Steps to ensure no overstaying Umrah visa

3 August 2013 - 25 Ramadan 1434 H

JEDDAH – The government has taken strong measures not allowing Umrah pilgrims overstaying their visas, Haj Minister Bandar Al-Hajjar said here Friday.

His ministry, Al-Hajjar said, issued 5.2 million Umrah visas this season declaring the operational plan for the Umrah season as "successful."

The ministry, he said, is closely coordinating with all pertinent sectors and government agencies to ensure that no single Umrah pilgrim overstays his/her visa. The ministry is also working round-the-clock to provide Umrah pilgrims with all necessary services to ensure they perform their rituals comfortably.

“This season, the ministry’s guides were able to help 25,000 pilgrims who got lost and did not know how to return to their accommodations,” Al-Hajjar added.

All Umrah companies have been instructed to provide Umrah pilgrims with agreed-upon services and have been warned that severe penalties will be imposed on violators. The ministry has assigned committees to monitor the performance of these companies and refer violators to investigation. The extensive monitoring visits have reduced the number of violations this season.

Al-Hajjar reiterated the ministry’s commitment to remove all obstacles preventing the pilgrims from performing their rituals in ease and comfort.
He said the ministry reduced the number of visas for Umrah pilgrims this year due to the development projects being implemented in the Two Holy Mosques, stressing that the ministry also extended the deadline for Umrah this year up to 15th of Ramadan in order to allow more people to come to Makkah and Madinah.

Meanwhile, economists say they expect Makkah malls, especially those located near the Grand Mosque, to make SR150 million in sales. Although the central, northern, and western areas of the Grand Mosque do not have any malls, the nearby shopping areas like Al-Jafriyah and Al-Otaibiya have seen an influx of Umrah pilgrims.

Some businesses, especially those selling perfumes and clothes and textiles, have been doing brisk business since the first day of the holy month.

Community Iftars at the Prophet’s Mosque
a show of unity

Verily, this nation of yours is a single nation, says the Holy Qur’an. People from different ethnic and linguistic backgrounds
sit outside the Prophet’s Mosque to break their fast in a display of the oneness of humanity.

Friday, August 02, 2013

MADINAH – Iftar meals at the Prophet’s Mosque have a special place in the hearts of many Umrah performers and visitors coming from both inside and outside the Kingdom.

Saudi Gazette visited the mosque and saw how Umrah performers break their fast together with smiles and a general content look on their faces. Some Umrah performers said they could not describe the atmosphere of spirituality they experience in Madinah.

Most of the group meals distributed at the mosque are prepared by Madinah residents seeking to gain rewards from Allah. Residents start trickling into the mosque after Asr prayer and bring dates, juices, water, milk, yogurt, fruits and other food items. Children as young as seven can be seen helping their fathers arrange food and prepare meals for Umrah performers who expressed their admiration and appreciation to them.

Outside the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque, people can enjoy full meals, including popular meat, chicken and rice dishes as only dates, water, and bread are allowed in the mosque.

Some group meals cost as much as SR3,000 a day to prepare and distribute while the majority cost less.

Umrah performers from different races and backgrounds can be seen sitting next to each other breaking their fast together in a scene that reflects the unity of Islam during the holy month.

Peak capacity of mataf set at 500,000

Muslim pilgrims are seen around the holy Kaaba in Makkah during last year's Haj.
Sunday 4 August 2013

The Haj Ministry has been working to ensure the number of pilgrims from outside the Kingdom to match the 500,000-capacity of mataf (the circumambulation area around the Kaaba) at all times, according to Issa Rawas, undersecretary of the Ministry of Haj and Umrah Affairs.

Rawas said the number of remaining pilgrims coming from abroad does not exceed 450,000 pilgrims.

The drop in the total number of the pilgrims coming from abroad during this pilgrimage season amounted to more than 51 percent per night compared to last year. He added that these measures are to maintain the pace of the expansion projects in the Holy City.

Rawas said 5.2 million pilgrims came from abroad. The plan provides the opportunity to a large number of pilgrims to arrive, but requires that they leave within 15 days in view of the existing large-scale expansion projects.
Last season, pilgrims coming from abroad amounted to more than one million per night, while total numbers have not exceeded 450,000 pilgrims during the current season.

Ahmed Bafaqeeh, vice chairman and managing director of Mashaar Company for Tourism Development and an economics specialist of Haj and Umrah, said that the Ministry of Haj adopted a plan to control the crowds by adjusting the numbers in coordination with Umrah companies. He also said that the Ministry of Ha will implement the plan until the completion of the mataf expansion, which is aimed to raise its capacity from inside and outside the Kingdom.

Following completion of the current projects, the number of pilgrims from inside and outside the Kingdom will double in numbers, especially in Makkah.
According to Mohammed Radi, director of Operations in the Umrah sector, the expansion projects in Makkah will raise the capacity of the pilgrims in the coming years and will be better reflected in the Haj and Umrah sector.

Accordingly, Umrah companies, since the beginning of the season in coordination with the Ministry of Haj, were keen to maintain the numbers of pilgrims coming from outside the Kingdom in order to match the existing setup with the expansion of the Grand Mosque.

Haj Minister Bandar bin Mohammed Hajar has confirmed the success of the operational plan for the Umrah season of this year. He pointed out that the ministry is collaborating with other sectors of government and various institutions to eliminate the phenomenon of overstaying pilgrims after Umrah and Haj seasons.

He also noted to the role of field teams affiliated with the ministry is to help and guide 25,000 lost pilgrims and hand them over to the their Umrah companies.

Laylat Al-Qadr,

the night of a thousand months

During the last 10 days of Ramadan, mosques in general are full
to the brim with worshipers seeking God’s mercy.
Sunday, August 04, 2013

JEDDAH — Laylat Al-Qadr, the Night of Power or the Night of Destiny, is the holiest night of the year for Muslims all over the world. Though opinions vary, many concur that the night falls on the 27th of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting when the faithful abstain from food and drink and sexual intimacy from dawn to dusk.

Muslims around the world spend Laylat Al-Qadr in prayer and quiet reflection, some secluding themselves in mosques hoping to seek the unparalleled reward of a night when sins are forgiven and angels descend on earth.

Laylat Al-Qadr commemorates the night in 610 AD when the first verses the Holy Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Cave Hira situated on top of a mount in Makkah, which has since been known as the Jabal Al-Noor, the Mountain of Enlightenment.

According to traditions, the Archangel Gabriel appeared before Muhammad (pbuh), who had retreated to Cave Hira, with the exhortation, "Read! In the name of your Lord, Who created (all that exists). He created man from a clot of congealed blood. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who imparted knowledge by means of the pen.” (Qur’an 96:1-4). These were the very first verses of the Holy Book, which was revealed to the Prophet over a period spanning 23 years.

“Ramadan is the commemoration of the Holy Qur’an’s revelation, and the Laylat Al-Qadr is the climax of the celebrations,” said a Dawa activist who did not want to be named.

The Qur’an says: “We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power: And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand: There is peace until the appearance of the dawn.” (Chapter 97, Al-Qadr).

The importance of this night is also mentioned in several Hadiths (the Prophet’s sayings as related by his companions). According to one such Hadith, whoever establishes the prayers on the Night of Power out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards will have all his past sins forgiven.

Reward for worship in this night, according to the Qur'an, is equivalent to reward for worship in 1,000 months. It is a night greater than an entire lifetime.

However, the Prophet (pbuh) did not say when exactly this most auspicious night would be, but scholars are almost unanimous in their view that it falls on one of the odd-numbered nights in the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Many give emphasis to the 27th night of Ramadan being Laylat Al-Qadr, but scholars concur that the Prophet’s advice to "seek it on the odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadan" indicates the importance of anticipating it on other days as well.

Azzam Al-Shwaier, chair of educational supervision at Imam Muhammad Bin Saud University, said the night might fall anytime during the last 10 days of Ramadan. He quoted a saying by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in which he said it might be the 24th night of Ramadan.

“There is a reason why the specific time or day of this night is not known. It is because Allah wants people to pray and ask for forgiveness throughout the last 10 days of Ramadan.”

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, said the Prophet did not specify the time of the Night of Power.

Hamid Saeed, a Dawa activist, said there is nothing in the Holy Qur’an or in the Prophet’s sayings that specifies the date of the Night of Power. “Specifying a date would have led to extreme crowdedness in places of worship, especially the Grand Mosque in Makkah, as everyone would want to gain the benefits of the night,” he said, while adding that Muslims are supposed to increase good deeds on this night because it carries great reward.

During the last 10 days of Ramadan, mosques in general are full to the brim with worshipers seeking God’s mercy. Millions converge on the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah to seek blessings of this special night. Many are seen sitting with their hands raised to the skies with tears rolling down their cheeks and their hearts trembling out of devotion.

Saeed, however, discouraged people from performing Umrah on the 27th of Ramadan as it would be difficult for them to focus on the rituals because of the huge crowds. He said Allah alone knows the specific time of the Night of Power.

“It’s wrong to assume for sure that the 27th night is the Laylat Al-Qadr. How could one know for sure it’s the 27th when Allah did not specify it to His Prophet? Muslims should look at the last 10 nights of Ramadan as the Night of Power. It could be any night.”

There are also several myths associated with the Laylat Al-Qadr, which according to scholars are baseless and unfounded.

Saud Al-Fenaisan, former dean of School of Shariah at Imam Muhammad Bin Saud Islamic University, says the signs of the Night of Power some companions mentioned should not be taken for granted. Some of them said the night is characterized by the disappearance of sun rays during the morning.

Al-Fenaisan said the Laylat Al-Qadr does not have any such signs.

Khalid Al-Zoaq, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Science, said there is no scientific proof that the sun will not have rays in the morning of the Night of Power.

He added that research conducted over several decades has proved beyond doubt that sun rays have always been there and there is no one morning that has come without sun rays during Ramadan or at any other time of the year. The late Saudi scholar Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jibreen had once said that established scientific facts related to the sun and the moon “will remain unchanged until the Day of Judgment.”

Muslims all over the world will each year continue to patiently seek Laylat Al-Qadr where worship carries the weight of 1,000 months in the last 10 days of Ramadan, but trying sincerely to catch the reward of the blessed night is in fact about maintaining a spiritual connection with God that transcends the bounds of time and space.

Secrets of seclusion in final nights of Ramadan

4 August 2013 - 26 Ramadan 1434 H

It is during the last ten days and nights of Ramadan that the Night of Power waits to descend upon Muslims with all of its beauty and enchantment. It is during this majestic night that those Muslims who were lucky enough to stand in prayer are promised rewards and bounties of good deeds and the granting of whatever they ask in humble supplication to Allah.

It is to be able to catch this night’s rewards and also a part of following the Sunnah that Muslims all over the world seclude themselves in the mosque during these special days and nights.

Thinking and meditating in seclusion was not new to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, nor was it limited to only Ramadan. Even before Islam, the Prophet used to sit alone for hours at end in the cave of Hiraa and reflect upon creation and the Creator. That was also the habit of Prophets before him; Moses, Ibrahim, and others.

The Arabic word ‘I’tikaf’ that is attributed to seclusion in the mosque can have several meanings. It has a number of implications: distancing oneself from worldly distractions, or preventing oneself from certain pleasures, or voluntarily trapping and restricting oneself in a confined space. It can also mean committing yourself to something, and in this case of course it means committing yourself to worship, deep thought, and rituals practiced by our teacher and Prophet (pbuh).

The Prophet requested from his companions to set up a tent for him in the mosque where he spent the last days of Ramadan every year. However, a Muslim can choose any number of days, even one night to stay in the mosque with the intention of I’tikaf and to make the most of any time spent there, no matter how short it is.

The Prophet has said, “He who observes the ten days of I’tikaf during Ramadan will obtain the rewards of two Haj and two Umrah.”

In another Hadeeth, the Prophet said, “Whosoever for Allah’s sake did even one day of I’tikaf, Allah would keep him away from Hellfire by trenches.”

The goal of this seclusion is to obtain a clearer mind; to open up your heart and let your suppressed emotions and love for our religion flow. By leaving behind all distractions including television, mobile phone, laptop, Internet access, friends, family, shops, work, and household chores, we have the rare opportunity to dedicate ourselves solely to worship and to actually enjoy performing acts of worship, rather than doing them only as an obligation or duty.

I’tikaf is like a summer camp, only the scenery is a red carpeted mosque, lined with shelves of the Holy Quran, and illuminated by the facers of obedient believers inside its walls.

Sarya Fostok who is a mother of three and has a Master’s Degree in jurisprudence told Saudi Gazette, “Not only do Muslims during I’tikaf engage in physical acts of worship that are visible to others such as reading the Holy Quran, memorizing parts of it, studying the meanings of its verses, praying, and holding up one’s hands in supplication. An internal connection in the heart must also take place as the worshiper experiences a closeness to Allah and an increase in his/her faith and devotion.

It is as if I’tikaf brings in the light of faith and dispels the darkness of being mentally away from our faith.”

She goes on to recommend ways of maximizing even the short time that our jobs and families will allow us to spend in the mosque.

“There is no purpose of being in the mosque for I’tikaf and then wasting time excessively talking on your phone to follow the latest news going on outside the mosque. Refrain from arguing and participating in idle talk with others. Try not to leave the boundaries of the mosque unless you have an important reason.

Forgive the flaws of others and cooperate with your brothers in faith who are also in I’tikaf. Be sure to take advantage of the presence of scholars and learn from them and listen to their lectures if they offer any,” added Fostok.

A young man, Jihad Al-Ghali, remains in I’tikaf in a mosque in Jeddah during the last ten days of Ramadan every year.

“One of the best parts of being in I’tikaf is the good company. I have met scholars and Islamic education teachers who happily teach us a new hadeeth or a forgotten Sunnah. The friends that I have made in the I’tikaf help me to be a better person and we compete with one another on reading the most from the Holy Qur’an. Even if we talk, we speak only in remembrance of Allah or about ways to increase our faith. We help out in cleaning up after meals, if one brother is asleep during the call for a prayer, we wake him up so he does not miss out on the congregational prayer,” said Al-Ghali.

In no other place as in the mosques in the Kingdom or time as the last ten days of Ramadan is the I’tikaf so superbly facilitated for all Muslims. The worshiper is served and treated with such care and respect in the mosque so that the Muslim can free himself for what he came for, renewal of faith and closeness to Allah. Most mosques offer exemplary services for the worshiper such as meals for iftar and suhoor, cold beverages and a light snack after taraweeh prayers, and laundry.

As for women, most mosques allow I’tikaf for women and serve them from the time of Ishaa prayer until the end of the night or Qiyam prayers. And some scholars say that a woman may gain equal rewards of I’tikaf for men in the mosque if she secludes herself in a quiet room in her home and spends several hours in reflection and worship.

The last ten days are like a pearl necklace that has already been broken and the pearls are swiftly slipping by. Let us make the most of the remaining precious days of Ramadan.
