Madinah as the Islamic Cultural Capital of 2013

Exhibition in Madinah

_________________

Expansion of Prophet’s Mosque
through the ages put on display

Saturday 24 August 2013

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Prophet’s Mosque has organized an exhibition on the mosque’s history and expansion works as part of the ongoing celebration of Madinah as the Islamic Cultural Capital of 2013.

The items on display give an insight into the kind of expansions that the mosque underwent since its inception in the seventh century to date.
“The items showcased also include manuscript copies and photos of the messages sent by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to many kings of his time, inviting them to Islam,” Exhibition Director Abdul Hadi Al-Hujaili said in a statement quoted by the Saudi Press Agency on Friday. "His seal is also among them.”

The items include 35 photographs, replicas of the mosque, tape recordings in English and Arabic, plaques that describe the expansion and constructions ordered by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. Photos of the razing of old buildings, diggings for new constructions, foundation stone-laying ceremonies and completion of construction, expansion of its squares and construction of car parks and utilities can also be viewed, Al-Hujaili said.
The exhibition venue is at the southern side of the mosque.

Books describing various aspects and history of the mosque and the city of Madinah are also exhibited. One book on display is on the imams of the mosque over the past decade.

Videos on various stages of the expansion and construction of the mosque are being shown at a closed hall. The films include the efforts of King Abdul Aziz and his successors in the development of the mosque.

It also gives a video presentation of the ongoing 30,500-square-meter expansion ordered by King Abdullah in March and the installation of 250 huge umbrellas and cooling and water spraying systems using 436 fans in the mosque squares, he said.

When the expansion works are completed in less than two years, the mosque will have a capacity of 1.6 million worshippers.

“The exhibition will also showcase rare manuscripts and copies of the Holy Qur’an including a copy of the Amma juz, Surah Maryam, Surah Al-Fatihah, beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah, and Surah Ibrahim. It will also give details on the construction of the service buildings, control rooms and the service tunnels besides the standby power stations and air-conditioning system,” he said.

School and university students who wish to visit the exhibition should apply for that at the exhibition office, he said, adding that they can visit on weekdays from Sunday through Thursday during the forenoon.

''First Mecca Pilgrimage Exhibition''

Wednesday, 21, August, 2013

The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islāmic Art is pleased to share its 80 works at the first major exhibition in the Netherlands dedicated to the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca which is fundamental in Islam.

The collection will be displayed from September 10, 2013 to March 9, 2014 at the National Museum of Ethnology or Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden, in partnership with the British Museum in London. For hundreds of years, the Hajj has motivated leaders and artists to create outstanding items.

More than 250 objects from Indonesia and Morocco dating back from the 10th century to the recent years have been collected for this show.

Mecca is well-known in Dutch culture and history with hundreds of thousands of people living in the Netherlands and those from the former Dutch colonies of Indonesia and Suriname have made the pilgrimage long-ago.

The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islāmic Art features textile art. It is one of the few private collections to have a large number of pilgrimage-related textiles. It consists of 20,000 works and is the biggest and most complete in the world, covering the full history of Islam.

“There is an app for that”:
pilgrims to get smartphone guide to Mecca

A Dubai-based startup developed a smartphone app to guide pilgrims going for Umrah in Mecca.
Thursday, 22 August 2013

A Dubai-based startup released UmrahSalam, a smartphone travel application set to become the guide for pilgrims going for Umrah all year long.

“It seemed like an obvious need because during last year’s hajj season there was an incredible wave of social media with pictures and tweets,” Ali Dabaja, founder and CEO of Dubai-based Hajjnet, told Al Arabiya English.

“One of our traditions is that when a friend or family comes back from Hajj or Umrah we go and congratulate them, and that person will tell their story… so we just wanted to allow people to share that experience with today’s technology,” he added.

The application aims at providing pilgrims with a common platform where they can share their experience and expert advice and “let them focus on the spirituality of the experience,” said Dabaja.

UmrahSalam.

While it is quite helpful during the Umrah’s rituals and around the city of Mecca, being connected on social media may be distracting.

“The social side is obviously [optional] if you want to use it. Saving and sharing your experience is extremely important for the community,” said Dabaja.

Ali al-Hanaki, head of planning and development at the Ministry of Social Affairs in Saudi Arabia was not concerned with the exposure or distraction from smart phones or the relevant apps.

“This is a great service for pilgrims, it’s about time we put technology at the service of Islam,” he told Al Arabiya.

Features

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, all Muslims that are capable and can afford Hajj are required to travel to Mecca and perform the ritual that lasts for days during the Hajj season.

Unlike Hajj, the Umrah ritual is not a pillar of Islam. It can be carried out in conjunction with Hajj, or at any time of the year.

The app includes a number of features, such as ‘Guidance’ and ‘Progress’, which is a built it Tawaf [the act of circulating around the Ka’aba] counter, to keep track of one’s completed circulations, among other services.

UmrahSalam.

“The Progress is a key feature which allows you to see the process of Umrah and where you’re at. If I could see what I’ve done and what I’m going to do next it would give me confidence and comfort and help me focus on what I’m doing now,” Dabaja explained.

One can also create his or her own list of Dua’a (invocation or supplication) as well as compile relevant Dua’as found on the app at different key stops during the Umrah process, all through the ‘Dua’a Prompter.’

Besides the ritual-related guidance, UmrahSalam provides pre-Umrah tips on what to pack, what to wear, etc. as well as other tips including taxi fares, where to get a haircut and what’s the most comfortable footwear.

“We wanted to let people focus on the spiritual aspect, you can simply use the app for confirmation to ensure that you are doing the right thing at the right time, and at the right place,” said Dabaja.

Other applications include ‘Multimedia & Expert Advice,’ the social functionality that allows you to upload pictures onto the app and share the experience with fellow pilgrims, as well as ‘Map & Location Support’, which allows a pilgrim to pin his or her hotel as well as other key places on the map.

The ‘Guidance’ feature and its associated functionalities do not require data, Ali emphasized that the majority of the app is in the Guidance.

“The ‘Mapping’ requires data, if you open the maps and want to see where you are, you want to see where your hotel is or other key locations, that will require data. The sharing and notes that you take, in order to push those onto the social networks that will require data, but everything else runs locally on the phone,” said Dabaja.

Almost every smart phone has its data package, and users can be connected whenever and wherever, however there was a purpose behind enabling a large part of the application to run locally on the phone.

Enabling many features in the app to run locally on the phone without requiring data or an internet connection was not an easy task, Ali said.

UmrahSalam.

“That was a tremendous challenge, but we came to realize quite quickly that it was a necessity because although you have coverage everywhere, at the peak intervals there is so much demand on the network that we wouldn’t be of any use if we were dependent on data.”

Ignorance is Bliss

The irony lays in the fact that Dabaja has never personally been to Umrah, but he did take that to his advantage when he thought of app.

“I went to congratulate someone that came back from hajj and started to talk about his experience, including issues and obstacles he faced. I projected myself into that situation and what I would need, and it was clear that there was a lot that we could do with technology to support and alleviate these things,” he told Al Arabiya English.

The team started the conceptualization of the app three months prior to last year’s Hajj, a Beta version of the app was released, and there was a lot of information to be collected from testing the app and the received feedback.

“We tracked one of our team members when he was doing Hajj, when he did tawaf, we had a GPS image of exactly where he moved,” said Dabaja, speaking of the dedication of his team.

“We continue to refine it and add features. Our vision is for a lot more that what we’re doing right now,” Dabaja added.
Yet to come

The app is currently available in English, and the ‘Dua’a Prompter’ allows displays of Dua’a in Arabic, a translation in English, and a transliteration for non-Arabic speakers who would like to recite the Dua’a.

A correct pronunciation of each Dua’a is also available.

Dabaja confirmed that the team is working on introducing the Arabic app and another version of UmrahSalam for Android “as soon as possible.”

“The thing with being a startup and a small team is that our resources are pretty limited, we have to prioritize these things,” he told Al Arabiya.

Grand mufti to rights groups:

Practice what you preach

Sunday 25 August 2013

The grand mufti of the Kingdom, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Asheik, has criticized human rights organizations for not practicing what they preach.
Al-Asheik questioned the role of the organizations in the recent turmoil prevailing in the Islamic countries.

He said that adversaries supply arms and ammunition to countries afflicted with war and sectarian tension in order to further weaken Islam and unity among Muslims.

In his Friday sermon at Imam Turki bin Abdul Aziz Mosque in Riyadh, the Grand Mufti said that enemies are taking advantage of the situation and urged Muslims to join hands in fighting such forces.

In the sermon, he cited a Prophetic “hadith” in which the Prophet, peace be upon him, told a man to “support thy brethren whether they are in the right or not.” The man then asked how he could stand in support of someone who is an oppressor. The Prophet replied “by preventing him from committing further injustice.”

Imams exploiting politics

in sermons face the sack

A general view of pilgrims worshiping at the courtyard of the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Imams and preachers
have been warned against indulging in political issues and matters of creed or implicitly or explicitly defaming specific individuals or states.
Sunday 25 August 2013

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance is in the process of imposing penalties on imams and preachers who discuss political issues and matters of creed or those who implicitly or explicitly defame specific individuals or states. Such penalties may include dismissal from job if violations are repeated, say sources.

The ministry has emphasized the fact that their role is confined to preaching and providing guidance in religious spheres and that some of them have given written undertakings pledging that they would not inflame public sentiment by discussing politics during Friday sermons.

The sources said there is a committee at the ministry entrusted with following up on such violations and reporting preachers who have taken advantage of their position to influence public opinion.

The ministry statement follows an incident on Friday at Al-Ferdaous Mosque in Al-Nahda district, Riyadh, where an Egyptian worshipper protested against a preacher denouncing Abdul Fattah El-Sisi, defense minister and army chief of Egypt.

Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Abdulaziz, a former imam and preacher, said that mosques are sanctified areas of worship. He said imams should follow the instructions given to them by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The prayer against El-Sisi, according to one report, prompted the Egyptian to question the preacher, while he was giving the Friday sermon. This infuriated other worshippers who tried to push the Egyptian out of the mosque.

The ministry said it would investigate the incident on Sunday and take appropriate action against the imam. Abdul Mohsen Al-Asheikh, deputy minister for mosque affairs, said the ministry would not allow using mosques for political motives.

No room for politics in mosques.

Compensation for demolished buildings
around Haram delayed

PAYMENT DELAYS: An estimated SR30 billion to remains unpaid to owners of buildings that
had been demolished to make way for the expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
Sunday 25 August 2013

An official working on the project to develop the surrounding areas of the Grand Mosque at Makkah has said SR30 billion of the SR90 billion owed in compensation to former property owners has not been paid out.

“Since 2009, SR60 billion has been paid out in four stages. The outstanding amount has not been paid because owners haven’t completed administrative procedures,” said Abbas Qattan, a supervising engineer.

Qattan said that the committee and the notary has assigned four judges to look into these cases and maintained that they were not to blame for the delay in payment, saying that legislative deeds or paperwork for inheritors were incomplete.

Qattan said the expected demolition of 13,000 buildings south of the Grand Mosque following the Haj season will not be assigned to his administration but that the project will be assigned to Makkah Reconstruction with a preliminary budget of SR 23 billion.

Qattan said road constructions under the supervision of his administration were awarded to Bin Laden Saudi Company, which is working on completing the circular road that extends from Bab Ali to Ibrahim Al-Khalil Street. In addition, he said, there remain only 20 buildings in the Ajyad neighbourhood, which will be removed as soon as electricity stations are removed.
“Some of these property owners handed in their paperwork and demanded payment only during the third stage of the project, which was rather unusual,” he added.

“During the fourth stage, we discovered buildings in Bakir Pasha Sabeel in the Al-Masfalah province. These buildings date back to the Ottoman era. We will not compensate people for the value of the land because they don’t own it; we will only compensate them for the remains,” Qattan said.

Qattan denied that his administration was behind delaying compensation payment for more than 200 buildings in the name of Bakir Pasah Awqaf. “The matter is with the general court. It decides whether to pay compensation for real estate, whether land, buildings or remains. Bakir Pasha Awqaf is a legitimate issue and the judge issues a ruling with a percentage that ranges between 25 to 75 percent,” he added.

“The highest rate of compensation was paid for an apartment building in the Ajyad province opposite Al-Safwah Tower, at SR 600,000 per square meter, followed by a neighbouring building with a value of 550,000 per square meter. The remainder of compensation, which began in the Al-Zawawi building in Al-Bab through to the Al-Masfalah province, reached SR 450,000 per square meter,” he said.

Qattan said the lowest rate of compensation for removed property was given for a house at the top of a mountain in the Al-Hajour province. Value estimation is conducted according to a certain mechanism and takes into account many factors such as location, proximity to the Grand Mosque and whether the land is mountainous of flat.

Haramain Railway work on track

The new railway set to open in late 2014 or early 2015

Sunday 25 August 2013

Work on the Haramain Railway project that links the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah is progressing as planned, Mohammed Al-Suwaiket, president of the Saudi Railway Organization, said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting progress on work being completed in Rabigh and Jeddah, he said contractors have stepped up their efforts to complete their work on schedule by employing more workers.

“We are monitoring the works of contractors in different locations by conducting field inspections and checking on their reports,” Al-Suwaiket said.

Mohammed Abuzaid, spokesman of SRO, said Al-Suwaiket inspected Wednesday works on a railway station at King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh and its Jeddah station.

“He had a detailed discussion with the contractors and consultants and instructed them to complete the work on schedule by supplying an adequate number of workers and equipment,” Abuzaid said.

Last year, the SRO awarded the final phase of the project to a group of Spanish infrastructure, construction and technology companies. The new 450-km line is expected to carry around 160,000 people a day and even more during the Haj pilgrimage. They will be transported on a fleet of 35 new high-speed trains.

The project was launched in 2009 at an estimated cost of more than 12 billion euros.

The new railway is set to open to the public in late 2014 or early 2015.

Aside from the two holy cities, the line will have three other stops — two in Jeddah for commuters and one at King Abdullah Economic City, a newly developed residential, industrial and commercial macro-complex.

Spanish construction companies Copasa, Imathia and OHL are responsible for building the line’s superstructure and track bases, as well as for the line’s mechanisms.

The project’s second and last phase will involve the installation of tracks, signal and communication systems, the railway electrification system and import of 35 high speed trains. The second stage will also see the establishment of six power stations to meet the project’s power requirements.
