is indicate the boundaries in their own languages.”

Dr. Miraj Mirza, history professor at Umm Al-Qura University, said all entrances of Makkah should have these signs and share the same design. For example, the arch on the Makkah-Jeddah Expresway that indicates the sacred boundaries of Makkah for those coming from Jeddah should also be built at other entrances so that all of them have the same landmark, he said.

Saud Mayoof, citizen, agreed. “All the roads leading to the Grand Mosque should have signs in different languages to inform non-Arabic speaking visitors of the fact they are in Makkah,” Mayoof said.

Holy Kaaba cloth weaver dies
after 47 years of service

Wednesday, 26 November 2014

RIYADH — The oldest weaver of the black cloth covering the Holy Kaaba cloth died Monday at a private hospital aged 90.

Rajab Mahoos Al-Malki had spent over 47 years of his life doing the same job he was proud of, weaving the kiswa (black cloth).

He liked to talk a lot about his job whenever he met his friends or family members even after he retired in 2004.

Scores of tailors and embroiders learned many things from him while he was working for the Kaaba Kiswa Factory in Makkah.

His apprentices and colleagues said they would always remember him as a very polite and charity-loving person.

Born in 1930 and raised in a small village near Makkah, Al-Malki told Okaz during an interview a long time ago that he participated in weaving the first kiswa with colleague Abdulraheem Amin Bokhari.
They both worked on it for six months, he said.

He said during the interview: “We were asked to weave the kiswa after the factory production lines in Egypt came to a halt.

“We used the old kiswas as prototypes and worked hard to deliver on time.” The second kiswa was weaved in Makkah during the era of the late King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz.

“We wanted to prove to everyone that we were the best qualified to do this work,” Al-Malki said.

Dr. Muhammad Bajoada, director of the factory in Makkah, said the factory has lost a “great asset”.

Umrah Season
1436 / 2014-15

Online Umrah visa applications now open

ISLAMIC SPIRIT: New regulations aimed at improving services
for Umrah pilgrims would be implemented this year.

Thursday 27 November 2014

Umrah operators are now ready to receive online applications for visas, Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar has said.

Hajjar said they opened up for applications on Nov. 23. He urged companies working in the field to provide the best services for pilgrims, who are their responsibility on arrival in the Kingdom.

He said the online system had run smoothly last year, with over 6 million applications processed. Only 6,000 pilgrims had remained illegally in the Kingdom, he said.

“Facilitating the pilgrimage of this huge number of Muslims would not have been possible but for the huge expansion projects undertaken on the orders of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah,” Hajjar said.

He said that new regulations would be implemented this year aimed at improving services for Umrah pilgrims. The services covered include the issuing of visas, duties of agencies operating abroad, training of service staff, and dealing with countries that do not have Umrah operators.

Hajjar said the ministry has a Web-based portal, set up in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry to serve foreign pilgrims, including helping those traveling from countries where there are no licensed Umrah companies.

He said the new regulations were drafted by the Umrah section at the Haj Ministry, in collaboration with other departments, to ensure adequate advanced preparation for the season.

He said preparations for this year started before the end of the last Umrah season, with officials taking care to rectify previous mistakes and build on successes.

Hajjar said all Umrah-related activities are taking place electronically, which has reduced processing time to a few hours. “The acceptance or rejection of a visa application online does not require more than a few hours, without compromising security or service specifications. Previously these procedures took several days or weeks,” he said.

Prasarana wins Mecca Metro bid

to be the 'Shadow Operator'

27 November 2014

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana), the nation’s leading owner and operator of mass public transport system and services, has won the bid to be the 'Shadow Operator' for Phase One of the Mecca Metro, beating contenders from Turkey and Korea, among others.

Announcing the triumph in a media statement today, Prasarana Group managing director Dato’ Sri Shahril Mokhtar said the win, the first international success by the Group since its venture in to the international market early last year, was a testament to the fact that Prasarana was on par with some of the best rail operators in the world.

“In addition to bringing us closer to realizing our vision to be the preferred provider of a world-class mass public transport system, the win enhances our position to secure the upcoming bids for the operations and maintenance of the four Mecca Metrolines, in addition to the operations and maintenance of the Al-Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Southern Line Project,” said Shahril.

During the recent Hajj season, Prasarana deployed 12 technical personnel from its subsidiary, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, to join the team from Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd to temporarily support the operations of the Al-Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Southern Line Project.

Phase One of Mecca Metro covers two lines, with 22 stations spanning across 45.1km, including 24.9km of an underground rail network.

“We would be responsible to conduct preliminary and detailed design reviews for the project, in addition to developing the operations and maintenance specifications and service agreements for the future contractor.

“We will also advise the client in the development of safety and security strategies,” said Shahril.

The RM9 million consultancy services contract is expected to begin in December 2014. Phase One of the Mecca Metro is expected to be commissioned by 2019.

“We look forward to a very exciting year ahead. In addition to supporting the Mecca Metro project abroad, we are focused on completing the BRT-Sunway line in mid-2015, in addition to working on the LRT line extension project, as well as preparing for the operations of the MRT SBK Line,” Shahril added.

Two Holy Mosques University to be launched soon

Friday 28 November 2014

The new Two Holy Mosques University would be launched soon with an emphasis on teaching various religious disciplines, said Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.
In a recent speech to students of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Science and Linguistic Studies, he said the institute would soon set up an award to encourage and motivate scholars interested in scientific, linguistic and religious knowledge to pursue further studies.

He urged students to focus on their studies as a demonstration of their devotion and loyalty to Allah, not only to find jobs or status. “The pursuit of knowledge must be linked to faith, piety, respect and fear of God in all matters,” he said.
Al-Sudais said students should rely on the knowledge of experts and scholars, and not solely on information in textbooks, some of which may contain incorrect facts. He said students must base their studies on evidence and avoid extremist ideologies that promote destruction and the violation of people’s rights.

“A student of science should not use his knowledge to classify and divide people into groups, parties and sects that oppose one another, but should take a just and moderate approach,” he said.
Al-Sudais said the institute had for more than 50 years published important work and produced experts who have been of great benefit to Islam and Muslims.

HMH signs accord to operate
5-Star ''Coral Al Madina Hotel''

Wednesday, 19 November 2014

MADINAH — Hospitality Management Holdings (HMH) – a fully-integrated hotel management company founded in 2003 in Dubai that prides itself on being the first hotel chain in the Middle East to offer alcohol-free safe environment – has entered into a management agreement with Mobarak Hotels Group for operating Coral Al Madina Hotel.

Al Sheikh Mohamed Ebrahim Abdulrahim, Chairman of Mobarak Hotels Group and Laurent A. Voivenel, CEO of HMH signed the deal at a ceremony held in Madinah on Wednesday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Faisal Al Qassimi, CEO of Faisal Holding LLC and Vice Chairman of HMH, along with senior government dignitaries, tourism officials and prominent businessmen attended the function.

Abdulrahim said “our business vision is in line with the Saudi authorities’ plans for expanding the Holy Mosque of Prophet Mohammad and development of adjoining area. Therefore, Mobarak Hotels Group has appointed Designs Company that is specialized in providing integrated hotel solutions to oversee our growth and expansion. As part of this strategic agreement, Designs Company will be responsible for developing world-class hospitality products and facilities around the Holy Mosque to meet the needs of growing Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. With an initial investment of SR1 billion, Designs Company and Mobarak Hotels Groups have entered into a management contract with HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings for operating Coral Al Madina Hotel. As part of this strategic understanding, we will hand over the management of four other 4-star hotels under development in the same area to HMH.”

Addressing the exclusive gathering, Laurent said “Saudi Arabia is a key development market for HMH. We are very proud to debut in the Holy City of Madinah and to enter into this very important partnership with Mobarak Hotels Group. We are truly grateful to them for having given us this opportunity. The hospitality industry in Madinah is witnessing remarkable growth at the moment and we are very excited to be part of it. HMH is well-positioned in the Kingdom as one of the leading regional hotel groups equipped with the most advanced technology. We are confident Coral Al Madina Hotel will add tremendous value to our growing presence in Saudi Arabia and further strengthen our portfolio.”

Al Sheikh Mohamed stressed that “Coral Al Madina Hotel has been conceived to be a prestigious address for discerning travellers to Madinah and is superbly located just across the road overlooking the Holy Mosque. It is a very significant project for us and we are pleased to appoint HMH as the operator who are well-equipped to meet the needs of the Saudi hotel sector in accordance with the best international standards. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all partners with us in this amazing investment that is unique in every way.”

Featuring 400-plus rooms and suites, Coral Al Madina Hotel is spread over 10 floors and five basements. Included in its extensive facilities are three superb restaurants, lobby lounge, luggage room, shopping arcade, fully-equipped gym and spa, two state-of-the-art meeting rooms, business center and large parking space as well as helicopter landing site. The luxurious 5-star hotel is expected to welcome its first guests by Ramadan 2015.

Haj and Umrah tourism is a major source of revenue in Saudi Arabia and a mainstay of its economy. The number of pilgrims, which stood at 2 million in 2013, is expected to increase to 5.2 million by 2025. Aviation and hospitality infrastructure are, therefore, being rapidly developed to boost opportunities in Haj and Umrah.

The expansion of the airport in Jeddah is expected to accommodate 80 million people by 2035. At the same time Prince Muhammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah too is undergoing massive expansion with 83 percent of the project already complete. Madinah Airport is considered the third most important gateway to the Kingdom and the second most important airport during the Haj and Umrah pilgrimage seasons. Madinah receives an estimated 11 million visitors per year. Aviation traffic is slated to increase by 27 percent with the new expansion. The first phase of the project will be ready by early January 2015. The airport will accommodate nearly eight million travellers annually once it starts operating. Upcoming phases include increasing airport capacity to 14 million passengers a year, while the third phase will see the premises accommodate almost 27 million people.
