Sighting of new crescent unlikely

on Friday: astronomer

Wednesday 25 June 2014

Ramadan is likely to begin Sunday (June 29) as astronomers have ruled out the possibility of sighting the new crescent on Friday. “Moon will disappear before sun in most regions of the Kingdom on Friday,” said Mulhem Hindi of King Abdulaziz University’s Department of Astronomy and Space Science.

Meanwhile, the Labor Ministry said employees in the private sector are required to work six hours, instead of eight, during Ramadan. “The working hours in Ramadan will be six daily and 36 weekly as per Article 98 of the Labor Law,” said Taiseer Al-Mufrej, the ministry’s spokesman.

Authorities have warned Muslims and non-Muslims against publicly eating or drinking during the fasting period, saying they would be punished in accordance with the law. Violators face imprisonment and lashes.

But Abdul Rahman Al-Abdullatif, a legal consultant, proposed washing of bodies, cleaning of mosques and participation in charitable activities as alternative punishment for Muslim violators.

“Some non-Muslim expats may eat or drink in public without knowing the Kingdom’s law and they should be given a warning that they should not repeat the offense,” he said.

Ramadan spiritually energizes Muslims

Wednesday 25 June 2014

The holy month of Ramadan comes to the Islamic world every year to remind the Muslim faithful on the need to return to Allah by following His teachings in all walks of their lives in order to achieve peace in this world and the Hereafter.

The daytime fasting and nighttime prayers spiritually energize the faithful to lead a new life, benefiting the whole humanity and opening a new chapter of peace and progress.

Ramadan is not a month for shopping festivals as many people wrong believed.
It is a month for fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the world.

While major holidays of other faiths have largely become commercialized events, Ramadan retains its intense spiritual meaning.

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, has cautioned Muslims 14 centuries ago that the Ramadan fasting should have a real impact on their lives. He has advised the faithful: “Let it not be that the day that you fast and the day that you break fast be equal.” Meaning, Ramadan should change one’s behavior, attitude and outlook toward life.

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa or piety.” 2:183) While fasting, Muslims must ponder whether it had any effect in making them more God-fearing and pious.

Ramadan is a month-long training program for Muslims to change their lives.

During this month, they engage in prayers seeking the forgiveness of Allah, recite and reflect on the Qur’an during night and day, perform the Taraweeh night prayers, and attend special Islamic classes and meetings.

Many faithful perform itikaf or retreat at mosques during the last ten nights of Ramadan, leaving all worldly pursuits to establish closer relationship with God.

Patience is another important quality one develops during Ramadan through fasting.

Allah has mentioned the word sabr or patience more than seventy times in the Qur’an and commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in the holy book.

When one fasts from dawn to dusk, giving up food and drink and marital sexual relations for several hours, he/she learns restraint and patience.

The Islamic nation needs men and women that are strong willed, who can stand upon the Qur’an and Sunnah and not waver in front of the enemies of God.

Ramadan encourages the faithful to engage in charitable and good activities beneficial to humanity.

The fasting in the holy month develops a strong feeling among the faithful that Allah is watching all their activities.

As a result, they will ask themselves before doing anything, ‘Does God love this action? Is God pleased with this action?’ Thus they gain the quality of watching oneself and staying away from showing off. According to a Hadith of the Prophet, Allah has said: “Fasting is for Me and I reward it.” (Bukhari) God singles out fasting from all other types of worship saying, “Fasting is for Me,” because no one knows whether you are fasting or not, except God. For example, when one is praying or giving charity or making tawaf or circumambulation around the Holy Kaaba, people watch him/her.

During Ramadan, Muslim faithful are trained to keep away from sins. The Prophet has advised them, “Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah has no need that he should leave his food and drink.” (Bukhari) This Hadith reminds Muslims that they should purify their manners. The Qur’an has stated that the Prophet Muhammad “was sent to perfect good manners.”

Ramadan is a month for Muslims to change their lives for the better, leaving behind un-Islamic and immoral practices, to lead an exemplary life. The Prophet has said, “Every human being sins and the best of the sinners are those who repent.” (Ibn Maajah) God provides many opportunities to repent and seek His forgiveness. Allah says in the Qur’an: ” Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (39:53)

Muslims do not fast because of medical benefits, which are of a secondary nature.

Fasting has been used by patients for weight management, to rest the digestive tract and for lowering lipids.

There are many adverse effects of total fasting as well as of crash diets.
Islamic fasting is different from such diet plans because in Ramadan fasting, there is no malnutrition or inadequate calorie intake.

The physiological effect of fasting includes lowering of blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol and lowering of the systolic blood pressure.

In fact, Ramadan fasting would be an ideal recommendation for the treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity, and essential hypertension.

In 1994, the first International Congress on “Health and Ramadan,” held in Casablanca, entered 50 extensive studies on the medical ethics of fasting.

Muslim faithful compete with one another in charitable activities during Ramadan to win Allah’s pleasure and reward. Abdullah bin Abaas said, “The Prophet was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when angel Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month.” (Bukhari) The Prophet said, “He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will receive the same reward as him, without nothing being reduced from the fasting person’s reward.” (Tirmudi) Inspired by this Hadith, Muslims spend huge amounts of money during the fasting month for distributing iftar meals at mosques and public places. Millions of worshippers get iftar meals at the Grand Mosque in Makkah and Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah as they break their fast jointly without facing any difficulty.

Muslims all over the world fast during the holy month, thus strengthening their unity and solidarity and they need this unity more than anytime before to confront growing challenges.

All the teachings of Islam urge the Muslim faithful to stand together and should not disintegrate. Unfortunately, we see Muslims kill one another in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other parts of the world, making their enemies happy.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you — when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided. And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful. And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment. (3:103-105)

Fasting in Ramadan teaches Muslims to learn discipline, which is essential for them to make progress. The Prophet has made us adhere to discipline and strictness, strictness that does not lead to fanaticism or going outside the bounds that God has laid down. One cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as it will not be accepted by God. They are also not allowed to delay breaking fast with the aim of getting more rewards. Muslims should learn to be very strict in their lives, because they are people of an important message.

Amongst the nights of Ramadan, there is one special night of Power (Qadr), which is highlighted in Surah Al-Qadr, saying it has the significance of being better than a thousand months. (Qur’an 97:3).

This was the night when Qur’an was revealed to mankind. Prophet Muhammad urged Muslims to seek this night in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Fasting made compulsory during Ramadan to make the faithful thank God for revealing the Holy Qur’an during this month as a blessing and guidance for the mankind.

Qur’an says: “The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey — then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.” (2:185)

Mataf expansion

Expanded Grand Mosque ready for Ramadan

SUPERVISING EXPANSION: Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of
the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques, inspects the Haram expansion project on Thursday.

Friday 27 June 2014

The second phase of the massive ongoing expansion project inside Makkah’s Grand Mosque is almost complete, with the first floor area for circumambulation around the House of God, known as the “mataf,” expected to be open for pilgrims during the month of Ramadan.

The worksite was inspected by Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque Affairs, on Thursday.

“The first floor and ground floors are 100 percent ready for prayer and are fully equipped with elevators and automated stairs, while the second floor is about 80 percent ready,” Al-Sudais said.

The second phase involves the eastern side of the mataf and extends from Al-Fatah gate to the Umrah gate, where expansion work being carried out around the clock under the direct supervision of high-ranking officials from the Saudi Binladin Group, the project contractor.

The second phase, meanwhile, is slated to span 25,000 square meters, almost double the area of the first phase.

The area can accommodate up to 75,000 worshippers per hour, said a senior official.

In addition, the old passageway was dismantled and reconstructed to facilitate the movement of pilgrims inside the mataf.

Contractors will stop work for nearly four months given the huge influx of pilgrims between the Ramadan and Haj seasons.

The capacity of the mataf area is expected to increase from 50,000 pilgrims per hour to 130,000 pilgrims when the expansion is fully completed.

Costing over SR100 billion, the King Abdullah Expansion Project is designed to increase the mosque’s capacity to more than two million worshippers.

Makkah visitors,

park your vehicles here

KEEPING POLLUTING VEHICLES OUT: Authorities have prepared huge parking lots
outside the holy city of Makkah for intending Umrah pilgrims and visitors.
Friday 27 June 2014

Over a million visitors are expected to arrive to Makkah during the holy month of Ramadan, according to authorities in the holy city, who said that they have taken all necessary measure to ensure parking spaces are available for their vehicles.

Five locations have been allocated for parking purposes in Ramadan, they said, adding that the parking area will accommodate more than 45,000 vehicles at one time.

“We have allocated a total of 1,500,000 square meters of parking space in five locations in the city,” Osama Al-Zaitony, senior official of Makkah Municipality, said Thursday.

Those are on Makkah-Al-Madinah Highway, Makkah-Jeddah Highway, Makkah-Taif (Al-Sail) Road, Makkah-Taif (Al-Kar) Road and Makkah-Laith Road and are located at entrances points in Makkah.

Al Zaitony said the parking lots will be equipped with proper infrastructure in addition to adequate facilities such as toilets, restrooms and temporary canteens.

Urging pilgrims and visitors to the holy city not to park cars inside Makkah to avoid traffic congestion, Al-Zaitony noted that the new parking location will be in addition to the current parking facilities at Kudai, Al-Umrah and Aziziyah.

Ali Al-Zahrani of Makkah traffic police told Arab News that restriction of smaller vehicles inside the holy city and enhancing the public transportation system have been successful in reducing the number of traffic violations in the city, which is the highest in Kingdom.

He said that extra traffic police would be deployed to control the mobility of vehicles during Taraweeh in the city, adding that special arrangements have been made to assist motorists driving between Makkah and Madinah.

He noted that police would be using the GPS technology in the holy city to determine the location of accidents.

‘Observe Ramadan in the true spirit of Islam’

THE SPIRIT: Worshippers listen to the Friday sermon under
a blazing summer sun in the courtyard of the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
Saturday 28 June 2014

mams in mosques throughout the Kingdom, including those in Makkah and Madinah, welcomed on Friday the holy month of Ramadan with an immense sense of piety and requested their respective congregation to strictly follow the teachings of the Holy Qur’an during the fasting period.

The Supreme Court in Riyadh called on all Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent of the lunar month of Ramadan on Friday evening. In its announcement, the court requested that whoever spots the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan to report to the nearest court and register his testimony, or report to the authority of the regional governorate.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense warned citizens and residents of the common accidents that occur in the kitchens during the preparation of iftar (meal taken to break the fast).

“The accidents are mainly caused due to high temperatures and the failure to follow proper methods in dealing with the tools to prepare food during the frying process,” spokesman for the Civil Defense Col. Abdullah Al-Orabi Al-Harthy said Friday.

He pointed out that more than 30 percent of fire accidents in houses during Ramadan happen while frying food before the iftar time. He said that during this time, there is an increased power consumption which leads to some electrical outages.

In Makkah, the imam requested worshippers to observe the holy month in the true spirit of a Muslim according to the teachings of the Islamic faith. Ramadan is a month full of happiness and piety for all Muslims, the imam said, pointing out that it’s a month which advocates peace, unity and understanding among Muslims. The Holy Qur’an was first revealed to humanity during the latter part of this month.

In his sermon on Friday, the imam of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah said the holy month provides a good opportunity for Muslims to cultivate healthy habits.

Explaining the values and virtues of the month, he said good deeds performed by Muslims during this month will be richly rewarded by Almighty Allah. “Those who perform good deeds will enter paradise in the hereafter, while those who ignore the tenets of the religion would meet with severe punishments.”

The imam also reminded Muslims to give Zakat (charity) during this month and refrain from all actions abhorred by the religion.

An imam in King Abdullah Mosque in Malaz in Riyadh described Ramadan as the month of charity and requested Muslims to help the needy to alleviate poverty. “Helping the less fortunate is a must during the holy month,” he stressed.

He also requested members of the congregation to cultivate the habit of fasting among their children during this holy month.

An imam in another mosque said that Islam allows the sick to abstain from fasting but he stressed that they have to feed the poor to compensate for the days they don’t fast.

Pregnant and lactating mothers can refrain from fasting but they have to cover the lost days when they return to normal.

“The month is an ideal opportunity for people to unlearn bad habits and cultivate healthy behavioral patterns.”

Quoting an Islamic reference, an imam at a mosque in Nasseriyah said: “A day of fasting during this holy month will keep a Muslim away from hell for 70 years. ”

"You must mentally prepare yourselves to perform meritorious work during the holy month of Ramadan which comes once a year,” the imam said.

Emphasizing the importance of fasting, he said : “The fasting person seeks closeness to Allah by avoiding all desires, giving love of Allah precedence over the love for himself.”

"In fasting there are advantages, benefits and attainment of rewards and proximity to the Creator.”

Exhorting Muslims to step up their pious and charitable acts and do deeds that strengthen social and filial ties in the month of Ramadan, he further said that they should vie with each other in obeying the commands of God by doing virtuous deeds and helping others.

"Fasting in Ramadan serves as a shield against evil temptations as the gates of Jahannam (Hell) will be shuttered and the gates of Jannah (Paradise) will be wide open,” he said, adding that it is an opportunity to immerse oneself in worship during the month, which is also an occasion for joy and communal celebrations.
