9th February 2014

A well-known mufti has been killed in a blaze in the holy city of Medina.

Yusuf Bismillah, aged 58, of Ripon Street, Blackburn, is understood to have suffocated when the hotel he was staying in in the Saudi Arabian province caught fire.

Tributes have poured in for the ‘pious’ and ‘humble’ teacher, who was associated with the Lambeth Street and Cumberland Street mosques.

Mufti Bismillah’s wife Fatimah was also taking to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhillation.

Two of their eight children have flown out to Saudi Arabia to be with her.

The blaze killed 12 people and injured at least 130 other pilgrims.

Medina is a major religious tourist destination for Muslims.

The city is the burial site of the Prophet Muhammad and is Islam's second holiest city after Mecca.

Grand Mosque library:
''No entry for women''

Library of Al-Masjid Al-Haram
14 February 2014 - 14 Rabi Al-Thani 1435

Dr. Modi Al-Zahrani
Al-Jazeera

I went to the Grand Mosque the other day. While I was searching for a place to sit, “The Library” sign caught my eye. I never knew there was one inside the Grand Mosque until I saw the sign. I was happy. I thought I should check it out. I went straight to the library, located on the second floor, only to discover that women are not allowed in there. There was a big sign on the door “No entry for women”. I was shocked.

I don’t understand why the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques would put up a sign inside the Grand Mosque banning female visitors from setting a foot in the library. I can’t wrap my head around such a ban.

And why are men, on the other hand, allowed to go in there and have access to the rich resources the library offers? It is really frustrating and disappointing that female Umrah performers, especially those coming from outside the Kingdom, cannot visit this important place. It would have been a good memory for them to take home and cherish.

The Grand Mosque is supposed to be the only place where visitors, male and female alike, should not feel they are being discriminated against. They should be treated equally. After all, Muslim men and women of all colors and races circle around the Ka’aba (the large cuboid building at the center of the Grand Mosque) together and at any time they like during the day or the night.

I also wonder why the praying areas designated for women inside the Grand Mosque are smaller than the areas for men. Most women bring in their children with them when they go there. They need a lot of space because a smaller space can be annoying to some women as the praying areas can get filled quickly. Why are women who want to pray in the second floor in order to get away from crowd denied this right while men are allowed to do so?

I can understand that such procedures are taken because the second floor gets crowded during prayers and this might bother the women. But I don’t understand why women are not allowed to enter the library although it is in an area that is not crowded.

Madinah’s history showcased in
‘Letters and Illumination’ expo

The exhibits include a painting from 1825 which depicts Madinah and the surrounding areas, such
as the dome, the five minarets, the surrounding mountains, the agricultural fields and key buildings.

14 February 2014

The history of Madinah has been illuminated in words and images at a major art exhibition that opened on Tuesday in the city.

Entitled “Letters and Illumination,” the exhibition includes displays of calligraphy and photographs dating back to the 19th century.

It is being held in Al-Aqeeq District, about 7 km from the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. It falls outside the haram zone, which allows non-Muslims to visit.

Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman opened the event and toured the various sections on Tuesday.

Ayman Hafez, director of the exhibition, told Arab News the exhibition is being held to celebrate Madinah’s selection as the capital city of Islamic Culture for 2013.

The art includes the first photographs taken in Madinah by Egyptian Sadeq Bey from 1880 and Indian photographer Mirza from 1881 as part of a chronological photographic essay up to 1920.

These photographs are from the King Abdul Aziz Foundation, the King Fahd Public Library and the archives of noted international bodies including the Royal Geographic Society and the Barakat Trust.

There are also pictures of some Western Orientalists and famous Saudi photographers and young artists.

The exhibition includes the work of various Saudi artists, including Ahmed Mater, Abdel Nasser Algarm, Arwi Naimi, Adel Qureshi, and Faisal Al-Maliki, focusing on the Prophet’s Mosque, pilgrims, antiques of the region, natural scenery, and aerial photographs of the city.

Hafez said there has been a significant number of visitors including students, artists and scientists. Prominent visitors included Princess Adela bint Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Princess Fahda bint Saud, and Princess Haifa bint Faisal.

Several participants in the exhibition are from Jordan, Egypt, Japan, China, Syria, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kuwait.

All the paintings are original, said Hafez, including a painting from 1825, which includes the names of 18 sites in the Turkish language, and depicts Madinah and the surrounding areas, such as the dome, the five minarets, the surrounding mountains, the agricultural fields and key buildings.

Some of the pictures, shown in a three-dimensional display, portray the history of the area. A statement outlining its meaning accompanies each picture.

The exhibition also pays homage to leading Arab and Saudi calligraphers including Shakir Hassan Al-Said, Ahmad Mustafa, Nassir Al-Salim and the Kuwaiti Farah Bahbahai.

The exhibition showcases a special collection of calligraphers obtained from the British museum including Farhad Mushiri from Iran, Abd Al-Qadir Rayyis from Dubai, Hassan Masoudi from Iraq, and Fuad Kouichi Honda from Japan. This effort was organized in cooperation with two leading galleries, Athr Gallery in Jeddah and Agial in Beirut.

Pictures taken by the Lebanese photographer Carla Salem stand out because she displays a mixture of Japanese and Arabic calligraphy. She produced a picture of the words qamar and shams, Arabic for moon and sun, on the trunk of a tree.

The event will include the publication of “Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah,” a book that presents images from well-known world photographers and edited by the photographer Humberto da Silveira.

The Islamic Education Science and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) selected Madinah as the Capital of Islamic Culture.

— The exhibition is open to the public until March 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Two female sultanas

and the Mecca water way

The water ways in Mecca were first built by the wife of the Abbasid caliph
Harun Rashid, later to be repaired by the daughter of Ottoman sultan Suleiman.
10 February 2014

Omer Aymali / World Bulletin / History

Throughout the era of the Ottoman Empire, various masterpieces were produced, such as mosques, precincts, hostels and drinking fountains. By institutionalizing some of these structures, they became everlasting achievements. One of the members of the Ottoman household to do this was Sultan Suleiman’s daughter Sultana (princess) Mihrimah. Sultana Mihrimah contributed greatly to charity by establishing a mosque and precinct in Istanbul's Uskudar district and in the north-western city of Edirne.

One other great service Sultana Mihrimah did was order the repair of Mecca’s Ayn ul-Zubeyda water way. Throughout history, Mecca on a number of occassions experienced great drought. This proved to be a problem especially during the season of the Hajj pilgrimage when the city’s need for water would increase.

To solve this problem, the Abbasi Caliph Harun Rashid’s wife Lady Zubeyda built a 60 km long aqueduct on the outskirts of Mecca at a place called Numan Valley. By Lady Zubayda decorating the holy area with water fountains, the Muslims' need for water during the seasons of Hajj was fulfilled.

In the time of Sultan Selim I, the Hijaz region came under Ottoman rule. This event imposed the Ottoman Sultans with a new duty. This was the duty of organizing the Hajj for the entire Muslim world. From then onwards, the sultans would take on the title of “custodian of the two holy mosques” and would work to help Muslims complete their pilgrimage in peace and safety as well as undertake comprehensive reconstruction projects in these areas.

The repair of the water ways made by Lady Zubeyda is one example of this. From the year of 1560 the Ayn ul-Zubeyda water way received great damage due to flooding and sand storms, making it unusable. After this, the Chief of Mecca sent a report to Istanbul, stating that the water ways needed repair. Following the report, Sultan Suleiman worked out what repairs were needed and appointed a committee to calculate its cost. According to the committee's calculation, the required repairs for the water ways and making new canals would cost nearly 30,000 gold coins.

The Sultan took responsibility for Mecca’s water way repairs after hearing that his daughter Mihrimah had also been the previous constructer of these water ways. He asked the Architect Mimar Sinan to repair the water ways, granting well over the required amount with a sum of 50,000 gold coins. Within the same year in 1573, under Mimar Sinan's management, the restoration began. After a period of 10 years of repair work, the water ways were finally completed in 1583.

During the repairs, the Ayn ul-Zubeyda water ways were nourished from other sources and like this the water levels were increased. Before this, the water ways would only reach Arafat within the city of Mecca, but after the extensions were made, the waterways were delivered to various other locations.

After the completion of these extensive repairs the Ayn ul-Zubeyda was opened with a ceremony of supplications. Like this, the water way which was originally built by one female sultana was repaired by another female sultana and continued to serve Muslim pilgrims for centuries afterwards.
