Sects divide ummah, says Haram imam

An imam at the holy mosque said that Muslim solidarity is essential for survival.
2 March 2014

Sheikh Saleh Al-Talib, an imam at Makkah’s Grand Mosque, said that Muslim solidarity is essential for survival.

“We live in a world that only respects the strong and the united,” he said during the Friday sermon. “Muslims don’t want another religion to rule them, so they must unite. We are in need of brotherhood, true conduct that achieves our goals and justice to prevail in our societies. We need equality to live in a state of peace and worship.”

Undoing disunity is the responsibility of the nation’s leaders and intellectuals, he said.

“Nations achieve their own unity, so why is it that our nation is fragmented even though we have the resources and factors for success,” he said. “Unity will not be achieved unless we have a fixed reference that unites us and creates a renaissance. This reference is represented in the Qur’an and the tradition of the Prophet (peace be upon him). We should follow in the footsteps of his companions.

“Scholars should gather the Muslim nation under one reference and highlight right from wrong. Having multiple religious sects and using religious pretexts to achieve political ambitions contributes to the nation’s disunity,” he said.

Haram sermons to be translated for non-Arabs

in English and Urdu

2 March 2014

Live translation of the Friday sermons in Makkah’s Grand Mosque has come as blessing for non-Arab worshippers.

The translation service, by qualified interpreters, is available in both English and Urdu. Part of the King Abdullah Project, the facility was formally launched on Friday.

Authorities have assigned a designated area in the Haram for worshippers who follow Urdu and English where headsets and compact audio devices are being provided by the Grand Mosque authorities. The device is connected to FM frequency that broadcasts the interpretation of the Arabic sermon delivered by the Imam of Haram, Abdul Hafez Al-Shubaiti.

A separate room for interpretation has been set up which is marked as sensitive, with qualified interpreters doing the job, a statement issued by the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs said.

King Fahd Gate area is the designated area for the translation service and headsets to worshippers will be provided only in this area.

It is not known whether mobiles that are equipped with FM frequency reception can also benefit from the service.

Shaikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, president of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs, is keen on translating the Friday sermons and other information from Arabic into foreign languages for the benefit of non-Arab worshippers. Al-Sudais mooted the idea to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, who has approved it, the statement said.

A similar translation facility will be launched in the Prophet Mosque in Madinah. The authorities recently introduced Urdu translation facilities for Islamic guidance and counseling section of the Grand Mosque in Makkah for the increasing number of Umrah pilgrims.

The translation facility is available only on Junoob Almakbariya in the south side of the Haram near the King Fahd gate and gate number 94.

Haj agreement signed with Jordan

3 March 2014

Jordan signed a Haj agreement with the Kingdom on Sunday. The agreement was signed by the visiting Jordanian Religious Affairs and Awqaf Minister Hayel Dawood and Saudi Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar in Jeddah.

“Saudi Arabia iterated to the Jordanian delegation that it is committed to the continuation of the 20 percent reduction in the quota for foreign pilgrims due to the expansion project of the Grand Mosque,” a statement from the Haj Ministry said.

The Jordanian authorities commended the Haj arrangements in the previous year and praised the expansion project of the Grand Mosque in Makkah to ease the hardship of the increasing number of pilgrims every year, said the statement.

The Saudi minister also stressed the need to train and provide appropriate orientation programs for Jordanian pilgrims prior to their embarkation.
The Haj Ministry said that it has fixed the quota at 5,600 Jordanian pilgrims for Haj 2014.

The Jordanian Consul General in Jeddah Ali Mahmoud Gazzawi and other senior officials from Jordan were also present in the meeting.
Aside from its own nationals, Jordan also arranges Haj for Arab-Israeli citizens.

2nd Global Conference entitled ''the Islamic World, Problems and Solutions''
held at headquarters of the Muslim World League in Makkah

Conference looks for solutions
to Muslim world’s problems

MEETING CHALLENGES: Makkah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah opens the MWL conference flanked
by Grand Mufti Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh, left, and MWL Secretary-General Abdullah Al-Turki.

3 March 2014

Makkah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah launched Sunday a conference organized by the Muslim World League at its headquarter in Makkah highlighting the problems faced by the Islamic world and possible solutions.

The conference is sponsored by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque King Abdullah.

“Saudi Arabia aims to instill a sense of solidarity in Muslims through their adhering to the teachings of the Qur’an and the tradition of the Prophet (peace be upon him),” Prince Mishaal said in his opening address. “Unity requires working to resolve our problems while adhering to our religion.”

“The crises and destabilization that many Muslim nations are suffering only confirm the need for spreading the culture of reconciliation, tolerance, moderation and support,” he said. “Muslim countries must stand united against attempts to undermine our religion and unity.”

Abdullah Al-Turki, secretary-general of the Muslim World League and a member of the Council of Senior Scholars, said that the issue of Islamic solidarity was also discussed in a previous summit held in Makkah in 2012.
The conference will achieve greater coordination between Muslim countries to tackle problems in keeping with international developments and transformations.

Abdullah Nejm Al-Deen, professor of Islamic economy at Makkah’s Umm Al-Qura University, said: “The conference reviews the situation of the Islamic World and discusses problems that can lead to division among Muslims.”
The theme of the conference, he said, discusses a wide rang of issues, including solidarity, religious obligation and political and sectarian challenges during the second series.

“The third series will review areas for potential solidarity in the political, economic, social, scientific, educational and media fields. The fourth axis relates to developments in the Arab world, including the issue of Palestine and Jerusalem, which have been isolated from the Muslim world and international organizations.”

The fifth axis deals with plans and projects that achieve solidarity and will discuss an initiative to establish a panel for reconciliation.

King: Unity key to Muslim success

3 March 2014

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah called upon Islamic scholars around the world to make combined efforts to strengthen unity and solidarity among Muslims to put an end to the debilitating conflicts in the Islamic world.

He also called for spreading a culture of tolerance, reconciliation and moderation among Muslims.

In his keynote address to the second international Islamic conference organized by the Muslim World League in Makkah on Sunday, the king referred to the plight of the Syrians suffering under an oppressive regime for the past three years.

Makkah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah read out the king’s speech. “These conflicts (in the Muslim world) have not only claimed innocent lives but also caused massive destruction. Moreover, they have undermined the security and stability of these countries,” the king said.

King Abdullah referred to Saudi efforts to reinforce unity and solidarity among Muslim countries. He referred to the Islamic summit hosted in Makkah two years ago for the purpose. He emphasized the role of nongovernmental organizations in achieving solidarity.

An important notice on Hajj fees

_______________

A message from the Ministry of Hajj

An important notice concerning the fees required from
the pilgrim who wishes to perform the obligation of Hajj

Ministry of Hajj
4 March 2014

Dear Pilgrim …

The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not receive any fees from the pilgrims of Allah's Sacred House.

The amount, which is paid by check, required from the Muslim who wishes to perform the obligation of Hajj represents the value of the basic services (housing and transportation at Mina and Arafat) provided for the pilgrim by the private sector.

The value of the services is collected on behalf of their providers via the United Agents Office, which also belongs to the private sector.

From Kurdistan, Record Number of Umrah Pilgrims

4 March 2014

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A record 6,000 pilgrims from the Kurdistan Region went for Umrah rituals to Mecca last month, authorities say, while travel agents say many were on their second or third visits and some clerics advise the faithful to help the poor rather than spending on repeated trips.

Sayid Abdullah, owner of a travel agency that organizes Hajj and Umrah packages, say there was no let-up in demand last month, even though some government employees were not paid their salaries due to a budget row between Erbil and Baghdad.

“Twenty percent of the people who come to me to buy Umrah packages go twice a year. For some, it is their third trip,” he explains.

Authorities say they have noticed the number of people going for Umrah has been on the rise every year. Over the past eight years, there has been a 30-fold increase in the number of travelers, according to official data.

While the Hajj pilgrimage can be performed during a designated season only once a year, there is no such restriction for Umrah rituals.

Idris Karim, a Friday preacher in Erbil, says that people cannot be stopped from performing the religious ritual, but that they should at times switch to helping the poor instead.

“Because Umrah is part of worship, we cannot prevent people from doing it,” he told Rudaw. “But someone who goes on the trip for the second time should help others instead.”

A cleric in Erbil says that giving the money to the needy and poor in Kurdistan is more of a good deed than making the journey more than once.

Travel agents in Erbil say that the whole trip to Saudi Arabia costs around $950, and that half of that amount is spent on buying presents and souvenirs for relatives.

The ministry of religious affairs says that in 2013 alone people in Kurdistan spent around $100 million on trips to Saudi Arabia.

According to a travel agent in Erbil, more than half of the Umrah pilgrims every year are women.

Abdullah says that he feels some of his clients go on Umrah only to prove themselves to their relatives and friends, who have already made the trip.

“To most people it is part of worshiping God, but to some others it is imitating their own relatives,” Abdullah believes.

Karim, the cleric in Erbil, says that going for Umrah is about maintaining a connection with God “But helping out the poor can serve the same purpose, too.”
