Expansion plan may turn
Makkah resident into a millionaire

Thousands of pilgrims pray at the Grand Mosque in Makkah in this file photo. Lot owners near the mosque
are expected to get a windfall payment under the government's expropriation plans to expand the holy mosque.
17 February 2014

A Makkah deliveryman who lives in a small, rundown house near the Grand Mosque may become a millionaire after the committee supervising the expansion of the mosque’s premises estimated his 120-square-meter house to be worth a whopping SR8 million.

Mustafa Al-Balushi, a deliveryman at a government institution, struggled to make ends meet and pay his electricity bills. He sometimes even resorted to borrowing money from friends and relatives. Mustafa had inherited the small house in which he lived.

“My father bought the dilapidated premises over 100 years ago. The committee supervising the expansion told me the house is worth SR65,000 per sqm,” he said.

“I plan to purchase a bigger house and a car. Everything changes in the blink of an eye through the power of the Almighty.” Nonetheless, Mustafa expressed his sadness at his forced relocation.

“I am used to hearing the call to prayer every day, not to mention the magical atmosphere we enjoy during Ramadan and our interaction with pilgrims and visitors. All the money in the world cannot compensate us for this,” he said.

Abbas Al-Tukhi, the owner of a real estate institution, said there are more than 12,000 families living in similar conditions who are entitled to compensation.

“Life as they know it will change overnight,” he said.

He said, “Many years ago, Makkah’s rich residents used to live in these neighborhoods, but sold their dilapidated houses and left the city. Only residents of limited means were left; fate seems to have landed on their side.”
Al-Tukhi said estimations vary according to proximity to the Grand Mosque. Streets situated right next to the mosque, for instance, are worth SR90,000 per square meter.

“Such exorbitant compensation sums will cause a huge boom in the local real estate market.

The costs of land, houses and rents are expected to rise by more than 30 percent following the dispensing of compensation,” he said.

Pilgrims worried over rising hotel charges

17 February 2014

Accommodation shortage in the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah and overcrowding are causing difficulties for local Umrah pilgrims.

Hotels and furnished apartments near the Grand Mosque in Makkah and Madinah are fully booked by the Umrah pilgrims coming from abroad.

“I couldn’t find a single room available for my family in Madinah over the weekend. We had to spend the night in the car and sleep in the cold weather,” said Syed Rafi, a Jeddah resident.

Mohammed Ghafour from Riyadh said, “All the hotels near the Grand Mosque in Madinah have been pre-booked by the Umrah agents. There are no rooms available for the local pilgrims. After a three-hour search, I was finally able to find a room in a hotel that was 10 km away from the mosque.”

Many of the local Umrah performers in Makkah prefer to stay in the Grand Mosque for the whole day whereas in Madinah they choose to sleep in the car. The unavailability of hotel accommodation has forced many of the local pilgrims to spend the cold nights in cars or outside the vicinity of the Haram.

“It would be a good idea for hotel managements to reserve some rooms and make them available for the local pilgrims near the Haram in Makkah and the Grand Mosque in Madinah. It will become easy for the families with children and the elderly to spend their spiritual time in the holy cities,” said Ahmed Sayeed, a local resident.

Moreover, several local Umrah pilgrims complained about the soaring prices of the rooms which they said had gone up by 10 percent.

Habib Ali, a pilgrim from Dammam said, “Affordable hotels near the Holy Haram in Makkah are ‘reserved’ and the available ones are too expensive for the average pilgrim.”

“Affordable Hotels in Makkah and Madinah charge SR600-SR700 per night. Those wanting better services have to pay up upward of SR 800 per night,” he added.

A hotel manager in Makkah said, “As there is an increase in the number of Umrah pilgrims from different countries, the shortage of accommodation has spiked the prices of hotel rooms.

Moreover, the Umrah agent’s packages are adversely impacting the hotel profits. Thus, with the availability of fewer rooms, the hotels tend to quote higher rates for the local pilgrims.”

He added that businessmen have made heavy investments in real estate in the two holy cities, so in order to reap a high return on their investment the hotel owners hike the room rates.

Many other hotel managers also held the pilgrims responsible for the rise in price as they are ever ready to pay excessive sums of money for accommodation.

Basheer Abdurub said, “We pay the room charges without bargaining because it is very difficult to find vacant hotel rooms.” He added that room rates have gone up since the development and expansion of the two holy cities as millions of Umrah and Haj pilgrims visit the Kingdom every year. And as the numbers of pilgrims will continue to increase, local pilgrims will have fewer choices and simply have to accept their situation.

Summaiya Jaffer from Dammam said, “Pilgrims are more concerned about the availability of the rooms than their rates these days.

In fact, hotel room rates have been an issue with local pilgrims for many years so there is nothing new about it.” Several local pilgrims suggested that the hotel managements should consider reserving a few rooms and make them available for locals at affordable rates.

Young Saudis guiding visitors

to ‘Makkah House’ at Janadriya

17 February 2014

MAKKAH – The Makkah Municipality has assigned more than 40 guides to receive visitors of “Makkah House” at the National Festival of Culture and Heritage at the Janadriya village outside Riyadh.

The municipality has conducted a number of workshops to train these guides to conduct their duties in a professional manner.

Assistant Makkah Mayor for Public Relations Sameer Tawakkal said the municipality has taken all necessary measures to ensure "Makkah House" is properly presented.

He pointed out a number of Makkah youths were chosen and trained and they were provided with the traditional clothes that would distinguish them as Makkawis.

"Brochures are also available in many languages that explain the traditional social life, lifestyle and economic situation of Makkah residents," he said.

The brochures also describe conditions in Makkah through the ages, he added.

Tawakkal claimed scientific studies have shown that Makkah lies exactly in the middle of the world.

He noted “Makkah House” was carefully designed to reflect the true lifestyles of the simple Makkawis.

Gifts from Makkawis’ houses were also being distributed, said Tawakkal.

A number of visitors to "Makkah House" have expressed their admiration of the presentation, which included traditional handcrafts.

The deputy supervisor of "Makkah House", Talal Al-Hendi said the house was built to reflect the traditional houses of Makkah that were built with stone.

Visitors will understand how older generations lived in Makkah, he said.

More airlines offering city

check-in services to Hajis

CONVENIENT: City check-in services offered by airlines with the support
of cargo companies have been widely welcomed by pilgrims.
18 February 2014

Several airlines have shown interest in providing the city baggage check-in service to foreign Haj pilgrims in coordination with cargo companies as the service has proved helpful to airlines in carrying out smooth operation of their out-going Haj flights without delay.

Sami Hassan Yahya Matari, general manager of Alpha Cargo Services, said his company was ready to extend the city check-in service for airlines in a more resourceful and organized manner to ensure the comfort of the guests of God.

“Following the successful operation with Air India in 2013, Biman Airlines of Bangladesh has signed a deal with us this year to provide the service,” Matari told Arab News.

The service will benefit thousands of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indonesian, Turkish, Malaysian and African pilgrims this year, and will help reduce overcrowding of pilgrims at airports. Saudi Arabian Airlines also introduced the service for the benefit of pilgrims traveling on its Haj flights.

Matari said his company has the manpower and logistics to provide the service, meeting the expectations of both pilgrims and airlines. “We provided city check-in services last year to pilgrims from Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, Chad, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone who traveled on Nas Air,” he added.

Pilgrims expressed their happiness over the service that makes their return journey both easier and comfortable. “Our experienced workers deliver the pilgrims’ baggage to the airlines’ check-in counters at airports after picking it right from their rooms in Makkah and Madinah,” Matari said, adding that Alpha introduced a system to track the movement of baggage.

K.P. Abdul Salam, managing director of Alpha, said many airlines had approached his company to provide the service. He thanked the foreign consulates for their support to provide check-in services to their pilgrims.

He said Alpha Cargo, which is an IATA certified agent, intends to expand its check-in and cargo handling facilities in the coming years to support the Saudi government’s endeavors to improve services being rendered to the guests of God.

“Our aim is to become a dependable city check-in provider for Saudi aviation industry, especially during the Haj and Umrah pilgrim seasons. A number of reputed carriers have already shown interest in availing of our services in the coming Haj season,” Salam said.

Tahseen-ul-Haque, the welfare officer at the Pakistan Consulate, told Arab News that the bus was traveling from Madinah to Makkah carrying 49 pilgrims from Egypt, Pakistan and Syria when it hit a truck head on at Al-Hijra, about 100 km from Madinah.

A source said that 13 Pakistanis sustained injuries.

The Pakistanis who were discharged from various hospitals are now at Pakistan House in Madinah. They are Munir Bibi, Mohammed Nawaz and Nazir Ahmed.

Four mosques win architecture award

MODERN ARCHITECTURE: Although the KFUPM Mosque incorporates a traditional mosque plan, the design abstracts
traditional elements of the mosque through its use of modern architectural vocabularies and exposed concrete surfaces.

18 February 2014

The Abdullatif Al-Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture was announced as a global platform to contribute to the development of contemporary mosque architecture globally.

Around 35 mosques that have been built in the Kingdom since 1970 were nominated for the award. Four of these won.

The award’s first edition offered SR2 million, which was distributed among the four winners. These were: the mosque at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Dhahran, the Al-Kindy Square Mosque, Four Communities Mosque in the Diplomatic Quarter of Riyadh and the umbrella project in the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

The first session concluded last week at the Dammam Sheraton under the aegis of Eastern Province Gov. Prince Saud bin Naif. Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the Board of Trustees and chairman of the General Authority for Tourism and Antiquities, was also present.

The launching of the award, which is managed by an executive committee, had been announced in Alkhobar to develop architecture by raising awareness of the importance of the role of structure and aesthetics.

Abdullah Al-Fozan, chairman of the Board of Directors at Al-Fozan Holding Co., said that the award aims to improve the construction of mosques in a modern environment while optimizing the traditional role of mosques.

He said: “The supreme objectives of the award are developing and enhancing environmentally interactive architecture and achieving an integral balance between a mosque’s beauty and spirituality and its surroundings.

“It is our hope that the award will highlight distinctive mosque designs around the world.”

He said: “The first edition of the award, to be given every three years, is up for grabs among mosques that have been constructed in the Kingdom since 1970.

“The following editions of the award will be held in other countries. A head office will be established to develop a database of winning candidates and designs so that their ideas can be reused by promising architects who wish to excel and contribute to the field.”

An endowment of SR60 million has been devoted to funding and ensuring the continuity of the award, he said.

The award also aims to support mosque construction globally and bring distinctive designs to the forefront.

“In the long run, the award aims to contribute to exploring the various trends that affect the development of mosque architecture,” Al-Fozan said.

The award is also designed to encourage architects, engineers, planners and designers, as well as students studying architecture, planning and engineering around the world to develop houses of worship both creatively and sustainably.

The initiative aims to provide a comprehensive database for organizations wishing to construct mosques. “It is vital that houses of worship set positive examples by ensuring sustainability at the social, cultural, economic and environmental levels,” he said.

The KFUPM Mosque is located on a platform at the edge of a small body of water on the campus. Although the building incorporates a traditional mosque plan, the design abstracts traditional elements of the mosque through its use of modern architectural vocabularies and exposed concrete surfaces.

The roof covering the square prayer hall is capped by a series of skylights arranged in a grid that filter in natural light.

This courtyard is designed as a fully transparent architectural feature rather than one that is enclosed from the sides and serves as a transitional space that leads to the mosque’s prayer hall.

Thin marble slabs and three wooden doors separate the courtyard from the adjacent prayer hall.

In the courtyard is a simple sunken water fountain that resembles a keyhole shape, located off-center to the southeast of the mosque’s central longitudinal axis.

The courtyard is also unusual because the mosque’s minaret is located inside it, again off-center, but to the northwest of the mosque’s central longitudinal axis.

In recognition to the award’s origin, the first edition covered mosques exclusively in the Kingdom.

KSA among top favorite
‘halal holiday’ destinations

19 February 2014

JEDDAH – Saudi Arabia is among the world’s favorite destinations for Muslim travelers, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

Malaysia tops the list, but Japan has also shown most improvement as it ramps up efforts to cash in on a growing market.

Saudi Arabia is on number five in this year’s top 10 rankings for “halal” friendly holiday destinations released by Singapore-based Muslim travel specialist Crescentrating.

The top ten in order are: Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Morocco, Jordan, Qatar and Tunisia.

The survey evaluates countries in terms of their attentiveness to the needs of Muslim travelers, including the presence and accessibility of halal restaurants with meat slaughtered to Islamic standards, and the provision of prayer rooms at airports, shopping malls and hotels.

“An increasing number of destinations are now keen on tapping into this segment and adapting their services to take into account the unique faith-based needs of Muslim travelers,” said Crescentrating chief executive Fazal Bahardeen.

He said the Muslim travel market was estimated to be worth $140 billion last year, accounting for almost 13 percent of the global total. It is expected to rise to $200 billion by 2020, he added.

The number of tourists visiting the Kingdom is estimated to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2% to 21.3 million over the period 2013-2023. The figures were discussed in a presentation delivered at the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities at the Riyadh leg of the annual Arabian Travel Market (ATM) roadshow.

Reed Travel Exhibitions portfolio director Mark Walsh said: “The travel and tourism sector’s direct contribution to Saudi Arabian GDP is projected to increase at a CAGR of 4% to SR83.7 billion by 2023. Put that into perspective it is equivalent to about 9% of current Saudi GDP, which is a great achievement.”

Ministry of Hajj expect to issue

''5 million Umrah visas'' this year

more than 2 million visas had been issued

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

In his statement to Al-Jazeera Satellite T.V., Dr. Bandar Al-Hajjar, the Minister of Hajj, announced that more than two million visas had been issued from the beginning of Safar till now, and that they expected that the number of visas that would be granted until the end of the `Umrah season in mid-Ramadan would reach more than 5 millions.

Moreover, His Excellency said that his ministry is presenting its new projects through its participation in Al-Jenadriyah festival this year, such as the e-path of Hajj which links the granting of the Hajj visas to the provision of service packs and the completion of the services offered to the pilgrims while they are still in their own countries, before they come to the Kingdom.

He added that this is for the convenience of the pilgrims and that this matter had been given a large display area at the exhibition this year. In addition to some other projects, there is one project that the Ministry of Hajj had submitted to His Royal Highness, who then approved it, which is the establishment of a service-integrated city to receive and bid farewell to the pilgrims in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah so as to include all government agencies and private sector bodies that provide services to pilgrims in one place.

He pointed out that those who work in the service of pilgrims in the ministry must not be allowed to work, whether they are working in government agencies or the private sector, until they partake in training courses. These training courses focus mainly on aspects of behavior and skills as well on the services for Hajj and `Umrah. Moreover, there are many different programs that are used to educate the staff and pilgrims.. Some of these are related to the ministry, and some are related to the Tawafa Establishments, the National Guides Establishment, Zamazemah United Office and other establishments that serve pilgrims. In addition, he added that they always pointed out to the offices of Hajj affairs abroad the need to train and educate the pilgrims before they come to Saudi Arabia.

The project of the King `Abdullah City for Pilgrims and Mu`tamirs aims at facilitating the provision of services and improving their quality so that all services offered to the pilgrims, whether by government agencies or the private sector, would be in one place to make it easier for the pilgrims to move from one place to another. Furthermore, in every project area there is a terminal for weighing the pilgrims' baggage to make it easy for pilgrims to leave the airport without their luggage Also, all means of transportation, including the subway and buses, are available at the terminal. In addition, accommodation is provided for the staff, pilgrims and Mu`tamirs and there are also museums and galleries of Hajj and Umrah. The main reason for having them is to reduce congestion and overcrowding and to ease the pilgrims’ movement from one place to another.

Moreover, Khalid Al-Hudhali, the general manager of financial and administrative affairs in the Ministry of Hajj and the general supervisor of the site of the Ministry of Hajj in Al-Jenadriyah, said that the festival this year is different from other festivals due to its visitors friendly design. It is designed in the shape of a hive which makes it easy for visitors to move easily and smoothly in order to be able to see all the displays. In addition, the festival uses advanced technologies, such as large displays to show documentaries that have been produced throughout the ages.

The exhibition also hosts cultural competitions for the public and prizes for the visitors that add up to at least 200 thousand gifts. It also displays a model of the King `Abdullah City for Pilgrims and Mu`tamirs.

Umrah surge sees Pakistanis top list

20 February 2014

Umrah pilgrims from abroad are pouring into the Kingdom, with the Ministry of Haj declaring that there has been a significant 14 percent increase in foreign pilgrims visiting Madinah already this season as compared to last year, with Pakistan accounting for the biggest chunk of pilgrims.

Revealing this, Ali Al-Ghamdi of the Haj Ministry said about two million pilgrims had already visited Madinah during the current season. After Pakistan, Indonesians, Iranians and Indians accounted for the most number of pilgrims in that order, he said.

The ministry was constantly monitoring the facilities and services provided to pilgrims. It had instructed Umrah companies to make special provisions for the elderly and physically weak pilgrims, he said.

The ministry was also conducting inspections of transport and housing facilities for pilgrims in Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah to ensure their safety besides putting in place measures to prevent foreign middlemen from dealing in these two vital sectors, he said.

Al-Ghamdi said that the ministry’s inspectors had booked 39 people for involvement in pilgrims’ housing that is to be dealt with only by Saudi citizens.

The ministry had, last year, carried out 1,948 inspection visits and 552 raids to check housing services.

The official said the ministry was also conducting inspection of pilgrims’ housing for compliance with safety standards. So far, it has carried out 372 visits and detected 152 violations of safety regulations in Makkah, he said, adding the ministry in Makkah region also inspected 9,009 housing units that had accommodated 1.3 million pilgrims last year.

MAKKAH — A 15 meter-high steel scaffolding collapsed in Ibrahim Al-Khalil Street of Makkah, damaging a car and a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims. Makkah Civil Defense spokesman Maj. Saleh Al-Elayani said rescue workers guided the pilgrims to safety. Six pilgrims, including a 5-year-old child, aboard the bus were injured and taken to King Abdulaziz and Al-Noor Specialist hospitals. They were in a stable condition.

UK minister tries hand

at Kaaba’s Kiswa embroidery

20 February 2014

A British minister visiting Saudi Arabia took part Wednesday in the challenging and intricate process of embroidering a Kiswa, the black silk cloth that covers the Kaaba.

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, the UK’s senior minister of state at the Foreign Office and Minister for Faith and Communities, made the attempt during a visit to a factory that produces the Kiswa.

During her tour of the facility, Warsi was given a detailed lecture on the history and advances in the manufacture of the cloth that veils the Kaaba, a building revered by many Muslims worldwide.

In a Twitter post, Warsi described her taking part in the making of the cloth as a “huge privilege.”

“Visited Kiswah factory in #Makkah. Huge privilege to take part in making of #Kaaba cloth for #hajj 2014,” Warsi tweeted.

She said she was on an official visit to the kingdom and to perform the pilgrimage of Umrah, noting that “huge opportunities exist for #British firms” in Makkah.

“Great to see British @pbworld win major contract to support #Makkah infrastructure programme,” she added.

Engineering consultancy Parsons Brinckerhoff won a deal last year to work on the new Makkah Public Transport Program (MPTP), which will include a new metro line and a major bus network.
