Makkah hotel room rates break records

Hotels situated nearby haram Makkah
Monday 28 July 2014

Several tourism and commercial firms are taking advantage of high demand by leasing hotel rooms with views overlooking the Grand Mosque for up to SR70,000 (or in some cases, SR100,000) a night, operators in the hospitality sector recently revealed.

“These firms act as brokers by sub-leasing accommodation units to pilgrims and Umrah firms at extortionate and off-the-radar prices,” said Mansour Abu Rayash, head of the real estate committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

“They are taking advantage of the fact that there are a limited number of rooms to compensate for low seasons at other times of the year and to cover yearlong operational expenses.”

“Pilgrims are conned into paying anywhere between SR30,000 and SR70,000 a night,” he said.

“No matter how you look at it, Makkah is the most expensive city for purchasing land and leasing out property during peak seasons. In Dubai, the cost of a hotel room can reach SR15,000 for the same level of accommodation and services.”

“Unfortunately, supervisory authorities cannot fine hotels that charge SR100,000 for a room in the central area,” said Abu Rayash. “They actually calculate prices based on the cost of land, construction and furnishing. Add to that service charges and profit margins and you end up with a price hitherto unheard of.”

“A hotel room in Makkah can cost anywhere between SR150 and SR100,000 a night depending on the location,” he said. “The city has witnessed a massive influx of pilgrims from inside and outside the Kingdom, particularly from the Gulf States, with the advent of the summer vacation.”

“This is in spite of the fact that authorities have limited the number of Umrah pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah to 250,000 per city.”

Expansion projects in the Grand Mosque, worth about SR400 billion, have contributed to price hikes since there are fewer places to stay.

“Hotels to the south of the Grand Mosque are limited to Jabal Omar Hotels, Al-Ghaleb and Al-Tawhid hotels and some a few buildings to the north,” he said.

There are an estimated 60,000 rooms in Makkah, but the majority of these rooms are very far from the Grand Mosque and most pilgrims do not opt for them. Most Umrah pilgrims end up going for the 4,000 rooms that are nearer to the central area.

Skyrocketing prices don’t deter pilgrims

UNSHAKABLE FAITH: Many low-income pilgrims save up for years to be able to travel to the Kingdom.
Monday 28 July 2014

Pilgrims from around the globe continue to flock to Makkah despite the extortionate prices of performing Umrah, which can reach SR50,000 a head.
Yet many of these pilgrims, on low incomes, save up for years before being able to travel.

Abu Mohammad Somali, a 60-year-old pilgrim, is one such example. Abu Mohammad was unable to perform Umrah until his son went abroad to work and began sending him money.

“I flew in with converts from different nationalities, most of whom were performing Umrah for the first time,” said Mohammad Al-Owayni, an Egyptian pilgrim. “They had been wanting to perform Umrah ever since they converted, but they knew they could not afford it.”

One pilgrim from Southeast Asia had to wait two years after his conversion before he could afford coming to the Kingdom.

Yousif Al-Hajiri, a preacher at a local mosque, said pilgrims coming in from abroad often don’t know if they will ever get the chance to visit the holy land.

Mohammad Qurt, a mutawwif (pilgrims’ guide around the House of God), said he had met many pilgrims who thought that coming to Makkah was a farfetched dream that would never come true.

“I met a family of three from a poor Southeast Asian country,” he said. “I was told through their interpreter that they had sold their farm, their only means of survival, to perform Haj.”

Eid Mubarak

Eid call: Help crisis-hit fellow Muslims

FERVOR: Makkah’s Grand Mosque was jam-packed with millions of Muslims offering Eid prayers on Monday.

Tuesday 29 July 2014

Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, performed Eid Al-Fitr prayer at the Grand Mosque in Makkah in the presence of a massive congregation.

He was joined by Prince Bandar bin Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, Education Minister Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Prince Ahmad bin Abdulaziz, Prince Khaled bin Fahd bin Khalid and Deputy Crown Prince Muqrin.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah was congratulated on the advent of Eid Al-Fitr by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi and King Abdallah of Jordan via telephone, while former Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri also attended the prayers.

Eid sermon at the Grand Mosque

In his Eid sermon, Imam Saleh Al-Humaid said the Muslim nation should be considered a single body, where if one part is in pain, the whole body becomes responsive, just like a healthy body is all-encompassing.

“Muslims in neighboring countries are facing crises, problems and catastrophes provoked by enemies,” he said.

“Muslim orphans, widowers, homeless people, refugees, the less fortunate and the sickly are in need of our support and solace,” he said. “Indeed, many of our fellow Muslims are spending this Eid in misery and humiliation.” He expressed his gratitude for divine bounties while urging Muslims to be pious and God-fearing.

Al-Humaid told listeners that humans are intrinsically social creatures. “People need one another in all aspects of life,” he said. “Everyone should have access to food, housing, clothing, education, treatment and employment, but we humans also have emotional needs that are fulfilled through friendship and networking based on need or mutual interest.”

He added: “Individual morals and ethics are manifested through their relations with others, whether relatives, friends or strangers. “Loneliness and isolation are not conducive for any human being, let alone believers.”

Al-Humaid highlighted the importance of empathizing with the plight of fellow Arabs.

Money is not the only means to help out, said the sheikh.

“Roads to charity include good deeds and sound morals,” he said. “People’s first source of happiness should first and foremost be their belief and faith in God and their desire to engage in good deeds without expecting praise in return.”

Al-Humaid also advised believers to use Eid as an opportunity for reconciliation and to drop grudges and ill-feelings.

Eid at the Prophet’s Mosque

Meanwhile, more than one million performed Eid prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. Sheikh Salah Al-Budair the led prayers and delivered the Eid sermon.

“We must preserve our religion and follow our Prophet’s guidance,” he said. “We also must true understand Qur’anic verses without perverting their original meanings.”

Eid in Riyadh

Riyadh also greeted the beginning of Eid Al-Fitr with zeal and zest.

Eid prayers were offered at around 400 mosques, while special arrangements were made for women by placing improvised partitions just after sunrise.

Riyadh Gov. Prince Turki bin Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz performed Eid Al-Fitr prayers at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque and later met with princes, scholars, senior officials and a group of citizens, who came to congratulate him on the auspicious occasion.

Prince Turki also visited patients in hospital and wished them a speedy recovery, joy and tranquility.

Riyadh’s governorate and municipality collaborated with several official and unofficial bodies to come up with elaborate arrangements for recreational events and colorful activities throughout the city.

The Riyadh Police has made a comprehensive security plan for the weeklong festivities.

Seven locations, including the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Malaz and the King Fahd International Stadium in Naseem, were the scenes of much-awaited festivals and dazzling fireworks displays, according to sources from the Riyadh Municipality.

Festive locations were distributed geographically across the city, while the firework show will commence at 11:15 p.m. over a period of three days.
“The fireworks display is fascinating to watch,” said one housewife. “The explosion of various colors against a black sky truly gripped me.”

Another major attraction during the grand celebrations is the fountain dance show at the King Abdullah Park in Malaz.

Makkah governor orders
confiscation of fake Qur'an copies

Emir takes quick action after
tampered copies of Qur’an found in Jeddah

King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran in Madinah. Authorities are warning Muslims
against unauthorized copies of the Qur'an and other reading materials that are being sold in malls and markets in Jeddah.

Friday, 01 August 2014

JEDDAH – Emir of Makkah Prince Mishal Bin Abdullah has issued directives to speedily withdraw tampered copies of the Holy Qur’an found in some stores in malls and shopping centers in the Jeddah governorate, Saudi Press Agency reported Thursday.

Prince Mishal issued orders to form a committee, comprising representatives of the region’s police and the ministries of Islamic affairs, commerce and industry, and culture and information to investigate how tampered copies of the Holy Book entered the country.

The committee will make sure all such copies are pulled out from store shelves and question merchants to discover their source and how they were sold without verifying their accuracy. The committee will present its findings to pertinent authorities for further action.

The tampered copies wrapped in attractive packages were sold at a very low price, prompting many people to buy them without ascertaining their source.

King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Glorious Qur’an in Madinah is the sole agency authorized to print and distribute the Holy Book in the Kingdom. However, copies printed and distributed by reliable agencies in some Arab countries can be purchased from stores in Saudi Arabia.

Umrah season sees more visitors
despite reduced visa numbers

Friday 1 August 2014

Although Umrah pilgrim quotas for various countries remain reduced this year, including in Ramadan, the flow of visitors to Makkah remained high. The holy city witnessed an increased number of pilgrims from within the Kingdom during the fasting month.

The Ministry of Haj has said that over 6 million Umrah pilgrims visited the Kingdom during the just concluded Umrah season and, according to the traffic police, over 20 million visitors visited the holy city in the month of Ramadan alone.

“The Ministry of Haj issued 6,048,373 visas during this year’s Umrah season, with the successful rate of returning pilgrims,” a senior official from the ministry told Arab News. In fact, he added, the successful rate of returning pilgrims has been confirmed with the effective electronic monitoring. “Shortly, we will release the details,” he added.

“We have successfully managed the entry and movement of 20 million passengers till the 27th of Ramadan into the holy city of Makkah.” said Ali Al-Zahrani of traffic police in Makkah. He added that more than a million cars were parked during the holy month in designated parking slots in Makkah.

He said that traffic police executed its plan successfully to avoid vehicular congestion inside the holy city in general and the Grand Mosque area in particular. This is substantiated by the lowest number of traffic accidents also violations.

Al-Zahrani added that the smooth traffic movement was facilitated in the central Makkah region enabling pedestrians to visit the Grand Mosque by preventing the vehicular movement into the area.

“Adequate public transport buses were provided from parking slots to the Grand Mosque; approximately 1,255 public buses were used to fetch pilgrims during Ramadan from parking slots to the Grand Mosque,” he added.

The cleaning and hygienic maintenance of the city also was a challenging job in the city due to the increase of pilgrims.

The Makkah municipality received an average of 2,555 tons of waste mainly from the Haram and central Makkah region each day of the month of Ramadan, according to its officials. It received about 73,202 tons of waste during the holy month, excluding Eid Holidays, said an official statement of Makkah Municipality.

It also deployed over 8,500 exclusive cleaners during Ramadan in the city.
The Presidency of Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque Affairs announced that Umrah 2014 plan has proven successful. Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the presidency, said it received and served the guests of Allah in Makkah and Madinah, and attributed the success of the Umrah season to Custodian of Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah’s vision and direction.

Bridge near KAIA to be removed in 2 months

Jeddah Haramain station project
Friday 1 August 2014

The bridge near King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) will be removed within two months to make way for new railway tracks under the Haramain High Speed Rail Project.

“The tracks will pass through several intersections along the Haramain and Nuzha roads,” said Bassam Ghulman, project director.

“Intersections are slated for completion within the two-month timeframe with the exception of the King Abdullah intersection, which will be complete by the end of the year,” he said. “The bridge leading to KAIA shall be removed to facilitate construction work taking place in the surrounding area.”

“The bridge must be removed in this time to keep apace of the railway schedule,” said Ghulman. “A new replacement bridge, which will be built with different standards and descriptions, will also be completed at the end of this year,” he said.

“The Haramain track between Rabigh and Madinah, meanwhile, will run by the end of next year,” he said. The railway, which spans 450 km, is being developed under the guidance of the Ministry of Transport upon directives issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. Work is ongoing at several intersections, including King Abdullah Street, Palestine Street, Tahlia Street and Airport Road in Jeddah.

The project includes the construction of four main stations in Madinah, King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh, Jeddah and Makkah.

Each station will include a main building, an arrival and departure halls, a mosque, a Civil Defense center, helipads, passenger waiting areas, short and long-term car parking slots, VIP halls, shops, restaurants and cafes.

Masjid Al-Mustarah, a witness to history

Saturday, 02 August 2014

MADINAH — Masjid Al-Mustarah, located 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Prophet's Mosque, has acquired its name because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) rested and prayed at this place after her returned from the Battle of Uhud.

Mustarah in Arabic means to take rest. Whenever the Prophet visited the graves of the martyrs of Uhud, he rested at the place.

It is also called Bani Haritha Mosque because it is located among houses belonging to the tribe.

The mosque was built during the times of the Prophet and Madinah historians say the Prophet prayed in the mosque.

The mosque is located to left of the road leading to Uhud Mountain and is about half a meter above ground.

Due its historical significance, the mosque was renovated and expanded during the Saudi era.

The mosque is rectangular in shape and occupies a 491-square-meter area and is distinguishable by its beautiful dome and minaret. The mosque has entrances from the east, west and north.

Historian Ahmad Murshed said the mosque is located among the homes of Bani Haritha. A Turkish castle that stood west of the mosque was removed in 1995.
