Former Haram imam refused entry to UK

19 December 2013

A former imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah was stopped from traveling to Britain as he boarded his plane in Riyadh bound for London on Wednesday.

Sheikh Adel Al-Kalbani had performed the noon and afternoon prayers together just before the boarding announcement at King Khaled International Airport’s departure terminal.

“I was stopped at the door of the plane and told that the authorities received a message from the British Embassy saying that I was not allowed to enter Britain,” Al-Kalbani told Arab News.

He had planned to visit the British Muslim community.

He said he received his visa before the Haj season (in October) from the British Embassy in Saudi Arabia, within two weeks of submitting his application.

The British Embassy did not explain why he was refused entry.
“I don’t really know why they denied me entry. I was in Britain about four years ago and other countries,” he said.

Alkalbani said he visited the US in the mid-1990s.

He said the British Muslim community had arranged a series of events where he could speak and meet people in various UK cities, including London.

“I was told that other Muslim scholars have also been denied entry and had their visas canceled. My gut feeling is that they don’t want to see me interacting with the Muslim community there,” he told Arab News.

When asked if he would re-apply for a UK visa or seek clarification from the British Embassy, he said: “No. Alhamdullilah, He has chosen the best for me.”

The evolving art of Arabic Calligraphy

21 December 2013

JEDDAH – Arabic calligraphy has flourished throughout history as an art form that adds value and beauty to literature. The development of sophisticated calligraphy as an art form is not unique to Islamic culture. In the Islamic world, however, calligraphy has traditionally been held in high regard. The energy and value given to the copying and writings of the Qur’an elevated Arabic calligraphy to the status of an art.

Arabic is written from right to left, like other Semitic scripts, and it consists of 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet. Short vowels are not part of the alphabet but rather small signs placed above or below the consonant or long vowel that they follow. Having these short vowel signs around the letters combined with the fact that there are no capital forms of letters, gives the Arabic script its character and beauty in calligraphy.

For writing, the Arabic calligrapher employs a reed pen (Qalam) with the working point cut on an angle. This feature produces a thick down stroke and a thin upstroke with an infinity of gradation in between.

Sultan Balubaid, a 31-year-old calligrapher from Jeddah, started practicing calligraphy since childhood after observing Arabic calligraphy on banners and signs. There are countless beautiful Arabic fonts used in calligraphy but according to Balubaid, the Kufic script is considered the oldest and was used in the initial scripts used to write the Qur’an.

“In modern times, however, the most common fonts used are the Thulth, Naskh , Riq’a, Diwani, Jili Diwani, Ta’liq (Persian script) ) and the Kufic script. There are also other scripts such as the Moroccan one which is often used mainly in Morocco. Personally, I love the Thulth, which is one of the most beautiful and most difficult Arabic fonts. I also enjoy using Nuskh, which is characterized by its agility and ease of reading as well as the font used in writing the Qur’an,” Balubaid explained.

When it comes to tools, Arabic calligraphy, just like any other forms of art, has its own tools. Designs with calligraphy were created out of many different materials. Yet calligraphy often imitates the technical effects of pen on paper. Before the invention of paper, vellum or parchment was the highest quality writing material available. Typically, a reed pen, with the tip cut at an angle and filled with ink, would have been used.

Though Balubaid uses a curare (taken from bamboo trees) and a special kind of ink handmade by calligraphers, he sometimes also uses a special kind of paper when writing plates. “Nowadays, there are different kind of pens one of which is called “Slayat” and it is used in the writing of small texts and in the writing of the Qur’an. There are also high-quality inks that are made in Germany and China,” he said.

With recent technologies and design software, Arabic calligraphy has become more apparent. “Modern technology has helped greatly in bringing out and publishing this original form of art, especially social networking sites which have contributed to publicizing exhibitions and workshops for anyone in the world interested in Arabic calligraphy,” Balubaid added.

The popularity of Arabic calligraphy has evolved over time from only being used to write the Qur’an and in architecture to being printed on t-shirts and even stationary. This trend has increased the exposure it gets and made it apparent in everyday life.

Prince Sultan: Islam brought security to Arabia

GLORIOUS PAST: SCTA President Prince Sultan bin Salman with former US Secretary of State James Baker, left,
during a tour of the Saudi heritage show that he opened in Houston on Wednesday.
20 December 2013

Prince Sultan bin Salman, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), opened a major heritage show at the Museum of Fine arts in Houston on Wednesday and highlighted the significant role played by Islam in bolstering security and stability in Arabia.

“Islam also enriched the Arab culture and civilization,” the SCTA chief said in his speech at a dinner banquet after the opening, which included several US officials, academics and former Secretary of State James Baker.

Houston is the third US city to host the popular exhibition entitled “Saudi Archeological Masterpieces Exhibition through the Ages." It showcases 250 artifacts, covering a period from the Paleolithic era (one million years BC) up to the emergence of the modern Saudi state. It will continue in Houston until March 9.

The exhibition focuses on the impact of the ancient trade routes across the Arabian Peninsula that fostered economic and cultural exchanges between peoples.

The SCTA chief also underscored the remarkable progress achieved by Saudi Arabia under the leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. “Saudi Arabia is a stable country and is making steady progress.”

Prince Sultan added: “Excavations have proved the progress achieved by the Kingdom’s historical cities such as Makkah, Madinah, Taima, Al-Ula and Najran. The historic Souk Okaz in Taif not only promoted trade but also cultural activities, he said.

Prince Sultan said Saudi Arabia wants to maintain strong relations with the United States. “King Abdul Aziz, the founder, had told then US President Franklin Roosevelt that he wanted to strengthen US relations because it upholds its unchangeable values.”

He underscored the growing Saudi-US ties. Thousands of Saudi students are pursuing their higher studies at American universities and institutes, he said.

Prince Sultan said the artifacts on display at Houston, which were excavated from more than 10 archaeological sites, forms part of an effort to learn more about the cultures that thrived in the Arabian Peninsula.

The show was previously staged at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. and the Carnegie Museum in Pennsylvania, drawing thousands of visitors, including many students, academics and archaeologists.

The Houston show is sponsored by Saudi Aramco, Exxon Mobil, Boeing, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Olayan Financing Group and Khalid Ali Al-Turki & Sons.

He said the exhibition achieved great success at its six previous stations, beginning with the Louvre Museum, the Spanish Acacia institution, the Hermitage Russian Museum and Pergamum Museum in Germany, attracting more than 2 million visitors.

Visitors at the Smithsonian described the exhibition as one of the best ever held in the Washington D.C. area, because it had important relics outlining Arabian history and culture across different ages.

Japanese visitor Kueno Francis Tanami said the exhibition was stunning because he did not realize such ancient civilizations existed in the Arabian Peninsula.

“In fact, for a long time we've been busy with Greek, Roman and Pharaonic history, but I didn’t know about this part of the world. I've seen very beautiful pieces, and they are totally new to me,” he said.

Peter Dingham and Lily Angle, who arrived specially from Virginia to see the show, said: “What we've seen at the exhibition has astonished us. We're surprised at seeing such a great Arab civilization dating back thousands of years. It is wonderful to be closely acquainted with the antiquities of this great civilization in the United States.”

Revamp of highway rest stops under way

Pilgrims on Saudi Arabia's long highways
will soon see upgraded fuel and rest stops

OVERHAUL: The government is revamping over 10,000 service stations and rest stops across the country.
21 December 2013

Motorists and pilgrims on Saudi Arabia's long highways will soon see upgraded fuel and rest stops offering hygienic toilets, clean mosques, good food and quality car repair services.

This comes as government starts its rehabilitation program in earnest of an estimated 10,000 rest stops across the country. The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) are overseeing the project.

The government announced the project earlier this year, giving rest stop owners two years to ensure that their businesses meet stringent new quality criteria. The owners also have to contract specialized oil companies and major international fast food chains to set up shop at their rest stops.

Recently the authorities shut down a well-known roadside rest stop along the Jeddah-Makkah Expressway for violating hygiene and safety standards. The Al-Ruhaili rest stop, about 25 km east of downtown Jeddah, has been operating for over 30 years.

Mohammed Baqar, an Indian expatriate, who travels nearly 5,000 km every week on the Kingdom's roads, told Arab News: “I did not find a mosque or toilet at any of the service stations on the Madinah Highway and the situation is worse on the Riyadh Highway.”

Kalu Mian, a Bangladeshi truck driver who has been working on the country's highways for the last 27 years, said: “It's better not to talk about the cleanliness of the mosques and the sanitation of toilets on the highways.”

Individuals living in remote desert villages own most of the gas stations and allied service centers, including restaurants. These gas stations are poorly managed with dirty toilets. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has lambasted the owners of these stations for the state of the mosques.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs had tried over the last four years to upgrade services at these stations. The SCTA has also failed to implement a grading system. However, the government has now allowed the United Arab Emirates' top fuel company, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), to help with its expertise. Other foreign companies have also expressed an interest in operating in Saudi Arabia, threatening the existence of the local operators.

Riad Malik, a member of the fuel stations committee at the Council of Saudi Chambers, said there are 10,000 gas stations and service centers along the country's highways that lack safe and hygienic services.

He said 90 percent of these stations are owned by individuals with no business experience and less than 10 percent are owned by business organizations such as the Saudi Automotive Services Company (SASCO).

He said the service stations in the Kingdom do not meet customer standards, 80 percent of the owners have no professional business experience and about 40 percent do not have permission to operate.

Looks like these pics are from a video from the 1st phase. Because the area of demolition of the 2nd was different. And also they done the demolition faster. They done by hands because they wanted to keep pieces and specialy the columns.

But I posted the prouf before ... here's again the pics

Why do they want to keep the ottoman porticos? What difference do they make when other buildings have been demolished?
