MAKKAH — Every Ramadan, thousands of Civil Defense officers are stationed around the Two Holy Mosques to ensure the safety of pilgrims and visitors. Every year, they set great examples of hard work and dedication to their duty, coming to the rescue of Allah’s Guests whenever and wherever required.
One will see the Civil Defense personnel in and outside the Holy Mosques clad in their uniforms and ready to respond to any emergency or help anyone. These personnel fully realize the enormity of their task and the responsibilities they have to shoulder in this month.
Okaz/Saudi Gazette met some of the officers and their superiors. One officer said he was proud to be serving Umrah performers and visitors who flocked to the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque. Despite a lack of sleep and nonstop work, he feels very happy when he helps an old man or a woman and they pray for him. It makes him forget his fatigue and encourages him to give more.
Saad Al-Harbi has worked as safety inspector for Umrah buildings for 20 years. Now he stands guard watching over visitors and Umrah performers and ensures that they perform their rituals as comfortably and safely as possible.
Salim Al-Harthy said that he and his colleagues compete every year to be selected for the task of helping and guarding Umrah performers and visitors. “I was glad when I was selected this year,” he said. Al-Harthy is responsible for visiting Umrah buildings and ensuring their safety.
Abdullah Al-Shahrani, another officer, said that he enjoys his work immensely and loves to help elderly people. He stands in awe when hears or sees hundreds of thousands of people inside the Grand Mosque all crying and seeking Allah's mercy. He said he can’t describe how happy he felt when he saw an elderly Umrah performer, whom he had just helped, raise his hands and pray for him.
Another officer, Muhammad Al-Hashim, said he and other officers exert great effort to help Umrah performers. “We don’t care about hot temperature or fatigue because we know that Allah will reward us for our actions and efforts.”

Saudi Arabia has selected Germany's TÜV Rheinland to support the operation of the Al-Mashaaer al-Mugaddassah metro (Makkah metro) during this year's Hajj season for the third consecutive year, Meed has reported. Under the contract, TÜV Rheinland will be working with the Chinese Railway Construction Corp and the municipality and rural affairs ministry to provide safety assurance, operations safety, systems assurance and operational readiness.
Launched in 2010, the 18km metro line connects the holy sites of Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah. It has a capacity to transport 72,000 passengers an hour.
