‘Performing Umrah with family is very pleasurable’

Monday 23 June 2014

Pakistani pilgrim Ashraf Bukhari finds pleasure in visiting Saudi Arabia with family time and again to perform Umrah. “I have visited the Kingdom several times for Haj and Umrah,” he told Arab News.

Bukhari applauded the government’s efforts to expand the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims who come for Haj and Umrah.

“We are grateful to Saudi Arabia for its special services to pilgrims. We feel it since the time of our arrival in the Kingdom,” he said.

Bukhari was impressed by the Kingdom’s endeavors to carry out massive expansion projects at the two holy mosques, saying it would be recorded in the history in golden letters.

“I like the central region of Madinah,” he said. “There are several five-star hotels and other residential buildings as well as many shopping centers and restaurants around the Prophet’s Mosque. This makes it easy for pilgrims to buy clothes, souvenirs and other requirements.”

Regarding the cost of his Umrah trip, Bukhari said he found it reasonable. “I have paid around SR5,000 for this trip. During Ramadan, prices will go up because of high demand,” he added.

Emergency plan for holy cities finalized

Masjid al Haram, Makkah
Monday 23 June 2014

Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Naif approved a plan for emergency situations in Makkah and Madinah during Ramadan.

Suleiman bin Abdullah Al-Amro, director general of Civil Defense, said: “All arrangements and preparations were made to ensure the implementation of measures to cope with emergency situations during Ramadan.”

The plan will take time and geography into consideration as the number of pilgrims and visitors will increase in the two cities, especially during the last ten days of the holy month.

AL-Amro lauded the support provided by Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah and Prince Faisal bin Salman, governors of Makkah and Madinah regions, in this regard.

He said that the number of security personnel deployed in the two cities will depend on the expected increase of pilgrims and visitors this year, adding that the police will be supported with advanced vehicles and equipment, he said.

An awareness campaign will be launched delivering messages on public safety through SMS, televisions and street signs.

5.3 million slated to perform Umrah before Ramadan

Worshipers walk around the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
Tuesday 24 June 2014

The number of Muslims performing the Umrah pilgrimage is expected to increase with the advent of Ramadan.

The latest statistics reveal that around 5.3 million pilgrims have entered the Kingdom up until Sunday since the beginning of the Umrah season.

The Ministry of Health said in a press statement that it would continue preparations for the Umrah season by spreading awareness among pilgrims on precautionary and preventive measures to stay healthy.

The ministry also stressed the importance of vaccinations, which should be taken by pilgrims to protect against diseases.

The ministry also said that it is closely monitoring the health condition of incoming Umrah pilgrims in the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah from the day of their arrival until they leave the country. The Ministry of Haj has confirmed that no Umrah pilgrim has been affected by the coronavirus during the current season.

Haj pilgrims face ‘food supply crisis’

Pilgrims walk in a tunnel between the Grand Mosque in Makkah and Mina.
Tuesday 24 June 2014

Thirty catering companies say they are unable to meet the government’s requirements to provide food for Haj pilgrims this year because they do not have enough visas for seasonal foreign workers.

“The companies have made their stance clear to the Ministry of Commerce, which grants visas for foreign workers recruited for the Haj.” The visas were previously processed and approved on the e-portal of the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), said Al-Sharif Shaker Al-Harithy, a member of the chamber’s food committee.

According to the new regulations, seasonal visa applications would be sent from the Commerce Ministry to the Labor Ministry, which would pass the visas to recruitment offices to hire workers.

Al-Harithy warned that hiring of workers through recruitment offices would raise costs by 50 percent. This would also make the Haj more expensive and affect the low-cost pilgrimage program.

Al-Harithy argued that recruitment offices would not be able to supply sufficient and experienced workers for catering companies. Untrained workers would provide poor services, which could result in catering firms facing legal action for not fulfilling the quality requirements of their contracts, he said.

Al-Harithy said that until last year, Tawafa organizations recruited seasonal catering workers from the countries of pilgrims. This ensured pilgrims had meals familiar to them. The cooks were recruited from leading restaurants in those countries.

Al-Harithy said the MCCI committee has been striving to avoid a crisis in the food supply to pilgrims this year.

He urged the Commerce Ministry to reinstate the old system of issuing seasonal visas, at least until the end of this Haj season. He claimed that one third of the catering companies have already signaled that they would not be able to work this season.

Al-Harithy has also asked the ministry to draft new regulations after consulting the catering committees of various chambers of commerce.

He said the recruitment of seasonal laborers through recruitment offices does not comply with a decision taken by the Council of Ministers three months ago, which stated that the issue of seasonal visas should not be done through recruitment offices.

Catering companies supply an estimated 50 million hot and other meals to pilgrims during the Haj season.

ALJREIC opens 1743-room Anjum Hotel in Makkah

Jun 24, 2014

The 1743-room Anjum Hotel, which is situated close to The Grand Mosque in Makkah, has opened its doors to its first customers.

It owner and operator, Abdul Latif Jameel Real Estate Investment Company (ALJREIC), confirmed to HotelierMiddleEast.com that the property had its soft opening on June 9.

“The hotel will be a huge contribution to the expected increase of tourists coming to the city of Makkah,” said ALJREIC chairman Yousef Abdul Latif Jameel

“The various departments have already set the horses to welcoming our guests with the five stars standards and services. We’ll be keeping close eyes on the operation to ensure the healthy run of the hotel and the satisfaction of all our guests.”

Tailoring the service at the hotel to the needs of visitors to the holy city, the hotel has a ‘Manasek Desk’ to assist guests throughout their religious rituals. It also has 26 elevators to provide rapid transportation across the property.

Guests have a choice of four restaurants and lounges; Karam and Joud restaurants are set to welcome up to 3,500 guests and serve a wide variety of international and authentic cuisine, prepared by multi-national professional catering team. During Ramadan, they will also serve Iftar and Sohour.

Another feature of the hotel is its ‘Kids World’, featuring a specialised, trained team to look after children between the ages of 3 and 7. Meanwhile, the ‘Azad Floors’ offer premium services to its guests.

Speaking to HotelierMiddleEast.com at the recent Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, ALJREIC CEO Claude Chesnais explained how the hotel would look to set itself apart from the major hotel chains, which have significantly expanded their presences in the city in recent years.

“We want to be known as a very high quality, Saudi company. And I think if we manage this, there will be pride in that,” he said.

“If you take the international companies, the quality of service they have in Makkah is not as good as in Dubai, for example. They don’t have as much supervision over there. They are living off the name.

“Most of the vice presidents can’t visit, so you have a GM there on his own and owners of the hotel are probably very involved too. We are everything: we are the owners, we have a very strong management team and we control everything.”

Anjum Hotel marks the first phase of the Jabal Al Kaaba project, with ALJREIC expecting to add 7,000 rooms in two more phases over the next seven years.

Other Makkah projects being planned by the company include a 10,500-room complex around 1.5 kilometres away from the Grand Mosque over the next five years and another 4,500-room complex over the next seven years.

Ramadan crescent unlikely on Friday

Wednesday, 25 June 2014 - 27 Shaban 1435 H

MAKKAH — It will not at all be possible to sight the Ramadan crescent on Friday and therefore, Saturday will not be the first day of the fasting month of Ramadan, Makkah daily reported on Tuesday quoting astronomers.

"It will simply not be possible to sight the crescent on Friday because on that day the moon will completely disappear from the skies before sunset," said Khaled Al-Zaaq, member of the Arab Union for Space Sciences and Astronomy.

Zaaq, who is also a member of the Islamic project to sight the moon, said in most regions of the Kingdom, the moon will disappear on Friday before sunset.

He said the criterion of moon sighting differs from one Islamic country to another. "Some countries use only naked eyes, while others employ astronomical calculations," he said.

Daaq said fasting hours also differ from one country to another depending on their geographical locations. "When we go north of the Equator, the days will be longer than the nights so people will have to fast longer hours," he said.

He noted that fasting hours in Russia, for instance, are 22 while they are only nine in Brazil and Australia.

Hassan Basurah, head of astronomy section at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, said there are many regions in the Kingdom in which the moon cannot be sighted on Friday. "The digital technology will play a pivotal role in the sighting of the moon during the next two years," he said.

Saleh Abu Siaileek, professor of Sunnah studies at Imam Mohammed Bin Saud Islamic University, said the crescent will also not be sighted on Friday in Egypt and Sudan.

Al-Souli was addressing a press conference on Monday, which was also attended by high ranking officers from the Makkah police.

Al-Souli said all security sectors will participate in maintaining the safety and security of pilgrims and visitors during the holy month of Ramadan.

"We will always be there to provide pilgrims with consummate services to ensure them with an atmosphere conducive for worship, supplication and prayer," he said.

Qur’an available in 72 languages at Grand Mosque

Wednesday 25 June 2014

The Kingdom has almost completed elaborate and comprehensive arrangements for Qur’an recitation at Makkah’s Grand Mosque ahead of Ramadan. The Qur’an is now available in 72 different foreign languages.

“We have developed a state-of-the-art technology system that any smartphone user with a barcode reader application can use to download the Qur’an software inside the Grand Mosque in the language of choice,” Ali Hamid Al Nafji, a senior official at the Presidency of the Grand Mosque Affairs, told Arab News. “The Qur’an, along with commentary and translation, is available for download in most of the world’s major languages, including Sinhalese, Telugu, Somali and Chinese,” he said.

The number of shelves has been doubled to include more storage space for the holy books.”The number of shelves inside the Grand Mosque has been increased to 4,000 shelves containing 950,000 copies of the Qur’an in different languages for worshippers to read,” he said.

The six imams appointed to lead the evening taraweeh and pre-dawn tahajjud prayers include Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, Saud Al-Shuraim, Abdullah Al-Johani, Maher Al-Muaiqly, Khaled Al-Ghamdi and Bandar Baleelah.

Al-Sudais will lead the taraweeh prayers on the conclusion of the Qur’an at the end of Ramadan.

Security arrangements are in place to cope with the influx of pilgrims, with 2,000 surveillance cameras installed at strategic points inside the Grand Mosque and the central area in Makkah to monitor crowds, according to police officials.

Makkah Regional Police Chief Maj. Gen. Abdulaziz Al-Asoli said in a press conference that special attention would be paid to crowd management inside the mosque.

Traffic police officials also announced that vehicular movement would be strictly prohibited during Ramadan to facilitate pedestrian movement.

Madinah harvest ‘delayed by expat worker shortage’

Farmers collect dates as the palm dates harvest season begins in Disa,
around 200 km from the Saudi city of Tabuk, in this August 12, 2013 file photo.
Wednesday 25 June 2014

Madinah date farmers say they are in trouble because they do not have enough workers to harvest this season’s crop following the crackdown on illegal workers by the Labor Ministry.

“Farm owners normally hire workers ahead of the date season but now many of them are reluctant to do so. At the same time, it is not easy to find expatriate workers willing to work on the farms,” Mohsin Al-Alawi, a Saudi farmer told Arab News over the phone.

He said the Labor Ministry has agreed to allow farmers to recruit seasonal workers from abroad but claimed workers would probably only arrive once the season is over because of lengthy government hiring procedures.

“Ramadan is the best time to make a good profit. But by the time the ministry grants visas for workers, the market will be flooded with dates from Qassim and other regions and the price will go down,” Al-Alawi said.

He said that there is a huge demand for dates from pilgrims. “Every pilgrim buys on average at least 5 kilograms of dates from Madinah,” he said.
According to sources, at least 2,000 workers are needed to work over a period of two months on the date farms.

The industry, from harvesting to sales, is dominated by expatriate workers in Madinah and other regions of the Kingdom.

The Ramadan dates season is worth SR1 billion, according to the Madinah Chamber of Commerce.

Dates from Madinah usually arrive first on local markets, followed by harvests from Al-Ahsa and Al-Kharj in July and August. Dates have ripened early because of rising temperatures.

Al-Rabeah and Al-Rothana dates have already started arriving at markets in Jeddah, but are of poor quality and expensive, say customers. There has been a delay of other varieties including Ajwa, Al-Hilia, Lubana and Helwa.

“I have been buying Al-Rothana dates for the last 40 years but the quality is not good this year,” said Eda Al-Barabba. He said prices would fall with the onset of Ramadan but most people would have already bought dates at the high prices.

Al-Rothana is a popular variety of Madinah dates and traders are expecting brisk business over the next week.

New Jeddah airport to open mid-2015

Thursday 26 June 2014

The new King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah will open in the middle of 2015 with an increased capacity, a leading official said here on Tuesday.

Abdul Hamid Abul Ora, director of the airport, told Arab News: “The new airport will have a capacity of 30 million passengers in the first phase, 45 million in the second phase, and up to 80 million in the final phase.”

The airport management is currently focusing on completing the first phase on schedule, he said.

Abul Ora said there are penalties stipulated by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) for those airlines failing to offer proper services for passengers, including adhering to set flight schedules.

Responding to a question, Abul Ora said there are plans to establish an air cargo village after the development of the new airport, to cater for the nearly 20 percent annual growth in cargo. These villages in other parts of the world have been highly profitable, he said.

Commenting on the recurring air-conditioning problems at the South Terminal Lounge, he said a budget has been allocated for upgrades there and at the north terminal lounges.

He said temporary units have been brought in at the south terminal while the work is under way. Each substitute unit has a cooling capacity of 50 tons. They are being installed in departure and arrival halls for a month, he said.

He said a duty-free market would be launched at the new airport.

In response to a question, he said the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus outbreak has not affected the number of passengers at the airport. The Ministry of Health has introduced stringent precautionary measures at the airport, he said.

He confirmed that a hotel would be opened at the airport for pilgrims if flights are canceled or delayed. Companies contracted to GACA would build the facility, which would have 117 rooms and suites, he said.

Barbershops near Haram

come under government scanner

Thursday 26 June 2014

The Makkah Municipality is cracking down on public utilities around the Grand Mosque, such as barbershops, in order to ensure their abidance with health regulations.

This comes as part of the municipality's ongoing campaign targeting the local markets in the holy city and aims to ensure the services offered to the public are consistent with the best health practices and in accordance with the standards set by the local authorities.

Officials told Arab News that the sanitation and hygienic conditions, particularly at barbershops, are of extreme importance and among the municipality's top priorities, adding that not only is the municipality inspecting razors and shaving tools, but also checking on the premises to make sure the chairs of customers are clean.

“We have confiscated 75 chairs from barbershops in the Haram area” Naif Al Hazmi, head of public health in the Makkah Municipality, said Wednesday.

He said the authorities are checking on other utilities including date shops and eateries to ensure they adhere to health standards in the city, which will be witnessing a significant increase in the number of pilgrims during the holy month of Ramadan.

Moreover, the municipality is conducting a public auction offering spaces to the investors interested in opening barbershops in the Marwah area, which is close to the Grand Mosque and convenient for pilgrims to reach after completing saei.

The auction fetches nearly SR10 million to the Makkah Municipality every year for allocating space for barbers during Ramadan and Haj.

According to officials, Pakistanis dominate the barbershop business with nearly 90 percent of shops operated by Pakistanis.

However, the Labor Ministry aims to Saudize barber jobs and the General Organization of Technical and Vocational Training has embarked on providing training to Saudi youth who wish to learn this profession.
