ZAMZAM water has great significance in the Muslim World and Muslims drink the sacred water when they visit the Kingdom to perform pilgrimage while also taking back small quantities to their respective home countries to share with friends and family.
Zamzam is unlike any other water as it contains many important minerals which give it a healing quality and its characteristic taste. Testimonies regarding the benefits of drinking Zamzam have been documented throughout Islamic history and proven by modern science, Al-Riyadh daily reported.
The Zamzam well is located in the most sacred place in the Islamic World: Makkah. According to historical resources, the Zamzam well was used 4,000 years ago to water crops. Makkah is connected to several underground tunnels leading to the Zamzam well, which is located 20 meters east of the Kaaba and is 40 meters deep.
In addition to it having a great amount of respect and reverence in the Muslim World, Zamzam water is also one of the great prides of the Kingdom. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has placed great importance on the care and maintenance of Zamzam well to ensure that it is always available to pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque. The government has also built state-of-the-art factories that produce millions of bottles containing Zamzam every year.
Zamzam water also has a prestigious reputation on the international scale as it has been certified for its health benefits. King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh tested samples of Zamzam water and the samples proved the water’s purity and presence of valuable minerals. Zamzam water is distributed in 10-liter canisters and constant and frequent supervision and testing ensure that the water is healthy for the human body.
By using advanced technologies such as ICP-MS and ICP-OES, researchers have discovered that Zamzam water is rich in valuable minerals that promote optimal functioning of the body. Moreover, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned Zamzam water as a healing antidote.
The renowned jurist and theologian, Ibn Qayyim, noted that Zamzam water has such a healing quality to it that man can survive on it without feeling hungry. In an incident he narrated in his book, “Prophetic Medicine”, Ibn Qayyim fell sick during one of his trips to Makkah.
He searched for a doctor or medicine but found none. He ended up drinking Zamzam water and reading Surah Fatiha with every sip of Zamzam he took. He claimed the water healed his body and after this incident, Ibn Qayyim took Zamzam water as the go-to medicine in times of need.
Countless Zamzam water samples have been examined over the past 20 years. The presence of valuable minerals such as chromium, selenium, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium has remained high and consistent over the years. Zamzam water is especially beneficial to those who suffer from calcium deficiency as it could provide them with 3 grams of calcium per day.

Minor fire at Haram expansion site

Civil Defense personnel in action to contain the fire near Grand Mosque in Makkah, Friday.
Saturday, 30 August 2014
Six people were injured in a fire that broke out at the Grand Mosque expansion project site in Gazza, north of the mosque, on Friday afternoon. Civil Defense personnel battled the fire from the northern, western and eastern sides with the help of water tankers, snorkel vehicles and ladders.
Col. Saeed Sarhan, spokesman of Civil Defense in Makkah Region, said the fire started in an area of 80*60 meter scaffolding wood planks of the upper floor ceiling of a three-story utility building under construction located at the extension of the first ring road project.
The Saudi Binladin Company is implementing the project in the central Haram area.
Civil Defense firefighters and rescue teams were rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information about the fire at 1.52 p.m., the spokesman said. All the people in the expansion work project were evacuated simultaneously with the dousing work, he said.
The spokesman said the Civil Defense personnel had a tough task in fighting the fire because of the high elevation and especially due to the heavy smoke billowing from the scene.
The Red Crescent and Civil Defense personnel took the injured people to hospital. Security authorities have started a probe into the incident, Sarhan added.
