It is trusteeship I treasure, says new Kaaba keeper

Monday, 10 November 2014 -17 Muharram 1436

MAKKAH — The new keeper of keys of the Holy Kaaba has said the role is a great honor and responsibility.

"It is a trusteeship I treasure and hope I can reconcile with," said Sheikh Saleh Al-Shaibi.

Al-Shaibi became the senior Kaaba keeper after the death of his predecessor, Sheikh Abdulqader Al-Shaibi, two weeks ago.

“The responsibility of keeping the Kaaba's keys is usually transferred to the eldest male member of the Al-Shaibi family, who is not necessarily the son of the previous keeper,” he said. He added that this arrangement has always allowed for the smooth transfer of the Kaaba trusteeship among the Al-Shaibi family without conflict.

The Kaaba trusteeship has been with the Al-Shaibi family for centuries. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conquered Makkah in 630 AD, he asked for the key of the Kaaba. The Prophet prayed inside the Kaaba, cleaned it and handed the key back to Shaibah Bin Al-Awqas, an ancestor of Al-Shaibi, and said the key will remain with the family until the Day of Resurrection.

Al-Shaibi said there had been 109 Kaaba keepers from his family until now, and that he once served as acting Kaaba keeper for six years and the representative of the Kaaba keepers for 15 years.

“The Kaaba has two doors, an outer one visible to the public and an inside door named Al-Tawbah.

The outside door is two and a half meters above the mataf level (the circumambulation area), and it is three meters and six centimeters high and one meter and 68 centimeters wide.

The current Kaaba door, made of 280 kilograms of pure gold, is a present from the late King Khalid,” he said.

Al-Shaibi was a member of the first Shoura Council constituted by King Fahd by a royal decree 22 years ago.

“I received a call from the Royal Court notifying me that I had been chosen to be a member of the advisory council, which had 60 members then,” he said.

Al-Shaibi was an assistant professor at the Daawa and Fundamentals of Religion College at Umm Al-Qura University for 10 years before becoming the head of the Daawa and Fundamentals of Religion Department for seven years.

Last group of Hajis leaves

Monday, 10 November 2014 - 17 Muharram 1436

MAKKAH — King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah announced that its plan to fly pilgrims back to their countries was a success.

The last pilgrim to return to his country was a Pakistani pilgrim who was given an Urdu translation of the Holy Qur’an.

The airport transported 908,000 pilgrims back to their countries on 3,463 different flights.

The general manager of KAIA, Abdulhamid Abu Al-Eri, said this year’s plan was well executed. There were no delays in flights and a safety rate of 100 percent for pilgrims and staff was achieved.

Al-Eri credited the success to the smooth cooperation of the airport management and the constant guidance of concerned government organizations.

The pilgrims were pleased with the arrangements and they were given the Holy Qur’an as a farewell gift, he said.

Haj guide says drug addicts
traveled with pilgrims
Tuesday, 11 November 2014

JEDDAH — A Tawafa (Haj guide) establishment claimed there were a number of drug addicts among pilgrims, according to a report published by local daily Al-Watan on Sunday.

The Tawafa Establishment for Pilgrims from Turkey, the US, Australia and Europe said the drug addicts were second and third generation Arab immigrants living in Europe and America.

Sources of the establishment said the addicts came with their families from Italy and the US before completing their rehabilitation.

They said their families brought them on Haj with the hope that the spiritual atmosphere would help cure them.

The establishment said the Haj Ministry needed to thoroughly check the physical and psychological health of the pilgrims before granting them Haj visas.

According to the sources, the young addicts behaved badly with their fellow pilgrims and Haj guides serving them. They, however, said their number was small.

According to the sources, an Arab family of seven including drug addicts who arrived in the Kingdom for Haj left the country before the pilgrimage rites had started.

The sources estimated the number of Muslim immigrants to Europe and America to be more than 30 million.

They included second and third generations who were suffering from various psychological illnesses caused by unemployment and a failure to adapt to the new cultures, they claimed.

Meanwhile, businessmen may start investing in the construction of specialist hospitals and rehabilitation centers for the treatment of alcoholics and drug addicts.

Abdul Ilah Al-Sharif, assistant director of the Directorate General to Combat Drugs, said talks were currently under way with some businessmen to build specialized hospitals for the treatment of addicts throughout the Kingdom.

“The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has allocated SR300 million for the construction of an integrated facility for the rehabilitation of addicts,” he said.

He said once established, these hospitals would reduce the pressure on the Amal rehabilitation hospitals that do not have enough beds to accommodate all addicts.

Al-Sharif said the National Committee to Combat Drugs would soon open offices in the Amal hospitals so it can help with consultations and provide advice on the admission and treatment of addicts.

He revealed that there are 270 Saudi women currently being treated for drug addiction at the Amal hospitals in Riyadh and Jeddah.

The official said an intensive campaign against drug abuse under the name “Himayah” (protection) would be launched in schools throughout the Kingdom to enlighten teachers and students about drug hazards.

“Awareness workshops will be organized next month in four regions, which are Riyadh, Makkah, Tabuk and Jazan, to enlighten students and teachers about this menace,” he said.

Anger as Haj guides over 65 relieved

Wednesday, 12 November 2014 - 19 Muharram 1436

MAKKAH — The Ministry of Haj has relieved more than 100 mutawifs (Haj guides) because they are over 65, Al-Madinah newspaper reported.

Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar has approved a new bylaw for the election and appointment of board members of the mutawifs’ organizations.

According to the bylaw, which consists of 55 articles, the maximum age for those contesting to the board is 65 years and there is no bar on the number of terms.

The new bylaw says two female Haj guides shall be appointed to the board.

Mutawif Husain Hasan Huwait, who was relieved as a result of the directive, is considered one of pioneering Haj guides. He served as the head of a civil service association and offered many valuable services to the industry.

He has been extensively recognized by the ministry and the Tawafa Organization (Haj guide body) for Arab Pilgrims, which is why he described the ministry’s decision as “insulting and illogical”.

Huwait tried to contact the authorities to persuade them to overturn the decision because he said he is still able to perform the role, but to no avail.

He said: “Being a mutawif does not require an age limit. It is a tradition that runs in mutawif families.

“The ministry’s decision has caused more harm than good because it should benefit from the experience of those elderly mutawifs.”

Mutawif Mohammad Al-Subaie agreed with Huwait and said the ministry should make use of the experienced Haj guides to teach the younger ones.

He said: “The ministry’s decision violates the royal decree issued for mutawifs because there was never an age limit. Being a mutawif is something you can only inherit. There is no school that offers mutawif diplomas.

“The ministry should have run medical checkups to ensure the mutawif’s inability to serve rather than assume this based on age.”

Fellow mutawif Hasan Shibrawaishi said the ministry was being “ignorant” of the valuable input and development offer by experienced Haj guides.

“Any industry in the world makes use of experienced practitioners to train new ones, so how can the Ministry of Haj take such a decision?

“There were no evaluation procedures or medical records to prove the mutawifs’ inability to contribute or a statement that their age was of any relevance.”

The Ministry of Haj’s spokesman Hatim Bin Hasan Qadi said the age limit was not a new declaration and was inserted into the ministry’s charter years ago to ensure the availability of equal opportunities to applicants wanting to work in Haj and civil services.

“The ministry does not deny the importance of exchanging experiences among new and old mutawifs, but the number of applicants every year is much greater than the need and everyone deserves an opportunity to join the civil and Haj services,” said Qadi.

Nation's security is a red line, says Makkah imam

Friday, 14 November 2014 - 21 Muharram 1436

MAKKAH – Sheikh Saleh Al-Talib, imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, has affirmed that the Kingdom's security is a red line and there will be no compromise on this for any reason under any circumstances.

Every individual should realize the fact that the security of the land of the two holy mosques is of foremost concern to every Muslim in the world, Sheikh Al-Talib said in his sermon to thousands of worshippers who gathered in the sprawling mosque complex for Friday prayers.

He said Saudi citizens should be wary of conspiracies that target the nation’s security and integrity. “The enemies are using terrorism to create anarchy in the country to realize their ulterior designs and they lure foolish people to carry out their plots,” he said.

While urging believers to learn lessons from history, the imam drew attention to attempts made by enemies to sow the seeds of sedition and disunity within Islamic society even during the glorious period of the caliphs, the Saudi Press Agency quoted Sheikh Al-Talib as saying.

The imam also highlighted the Kingdom’s shining achievement in upholding tolerance and justice, eschewing bigotry and sectarianism. He said one of the greatest accomplishments of Saudi Arabia was ending sectarianism and bias among the followers of different Islamic schools of thought (madahib).

“There was a time when Muslims performed daily prayers separately standing behind four different imams at the Grand Mosque after every call for prayer. But now all of them perform their prayers behind a single imam, irrespective of their madahib affiliations,” Sheikh Al-Talib said while emphasizing that visitors to the holy mosque listen to Islamic lectures delivered by scholars belonging to various schools of thought.

Rain prayers in mosques today

Monday 17 November 2014

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has called on Muslims in the Kingdom to pray for rain on Monday.

"Istisqa", or rain prayers, have been offered since the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and are said in the event of drought or delayed rainfall.

In a statement issued on the occasion, the Royal Court urged Muslims to join the prayers, perform meritorious deeds, seek forgiveness and give charity to the poor.

In addition to major mosques across the Kingdom, the Grand Mosques in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah will also conduct the prayers on Monday. The prayers will also be performed at universities and schools across the Kingdom.

Prayers for Rain (Istisqa): Monday 17 Nov, after Sunrise
Makkah: Sheikh Saleh Aale Taalib
Madinah: Sheikh Hudhaify

An official from the Department of Mosques at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Dawa and Guidance said that these prayers will be conducted in mosques where Eid prayers are usually held.

In related news, officials from the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) told Arab News that the rain showers were beneficial for plants. “The rains will benefit the wildlife and plants,” he said adding that “in the event of good rainfall this season, we could also expect more productivity next spring during the breeding season.”

He said the rains will rejuvenate the vegetation and grasslands in the Central province and that they would greatly benefit the wildlife, providing food and water necessary for their sustenance.
