The kiswah is rolled up partially and stitched back internally. The inner side of the kiswah has a white backing to it, and then I think a white cloth is stitched on top again once it's been stitched up.

This is done only at hajj season as the public tend to damage the cloth. It is also considered as an ihram for the Ka'bah for this period.

Quote:
General supervisor of the Kiswa Factory in Makkah Muhammad Al-Quaifili said on Wednesday that the move comes within the framework of this year's Haj plan.
Al-Quaifili said the lower part of the kiswa was folded up from the ground by about three meters with a white cloth.
The kiswa, which means a cover, has been embroidered in gold and silver and for nearly a century its manufacture has been entrusted to local artisans. Before that it used to come from Egypt.
The Kiswa Factory was built about 75 years ago under the orders of King Abdul Aziz, the Kingdom’s founder.
A new kiswa is made every year at the factory.
“Many people hold tight to the kiswa and may tear the cloth during the process. Some of the pilgrims may cut pieces of the kiswa to take home as souvenirs,” Al-Quaifili said.
It is customary every Haj to fold the Kaaba cover up to protect it against tampering by overzealous pilgrims.
“We want to keep the kiswa clean and tidy all the time,” Al-Quaifili said. He added that the dress would be lowered down to its old position as soon as the Haj season was over.

The Kiswah rolled inwards.

The kiswah with the white backing.

The Kiswah folded during change over

Additional piece added

At times, the cloth is only rolled back and the ihram is put on later, depending on the amount of public.

Kiswa lowering

13 Muharram 1436 / 6 November 2014

KISWAH LOWERED: Officials at the Grand Mosque (Masjid Al-Haram) lower the Kiswah, the cloth that covers the Kaaba, to its original length on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. The Kiswah was raised partially before Haj. Mohammed bin Abdullah Bajodh, general manager of the factory that makes the special cloth cover, said it has been the practice to raise the lower portion of the cloth in the 9th day of the month of Dhu’l Hijah to prevent it from being spoiled and impeding the circumambulation of the Kaaba during congestion.

Mataf capacity expanded by 70%

Thursday, 6 November 2014 - 13 Muharram 1436

MAKKAH — The first two phases of the King Abdullah Project for the expansion of the mataf (circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba) have been completed within the stipulated period of time, the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques announced on Wednesday.

Sheikh Abdurahman Al-Sudais, head of the presidency, said that the expanded facility can accommodate 70 percent more pilgrims.

He said the first phase of the mataf expansion in the eastern direction with all its floors would be opened for worshippers once prayer mats and the shelves for keeping the Holy Qur’an are arranged and the Zamzam supply facility is organized.

Demolition of the remaining old structure of the Grand Mosque between the Safa hillock and the central area facing the King Fahd expansion structure, including the King Abdulaziz Gate with two minarets over it and three floors, started last week as part of the third and final phase of the expansion. With the completion of this phase, the total area of the project would be 81,567 square meters.

Al-Sudais said the third phase would consist of 22 escalators, 12 lifts for the disabled and elderly pilgrims, and Zamzam water drinking areas.

The new structure will have gates much wider than the existing ones to facilitate smooth flow of pilgrims and crowd management in a larger scale, especially during the peak Haj and Umrah seasons, in view of the fact that gates in the southern direction of the mosque witness huge rush.

The chief of the holy mosques presidency said there will be a number of new bridges that connect the courtyards with the mosque’s first floor.

The existing bridge that links the Ajyad Road with the first floor will be replaced after the mataf expansion.

There will be two alternative bridges at Al-Umrah Gate and Al-Fatah Gate instead of the gates that are being demolished in the mosque’s southern and western directions as part of the ongoing expansion work.

Phase 3

Al-Sudais said work is under way to reinforce the remaining structure of the mosque before beginning the third phase of the demolition work.

Workers have started removing lamps, chandeliers, decoration lights, fans, amplifiers, clocks, as well as the Abbasid-era pillars from the old structure prior to its demolition.

Barriers are being placed on the roof, first floor and the basement before beginning the demolition work.

The demolition work will be completed in accordance with the time-bound plan, Al-Sudais added.

All Haj pilgrims must leave by Nov. 8

Crowds of pilgrims at the Jamarat complex at this year's Haj.
Friday 7 November 2014

The Ministry of Haj has warned that foreign pilgrims face stiff fines, deportation at their own expense, and a year ban from the Kingdom if they fail to leave Saudi Arabia by Nov. 8.

Hatem Qadi, spokesman of the ministry, said recently that there would also be heavy penalties for those who harbor overstayers. He said there are currently 40,000 Indian and Malaysian Hajis still in Makkah and Madinah, while 1.3 million have left.

He said that Haj and Umrah operators must ensure that their pilgrims leave the country on their scheduled flights. They are required to work with the General Authority for Civil Aviation, and Haj and Interior Ministries to see that this happens.

Ahmed Luhaidan, spokesman of the Passport Department, said overstayers would be fined SR15,000 and have to pay for their deportation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be informed so that offenders are banned from getting Umrah visas for one year in their home countries.

There would also be a SR10,000 fine for a person who harbors an overstayer in the country. Expatriate offenders would be fined, imprisoned and deported, he said.

An Egyptian overstayer, Mansour Ahmad, told Arab News that he has been working illegally in Jeddah for the past three years after arriving on a Haj visa. He said he could not find a job in his home country and was advised by his friends to seek work in Saudi Arabia. He has been working as a cleaner.
A Pakistani overstayer told Arab News that he paid SR13,000 to get a Haj visa so that he could work in Saudi Arabia. He said he had previously been arrested for working illegally in the Kingdom and was deported. He said it was easy to go home because a person only had to pay for a one-way flight.

Umrah package down to SR100 from SR250

Friday 7 November 2014

Umrah travel operators in the capital have drastically reduced the weekend pilgrimage package to SR100, down from the Haj season price of SR250.

This year, the Haj season coincided with the summer holidays and a large number of vacationers could be seen with their families in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah during the season.

A return fare from Riyadh to Makkah by luxury coach, including accommodation in the holy city, will cost SR100 per pilgrim.

Accommodation can be upgraded to four-star standard on an additional payment of SR50.

A travel operator in the city said the weekend package to Makkah and Madinah starts at 4 p.m. from Riyadh on Thursday and ends midnight Saturday.

Each family is given a large room, while bachelors are accommodated on a sharing basis with three pilgrims in one room.

Children under 12 get 50 percent off the original price. Accommodation is provided in a three-star hotel.

There are nearly 300 Umrah travel operators spread out in the capital, largely concentrated in Batha. During the journey, the buses stop over at three points for the Maghreb prayer, Isha prayer and dinner and at the Meeqat in Taif for allowing the pilgrims to don the Ihram (the attire for the pilgrimage).

Local hotels in Madinah, in liaison with local tour operators, have arranged city tours to historical sites for the benefit of those who come to Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Mosque.

Places of interest include Quba Mosque, the first mosque built by the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Madinah, the Qiblatain Mosque, where the Qibla was shifted from the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the Kaaba when the Prophet (pbuh) was leading the prayer, and the graveyard on the foothills of Mount Uhud, where soldiers martyred in battle during the Prophetic period are buried.

Meeqat points include Dhul-Hulayfah, 9 km from Madinah, Juhfah, 190 km northwest of Makkah, Qarn Al-Manazil, 90 km east of Makkah, Dhat Irq, 85 km toward the northeast side of Makkah, and Yalamlam, 50 km southeast of Makkah.

A senior official from the Ministry of Health said that it is advisable for Umrah pilgrims to take a flu shot before their departure to the holy cities.

He noted that the vaccination service is available free of charge for citizens, as well as residents in hospitals and public health care centers located throughout the Kingdom.

Ambassadors leave Riyadh for Kaaba washing

Saturday 8 November 2014

A number of Muslim ambassadors based in the capital left for Makkah on Friday to take part in the ceremonial washing of the Kaaba on Saturday morning. Aside from the Muslim members of the diplomatic group, top Saudi officials including several ministers, Islamic scholars, Muslim diplomats, as well as citizens and visitors to the Grand Mosque are expected to attend the washing ceremony.

The scheduled washing ceremony will be led by Makkah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah, on behalf of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. The Kaaba is given a new Kiswa (covering) on the 9th of Dul Hijjah when pilgrims proceed to Arafat for the main event of the Haj.

The ceremonial washing of Kaaba is held following the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who washed it after entering it at the time of the conquest of Makkah. The sacred event takes place twice a year on the 15th of Shabaan (correction:1st of Shabaan) (the month preceding the fasting month of Ramadan) and in mid-Muharram (the month after Dul Hijjah when Muslims perform Haj).

South African Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq Jaafar said he deemed it a great honor to participate in the washing of the Kaaba. “This is the fifth time I am fortunate enough to get this honor,” the envoy added.

Sri Lankan Senior Minister for Urban Affairs Abdul Hameed Mohamed Fowzie, who has come to Makkah on invitation from Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar, said it is a wonderful opportunity to take part in the ceremony. He thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his government for rendering a yeoman's service to the Islamic Ummah through his magnanimity. Fowzie is also the chairman of the island's Haj committee in Colombo.

Bangladesh Ambassador Mohammed Shahidul Islam said that he is going to participate in the ceremony for the ninth time consecutively. “I am really proud and happy that the Haj Ministry has given me this opportunity once more,” he added.

The washing ritual begins with the performance of two raka’hs of Nafl prayer inside the Kaaba. The interior walls are then cleaned with rose, oud and musk perfumes using white cloth. Zamzam water mixed with rose perfume is then splashed on the floor and wiped with bare hands and palm leaves.

Before entering the Kaaba to do the washing, the governor is slated to circle the Kaaba seven times (Tawaf) during which he will touch the Black Stone.

Haram expansion: Abdulaziz Gate closed

Monday 10 November 2014

The King Abdulaziz Gate or Bab Malik Abdulaziz, one of the main gates leading to the Grand Mosque in Makkah has been closed as part of the mosque’s ongoing expansion project.

The King Abdulaziz Gate is located right opposite Ajyad Street, which also serves as a taxi stand for visitors. It is also near the escalators, which connect the general disembarkation point inside the tunnel from where visitors can easily access the mosque.

According to sources, two of the three doors of King Abdulaziz Gate were closed after Haj while the remaining gate was closed to the public on Saturday, following the washing of the Kaaba.

Now the worshippers who previously used the King Abdulaziz Gate are directed to the King Fahad Gate to enter the Grand Mosque. Twenty-six entrances besides the King Abdulaziz Gate are being closed, Ahmed Al Mansouri, spokesperson of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs told Arab News.

Al Mansouri said that there would be a number of new bridges connecting the courtyards with the mosque’s first floor. He added that the existing bridge that links the Ajyad Road with the first floor would be replaced after the Mataf expansion.

“There will be two alternative bridges at Al-Umrah Gate and Al-Fatah Gate instead of the gates that are being demolished in the mosque’s southern and western directions as part of the ongoing expansion work,” he said.
