‘We are ready for Haj season’

September 2014

Sunday, 28 September 2014 - 04 Dhul-Hijjah 1435

MAKKAH — All government agencies are ready to receive the guests of Allah and provide them with the best services during this Haj season, said Prince Mishal Bin Abdullah, Emir of Makkah region, in a press statement on Saturday.

“We are ready to provide all services that will help pilgrims perform Haj rituals with ease and comfort. We confirm the preparedness of all involved sectors to serve pilgrims,” Prince Mishal said.

This year’s campaign, called “Right Road … Haj with Permit”, aims to reduce negative practices and prevent violations of Haj regulations.

Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, chief of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, said the Two Holy Mosques have been prepared to receive pilgrims.

The courtyards outside will be provided with electronic signs to educate pilgrims about Haj.

Camps will be set up in the ritual sites where prominent Muslim scholars will give Haj lessons.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Dawah, and Guidance has completed the preparation plans for the entire month of Dhul Hijjah and all personnel have been working to implement the plans.

Eight imams and eight prayer callers have been assigned to the mosques in the ritual sites (Al-Kheef Mosque in Mina, Hujaj Al-Bar Mosque in Mina, Nimrah Mosque in Arafat, and Al-Mashar Al-Haram Mosque in Muzdalifah). Several committees have been formed to ensure the best services for pilgrims.

Makkah Municipality has completed all preparations and operational plans, with emphasis on providing fast but excellent services to pilgrims.

Some 23,050 employees will implement the plan while 14,000 cleaners will ensure the ritual sites stay clean. Special committees have been formed to monitor food establishments in Makkah and ritual sites, barber shops, and food stalls in the ritual sites.

Makkah Health Affairs has prepared 15 hospitals with 2,805 beds. These are supported with 129 health primary care centers in Makkah.

Makkah Civil Defense has implemented preparation plans and carried out numerous drills to get its personnel ready to respond to any emergency. All potential risks have been studied and plans have been set to respond to them.

An electronic system has been set up to expedite coordination between the Civil Defense and other pertinent agencies.

Haj convoys head for Makkah

More than 700,000 pilgrims have arrived in Madinah, including
around 250,000 who were already in the city awaiting departure.

Sunday 28 September 2014

Haj convoys left Madinah for Makkah under the supervision of Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman after Friday prayers.

Government agencies have stepped up efforts to ensure efficient completion of procedures at arrival and departure points and to ensure that pilgrims are provided with comprehensive services.

More than 700,000 pilgrims have arrived in Madinah, including around 250,000 who were already in the city awaiting departure.

Until early Friday, 430,000 pilgrims had arrived at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport through 1,650 flights. The city has also been receiving hundreds of conveys coming from Jordan and Palestine daily.

The number of pilgrims arriving from Eastern Europe has declined due to ongoing turmoil in Iraq and Syria, previously their main connection points into the Kingdom.

Mohammed Al-Bijawi, head of the region’s Haj Ministry branch, said that the ministry has stepped up efforts at departure and arrival centers, as well as along the Makkah-Madinah highway and all other roads leading to Makkah in order to keep pace with the flow of pilgrims into the Kingdom daily.

He said field teams with qualified personnel have been trained to rapidly complete arrival and departure procedures.

Al-Bijawi said the ministry’s monitoring committees have completed inspection visits to stations, service offices and housing sites to ensure overall performance is on par with this year’s operational plans and directives. He said emergency teams have completed more than 2,000 site tours across gathering points and housing sites for pilgrims to ensure that safety procedures are in place in accordance with Civil Defense directives.

Road security teams have been working around the clock to monitor the movement of pilgrims, with field teams deployed at numerous speed checkpoints to ensure safety, security and assistance.

The General Syndicate of Cars in the region has been welcoming pilgrims at Madinah airport and directly supervising Haj transport companies in Madinah in coordination with local organizations and the local ministry branch.

The General Directorate of Health Affairs, meanwhile, is continuing efforts at providing comprehensive health services across seven hospitals in Madinah, he said.

A total of a 1,000 clinical beds, including 135 beds for intensive care services, are available for pilgrims.

Additionally, 20 health centers have been set up around the Prophet’s Mosque, at housing sites, at entrances and exits in Madinah, and along main roadways to and from the city, as well as air, land and sea ports.

“A health work force of extensive medical, technical and administrative expertise has been trained to provide health and preventative services to pilgrims arriving in the city,” confirmed Al-Bijawi.

Preventive treatment has been provided for 64,038 pilgrims so far.
In addition, 43,611 pilgrims have been administered polio vaccinations.

Makkah emergency rain plan ‘stays in place’

Civil Defense officers conduct a drill on how to respond to an emergency situation in Makkah
Sunday 28 September 2014

Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Bar has refuted media reports that there have been changes to emergency plans related to possible flooding during the current Haj season. Recent forecasts have predicted possible light-to-medium rains.

Speaking to Arab News, Al-Bar said certain plans were already in place to deal with emergencies in general, including rains and floods. The plans were worked out in coordination with concerned parties such as the Civil Defense and the Ministry of Transport, he said.

He said contracts for maintenance of water disposal networks in Makkah and other Holy Sites were operational. The validity of the contracts ranges between 3 and 5 years, he said.

Referring to other projects aimed at serving pilgrims during the current Haj season, he said the 4th Ring Road is being implemented by the Makkah municipality which links the holy sites with the old Jeddah-Makkah Road. The new road will open next week.

Concerning new cleaning contracts, he said the existing Makkah cleaning contract would expire in five months and, hence, new contracts were being offered which are divided into five contracts to cover different geographical areas of Makkah and the holy sites.

Al-Bar said some 2,500 tons of waste are expected to be removed every day from Makkah on normal days. In Arafat and Mina, the volume of waste is expected to rise to 10,000 and 8,000 tons per day, respectively, he said.

Moreover, there will be an initial separation of organic waste, which causes pollution to the environment, and other solid wastes (paper, plastic containers) which have to be compressed and stored in ground stores in Mina. Organic wastes will be removed from the holy sites on a continuing basis, he said.

Haj symposium to discuss honoring of the Haj rites

Sunday, 28 September 2014 - 4 Dhul-Hijjah 1435

MAKKAH — The 39th annual Haj symposium will be held this year under the theme: "Honoring of the Haj rites", Haj Minister Bandar Al-Hajjar announced.

He said prominent Islamic scholars, Fiqh (jurisprudence) experts, researchers, academicians and men of letters from Kingdom and abroad will participate in the annual gathering which will be held soon.

He said the theme was picked from the recommendations of the previous symposia and also from suggestions made by a number of scholars. "Honoring of the Haj rites is a manifestation of the strong belief in God. Performing the rites correctly is a reflection that the Haj is right and acceptable," he said.

The minister said the symposium, which is held every year in Makkah during the Haj season, will focus on the consummate services being provided by the Kingdom to the guests of God.

"The symposium will also cover the great development projects being implemented in Makkah, Madinah and the Holy Sites for the welfare of the pilgrims," he added.

"The symposium will consolidate the principle of the rational dialogue between scholars on the issues facing the Ummah. The Haj is a great confluence of millions of pilgrims, who flock to the Kingdom every year", he said.
Hajjar said for about four decades the ministry has been holding this symposium every year. "The symposium will provide scholars from various parts of the Islamic world with an opportunity to sit together and debate issues concerning pilgrims and the nation," he added.

Meanwhile Makkah Emir Prince Mishal Bin Abdullah received in his office on Monday the Minister of Commerce and Industry Tawfiq Al-Rabiah and discussed with him the ministry's efforts in securing enough quantities of foodstuffs and consumer supplies to the pilgrims.

The Emir asked the minister to take stern measures aimed at controlling prices and said all the needs of the pilgrims should be secured.

He also received the governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al-Darrab, who briefed him about the commission's efforts to ensure the pilgrims with easy and fast communications.

"Our network s covering all the accommodation facilities of the pilgrims in Makkah, Madinah and the Holy Sites," the governor said.

The commander of the Haj security forces Maj. Gen. Abdulaziz Al-Soli has strongly warned against politicizing the pilgrimage and said anyone who endeavors to propagate his political views during the Haj will be severely punished.

"We will never allow any change in the objectives of the Haj, which prevent corruption, badmouthing and heated arguments," he said.

Soli said random fingerprinting last year uncovered about 4,000 expatriates who tried to enter Makkah without Haj permits. "They were deported and banned from coming to the Kingdom for 10 years," he added. "The Saudi drivers who transported illegal pilgrims were imprisoned and had their cars confiscated," he said.

Assistant commander of the security forces for traffic affairs Maj. Gen. Abdulrahman Al-Muqbil said until Sunday more than 8,300 buses had transported more than 400,000 pilgrims from Madinah to Makkah without any problems.

He said so far about 900 vehicles transporting illegal pilgrims were confiscated. "No Haj buses will be allowed to come from Madinah to Makkah after 11 p.m.," he said.

Saudi Arabia set to unveil newly
sewn Kiswa for Kaaba

Workers embroider the Kiswa, a silk cloth covering the Holy Kaaba, in the holy
city of Mecca, ahead of the annual haj pilgrimage October 8, 2013.
Friday, 26 September 2014

Saudi Arabia is preparing to unveil the newly sewn Kiswa, or cover of the holy Kaaba structure, as per tradition.

Each year, a specialized factory in Makkah sews a new Kiswa which will be used to cover the Kaaba during the upcoming hajj pilgrimage.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Sudais, the head of the presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, said: “The cover is… completely manufactured in Saudi Arabia after it had previously been manufactured and transferred from Egypt or other countries.”

According to Sheikh Dr. Saleh al-Shebi, caretaker of the Grand Mosque, a full-time maintenance team is tasked with preserving the Kiswa as some pilgrims try to take pieces of the fabric home with them.

Misconceptions have led some pilgrims to swallow the threads of the Kiswa, thereby setting off a practice that leads to the disfiguring of the cover.

They remove the threads using rings and scissors in the hope that it will bring them good luck and blessings. This continued action has disfigured the Kiswa, Makkah daily said in a report published earlier this year.

Food for Haj pilgrims under close scrutiny

In this file photo, Muslim pilgrims buy food from an outlet at Mount Arafat,
southeast of the Saudi holy city of Makkah.
Monday 29 September 2014

Makkah municipality is taking steps to ensure that the food served to pilgrims by catering companies and restaurants this Haj season is hygienic and of good quality. The municipality and the Ministry of Commerce have been engaged in separate inspections of eateries to ensure the best quality food for pilgrims. Besides the vicinity of the Grand Mosque where most restaurants are located, officials have now intensified inspections in the Aziziah district which is housing a large number of pilgrims.

“The Makkah municipality has allowed 2,229 temporary vendors to operate in the Haj season in addition to 35,000 permanent shops in the Holy city,” Abdul Salam Mushat, head of public health inspection in Makkah municipality told Arab News on Saturday.

He said that the municipality has been deploying mobile inspection teams backed with the latest technology to detect the quality of food and the temperature at which it is being stored.

“We have slapped a fine of SR 22,200 on a catering company for not abiding by the regulations and also arrested 20 expatriates working as cooks for not having their profession listed on their work permits and for being without a health certificate,” he informed.

He added that the municipality has shut down 11 restaurants and food outlets in Makkah in the last 24 hours for violating public health standards in addition to serving warnings to another 250 food outlets in the holy city.
Municipality officials also referred 51 expatriate vendors selling food on the streets to the concerned security authorities.

“We are keeping a keen eye on every stakeholder in the food business starting from the vendors to the catering companies,” Mushat said.

Makkah municipality has established 26 centers in the holy sites to expedite services in which inspections of food outlets will be priority, he added.

He said that they had been checking live animals and cow pens to ensure that they were in compliance with health and safety standards and had had to remove several in recent weeks for being in violation.

Tight watch on expat Haj workers

The Ministry of Labor’s inspection teams have found that some
of seasonal workers for the Haj are violating labor law.
Monday 29 September 2014

The Ministry of Labor has intensified its inspection of Haj seasonal visas granted to recruit temporary workers from abroad for Haj services. It is the first time that the ministry is focusing on such visas.

The seasonal visas for Haj workers have so far been largely misused by some of local business organizations; however, the scene has changed from this year as the ministry is focusing on it.

Authorities have discovered that some foreigners are arriving with Haj seasonal employment visas, mainly to perform Haj.

“We found 5,706 violations till Saturday, committed by foreign workers arriving in the Kingdom to work as seasonal workers for the Haj season,” Abdullah Abu Tinin, head of inspection teams of the Ministry of Labor, said on Sunday.

He added that the Ministry of Labor’s inspection teams have found that some of these workers are working contrary to their specific job description for which they have been recruited and brought into Kingdom. Some of the expatriates holding seasonal worker visas have come to perform Haj.

Abu Tinin stated that King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah Islamic Port, Duba Port and Halat Al-Ammar in Tabuk region, Tuwail Seaport in Jazan region and different land entry points were inspected by the ministry’s teams to check the temporary workers.

All expatriate workers, including seasonal workers, are being dealt with firmly in the context of violations, he said, adding that the ministry will also not spare anyone found not rendering proper Haj related services.

Abu Tinin stated that the ministry also is inspecting employers of these workers to check accommodation, food and other facilities.

According to him, the Ministry of Labor has established an exclusive observation office in Makkah to monitor and follow up the labor violations during Haj.

Meanwhile, Abdul Monem Al-Shaheri, director at the Makkah regional office of the Ministry of Labor, met with Abu Tinin at the ministry’s observation office in the holy city to review the labor violations committed by expatriate workers during Haj.

There are complaints that the seasonal workers brought for Haj related jobs often violate labor norms and also some of them come with the intention of performing Haj.

Pakistan Haj Mission mobilizes
1,600-member team to serve pilgrims

Haj assistants from the missions of India and Pakistan are on duty in Makkah
Monday, 29 September 2014

JEDDAH – Nearly one-fourth of foreign pilgrims who have come to perform Haj this year are from the Indian Subcontinent. Pakistan tops with 143,368 pilgrims out of the total 378,200 that include pilgrims from India and Bangladesh. Pakistan’s Office of Pilgrim Affairs in Makkah has swung into action to render the best possible services for pilgrims. It has mobilized a huge contingent of about 1,600 staffers to look after the welfare of the pilgrims as well as to enable them performing their rituals in ease and comfort.

The official delegation of Pakistan, led by Akram Ansari, member of the National Assembly, arrived in Madinah on Sunday.

Consul General Aftab A. Khokher told Saudi Gazette that all preparations are well in place and things are going very smoothly. He said that the country’s Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and five parliament members have joined more than 143,000 pilgrims for the Haj. “Bukhari and other leaders arrived in Madinah on Sunday on board the last Haj flight that touched down the Madinah airport. This year, we facilitated the customs procedures at embarkation points in Pakistan and that was found extremely comfortable for pilgrims,” he said. The Pakistani Haj pilgrims are enjoying maximum comfort and easiness for this year’s Haj, thanks to the well-planned and nicely implemented Haj operation plan, according to Khokher.

He thanked the Saudi authorities for the best ever services and facilities readied for the pilgrims at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah as well as at the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

Syed Abu Ahmed Akif, consul and director general of Haj affairs, said, as of Friday, 109,910 pilgrims arrived in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. A total of 56,684 pilgrims are performing Haj under the official government scheme while another 86,684 pilgrims come through nearly 730 private Haj organizations. Of government pilgrims, 29,265 have finished Madinah Ziyarah while 20,562 others will leave shortly for Makkah after visiting Madinah.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Saudi Arabian Airlines and Shaheen Air International (NL) are transporting the pilgrims. A total of 191 flights are transporting government pilgrims from the gateways of Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Sukkur, Sialkot and R.Y. Khan. More than 300 flights are being operated to carry private pilgrims.

Akif said elaborate arrangements have been made as part of the Mission’s Haj operation plan. “We have deployed as many as 1,598 welfare staff, including 311 Haj assistants (Moavineen-e-Hujjaj), 429 local assistants (Khuddam) in Makkah, and 130 in Jeddah and Madinah. Our medical mission is also offering flawless services to pilgrims.”

According to Akif, a total of 67,938 outdoor patients received treatment from the branch dispensaries. So far, 283 pilgrims were admitted in the Mission’s hospital, of whom 259 were discharged while 86 others were referred and admitted to Saudi hospitals. Sixty pilgrims were discharged from hospitals. A total of 27 pilgrims died, and they included15 private pilgrims, he added.

Sunday 28 Sep 2014

Dubai (IINA) – The British Foreign Office announced that about 18,000 British Muslims are expected to perform Haj this year, and promised to provide consular services for them.

Moroccan thrilled at stay in Madinah

Monday 29 September 2014

Moroccan pilgrim Abdul Muti Mohammed has come to the Kingdom to perform Haj with his family for the first time. He said he has been dreaming of coming to Makkah to perform the pilgrimage and finally God had answered his prayers. He said he was happy and felt inner peace especially inside the Prophet’s Mosque. He said when he set eyes on the mosque for the first time he realized why so many Muslims wished to visit the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

He appreciated the efforts of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for his interest in the expansion of the Two Holy Mosques for the benefit of the thousands of pilgrims who converge on the holy cities during the Haj pilgrimage each year. He also confirmed the deep-rooted relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Morocco.

“The Moroccan people love the Saudi people, and the best evidence of these good relations is the frequent visits of the two leaders to each other’s countries,” he said.

“I visited the historical locations such as Qub a Mosque and the seven mosques, in addition to the site of Ohod battle and other historical and archaeological locations,” he said.

He expressed his admiration for the architectural sites, hotels and shopping malls that meet international standards. He was especially impressed with the King Fahad complex for printing and binding the Qur’an and translating it into different languages.

He was appreciative of the smooth journey and procedures at the airport, transportation and accommodation arrangements.

Zero tolerance for subversive activity in Haj
Monday 29 September 2014

Saudi Arabia will not allow any activity that could undermine the security and safety of pilgrims and violate the sanctity of Haj, said Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Naif. Saudi security forces are capable of confronting any terrorist group or individual, he said.

Prince Mohammed, who is chairman of the Supreme Haj Committee, was speaking to reporters in Mina after inspecting the preparedness of the Kingdom’s security agencies for Haj.

He advised pilgrims to avoid engaging in any political propaganda or any other activity that would violate the sanctity of Haj.

Asked about the threat of Islamic State militants, the minister said Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has warned world leaders that terrorism would hit their countries if they continue their silence on the crimes being committed by the IS and other terrorist groups.

“We know that the IS is supported by certain countries and organizations but we are well prepared to confront them with all our force and determination,” Prince Mohammed said. “Our security forces have foiled hundreds of terrorist operations in the past.”

He said many foreign countries have benefited from the Saudi expertise in confronting terror.

He emphasized the need to crush the IS and other such groups to safeguard global peace and stability.

Prince Mohammed said the unfolding events in Yemen would not only affect the interest of that country but also the security of its neighbors as Houthis and Al-Qaeda militants would exploit the situation to attack others. However, he warned that Riyadh would crush terrorists with an iron hand.

Haj guides attack decision forcing retirement at 65

Monday, 29 September 2014 - 5 Dhul-Hijjah 1435

JEDDAH — A number of mutawifs (Haj guides) have strongly criticized the Haj Ministry’s decision to force them into retirement when they turn 65.

They urged the ministry to rescind its decision because they claimed it will effectively force them into unemployment.

Khalil Bahadour, member of the National Haj and Umrah Committee, said: “The decision is hasty and was not carefully studied before it was issued.

“Some emergencies during the Haj need the attention of experienced people.”
Bahadour is a mutawif and inherited the job from his father and grandfather. He has been in the business for more than 40 years.

“Instead of retiring the mutawifs, the ministry should assess their performances after each Haj season.

“Any mutawif who is found to be substandard should be prevented from doing Haj work for a season or two.”

He claimed to be the first mutawif to introduce electricity and air conditioning in the Haj camps in Mina.

Bahadour said many mutawifs do not look at Haj work as a business but as a sacred service for pilgrims.

He asked the ministry to obtain the opinions of pilgrims about the services they receive from various mutawifs to allow the good ones to continue offering Haj services even if they are over 65.

Bahadour is also deputy chairman of the committee of hotels and furnished apartments at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He asked for increasing the areas of Mina and Arafat to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims.

He also said the construction of high-rise buildings of 20 stories or more should be allowed in the two Holy Sites.

“If we do this, we will be increasing the capacity of Mina and Arafat by 20 times or more.”

Bahadour also suggested two-story tents be built in the two places.

Cracks in Jabal Al-Noor Mountain

Jabal Al-Noor Mountain
Monday, 29 September 2014

MAKKAH — The Civil Defense has asked the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) for a report on cracks that have appeared on the top of Jabal Al-Noor Mountain. A committee of representatives from five government bodies visited the mountain to closely examine the situation and also concluded that the 600-meter long dirt path to the top of the mountain was not safe.

The committee said a number of stalls around the path are in violation of municipality procedures while the path itself lacks lighting and a side fence to protect visitors from slipping off the mountain. It also recommended that the path is paved properly and warning signs are erected.

Haj: An unforgettable spiritual journey

Holy Mosque crowded - 27 September 2014

Tuesday 30 September 2014

Every year millions of Muslim faithful from different parts of the world assemble in Makkah and other holy sites for Haj, the fifth pillar of Islam, in a unique expression of Islamic unity and brotherhood, chanting “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik Lasharika Laka Labbaik” (O Allah, here we are answering Your Call, and we reaffirm our faith that You do not have any partners).

They come to the holy places in Saudi Arabia responding to the call made by Allah through His Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham): “And proclaim to mankind the Haj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on very lean camel. They will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Haj), that they may witness things that are of benefit to them. Let them complete their prescribed duties and perform their vows and circumambulate the ancient House.” (Qur’an 22:27-29).

Haj brings together the faithful from across the world, irrespective of their race, color, language, culture and position, in a marvelous manifestation of human unity and equality.

Allah has stated in the Qur’an: “O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah are those (believers) who are the most pious. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (49:13)

Retracing Prophets’ lives

During Haj, pilgrims retrace the unforgettable instances from the lives of Prophet Ibrahim, his wife Hajarah (Hager) and their son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) may Allah be pleased with them, thus receiving the gratification of following the path of great prophets.

They circumambulate the Holy Kaaba, in the center of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, which was rebuilt by Ibrahim and Ismail.

They run between Safa and Marwa mountains in commemoration of the run done by Hajarah in search of water for her son Ismail when he was a little child, which ultimately resulted in the sprouting of Zamzam, an amazing source of water that continues to quell the thirst of the millions of pilgrims and worshippers until today.

A great symbolic act

The whole practice of Haj is a very symbolic act.

The two pieces of white cloth a Haji wears reminds the believer of the simplicity of the way in which he came into the world.

It also reminds him of his final resting place, where he would lie within another white cloth, separated from the world, similar to the way in which he is separated during Haj.

The circumambulation (tawaf) around the Holy Kaaba denotes how we as believers should be living our lives, circling around Allah, following His teachings.

The faithful spend the night in Mina on Dul Hijjah 8 at the start of the pilgrimage for Yaum Al-Tarwiya in preparation for their important journey to Arafat, about 20 km southeast of Makkah, where they spend the whole day in prayer at the climax of the annual pilgrimage.

They seek Allah’s forgiveness to cleanse their minds from sins and bequeath His blessings in order to lead a better life in future for the benefit of not only himself, his family and the community but the whole mankind. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: “There is no day on which Allah frees His servants from Hell fire more than the Day of Arafat. And, verily, He draws near and then proudly speaks about them (pilgrims) in front of angels, saying, ‘What do they seek?’”

In another Hadith, the Prophet says: “Whoever performs Haj and does not commit any obscenity or transgression shall return as he/she was on the day his/her mother gave birth to him/her.”

Another Hadith says: “The reward for a rightful Haj is nothing but Paradise.” (Bukhari and Muslim).

Haj is Arafat

The day of Arafat holds great importance in Islam since this is the day when Allah completed His revelation on the Prophet.

According to one Hadith, a Jewish man said to Caliph Omar bin Al-Khattab: “O Ameer Al-Mumineen! There is a verse in the Qur’an, which if it was revealed on us, the Jews, we would have taken that day as a festival.”
Omar asked: “Which verse?”

He said: “This day I have completed your religion for you, fulfilled My blessing upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Qur’an 5: 3).
Omar said: “We know on which day and in which place was this verse revealed to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him). It was when he was standing in Arafat on a Friday.”

Prophet Muhammad has said “Haj is Arafat” considering the significance of Arafat Day.

After spending a full-day in prayers and meditation, seeking Allah’s forgiveness and bounties, Hajis move from Arafat to Muzdalifah after sunset.
Spending part of that night in Muzdalifah, they return to Mina to stone at Jamrat Al-Aqaba in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s rejection of Satanic inducement to dissuade him from sacrificing his son Ismail.

The Qur’an explains: “So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son. And when (his son) was old enough to help in his daily affairs, he (Ibrahim) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. So what do you think? He said: O my father! Do that which you are commanded. God willing, you shall find me of the patient.” (Qur’an 37:101-102)

Ibrahim took his son to a place in Mina to sacrifice him. “And when they both submitted (to the command of God), and he (Ibrahim) laid him (Ismail) face down upon his forehead; We called to him: O Ibrahim: You have indeed fulfilled the vision. Lo! Thus do We reward the good. Lo! That verily was a clear test.” (Qur’an 37:103-106) Then Allah instructed Ibrahim to sacrifice a sheep instead of Ismail. Not only Hajis but Muslims all over the world remember this incident on Eid Al-Adha and sacrifice animals to get the reward of Allah.

It was reported that Prophet Muhammad slaughtered on the day of sacrifice two horned white and black castrated rams.

When he placed them facing the Qiblah, he said: “Verily I turned my face toward the One who created the heavens and the earth, upon the religion of Ibrahim, being upright, and I am not one of the polytheists. Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. There is no partner for Him and I have been ordered with that, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah, it is Thine and for Thee, from Muhammad and his people: In the Name of Allah. Allah is the Greatest.” (Ahmad, Ibn Majah and Abu Dawud).

Allah is not asking for the flesh and blood of the slaughtered animal, but he looks into the believer’s heart, intention and sincerity and his/her readiness to sacrifice. After sacrifice the Haji goes to shorten or cut off his hairs of head in utmost simplicity and sense of submission and avoidance of any pomp and style. He is ready to remove his beautiful hair for obtaining the pleasure of God. After performing Tawaf Al-Ifadha at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, they spend three more days in Mina on the 11th, 12th and 13th Dul Hijjah. This gives them a golden opportunity for Muslims from different parts of the world to acquaint with one another and discuss matters for the uplift of the community.

During these three days, they stone at the three Jamrat, showing their rejection of Satan and its hateful thoughts and advices.

Haj rituals are completed with Tawaf Al-Wida (farewell circumambulation of the Kaaba) on Dul Hijjah 13 and the pilgrims return to their countries as new individuals spiritually energized to make positive and constructive contributions in their societies.

Hassan bin Ali Al-Ahdal, secretary-general of the International Islamic Media Organization, highlights the significance of Haj, saying it brings together Muslims from all over the world.

“People in different parts of the world are keen to perform Haj. They save money for this once-in-a-lifetime spiritual journey, to seek Allah’s forgiveness and enjoy praying at the Grand Mosque, circumambulating the Holy Kaaba and meeting with their brethren from other parts of the world,” he told Arab News.

Safeguarding Haj sanctity

He advised all Muslims to perform their religious rituals peacefully without causing any harm to their fellow pilgrims.

“They should avoid disputes and quarrels that affect the peace and tranquility of Haj,” Al-Ahdal said while commending the Saudi government’s efforts to enhance facilities for pilgrims by implementing gigantic projects in Makkah, Madinah and other holy sites.

“So, pilgrims should avoid all gossips, political propaganda and evil acts that affect the spirituality and sacredness of Haj.”

Haj also sends a great message to the world that Muslims are a peaceful nation that abides by the teachings of their divine religion, Al-Ahdal said.
“They come to the holy places to strengthen their spirituality and cleanse themselves from sins,” he adds.

Haj also highlights the unity of humanity as people with different backgrounds come to the holy places.

“This shows that we Muslims look for unity, rather than differences and work for the progress and prosperity of the whole mankind.”

He stressed Muslims readiness to cooperate with other communities for the development of the world.

Many organizations in Saudi Arabia, including the Haj Ministry, Muslim World League and the World Assembly of Muslim Youth hold seminars and conferences with the participation of scholars from different parts of the world to discuss various issues facing Muslims and exchange ideas and experiences for the betterment of the Ummah.

The Islamic Development Bank holds workshops after Haj for Muslim NGOs from different countries.

“The participants of these programs will be able to implement the best practices and ideas they have learned from these seminars and workshops in their societies,” said Al-Ahdal while wishing a rewarding Haj for the more than two million faithful who have come for the annual pilgrimage this year.

KSA to host 1.4m Hajis from abroad

Tuesday 30 September 2014

More than 1.4 million foreign pilgrims are expected to perform Haj this year, said Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar.

“About 1.36 million pilgrims already arrived from different countries by Sunday night and we expect their number to cross the 1.4-million mark,” he said.

Acting Health Minister Adel Fakeih, meanwhile, said no cases of contagious disease have been reported among pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah.

“Hospitals and medical personnel are taking proper care of the guests of God and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah is closely following up on pilgrims' health-related matters,” he added.

Hajjar launched a major Haj seminar entitled “Respecting the Signs of Allah” in Makkah and said it was a historic tradition to hold such seminars during the Haj season, with the participation of prominent scholars from around the world to exchange ideas for the benefit of the Ummah.

The three-day seminar is being attended by thinkers, authors and media personalities from different countries. “We hope that you take the information you received from this seminar and its research papers to your societies to enlighten your Hajis.”

Hajjar stressed the need for educating pilgrims before they arrive in the Kingdom. “It will help reduce the many problems we are facing today. It will also help pilgrims avoid many mistakes,” the minister said.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh said respecting Haj rituals means respecting Allah and his teachings. It will help pilgrims perform Haj in the right way, he added.

He commended the government’s efforts to expand the Grand Mosque and the mataf, or circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba, saying it would help pilgrims perform their rituals easily and comfortably.

He praised the ministry for organizing the seminar, saying it would help scholars from different countries to express their views on various Haj-related issues for the benefit of pilgrims and proper Haj management.

“The Muslim world has been going through difficult times because of division,” the mufti said, urging Muslims to return to the Qur’an and Sunnah and follow the means of goodness. He emphasized the need for greater efforts to enlighten Muslim youth and protect them from being enticed by terrorist groups.

Hisham bin Abdullah Al-Abbas, secretary-general of the seminar, emphasized the importance of the seminar’s topic. “Pilgrims must keep away from activities that would violate the sanctity of Haj or cause harm to fellow pilgrims,” he added.
