The Civil Defense in Makkah had to evacuate 381 people from a 17-floor hotel in Makkah on Monday after a fire broke out.

No one was hurt in the blaze because of the hotel's safety system, said Col. Saleh Al-Olayani, spokesman of the Civil Defense.

52 domestic Haj firms
face penalty for pricey services
Tuesday, 27 May 2014

JEDDAH – Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar said the ministry has started procedures to take punitive measures against 52 domestic Haj service providers for charging exorbitant rates for their services during the last Haj.

A report against these companies has been presented to the higher level ministerial committee to examine it and take penal action against the violators.

“The punitive measures include suspension of service for one or more Haj seasons, and fines up to SR100,000. I hope these actions would help stop domestic Haj firms from exorbitantly increasing their service charges,” he said, highlighting the ministry’s keenness in ensuring quality services at affordable rates and marginal profits.

Hajjar said the ministry approved an executive bylaw for the Coordination Council of domestic Haj service providers in this regard.

“The Council will strive to develop the domestic Haj service sector and guarantee better services to the pilgrims.”

Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency, the minister also disclosed that the allocation of tent sites for both domestic and foreign pilgrims at the holy sites has been completed four months before the annual pilgrimage, which is due in early October.

Hajjar said the ministry has completed allocation of tent sites well in advance this year. “This shows that the ministry’s preparedness and relentless efforts to serve the pilgrims months before the next Haj season.”

He noted that additional space for the service providers within their tent sites has been allocated without charging any additional fee.

This space will be utilized for public services like medical clinics and administration office.

The concerned authorities have been directed to increase the number of toilets at the tent premises of both domestic and foreign pilgrims, Hajjar added.

Meanwhile, the Consulate General of the Kingdom in Dubai said electronic fingerprints are now compulsory for all UAE residents aged between 12 and 77 who wish to perform Haj and Umrah.

In a circular sent out to registered Haj and Umrah agencies, the consulate designated “Tasheel” centers at the Wafi Mall in Dubai to register individual fingerprints for a “symbolic” fee.

The proper identification document required for this procedure is the passport.

Registered agencies have received a username and password as login information to book appointments electronically for consumers. The consulate said the system will reduce the waiting time at various entry points for pilgrims.

set for launch in Makkah

An artist's impression of the planned project.

Tuesday, 27 May 2014 - 28 Rajab 1435 H

MAKKAH — Makkah governorate and the municipality have designated a one million square meter area for a project that will defend Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and explain the true nature of the Prophet's teachings, Makkah daily reported.

Called "Peace be upon the Prophet," the project is described as a city designed to combat the malicious campaign launched against the Prophet of Islam in several countries. The project will be located outside the Haram boundaries on the Al-Haramain Expressway and will give non-Muslims a firsthand view of the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh) and Islam.

The city will include the project’s main headquarters, an exhibition, university, electronic gate center, library, printing press, translation center, hotels and other facilities. The project will also oversee the printing of an encyclopedia on the Prophet (pbuh) his companions and Islam.

The encyclopedia will include various subjects about the Qur'an and Sunnah in 500 volumes, covering 350,000 pages and consisting of three million titles. The encyclopedia has been registered with the Ministry of Information in the Kingdom, and in other countries such as Egypt and Malaysia, and the final touches are being given to 80 volumes.

The exhibition will consist of Allah’s 99 names, an explanation of the Prophet’s character and manners, Islam and other prophets and messengers. The library will contain everything that has been published about the Prophet and Islam in Arabic and several other languages. The media center will include a number of satellite channels and media in different languages to highlight the cultural and educational teachings of Islam. The electronic center will include a number of websites dedicated to the Prophet (pbuh) and Islam.

The translation center will be responsible for translating all works into various languages, and will commence with translations into commonly-spoken languages first, followed by other languages. The printing press has already received the necessary license from the Ministry of Information and will publish all documents regarding the project. The publishing center has also finalized the necessary legal procedures to establish an electronic publishing gateway dedicated to the project.

The university will specialize in the Qur'an and Shariah, and graduates will be granted certificates in such subjects.

Policeman faces punitive action
for dishonoring the Kaaba

Thursday 29 May 2014

Makkah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah has expressed his indignation over a policeman putting his leg on the Holy Kaaba while controlling the crowd at the House of God’s black stone corner recently.

The governor urged Makkah region’s police chief Maj. Gen. Abdul Aziz Al-Souli to investigate the incident and take strict administrative action against the officer for his actions.

The image of the man putting his leg just above the stone went viral on social media sites.

Prince Mishaal instructed the police chief to hold special awareness programs for security, military and civilian officers working at the two holy mosques to respect the sacredness of these vicinities and to deal with pilgrims and visitors decently.

Saudi bloggers have condemned the policeman’s action and said such people who do not respect the place’s sanctity should not be appointed to maintain law and order at holy sites.

One blogger, who is studying in the UK on the King Abdullah Foreign Scholarship Program, urged Saudi security officers to learn from British royal guards who stand for hours like idols.

“We should have a special force for the two holy mosques, who will be physically fit and wear military dress especially designed to suit the holy place,” he said.

He also pointed out that these officers should be given special training to deal with worshippers and visitors politely.

“We are talking about the holiest place in the world and not Buckingham Palace,” he added.

Is it correct that visas for Umrah are currently not being issued. A friend was planning to travel next week from the GCC but no luck. Then he tried back in India, still no luck. The authorities are declining visas due to the spread of the MERS virus.

This must be from local authorities only, as far as Saudi is concerned, I don't think they have put a stop to anything.

Outrage as Saudi policeman rests shoe on Makkah's sacred Kaaba

Manama: The Governor of Makkah has ordered a probe in the case of a policeman leaning on the Kaaba with his shoes against the wall.

Prince Mishal Bin Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz said that such an attitude could not be tolerated and called for disciplinary action against the policeman for failing to live up to the privilege and honour of serving in such a place.

In Arab culture, displaying the sole of one's foot or touching someone, or something sacred, with a shoe or with feet is considered highly offensive.

A picture of the policeman leaning on the sacred cube triggered a heated debate on social networks in the Muslim world with reactions ranging from gentle understanding of his condition after hours of confronting challenges to outright condemnation for not respecting the sanctity of the place.

Prince Mishal told the head of the Makkah police Abdul Aziz Al Sooli to hold dedicated workshops and training sessions to educate the security and civilian staff at the Grand Mosque on ways of behaving and of dealing with people in order to offer the best services, local news site Sabq reported on Tuesday.

Officials initially said that the security man was not wearing shoes, but rubber sockets that staff at the Grand Mosque used regularly.

In 2008, in a display of his revulsion to the American occupation of his country, Iraqi journalist Muntadhar Al Zaidi hurled his shoes at then US president George Bush as they conducted a press conference in Baghdad.

Muslims often refrain from allowing their shoes to be turned upside down in order to avoid the sole from 'facing God'. It is also customary to take off shoes before entering mosques and homes.

Sithy Zuveniya Fazli, 55, from a town near Colombo in Sri Lanka, had completed her Umrah pilgrimage and was traveling back to Colombo on Friday when she complained of chest pain as the Saudia flight landed in Riyadh to pick more passengers.

The patient was disembarked in Riyadh upon the advice of the cabin crew.
