Last Friday of Ramadan
______________________________

Millions throng the Two Holy Mosques

Saturday, 26 July 2014 - 28 Ramadan 1435

About two million faithfuls thronged the Two Holy Mosques to offer Ramadan’s last Friday prayers.

Authorities had put in place all arrangements to ensure ease and comfort for them amid scorching sun. The passion and fervor of the devout could be gauged by the fact that the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah were full to the brim more than a couple of hours before the noon prayers.

All the floors and courtyards and King Abdullah Expansion Project in the Grand Mosque were full of worshipers. The rows of worshipers spilled over to the streets of central area. According to estimates, over 1.5 million worshipers offered prayers in the Grand Mosque led by Sheikh Saud Al-Sheraim.
Sheikh Salah Al-Budair was the imam in the Prophet’s Mosque where about half a million worshipers offered prayers in an atmosphere of piety and devotion.

On Thursday night, the 27th night of Ramadan, popularly considered the Night of Power, over three million faithfuls in the Grand Mosque supplicated Almighty Allah to pardon their evil deeds. There were poignant scenes all over with many worshipers crying loudly beseeching Allah to have mercy on them and on the Ummah and favoring world peace and tranquility.

Leading the Qiyamul Lail (late night) prayers, Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, chief of the Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, supplicated for the Muslims in general and those in Palestine in particular. He also sought Allah’s mercy in ending the sufferings of Muslims in different parts of the world.

Meanwhile, all preparations have been made for the Khatmul Qur’an (end of the recitation of the Holy Book in taraweeh) in the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque on Saturday, where over three million worshipers are expected to gather.

Crown Prince in Makkah

Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense, arrived in Makkah Friday to oversee all arrangements till the end of Ramadan.

3 million in Makkah pray for besieged Muslims

SEEKING MERCY: Millions of faithful thronged the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Friday, the 27th of Ramadan,
to perform Umrah and attend the last Friday prayers of the holy month.

Saturday 26 July 2014

Millions of pilgrims offered prayers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah on the last Friday of Ramadan.

Addressing the congregation at the Grand Mosque, Imam Sheikh Saud Al-Shuraim said: “Muslims who offered their prayers during this month are real winners. There are other Muslims who live in difficult circumstances and unable to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr.”

He reminded all Muslims to pay Zakat Al-Fitr before Eid prayers. The Grand Mosque was fully occupied by worshippers.

Leading the night prayers, called Qiyam Al-Lail, on Thursday, Imam Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais beseeched Allah to ease the suffering of the helpless people.

The congregation of nearly 3 million faithful was reduced to tears when the imam’s voice quivered with emotions at the mention of the plight of the besieged Palestinians, Syrians and Iraqis. He prayed to God for unity among Muslims.

In a bid to avoid overcrowding, most of the pilgrims were asked to pray in the neighboring streets of the Grand Mosque.

In Madinah, worshippers filled every nook and cranny of the Prophet’s Mosque to say their Friday prayers in an atmosphere of spirituality, serenity and tranquility.

Security authorities, under the direct supervision of Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman, provided all necessary measures to facilitate the arrival of pilgrims visiting the Prophet’s Mosque.

Under the plan, and as per Prince Faisal bin Salman’s directives, a bus service has been launched to transfer visitors to and from the mosque, easing traffic congestion by preventing the entrance of thousands of cars inside the mosque precincts.

Abdul Wahid bin Ali, director of public relations and media at the General Presidency for the Prophet’s Mosque, said that 10,000 new carpets had been placed throughout the mosque during Ramadan, both in the male and female sections, as well as on the roof and in the courtyards surrounding the mosque.

35,000 to travel through
Jeddah airport daily for a month

Saturday 26 July 2014

The number of pilgrims traveling through King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah in the last few days of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr is expected to increase to close to 35,000 travelers daily.

A total of about 875,000 pilgrims are expected to travel over the next 25 days until the middle of Shawwal, according to KAIA Director General Abdul Hameed Abalarry.

As of last Monday, all 14 Haj and Umrah terminals were converted to departure terminals only. “The terminals at the airport have all been completed for the approaching high season, which will last through the end of Ramadan until mid-Shawwal,” said Abalarry.

Airport traffic is expected to increase by 20 percent compared to last year due to the increase in the arrival of pilgrims from inside and outside the Kingdom, as well as increased travel movement during the summer season.

The second phase of Umrah and summer vacation travel began during the month of Shaaban. Accordingly, all Haj and Umrah halls were prepared to absorb the increase in movement, said Abalarry.

He noted that the percentage of travel in the airport exceeded 12 percent in the past year, while the arrival of travelers to perform Haj decreased by about 20 percent as a result of the regulations associated with the ongoing construction plans in Makkah and Madinah.

Meanwhile, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) confirmed its commitment to completing the first phase of the new King Abdul Aziz International Airport by the end of this year. The trial phase is expected to be launched during the first half of the coming year.

“By the middle of next year, the first phase of the airport will begin to operate with a capacity to absorb 30 million travelers annually,” GACA said. “The second phase of the airport will have the capacity to absorb 45 million travelers annually.”

10,400 Thai Muslims to perform Haj

Thai Muslim villagers pray in a mosque during the Ramadan festival in Thailand's southern province of Narathiwat in this July 20, 2014, picture.
Thailand, where Muslims are the second largest religious group after Buddhists,
has announced a new policy under which more than 10,000 Thai Muslims will perform Haj this year.
Saturday 26 July 2014

Thailand, where Muslims are the second largest religious group after Buddhists, has announced a new policy under which more than 10,000 Thai Muslims will perform Haj this year.

Wijak Chittarat, charge d’affaires at the Thai Embassy, said the original Haj quota allocated to Thailand and to many other countries has been reduced by 20 percent by Saudi Arabia due to ongoing expansion work in the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

Chittarat said Thai Airways International, the national carrier, will offer 20 chartered flights for Thai pilgrims from Songkhla province to Saudi Arabia. This year, Thai Airways had arranged 10 A330-300 flights for the pilgrims from Hat Yai, Songkhla, to Madinah from Aug. 27-31, and 10 return flights from Jeddah to Hat Yai from Oct.10-19.

There are many flights Thai pilgrims can opt for to arrive in Jeddah and Madinah from Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phuket International Airport. Thailand has a quota of 10,400 people to perform Haj in 2014. A large number of pilgrims from the deep south of Thailand like Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun and Songkhla regions have registered for Haj this year.

Referring to the conditions of Muslims in Thailand, where 94 percent of the population is Buddhists, Chittarat said: “Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has extend at the beginning of Ramadan best wishes to all Thai Muslims.”

On July 15, the NCPO hosted an Iftar dinner to express the Thai government’s good will toward Muslims in Thailand in particular and all over the world in general. “It is also to confirm that the Thai people from culturally diverse backgrounds can live together in harmony,” he said.

The diplomat said that Thailand is mostly known to the outside world as a Buddhist-majority country.

But Thais of different faiths have always lived together in religious harmony, their religious freedom protected by the Thai king and, in modern times, by the constitution. Muslim Thais have always been an integral part of Thai society since their arrival in that country in the late 13th century, he said.

“There are almost 800 Islamic schools in Thailand ranging from small ones to universities, most of which are concentrated in the Southern Border Provinces,” said Chittarat. Records also show that currently there are 3,802 registered mosques in Thailand, of which 681, the highest in the country, are located in Pattani Province, while Bangkok alone has approximately 177 mosques, he said.

Asked about reports of unrest in the south of Thailand, Chittarat said: “The NCPO has now done some restructuring to create harmony and integration between relevant agencies. Plans, projects and works of all the relevant agencies and government units involved with security and development work will be integrated to ensure continuity and consistency, as well as addressing the needs of the people in the area.”

Residents urged to avoid Grand Mosque
for Eid prayers amid congestion

The Grand Mosque in Makkah is a scene of congestion as pilgrims from all converge on Sunday perform Umrah.
Tuesday 29 July 2014

Civil Defense authorities issued an advisory via SMS to the Kingdom’s residents on Saturday urging them to avoid going to the Haram Masjid (Grand Mosque) in Makkah at this time and give way to Umrah pilgrims.

With construction work still going on, Islam's holiest mosque was a scene of congestion on Saturday and Sunday with the influx of pilgrims who have come from abroad for Umrah.

The advisory reiterates that Eid prayers can be performed at any mosque.
Jeddah, Makkah and Taif are expected to receive huge number of visitors from all over the Kingdom during the Eid festivities.

The rains which fell on Makkah on Saturday also caused disruptions and worsened congestion.

The Jeddah Municipality has made arrangements for Eid prayers in 279 locations across the city and suburbs.

“We have geared up 221 mosques and 58 temporary prayer yards, known as ‘musallahs,’ in the city for Eid prayers” said Sami Al-Ghamdi of the Jeddah Municipality.

He said that 953 cleaning personnel are being assigned at these sites.

He also said that the Jeddah Municipality has drawn up a plan to conduct a series of entertainment programs that will last for six days, including on the first day of Eid, as part of social responsibility initiatives.

Jeddah’s residents and visitors are expected to line up at the Red Sea waterfront area in Jeddah, where coast guards have cautioned beach goers not to allow their children to swim in the water, said Col. Najih Al-Juhani, Makkah coast guard spokesman.

He said that additional teams are being mobilized for search and rescue operations across coastal lines in the region.

Eid festival celebrations have been planned on a large scale by the Makkah Municipality.

Eid will be celebrated in four different locations over the four days as part of its social responsibility initiatives, said Mohammed Taha Faqi of the Makkah Municipality.

“Glittering fireworks will be displayed during the Eid festival and cultural programs and comedy events will be conducted,” he said.

Eid arrangements have also been made in cities between Makkah and Riyadh.
Taif’s municipality, meanwhile, has announced that the city’s parks are ready to welcome visitors.

Grand Mosque lightning photograph goes viral

Monday 28 July 2014

The iconic photo of the flash of lightning over the Grand Mosque on Saturday evening created a new record of sorts on the Arab News Facebook page.

The picture, taken at 7 p.m. by Arab News photographer Ahmad Hashad, was uploaded on the newspaper’s Facebook page at around 8 p.m., and within minutes it went viral. The title said: “It’s raining in Makkah. The clouds of mercy have opened up.”

Hashad said he was lucky to have been at the right place at the right time.

“Around Iftar time on Saturday, I saw clouds forming over Makkah. I immediately rushed to the top of the massive Clock Tower, and soon I was able to freeze that picture of lightning in the sky with the Grand Mosque, packed with the faithful below,” he said.

By 9 p.m. Sunday, the photo had been shared more than 9,300 times, and it reached 1.5 million people. It elicited almost 1,300 comments, with readers praising Arab News for the fabulous post.

The Arab News Facebook page has seen dramatic growth over the last 18 months. Starting with only 17,000 fans at the beginning of 2013, it will soon surpass the 1 million fan mark.

The page is a lively one with debate and reaction from fans across the world. Every week there are hundreds of thousands of engaged fans. The month of July saw a large segment of the readership voicing their outrage at Israel’s onslaught on Gaza.

Saudi Arabia is without doubt the largest fan base. However, many come from beyond the Kingdom’s borders. Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and the Filipinos also are well represented and are active participants.

Riyadh seems to have the most fans, followed by Jeddah and then Hyderabad (India). The page attracts a young readership with nearly 60 percent of fans being in the 18-32 age group.
