Historical landmarks threatened by
Prophet’s Mosque expansion

The historic Sajadah Mosque in Madinah
Wednesday, 19 November 2014 - 26 Muharram 1436

MADINAH — Power outage notices on the doors of a number of mosques including the historical Sajdah Mosque have left historians fearing that they might get demolished to make way for the Prophet's Mosque expansion project, Makkah daily reported.

Local authorities erected notices to cut off the power from several mosques in areas of Madinah that have been marked for demolition.

Some of the marked mosques carry historical and Islamic significance that date back to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) era.

Historians and concerned citizens are unsure whether the expansion project plans include renovation of the mosques, taking into account their architectural heritage, or to demolish them completely.

Among the mosques that could be demolished are the Ijabah Mosque and the Sajdah Mosque, also known as the Shukur Mosque.

The Sajdah Mosque is where the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Sujud Ash-Shukur (prostrating to Allah in order to express gratitude).

The mosque is located near the public transport stop north of the Prophet’s Mosque.

Both the Sajdah and Ijabah Mosques are classified by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities as historical Islamic landmarks.

Abdullah Kabir, Madinah landmarks researcher, said the expansion project must consult expert architects to ensure the preservation of the Sajdah Mosque’s architectural identity.

Preserving the historical significance of buildings in Madinah is considered complimentary to the expansion project’s vision and not an obstacle against modernization, he said.

He said: “Al-Sajdah Mosque is not just a praying location. “Imam Al-Bayhaqi and others confirmed the Prophet has performed sujud in this mosque.

“The mosque has a long history of preservation that started from the first Hijri century during the time of the Umayyad Caliph Umar Bin Abdul Aziz. The last renovation of the mosque was during the late King Fahd’s time.”

"…so a lady walks the boundary of the eastern E-X-P-A-N-S-I-O-N boundary…walking stick in right hand camera in left…life in danger....
hugging the construction fences and dodging the piles of dust…alas not being of the gender that has access to helicopters, cherry pickers or any remaining
tall buildings to aid the search for the most dramatic and descriptive shots she heroically and daringly strides forward .... to bring you ‘dusty birkentocks

…the emptying of buildings across the ring road has also begun… to soon join the mass destruction…

…doomed…the Mubarak Masjid Ejabah…buildings to the right have already been vacated and stripped of AC’s etc…

…soon the Green Palace (second from left) will be reduced to rubble along with all that you see in this photo…
but it may be some time before the Oberoi…
to the left of the Green Palace will be given its final demolition papers…

…and thus ends the sister’s expedition…until next time…maybe… In sha Allah

The General Directorate for the Affairs of Masjid Nabawi…this building has been under construction for many years…
Alhumdulillah it now has a purpose…unlike the building to the right which will be demolished for the new expansion…

…as can be seen by the reflection of the Green Dome and the Ottoman minaret it is approximately opposite Babul Salam
…a security guard ensures entrance to dignitaries only…

…labourers to the left of the Directorate building…
and to the left of this area is the Musalla area with Masjid Ghamama and Masjid Abu Bakr…

Ministry of Hajj

Ministry to appoint women
as board members of Tawafa organizations

Wednesday 19 November 2014

Women members will be appointed to the boards of directors of Tawafa organizations starting from the next sessions of these organizations, an official of the Ministry of Haj said recently.

“Women directors will be nominated and not elected as in the case of male members of the board of directors of Tawafa organizations. Their names will be announced after the election of male members are completed and the final results have been published,” Undersecretary at the Haj Ministry Hussain Al-Sharif said.

Al-Sharif added that the elections to the Tawafa boards would be on an individual basis and not by group representation, Al-Madinah daily reported.
“This is the first time women are getting an opportunity to sit on the boards of directors fulfilling their desire to have their own representatives to voice their concerns and views besides their participation in the development of Tawafa organizations,” he said. The new statutes empower the minister to appoint two women members to the boards with the system being reviewed every five years.

Al-Sharif said women directors’ work would be in the administrative sector. They need not take up any field task. The minister has paid considerable attention to the new statutes governing the elections beginning from the setting up of an experts committee to identify the best election method after studying elections in establishments inside and outside the Kingdom, the official said.

The team did extensive studies and met with board members of these establishments and Tawafa officials in addition to taking an opinion poll from the members of the establishments in order to learn the views of all concerned parties and the officials of the ministry who witnessed the past three elections before the drawing up of the new statutes. Prior to the submission of the draft statutes a workshop was conducted with the participation of the Tawafa workers, experts in the field, supervisors of elections for municipal councils, the chambers of commerce and industry, and members of the boards and ministry officials.

New Umrah season

will begin on next Sunday 23 November - 1 Safar

__________________________________

8,000 personnel ready to serve 6 million pilgrims

Wednesday, 19 November 2014 - 26 Muharram 1436

MAKKAH — The Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques is ready to receive more than six million pilgrims with the beginning of the new Umrah season next Sunday.

Sheikh Abdurahman Al-Sudais, head of the presidency, said that the presidency has completed all preparations and arrangements to implement its Umrah Plan of 1436.

“The presidency has mobilized around 8,000 personnel, including women, in addition to cleaning staff to extend the best possible services to the pilgrims at the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah during the Umrah season which will begin on Nov. 23 (Safar 1) and end on July 30 (Shawwal 14),” the Saudi Press Agency reported, quoting him as saying.

Last year, a total of 6.15 million pilgrims from outside the Kingdom performed Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage.

Al-Sudais said the presidency’s plan is aimed at realizing a number of goals, most import of which is extending all kinds of services and facilities to the Umrah pilgrims and visitors to the holy mosques.

“All arrangements are well in place and the presidency is making the arrangements in coordination with the concerned government departments and security agencies, including the governorates of Makkah and Madinah. The presidency will also provide services with regard to enlightening pilgrims on the rituals of Umrah and the related religious topics,” he said.

Al-Sudais said prominent Islamic scholars will deliver lectures on Islamic topics, Friday sermons at the holy mosques will be translated into different languages, including sign language for people with special needs, new arrangements have been made for visiting Al-Rawda Sharif and the grave of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Madinah with three timings for women during day and night.

The presidency chief said that the arrangements also include increasing Zamzam drinking areas, providing wheelchairs for the disabled, and golf cart for carrying elderly pilgrims and worshipers.

Entry to the Grand Mosque

Al-Sudais said new arrangements have been made for entry to the Grand Mosque with the beginning of the third and final phase of the expansion of the mataf (circumambulation area around the Kaaba). The entry for worshipers from the western side will be through the ground floor of King Fahd expansion area and the entry from the eastern side will be through Al-Salam Gate in the basement area of masa (running area between Safa and Marwah). He said that all the floors of the first phase of mataf expansion will be open for pilgrims.

Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar has said the arrangements made during 2012 to restrict the number of pilgrims because of space constraints due to the ongoing expansion of the Grand Mosque will continue in the coming season also.

The ministry made 20 percent and 50 percent cuts in the number of foreign and domestic Haj pilgrims respectively while the period of Umrah visas was reduced from one month to 14 days. The e-tracking system is the major highlight of the e-regulations introduced by the ministry for Umrah service.

The ministry is receiving Umrah visa applications through its global electronic network, which is linked directly to the ministries of interior, foreign affairs and other government agencies.

Haramain high-speed Railway

7 trains between Makkah, Jeddah in an hour

Makkah station model

Thursday, 20 November 2014

MAKKAH — The high-speed Haramain Railway will run seven trains between Makkah and Jeddah in one hour.

The Haramain train will link the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and Rabigh.

There will be two trains between Makkah and Madinah and four trains between Makkah and Rabigh in a day, and the railway will transport a total of 19,600 passengers in an hour. This was announced by Mohammed Al-Suwaiket, president of the Saudi Railway Organization (SRO).

He made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing a meeting on “Haramain Railway: A development project,” organized by the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Rusaifah railway station, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Al-Suwaiket said that the railway will be a pioneering project with regard to Saudization of jobs.

“There will be around 3,098 officials and employees at the railway, of which about 75 percent will be Saudis. Some of the Saudi staff, including engineers and drivers, are currently receiving training in Spain,” he said. According to Al-Suwaiket, the railway will be the first high speed electric train designed to suite the environment of the Middle East region.

The railway has a plan to transport more than 6.2 billion passengers within 12 years. There will be 35 trains and a special train for the elderly people.

Al-Suwaiket said that 86 percent of the construction work of Makkah railway station in Rusaifah has been completed at a cost of over SR3 billion. Speaking on the occasion, Maher Jamal, president of Makkah chamber, said that the railway will be instrumental in having massive facelift of Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Rabigh. The 450 km railway, with a speed of 300 km per hour, is estimated to cost SR37.5 billion.

Transport Minister Jabara Al-Seraisry recently said that 80 percent of the project had been completed and that railway lines had been laid in some places.

Apart from relieving road congestion for millions of pilgrims and citizens, the rail track is expected to cut down the amount of time taken to travel between Makkah and Madinah to two hours, and between Jeddah and Makkah to half an hour.

The project includes high-speed trains fitted with the latest equipment and five ultra-modern passenger stations – one each in Makkah, Madinah and Rabigh and two in Jeddah.

The project is over two years late and was originally planned to open in 2012 after starting of construction in March 2009. As of August 2014, the Madinah - Rabigh section is scheduled for services by the end of 2015, suggesting a phased opening.

Al-Baqie graveyard in Madinah
to undergo expansion

The Baqie graveyard in Madinah is seen in the forefront with the Prophet's Mosque in the background.
Thursday 20 November 2014

A huge expansion project for the historic Baqie Al-Gharqad cemetery in Madinah is ready for launch shortly, an official at the Presidency of the Holy Mosques said.

“The largest expansion in the history of the graveyard which will double its area to 300,000 square meters comes as part of the current expansion project of the Prophet’s Mosque to the northern side, with the number of grave spaces increasing to 42,000,” said the source.

The project of the cemetery which is designed to run parallel to King Faisal Road will require appropriation of the properties including farms and buildings on its eastern side. The office building of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Madinah will also have to be demolished to make way for the project, he said.

The entire facility, where relatives and companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and a number of Muslim leaders apart from Madinah residents are buried, is currently divided into 42 squares where the largest square houses 2,500 graves and the smallest accommodates 60. Some graves are allocated for infants while others are reserved for the elderly. He added that fresh remains are put in the graves every five years.

The cemetery has nine washing units for cadavers including four for men and four for women while one unit is kept in reserve. Bodies for burial are carried to the graves in golf carts. In addition, there are eight ambulances to transport the bodies to the cemetery.

The expansion work around the mosque has also taken into consideration the future requirements of the population growth in Madinah and the increasing number of pilgrims visiting the historical site.

The project is expected to have arrangements for the smooth entry and exit of pilgrims to the area besides better facilities for the washing and shrouding rituals, taking the bodies for prayers in the mosque and finally moving them to the burial site.

The regulations governing the burial include keeping records of the personal details of the deceased and the exact location of the burial.

The size of a single pit is 2 meters by 1 meter with a depth of 2 meters.

A network for the drainage of rainwater has also been put in place recently.

Madinah Haram expansion
''will not affect other old mosques''

Prophet's Masjid in Madinah
Friday 21 November 2014

The expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah would not affect other nearby ancient mosques, a senior official from the Ministry of Finance has said.

He said that the mosques of Abu Bakr, Omar ibn Al-Khattab, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Al-Ejaba and Abu Dhar (Al-Sajdah) would remain intact because they are outside the boundaries of the expansion area.

According to the source, the rehabilitation of the Al-Ejaba and Al-Sajdah mosques would begin after the completion of the expansion project.

Mohamed Al-Amin Al-Khatri, director general of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance in Madinah, reportedly said that 131 mosques are set to undergo restoration, including the historic mosques of Abu Bakr, Omar ibn Al-Khattab, Ali bin Abi Talib, and Fatima Al-Zahra.
